Awesome video. I heard my name too 😂. Performance was pretty close. Fun fact for you, the 2500 Duramax does not pull out in 1st gear unless you use tow/haul mode or manually select 1st gear. The 3500s all do pull out in 1st however and they actually have a physically bigger rear end than the 2500s (diesels only).
So if you ever feel a 2500 Duramax is a little sluggish from a dead stop that is why! They are pulling out in 2nd gear instead of 1st.
You sure did lol! I figured to give you props for that statement you made about them putting the half ton 10 speed behind the 6.6 gas. Shoot, I didn’t know that, maybe I will do a short comparing acceleration! Thanks bro 👍🏾
@@JB_WhoWork The last two numbers of the transmission is GMs code for their torque rating. So when they end in 90 they are rated for a good amount of torque. Used to 80 was the biggest rating. Regardless the half ton transmissions are 8L90 and 10L90. Both are rated for around 650 foot pounds of torque (the Allison is a 10L1000 I think) I think the HD 6L90 is actually a physically bigger and heavier duty made transmission though so that’s probably why they stick with it. I say put the 10L90 in them and let it eat. It’s got plenty enough torque rating and the HDs have far superior cooling than the 1/2 tons. I think it’d be fine.
When I still had my 2020 Duramax I manually selected 1st gear and pulled out and there’s a HUGE difference in throttle response. I think even manually selecting 1st they limit the power with torque management. But in 2nd gear you get all the power. 3500s have no torque management they say. I’ve never driven one to see the difference though.
Good stuff, thanks for sharing bro 🔥
Great comparison. Surprised somebody hasn't done this before. These trucks are shockingly fast. I'd like a light-weight gas double cab standard bed 4x4 for a woods truck (if they'd become available). I'm concerned though about a really rough ride on logging roads.
On that sticker showing "tire and loading information" are the Cold Tire Pressure numbers aligned with the TPS warning light system? Or would they be lower?
The 3500 srw also starts in 2nd gear as well unless in manual mode or tow/haul.
It’s a beautiful truck. I just bought the 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500HD LTZ Duramax, and I took it on the highway yesterday and had to bob and weave in traffic in town as well, and it just got up and WENT. Did exactly what I asked it to do. I am so in love.
Watching your videos helped me decide to go ahead with a gasser this time around I have had 3 Duramax trucks and have loved them. The last one was a 2018. Great truck! But I have downsized from a 15k fifth wheel to a 8k fifth wheel and felt the gas would be ok considering the price difference. Sure I miss the diesel power at cruise and in the mountains, but I'm loving the gas vs diesel price now. I think for the weight I'm towing and the overall cost even over 5-7 years, the gas made more sense.
good review! Besides the Duramax I have an old 6.5 GMC suburban that still delivers 20+ mpg. I would note that the real difference in fuel economy shows up when towing heavy loads...in my experience, the Diesel mpg is very stable...but the gas versions I've driven really deliver abysmal mpg when towing... of course, I'm biased...love diesels! lol
Nice video. Sure wish they'd put that 10speed in the gasser. 16/17 isn't bad at all though. 2-3mpg difference for $11k price difference seems reasonable. Plus no emissions problems, lower cost of ownership, etc. Sure the D-max would be far more fun and if you are towing a lot then you have to decide what's best for you. But I think for the weekend tower the gas is the "smarter" buy. However, it doesn't pull at the heart strings like the 'ol oil burners do.....
33k in on my ‘21 6.6 gas and I can’t complain. 4 door 8’ bed full size truck and it still 💩 and gets. It’s a boat but it drives smooth and has plenty of power, even pulling trailers. Gas or diesel I like the new design. The oil drain plug is right beside the filter, that’s a plus if you change your own oil. Good review boss 🤘🏻
Thanks for sharing 👍🏾
I had a 2018 Silverado with a 6.0 gas engine. To get fuel with my 42' fifth wheel, I had to disconnect to get to gas pumps, even at truck stops. Not because of height, but because of length and ability to maneuver. The 6.0 got 6.5 - 8 mpg pulling and it averaged 16 without the camper. I also had an issue with the torque converter. It wasn't bad enough to throw codes so GM wasn't concerned about it. I traded on this 2019 Duramax (used with 2000 miles). It's the best move that I've ever made. This truck gets around 10 - 12 mpg pulling the fifth wheel (depending on hills and speed). I can fill up at the pumps with the big rigs. I've put 20,000 miles on the truck and have had no problems. The DEF system hasn't been an issue, but I only use Blue DEF. I haven't noticed the issue with the independent front suspension while pulling or loaded. However, my fifth wheel drops the bed down and get's pretty close to the bump stop, so I added a Timbren suspension Enhancement System to replace the bump stop.
