  • The Ukrainian Army's Azov Battalion is controversial due to its use of symbols associated with the Waffen-SS. In this video, we will examine the unit's history and what those symbols mean.

Ukraine passed a law in 2015 which criminalised criticsim of WWII Nazi organisations the OUN (Organisation of Ukrainian Nationals) and UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Association) awarding them status of National Hero- See 'The Nation - Feb. 19, 2019 'NeoNazis & Hard Right Are on the March Again in Ukraine' . These two organisations had colluded with German Nazis to murder 80,000 Ukrainian Jews in WWII. (See also articles from the Simon Weisenthal Centre, Jerusalem Post and Times of Israel on Ukrainian government's support of Nazi groups. )
Not only is Azov officially incorporated into Ukraine's army, C14, the Youth Wing of the Svoboda Party has official capacity to undertake patrols with Ukrainian police. C14 has attacked LGBT bars and events and committed progroms on Ukraine's Roma, a particularly bad incident being the arson and attacks on a Kiev Roma camp in 2014.
In December 2021 Zelensky awarded Right Sector member Dmytro Kotsyubaylo a national award. "By rights Dmytro Kotsyubaylo, nom de guerre Da Vinci, should be basking in glory. Last month the 26-year-old captain became the first living recipient serving in the ultra-nationalist Right Sector volunteer battalion to be awarded the title Hero of Ukraine by the country’s president." Times of London - 15 Jan. 2022.
Not only this, Zelensky appointed the far-right Serhiy Sternenko as head of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) in Odessa. Sternenko had overseen the appalling massacre of civilians at the Odessa Trade Union building in 2014. He was head of NeoNazi Right Sector at the time.
The Donbass citizens formed militias following Azov's violent entry into Mariupol in 2014, shooting protesters, killing several. (See James Mates contemperaneous ITV footage). The Kiev government had downgraded the use of the Russian language at education facilities and closed Russian language television stations. Russian could not be used by those working with the public, if it was used the business owner was subject to fines. Many towns in the Donbass region have populations which speak only Russian. Alarmed at this and the very significant presence of NeoNazi groups Azov, Right Sector, Pravy Sector, Svoboda Party, C14 & more on the Maidan (often violently attacking Ukrainian Birkut police) Donbass citizens protested. Their fear of the NeoNazis stems from the fact that Donbass hosts a large ethnic Russian or Russian speaking population who, under the doctrine of these Nazi groups are deemed 'Untermenschen'. Please see Deutsche Welde, Euro News & other videos of NeoNazi violence on Maidan.
In June 2014 after protests in Donbass, Kiev began its 8 year bombing campaign in which 1000s of civilians have been killed. Reporting from Donbass for the last 8 years have been Graham Philips, Anne-Laure Bonnel, George Eliason, Christelle Neant and more - all assiduously ignored by mainstream media.
I contend that your piece attempts to apologise and even whitewash the presence and appalling crimes of the myriad of NeoNazi groups openly and blazeningly brandishing their symbols, their doctrine and worst of all their behaviour in Ukraine. Ukrainians who do not subscribe to their ideology will suffer should it not be exposed for what it is.

On the other, he could have called out Nazis for being Nazis, at the risk of being accused of a Putin supporter. Instead, he did the brave thing that historians ought to do. Like many Nazi symbols, 'die Wolfsangel' has more than meaning. The actual heraldic device, also known as 'crampon', lacks the vertical bar. When the bar is added it is no longer 'die Wolfsangel' but a combination of runes H and I, a runic stave of the first two letters of the name 'HI tler'. It was used as the crest of the division SS 'Das Reich' which committed many atrocities, including the burning alive of over 600 inhabitants of the village Oradour-sur-Glane. This is the tradition dear to heart of the batallion 'Azov'. Not to forget that over 54 000 Ukrainian men volunteered to the SS in 1943.

