      The ways things are these days is thta you are able to do a lot of defense with MANY calibers. There is no limit of choices. (many men have been killed with a $25 .32 Iver Johnson)(they used t be $25 at the hardware store).. many men did grocery shopping with a .22 over/.410 under..(and a Shakespeare bass rod) walking along a RR track. today we have variety of choices and they'll do the job. STILL the WHO-TEE-TOO videos are the best! Well, Hickok too (he's in Tennessee also) and paul harrell ,, they are the best for explanation and objectivity

      @@howardtrix3145 not that I'd put much stock in the fbi anymore but I'm pretty sure .22 kills more. I could be wrong & I don't have time to check it this morning but that 1st number seems dependant on the laws of the area & usage.
      As for what they finally picked... yes they picked 9mm in the end because of modern powders & the low recoil which most got better scores on. That doesn't make it the best "all around" as much as the best for a variety of people as a standard. Obviously 10mm is better if you're of a larger frame with more dexterity. .40 & 9mm seem close but still depends on the user's size & strength of dexterity. Just different ballistic purposes. For most women, my mum, & elder men I know I always will suggest 380 or 9mm. It's a balance of purpose & strength/ dexterity of the user. I can handle 10mm, for my mum I recommend 380. Anyone between I suggest 9mm, which reflects the fbi using 9mm. That would give the best average score for an average size & strength of dexterity.

    • @vashmatrix5769
      @vashmatrix5769 Před 3 lety +2

      @@howardtrix3145 I shouldn't forget to mention 45... even with a bigger hole I'd rather have more capacity with 10mm & more penetration. It also has its place for a bigger hole but moving slower. Since the recoil is close to 10mm I'd prefer more rounds & penetration with 10mm than the bigger hole and hit from a 45. It's all relative & since we don't have to all get one gun I suggest everyone try them all & choose what works best for their size & dexterity.

    I will give the nod to the 10 mm as the more powerful cartridge however the one difference with the two rounds I see is the .45 auto is firing the heaviest bullet in its weight range and is subsonic. The 10 mm has one of the lightest bullets I've ever seen in factory rounds. I will say because of '20/'21shortages that probably only gave you limited options. If the .45 had 185 grain XTPs and the 10 mm had 180 or 200 grain XTPs I would see that as a close match & want to see what they do to the clay!

I also am better set up with .45 acp much better. I seriously doubt that an animal that would handily be killed with a ten mm would survive and kill you if shot with a .45. @@bobgordon1754 Yes!! This is the kind of thinking that makes sense. ALL calibers have certain specific characteristics BUT anything 38 +P or above is formidable. MOST milk bottle type rifle calibers are formidable. (In terms of repelling attacks whether animal or human) a shooter generally fires a whole magazine .. not one-shot then take a look. A magazine might have 5 or even 10 rounds .. 6 rounds of 38 +P and that ends if .. except for maybe Cape Buffalo and most of us have something bigger than that. 357, 45, 44, 30-06 ..they all work .. 223 does the job Maybe more important (these days) is the availability of the round .. or the reload components .. and the level of skill needed to reload and support the caliber ... I agree that 45 ACP, 45 Colt and 357 are very good choices to rely upon. Powders, primers, cast lead, bullet shape, bullet weight, brass, .. dies, powder measures, scales, shelf space, reloading press, all part of supporting a specific gun or set of guns.

More like a push. I carry the .45. Bottom line is both will do the job but which can you shoot better? Of course the 10 can take down big game... but that's another argument..

  • @TietLung
    @TietLung Před 2 lety +6

    I shoot both a lot and love to reload both. 230 grain hp in a standard 45acp pressure is hap hazzard as far as its expansion reliability. Drop the weight of the 45 to 185 and youll get far better expansion reliability, and in the 1000 to 1100 fps in terms of speed(without having to go +p). Or if youre really wanting to jump up the 45s fps, they make the 45 bullets in 165 grain jhp and that will really increase the speed (about 1200fps). Yeah, youll be pretty close to these 10mm at that point and still with a slightly heavier projectile. So for the 45acp guys out there.....just reload. Its not an anemic round at all. Its just a big ass chunk and going to go slower unless you drop the weight of the projectile so you can increase speed safely. Just look at what a 230 grain 10mm travels at. Still faster than these 45s in the video, but not near 500fps faster. More like 100 to 150 in my tests.

    EDC should be the one that is comfortable enough to wear EVERYWHERE, able to access rapidly, able to hit MULTIPLE targets MULTIPLE times in the shortest time. Hits with a 22lr are more likely to stop an assault than misses from the 500 S&W. One should carry enough to put 3 HITS on 3 moving targets. Few handguns will make one shot stops with toro hits. When one observes how a deer or pig runs after being shot in a non-CNS area, the time it takes it to expire can be transferred to the time an attacker can still be doing mayhem to YOU. The 500 with its 5 shot capacity really makes it tough to fulfill that test, whereas the autos that hold 7+ give a bit more "wiggle room" with faster reloads. Using a lighter bullet in either the 45ACP or 10mm will reduce recoil which allows faster followup shots. Man may have been created from clay, but is not clay anymore.

A light fast bullet is always going to dump energy rapidly and make a dramatic impact. I suspect if you needed penetration the 45 would do better, however a light bullet in the 45 would be pretty dramatic on the clay. Both damn good rounds, 10mm does it for me for the sheer amount of damage it can deal combined with its higher capacity. Also it's generally cheaper, from what I've seen. However, the .45ACP is already a powerful-ass cartridge and boasts a heavier bullet, and as such you shouldn't have to worry about overpenetration with it. On top of that, it's much more controllable thanks to its lighter recoil.
    As far as bang for your buck (NPI) is concerned, the 10mm wins for its sheer amount of power and capacity, but that also comes with higher recoil. For more human-populated areas, the .45ACP I think is just in the sweet-spot of being good enough and wouldn't be overkill (possibly literally).

    I carry my Glock 20 concealed every day in Phoenix. I love my 10mm, I feel very comfortable with 16 rounds and a couple extra mags of 10mm on me, it’s also good for taking camping and can be used for hunting! Very versatile gun/cartridge.

      Trust me, the animal or bad guy will never know the difference. The .45 has had a stellar reputation for more than a hundred years. If it was as bad as some say it wouldn't have been in service past WW I. Many companies are still turning them out and both special ops and swat teams still use them.

    I love both calibers personally. I used to carry a Glock Gen3 in 45acp. Loved that gun but when ammo prices shot up a few years ago I had to sell it and get a 9mm Springfield Armory XDS. Because I simply couldn't afford to train with the 45acp and I'm a firm believer that you have to train with your carry guns and any other guns you own. As most people know shooting is a perishable skill and if you're not training you are just putting yourself and others at risk if you can't hit what you're aiming at.

    Great vid, but, this compared a "heavy for caliber" .45 round against a "light for caliber" 10 mm round. I think the .45 would have picked up a bit more energy in a 185 grain loading and closed the gap a little. That being said, 10mm is superior for sure either way anyhow, and I need one in my life lol

    Sorry that I missed the premier. I just bought a 10 mm not long ago for the power of the round and the double stack capability. I still love the 45 acp, but having 8 rounds verse 14 is a big difference. I got it mainly for carrying around in the boar hog infested wood that I hunt.

      You know, now that I think of it I got a Taurus in 45 acp and I think it is a double stack. It's one that I got from my step-father because he has Alzheimer's and needed to offload a lot of his guns. I gave my mother about $3k to help cover the cost of several guns and this is one of the guns that I got. I haven't even fired it.