did the tembren ses make a noticeable difference for your duramax? i have a 22 and was looking at the kit also
I’d take either one, gas or diesel. My 2008 has over 200K and my 2009 has over 300K and run great. It’s how you take care of your vehicles that matter.
Good review and excellent comparison JB! Amazing the MPG on these new diesels!
Thanks, it’s about time you get another HD 😅
We recently sold our 2019 Duramax due to the high cost of diesel fuel.
During our 2 1/2 years of ownership we probably averaged 18 mpg while not towing. One thing that REALLY cut the fuel economy was when it went into regen mode. It would drop down to 14 mpg instantly.
It looks to me that the Duramax got maybe 15% better fuel mileage. The cost per mile would be less with the gas because diesel is now about 25% more expensive than regular gas. There is also a cost (slight) to purchasing the DEF fluid. Oil and filter changes are also much more expensive on the diesels.
Thanks for the video! We're currently shopping for our next truck. It just won't be a diesel.
Excellent video, thanks much.
Never thought I'd ever have BOTH diesel and a gas for my company. I'll make a review here in Alaska soon.
Keep it up sir! Back to back comparison 🔥
Awesome review thanks JB!!
I like the unbiased review. You tried to match both trucks in a real world environment in driving. If you work for a dealership i hope they realize your value, because i have visited 2 dealerships in the last week and I could'nt talk to anyone who knew anything about trucks which is sad. I hope their is more valuable content in the future to help choose between models and power trains.
Thank You 👍🏾
I bought a Silverado 1500 Trailboss LT with the 6.2L this summer. No interest in either of these trucks. But I love how you do your videos. Just a normal dude comparing trucks. No slick salesman crap. Not full of crap. Just a guy talking about trucks and comparing with competition in an honest normal conversation style.
You bought a car with a bed. You know like the ridgeline🤣
@@robertdillahayii4763 I dunno. I just hauled two steers in a horse trailer about 60 miles to the butcher on Wednesday with that truck. Don't think a Ridgeline could have handled that load. LoL
How about a 20,000 mile comparison? Including mpg (with price per gallon), D.E.F and oil changes. Then you can truly see what cost of ownership operation costs. Sure you get more power out of the duramax but that only matters for towing, racing or hotrodding. Oh yeah don’t forget to factor in the $10,000 sticker difference. So if you don’t tow often, then you are better off with a gas truck. Math doesn’t lie.
That 6 sit long bed truck is just fantastic from every single angle
Great work! My 2019 crewcab longbed duramax has 28k and overall mpg is 15.1 Im in New Hampshire various roads. In a 55 mph zone i do adverage 26 mpg.
Great job on the comparison. I live in CA and they are trying to do anything to get rid of diesel. Need to move before I replaced my 13' Rm 2500 Cummins.
Over time their bullshit has spilled over into the rest of the country on diesel emissions as well as gasoline emissions. The fact that manufacturers won't develop a hybrid diesel and want to just go straight to electric proves to me that they want to cancel diesels. A hybrid diesel would be an awesome truck. A fully electric truck with the same range will weigh as much as a single axle semi and probably cost the same too.
Good Review. You are a great speaker and you anticipated all the questions I had. Thanks.
Great informative video! Nicely Done ✅
I really like your side by side comparisons. I have been wanting to get a duramax since 2008 but I refuse to pay what they want for them. I purchased a 95 silverado with the 6.5l diesel and updated the rest of the truck and have a total of 10k invested. Yeah it's not a duramax but I still have 50k left to play with. Maybe I can go buy a can of "new car smell"! Ha!