Here someone wrote in the comments that Kolomoisky sponsors Azov.
Kolomoisky is a Ukrainian semi-criminal oligarch. This information does not contradict the information that he can sponsor the Azov. A few years ago, he had personal power ambitions in Ukraine. But Victoria Nuland flew and talked to him. After that, he went into the shadows. And it is also possible that after that he became more active in sponsoring the Azov. After all, such radical formations are always used by US foreign policy to implement coups in third countries and suppress dissenters. Such a coup was in Ukraine in 2014. After that, the influence of radical nationalist groups increased in the life of this country. And this is the main reason why Crimea, Donbass and Sevastopol hastened to separate from Ukraine. Russia and the former republics of the USSR were very sympathetic to Donbass, because they also hate neo-Nazis. And also because since 2014, Donbass has been shelled by Ukraine. These are rockets, shells, mines and rockets with cluster warheads which scattered antipersonal mines (previous year over Donetsk - main city of Donbas territory). MSM is silent about this.
In a begining (2014) it was even air dropped bombs. But Donbas people installed anti-air defense system (I think, with help of Russia).
In answer, a Ukrainian air traffic controller brought a Malaysian Airlines passenger Boeing to the scene of this air defense. It was a mean and cruel revenge.

Only a Russian Zombie would call this a “coup”. There is no point in your translation of BS stories from Russian Zombie TV. Russian terrorists led by FSB agent Girkin invaded Ukraine and opened fire on 04.12.2014 to imitate a “civil war” in Donbass. Then Azov was created in May, as a response to Russian invasion in Crimea and Donbass. 00:34 The _wolfsangel_ ("wolf angler" or "wolf fisher") is a German heraldic device composed of three elements. It represents a wolf trap consisting of a barbed or sharp-bladed "z-shaped" piece of steel ( _Wolfshaken_ , or "Wolf's Hook") that was embedded in a lump of meat and hooked to an iron or steel chain ( _kette_ ). It was suspended from nearby tree limbs by a cresent- or fan-shaped blade ( _Wolfsanker_ , "Wolf's Anchor") with an eyelet in its base to secure the chain. A wolf would leap up and swallow the lump of meat and get it stuck in its gullet. The barbs or blades would keep the steel bit stuck in its throat until it died. The three elements of the _wolfsangel_ (hook, chain and anchor) are used as heraldic charges, but there are no examples of the complete item as a charge.
The IRL Frankenstein family had a _wolfsanker_ as its coat of arms.
The SA and SS unit insignia was a vertical or horizontal _wolfshaken_ . It was a popular symbol for foresters or _Jaeger_ units.

Just to add... the swastika is a near universal symbol in use for millennia before the short-lived Nazi regime. It is among the Vinca symbols, one of the earliest forms of writing, dating to 7,000 BCE. It can be found worldwide: on Buddhist temples in China, Hindu temples in India, Navajo pottery predating European contact, in medieval weight standards of the Ashanti in Africa, and even still adorns Greco-Roman temples all around the Mediterranean. In Poland and Ukraine, it was a common heraldic symbol for noble families. So it should not be surprising that they're comfortable with using it. People ought remember that Ukraine was devastated by the Nazis, so the idea that Ukrainians would embrace the symbol for its Nazi ties is odd to say the least.
The Black Sun is far more esoteric, and many people incorrectly credit Heinrich Himmler with its creation. However, the Black Sun is an essential part of ancient alchemical teachings about the material body in death as part of the transition of humans to the afterlife. There are many designs representing the Black Sun, but Himmler chose one based on Zierschrieben jewelry commonly found in ancient Alemannian graves. It's unlikely that Himmler even understood its meaning, since it was typically only found in the graves of women.
Frankly, we're all being a little childish about imbuing mere symbols with the power of fear such that we abandon all critical thought upon merely seeing one.

In this, they show incredible results, because you guys know about Azov and Ukraine as a whole, many things through the prism of Russian propaganda, unfortunately.