Thanks Raymond 👍🏾
I found a older garage kept Duramax LB7 2001 Chevy excab 2500HD 4x4 with only 90,800 miles for $14,000. Before I bought it I was actually looking for a Chevy 1500 excab 4x4 5.3 gas truck for the fuel mileage it could get. I have a 1999 6.0 gas and a 2004 8.1 gas both are heavy gas drinkers. My LB7 Duramax gets 22+ mpg highway and 15-16 mpg city which is good for a 2500HD with a tow tuner and K & N cold air breather. Maybe someday you can find a older good Duramax that’s affordable like I did, I will never spend the big bucks for a newer truck the prices has gone through the roof.
Informative vid. Helps when looking at new trucks. Next time you show gauges at start, leave camera for another second to show idle, normal running state. Thanks.
Most ppl dont know this but when you hit tow/ haul mode the Allison's 10spd is 4.54:1 in 1st gear that's why gm only gave it 3.42 rear gears if it's out of tow / haul you actually start in 2nd gear 2.85:1 ratio just saying big difference in acceleration
Bro thank your for this vid!
Please DO a similar comparison of a 2022 6.7 Ford diesel truck vs 2022 7.3 Ford gas v8 with 4:30 gears
I’ve been looking into the 6.6 gas and I’m glad a watched this video first. I own a lbz and wanted another duramax but man truck prices are CRAZY. U can buy a super car with low mileage for the same price as a new truck
Well, if you don’t need a truck, don’t buy one! We who need the beasts are being screwed by those who don’t-but who buy them anyway!
Great video. I appreciate the content
Just swap out today ford 250 to our new lease truck Chevy Crew cab 2500HD 6.6L gas! And almost put diesel in it went to "gas" up. Had to look under hood to make sure when I didn't see duramax on side. The filler space did had a DEF cut out. But a very nice truck for a work truck with leather and alot of functions. I work for railroad so its equip with hi rail system, rack and lights.
Congrats bro! Yea when I got my first diesel truck, I almost put gas in it lol!
Great video brother. Information is always on point
Thanks, really appreciate the comment 👍🏾
My 2022 custom 2500.gas.built Sept 21.recieved it 3/31.came with 20 in tires.
I've got a 6.6 gas and it only gets about 14. It has unbelievable power for a gas, and not sorry I skipped the diesel. As far as the trans, I don't think 6 gears is so bad. It's way better than the 2 speed powerslide of old.
I've got 1500 miles on my 22 Denali 6.6L and I'm averaging just under 13. I wasn't expecting much... I had a 2020 6.2 1500 Denali prior to this and its average was in the mid 14's.... most of it has to do with driving style, I know. I do miss the acceleration and agility of the 6.2 in the old truck but for what this is, its great. And it doesnt want premium fuel like the 6.2 did and of course its no diesel so none of that extra cost stuff and higher maintenance. Seems like a no brainer unless you are towing every day of your life
good comparison on the two trucks. I don't think you have to try to make up the $10,000 through fuel economy or whatever.
that $10,000 engine in the Duramax is going to make that truck worth probably $15,000 more than the gas when it comes time to sell it in 5 years.
it's like buying a stripper model Truck versus the Silverado Mac Daddy truck. the loaded truck brings more money when you sell it and they're a lot more people that want that truck.
So you're saying the truck that costs considerably more than the base model truck will bring more money when you go to resell it? Of course it will in most scenarios, but that doesn't mean you will have more money in your pocket when you sell it. $45k base model truck vs $80k top trim truck will not have a $40k difference when you resell them. Don't forget to add on the interest for the loan over 5 years as well.
I've seen a couple of your reviews on the 6.6 gas and every one of them you've mentioned the need for a 10 speed. I've got a 21 3500 6.6 gas and I love it. Chevy just released there 2024 redesigned HD's and said the gasser is getting the 10 speed allison
I thought I'd stop watching these when My truck was finally delivered, but nope. I can't find any videos her though, that talk about and show the actual mechanics of the Duramax engine. I'd like to know what I paid 10,000 dollars extra for. I will be carrying heavy loads in the future, but my daily use will just be transportation. I wanted to not wish I had a truck that could pull or haul just about anythig I might need to pull or haul though. I have a had 5 pickups in my life, but this is the first "truck" I have ever owned, it seems. I am loving it. 2022 GMC 3500 Denali DRW Crew in Forest Metalic, with the Duramax and 10 speed Allison.
Paid 26k for my 07 duramax lbz with 100k on it few years ago. Gets 20mph going down the highway nothing has broke in 50k miles, no def. Not much difference in the new ones. Absolutely love my truck. I avoid driving it in winters so I can get full millage out of it before it turns to a rust bucket. Still rust free and I'm in Minnesota!
Thanks for showing us this because I'm about ready to buy
👍🏾
This is what I know about these issues.
I have a ‘12 duramax, my son has ‘20 Ford 1/2 ton. Recently, we took a fishing trip two hours away with mixed city and interstate driving. I towed my fifth wheel, approximately 12,000 lbs and he towed the boat, under 7000lbs. My mpg was half of his.
The issue I have with my Denali have been away from the diesel end of it. Suspension parts not lasting on our crap roads. The interior is also crap. Cracked dashboard, that apparently an issue with gm. Premium grade my ass, the fix is put some aftermarket cover over the crap of a dash. Now passenger power seat will not move back from recline position. Motor is broken. Finding one of those has been a chore in itself.
I wish GM would bring back the 8.1L gas with the allison. Best truck I've ever owned. I would love that set up in the 2020 body style.
My dad had one for hauling horses, never bragged about the gas mileage
I put one in my squarebody and cannot keep my tires from spinning. dummy part on my end caught it on fire..just a bit so more work to get her running again...
I have a 2004 3500 8.1 .I will never sell it.
I traded in a 2011 Dmax crew cab for 2021 crew cab, both 2500 HD's. The new one is the 6.6 gas and I'm extremely happy with it. I 77 from Canton Ohio to North Carolina and it does fine with half of the torque of the diesel. My combination is just under 17,000 gross and came up Fancy Gap at 65 without having my foot on the floor. The diesel emissions are the killer, I was stuck 650 miles from home with the DEF light and at 44,000 miles, just last April the $4,000.00 turbo replacement because I didn't drive it enough. I spent the extra $10 k on a High County with all the goodies to make it a great towing vehicle.
What is the max towing capacity on the new2500hd? I keep hearing 18500
Hey thanks for the info. Definitely makes me feel better having my name on an at4 gasser, hopefully ready next month..
18500 diesel, 14500 gas at the bumper, 16650 (there about) for gooseneck/5th wheel.
Good ol canton
I'm thinking about the 2022 gas silverado 2500 HD.liked video
Ordered Duramax AT4 2500. Great video
That’s awesome, thanks!
Good video. Just sold my 2021 Chevy custom duramax n decided to buy a 2022 2500 hd 6.6 gas. I haven’t got over 12 mpg yet. Maybe it’s bc I’m from Illinois and I’m warming it up anytime I go anywhere but if it’s that bad now I’m afraid to lift it at all
nice video. to bad u couldn't tow 10,000 lbs behind you when you shot this. have two duramax now love them for towing.
That Duramax was flying! No joke right there. It’s definitely going to be a tough call deciding between the diesel and the gas when I get mine here shortly. These new DEF systems are a huge turn off for me though. To me, it’s just more stuff to break. Also with the gasoline, everything I have would use the same fuel ⛽️... truck, generator, ATV, motorcycle, and power washer. Just seems easier that way. And a savings of $10k.. the gas is calling my name hehe 😉.
Yup! Those shifts were crisp too!
I just traded my 2020 gasser in on the duramax, tow in the mountains and the gas’s 6.6 will take you to visit a lot of fuel stations $$$ that being said unloaded the economy is excellent for the size of truck. That being said I tow in the mountains so a 2022 duramax is in my driveway now!
My thought exactly. I want to get the 2500 but I'm just not a fan of diesel in general and even with getting a camper I won't be towing enough to really warrant the price and use of a diesel. If I cam with my family 3 to 4 times a year that's not enough for me to go with the diesel
After watching this again a couple weeks later, I feel the diesel calling me lol 😂. I’m selling my house and going to RV full time. I don’t know how much I will drive around exactly, but I think it’s going to exceed the gas engine. I just keep seeing more positive reviews on the Duramax. I think I’ll have to pry my wallet open. Buy once, cry once...
@@alanj7306 any updates on your purchase? I've also sold the house and going RV full time. Trying to figure out between gas or diesel. Currently have a 1500 silverado that I will be upgrading
Great Video!
900lbs vs 1000lbs who is gonna notice.....already more than enough....way it performs, shifts, smoothness and reliability and how well tranny works with the engine....
All the 2500/3500 HD truck diesels are monsters now a days.....
great test video. Im thinking the '24 model 6.6 gas with the 10 speed will be comparable witht e duramax...I'm waiting for the 24 to come out before I buy. Any insider info out there?
On my 2006, it doesn't say anything anywhere about power folding mirrors, but if you put the mirror selector in the center and press right on the mirror control, they fold in automatically. Maybe it's a hidden feature?
Great videos,Im just glad im not the one buying them, getting hammered on with less than 16miles
If you buy anything off of any dealer lot with more than 15 miles, I can assure that a customer did a hard acceleration 🤷♂️
This video states one simple fact...The 6.6 gas engine is getting performance numbers suitable to keep anyone with any common sense from buying the Duramax...with the exception of towing large trailers, then my entire statement falls apart. But for the other 95% of the time when your truck is empty, the gas engine makes so much more sense, it will take a long time to pay the 10K difference in pricing when the MPG difference is only 2.9, even at today's gas prices. I just got my new 22 2500HD Z71 gas truck and although I can tell the power increase is there from my 2011 and my 2018...the truck also seems to like fuel alot more so than the old ones, but it does ride better and is an overall larger vehicle than my last two, it's every bit as big and tall as it's Ford brothers. Good truck, I think I will keep it...:)
Looking at these trucks for full time 5th wheel towing. Never owned a diesel but the 10 speed and power of the duramax is making me think maybe diesel is the way to go. Gonna be going cross country towing a 16800lb trailer.
My Cummins got about 10 % better millage after 5000 miles and then another 10% after 20000 miles. Never owned a gas truck, but my gas cars never get that kind of boost
Great comparison. Maybe we can ask GM to put the 10 speed trans in the 6.6l gas w/ 4:10s.
That would put it right up there with the Ford... I could only imagine how good it would be with more gears and lower gearing 💪🏾
The 6 speed is better, long lasting, smooth, proven, simple, easier to fix, cheaper to fix.
@@JB_WhoWork I don’t think you have taken into account is most people or company’s that buy the gas version of HD trucks aren’t towing to max capacity but rather towing what a half tons max would be but better and longer lasting and more reliable. Over 80 percent of truck buyers only tow once a year getting any more towing capacity or more power from where it’s at is killing the purpose of it being cheaper, easier to fix, simple, and just more reliable it’s just a matter of fact that a 6 speed in general is going to outlast anything that’s got more gears just because it’s more complicated and more to break. The company’s that buy these are usually contractors, construction workers and utility companies in most cases never tow above 10k and rarely do. I think people are thinking everything bigger and more is always better when it’s not always the case.
@Hunter Halsey good point 👍🏾
Thanks for your info bro!
My 2010 ram 1500 engine went down last year, got it replaced. This year in Feb in went down again almost on the anniversary of the original...lol Im a landscaper so now i'm ready for a reliable truck without worries of fixes for awhile. Family and friends have been recommending Chevys HD and seeing your comparison of the two fuel types has helped a lot in my research.
Thanks again and keep up the videos please!
btw Think i'm going with a diesel 🤙
Sorry to hear that, thanks!
Which truck did you end up with? How are you liking/not liking it?
Dude great video
Thank you 👍🏾
Thanks really appreciate your video…
I got 18 mpg on the highway with my 3500 6.6 gas running 75- 80 mph. I was shocked it got that good of milage.
I have a 2021 gmc Denali crew cab stand bed srw. Curb weight 8427 lbs. and a 250 lb slider 5th wheel hitch and 600 pounds of payload. We drove 1000 miles from Texas to Indiana driving 70 or 75 mile an hour most of the way. We averaged 19.5 miles per gallon. Going to Texas from Indiana with our 18,500 pound fifth wheel with height of 13‘7“ and driving 65 mph the hole trip. We averaged 10.6 mile per gallon for that thousand miles. The truck had 8,000 miles on it.
@@markhollingsworth9496 what engine and rear end?
@@eddevarona8448 He says in the comment lol. 6.6 gas.
The mirrors are a $530 option on any model up to LTZ (standard).....much better than std mirrors with more features
Would be interesting to see what gas milage would be hauling +20k trailer.
I don’t need one but I’m getting a diesel, they just sound so good.
That 6.6 litre gas engine is not too shabby.
Sure isn’t lol! I was very surprised how well it kept up in the lower gears… One of my subscribers, Matthew Anderson said Duramax would have pulled harder if I had locked it into 1st and turned on Tow/haul 👍🏾
Worked for gm for 12 years .... a Cummings with a Alison transmission.. would be the best of both worlds
Great video! I just ordered a 2023 2500 gasser. Ill check back in and let you know what i think if the power and acceleration as well as gas mileage
Did you ever get the truck?
@@natebrunet1700 yes I did! The 6.6 gas engine is an amazing performer pulling heavy loads. My camper hits the scales about 8500 pounds and it pulls it with ease.
I think the 2021 6.7 Cummins, the 850tq one lol, is the best engine. Not the most HP or tq but the best pull and reliability in my opinion. They do more with 6 cylinders that the others try to do with 8.
Nice side by side comparison. That Duramax setup is looking pretty good. But if Ram ever upgrades that 6 speed to the 10 speed, they'll be unstoppable.
Thanks Greg!
In my experience with my wife owning the gas and me owning the diesel versions of these almost exact trucks the difference of the I guess feeling of the trucks is minuscule. When I tow with the 6.6 gas compared to the diesel both feel like there isn't anything behind you. There both extremely powerful engines
Stopping is the biggest difference since you have the exhaust brake although GM’s is not that great
Thanks for the info👍🏽
Completely agree. I own the the 6.6gas and my budy owns the diesel. My budy tells me all the time that if he knew he would have saved the 15k and got the gas.
You must not be towing shit for weight
Up to 18k lbs you can’t really feel the difference
I ordered mine (2022 3500 Crew) a few weeks ago and hope to get it by March. We went with the gas because we just don't drive the trucks enough to have a diesel. My wife works for GM and if you don't work the diesels, they become temperamental. I really appreciate this video! This will likely be my last brand new truck and so far I'm in love with it. AND, we will be changing out the tires! Every review I've seen says there is a lot of floating in the front end.
I'm curious to see the Ford 6.7 vs. the new Godzilla 7.3.
I have a 2021 E450 RV with the 7.3 and so far (5000 miles) have nothing bad to say about the 7.3. it's a 29' class C RV. I'm averaging 11 to 12 mpg which is great for an RV.
Great comparison- if I decide to go Chevy I will give the dealership a call
🙏🏾
If there is an external oil filter on trans, it is a true Allison trans.Otherwise it is the joint effort trans of Ford/gm.
Really wish you knew what you were talking about. Y'all love to spit out false information.
Have 20 21 Chevy Duramax and have had 4 of these trucks in the past Ten years,as far as fuel economy goes it’s about
15 mpg around town and highway that’s about as good as it gets.
If you stay completely on the highway and go through a full tank of fuel you may hit 20 mph if the truck is without load
All 4 trucks have been about the same
I got 21.5 out of my 2020 GMC 6.6 gas, crewcab standard box.
Front seems like it would sway more because of the IFS? I own two 2500HD Duramax trucks and if anything I feel the opposite they have more sprung weight then say a straight axle truck that has more unsprung weight so the IFS suspension has all that weight above the suspension that acts as if it’s pushing down that much more when say a straight axle the weight is below the suspension more weight just flopping around not doing a whole lot. I tow 90% of the time my 2013 lml that use to pull my little 18’ work trailer that weighs 8k and my toy it’s on a 30’ tri axle low boy gooseneck trailer is modified it weighs in at 7800lbs alone and my toy that rides on it a 8000lbs 2005 ccsb fully built engine and drive line LLY Duramax 1100hp sled pulling truck with the factory style IFS and 2000lbs hanging in front of the front bumper that suspension makes those tires hug the track and bite in so I wouldn’t say they sway just because you think they will because your making a wrong statement if you don’t know don’t guess because you will only make yourself look bad. Oh and the tires Firestone Transforce I had two sets of those on my 2005 before it was a dedicated pulling truck (videos on my CZcams channel feel free to check them out) I got around 45-50k out of each set and i absolutely loves them so I bet your feeling is the new tire issue all the little rubber Titties the oily residue and all newer AlT and MT tires have a little sway in them just because of the lug depth that goes away after a little wear.
All those gears keep that diesel right in the peak of its torque curve under acceleration!
I have the 2021 2500HD - gas 6.6 (LT -Z71) crew cab -8 foot bed. I've had it for a little over a year. I'm getting 13mpg average. When I tow I get around 9 or 10. It's either the way I drive (I do have 401 HP) or its the 18" Offroad tires (or both), that gets me a lot lower mileage than others are saying. Any one else have the similar setup (The tires are the stock offroad tires - very aggressive looking - I think they're Nokians).
Dont forget you need def for the diesel so even though your getting better mpg than the gas your still paying the same if not more for a diesels mpg compared to gas.
True however resale value on full-sized diesel trucks, crush gassers. Because of reliability with high mileage.
I've been thinking about going gas, lower operating costs, since I don't tow anything. Also, the type writer ticking sound drives me nuts. I know it's normal for the Duramax but it is hard for me to get use to.
RAM has a similar ticking sound too which is from the SCR I believe
@Greg Hunt, unfortunately, my ego :)
I have three older Chevy trucks that I keep in good condition. A 2001 2500HD excab Duramax LB7 3.73 gears 92,000miles 22+ mpg highway 15-16 city; . 2004 3500 crew cab, long bed , gas 8.1 , 4.10 gears 262,000 miles 11 mpg highway, 9 mpg city.; 1999 2500 excab gas 6.0 14 mpg highway 10-11.5 mpg city 212,000 miles. My trucks pull heavy loads of hay on a 5,500 lb gooseneck 24ft. Mostly my 3500 is always hooked to the gooseneck. Also pulling farm equipment from one farm to the next. Because I don’t live in a mountainous area if I bought a new Chevy truck it would be the 6.6 gas. On a long trip pulling a load I would have to use my 2001 2500 Duramax lb7 because of the much better fuel mpg.
Hey man , I recently bought a 2023 Chevy High Country 2500 diesel duramax but I had very bad mileage results pulling my RV 7100 pounds dry getting only 200 miles with a 36 gallon tank, I really expected much more, even with my old Toyota Tundra truck I had best result, really bad fuel efficiency 6 mpg , do you think is that normal ?
Need to do the 6.6 gasser on a dually
That’s a 🦄
What tires would u recommend for the 6.6l gas
It's a mistake to calculate "fuel economy" in Miles Per Gallon. 16MPG on $2.75 regular gas is better than 19MPG on $3.50 diesel. Unless you are pulling all the time, the gas engine makes a lot more sense.
there is only roughly 30 cents price difference between gas and diesel from Missouri to Texas.
Until you sell it maybe. Even if you keep it long term the value is in diesel.
Does the 6.6 gas need 93 octane?
about the transmission, that whole ordeal reminds me of the floyd rose tremelo and licensed floyd's on guitars. i have two guitars with FR tremelo's ones licensed and the other is a FRT500, and its pretty much the same thing. the same problems occur if you dont treat it right
Great comparison jb did you see tfl video of the 2023 chevrolet it's on tfl now channel there saying the 2023 are projected to have 505 horse 1085 torque I kinda believe its capable of that watching gale banks channel killing a duramax
Yup this seems to be a popular rumor especially after GM stepped their interior game up on the /2 tons! We shall see how it shakes out, exciting times! Thanks 👍🏾
I ended up with the gas for no other reason then I am moving to a much colder climate and I wasn't sure how the diesel would do in prolonged negative temperatures
GM's lack of aftermarket warranties steers me away from looking at either of these. Ford and Chrysler both have the Zeigler warranties which are amazing.
CDJR has a MOPAR warranty
gm factory extended warranty only way to go, never buy aftermarket warranties, ever!!!
$10,000 price difference? That will buy over 3,000 gallons of gas. At 17 mpg, that’s 51,000 miles! Now compare price of injector repair and with gas you’ll be almost another $10,000 ahead. I cannot justify that for ME. I don’t tow day in bad day out either. We have a travel trailer and take regular 3-7k trips, but it’s not everyday. Hopefully you can see MY point of view on this, not trashing diesels, just couldn’t justify for me and my family.
Do you think I would have to go diesel if I have. 5th wheel gwvr of 16500?
Yes
Don't forget about all that junk Def diesel owners have to buy. And all the Def related and emission issues.
The diesel truck will be worth 10k more than the gas when you go to sell it.
Just buy a used diesel… done ✔️
My opinion chevy silverado is the best looking of the big 3
Great video. Super helpful!
But when you add the cost of oil changes and fuel filters and the higher price of Diesel and then when you have to pay for new injectors that’s a big cost
JB keep it upon content 👍🏼Have you had any of these trucks above 100mph? Do they have governor? Curious to know
Thanks, I haven’t had them that high but they typically cut off at 105 MPH
@@JB_WhoWork paying all that money to have it capped out is BS! Is your ram like that?
Yup
Tires are the biggest factor though
@@JB_WhoWork true I have a 06 Sierra Denali crew cab that doesn't have governor and she moves!
Good review. Both trucks lacking interior. Chevy/GM has to catch up to ford and ram
They’re redoing the half tons for 22, so I’m assuming that the 23 HDs will have the refresh
Mmm idk man, fords just feel super plastic and cheap to me.
Can you retest now with the 10speed in the 2024 gas 6.6
6.6L HD Duramax engine and Allison transmission all the way bro not a problem. Duramax Produced by Isuzu Japanese Diesel engines. Allison transmissions one of the best transmissions worldwide.
I buy gas trucks now.Got a 2021 Siverado crew cab work truck.2wd full 8 ft.bed.The 6.6 Gass does a good job for us.Pulls a trailer day I and day out. With my equipment in the trailer it weighs around 6,000 sometimes close to 7.The truck does burn some gas but the motor has plenty of power. The initial cost of a diesel plus nowadays with all the emissions on them they don't get the mileage they would not having it.So when you figure in the initial cost plus now diesel is running a dollar and a half more per gallon plus you have to use DEF.So the extra 10-15 grand for the diesel combined with the fact they don't get much better mileage and they don't last as long with the emissions of them because of numerous reasons(heat and so on)It isn't worth it to buy a new diesel. The truck will never make it long enough to get your money out of it.
wonder why the limit the gas to the 6 speed when they have a good 10 speed they put in the half tons with a more powerfull motor
Just drove from wisconsin to Texas in my 2021 duramax ltz 2500. Best 400mile avg 19mpg. Best 50 mile avg 23.4 best 25 mile avg 26.4. Speed avg 70mph some stretches 65 some 75 used cruise control 98% of the time. I've found that I get far better mpg using cruise control than me hitting the gas myself. Truck did 2 regens in 1200miles. I've now got 11000miles on the odometer
Thanks for sharing 👍🏾
You need to hand calculate it, my GM's always get 2-3 mpg less than the readout.
I'm in the market for a new truck. I usually buy diesels but I have a 2013 2500hd duramax setting in my garage that looks brand new but i don't trust it anymore since my cousin's CP4 fuel injection pump went out on his Duramax and stuck him with a $10,000 dollar bill. When chevy does a total recall on these trucks and fixes them then my confidence will be restored in GM products. Until then I think I'm leaning towards the dodge.
The same thing happened to my 2015 Duramax
Around 100k miles
Gonna keep the motorhome w the 5.9 and just wait for that cybertruck
That should be interesting
Nice
