-40 on your temp sensor means it's not connected or sensor bad. These have two sensors, one for the instrument cluster and another for the pcm. Also, with this being obd 1, the engine may need to be running for scanner to work. Get the exhaust system fixed, and the bad MAF sensor is causing a lot of your rough idle issues.

-40 might explain the catalytic clogging too - dumping too much fuel thinking it's in warmup.

Early GM fuel injection is kinda sensitive to some inputs. Check the temperature sensor. Mandatory for cold operation. Also, that engine is hunting a bit. Probably a CPU input issue. Air flow sensor, temp, O2. You are on the right path.

This Grand National is an absolute jewel, especially for what you paid for it. I would lean right in on that Coolant Temp Sensor & wiring. At a reading that low, it’s trying to dump a bunch of fuel & will make it run terrible. Ive replaced a bunch of CTS on 3.8 GM’s, Esp OBD-1 cars. Keep at it though and you’ll have a hell of a ride. Get her right & I’ll bring my 18 WRX down-line em up and have some fun💯

Put your scanner on and check what the parameters are with the oxygen sensors. I was chasing a similar surging idle situation and a hard stumble fall on its face situation on my 93 Chevy 2500. O2 sensor was working, but lazy. New 02 sensor made all the difference!

Hello, my wife and myself own one of these cars. Bought new in 1986. After 25 years of owning this car sold it to some guy in Iowa. We Went through 3 turbos and a lot of tires. Bought a lot of parts from Kenny bell. Had the engine rebuilt after around 15 years. Only one person new how to work on my car in South Carolina. Dealers would just scratch there heads. Good luck with your car. They are really a pain when they start acting up. Our car ran rough too when cold.

I'm from Poland and I love to watch content on cars out of europe, we never had these cars so altough they're mostly old it feels like something new to me. And I enjoy watching american people on european cars, it seems like most of them are like everyday exotics for some people in US while they're everywhere here and everyone drives european cars here, it's quite interesting to see your take on them.

Randy...I own a 87' GN the first thing that i knew was to bring as much AIR In and then make as much Exhaust Out done correctly 100% u will b amazed what this car can do with just that. Air In Exhaust Out fast as possible. First thing is taking off that crapy hose material connected to the turbo intake and throw out that old busted MAF sensor in the trash and get your self a Cold Air Intake that has a K/N filter. The MAF sensor your gonna have to pay the $$ for a NOS or what i did is get the LS MAF and go that route that is a BIG reason why your GN is running like shit Randy after u complete just that first step then look at cracks and leaks like the one on your manifold and others. Great content Randy can't wait to see next video

Hi Randy, kudo's to Jessica she was right on the money and truly the voice of reason on this one. I think once you get that exhaust manifold replaced or reworked and the exhaust redone then I think everything will be fine. I think you need to leave the Monte SS stock and then do a few tasteful mods that would increase the HP then with the money you saved you need to find a 1987 Cutlass 442 and a 1987 Pontiac Grand Prix and fix them up as well and then you need to race them, with Monkey Wrench Mike driver and Santa Workshop's as a driver and then you need one more driver who could it be, I think Jessica as the Stig, she wouldn't have to show her face you could disguise her voice and she could be the fourth driver, you of course would also drive. I feel with the right billing and build up it could be epic. See what your video's do I'm giving away million dollar idea's for free, just kidding, I always enjoy your video's and I look forward to the next one, now get some sleep. 😀✌❤

That OTC tool was very useful back in the day. I bought one when it first came out, I think it was a grand way back then. I still have it to this day and use it every now and again when the oldies come in the shop. I hope you can get it working. Once you have the basics sorted out such as the ECT and a working 02 sensor use the block learn to determine if its running rich or lean. 128 is center with no correction, above 128 is lean adding fuel and below rich subtracting fuel. Of course it will look at different cells depending on load. Block learn is like looking at long and short term fuel trim on an OBD2 system. If its running rick look at the purge valve and see if it's stuck open, I remember changing a lot of those back then. Good luck and keep at it, you will figure it out.

@autoauctionrebuids Way to go Randy! You are on the right path. Addressing your catalytic converter (just run a test pipe if ya want) and that crack on the passenger side header will probably solve most of your drivability issues. Sounds like it runs quite a bit better when up to operating temperature. It’s very common for that drivers side header to crack too. I am glad you found Kirban Performance. They have a ton of knowledge. In fact if your lucky you can call and pick Dennis Kirban’s brain if you get stuck on something. For your OTC you can verify it works on your Monte Carlo SS. I’m sure you’re on it once you get rested up. Oh and for your spark plugs, many say not to use platinum plugs on these cars. I usually just run the plain old AC Delco CR43’s.

I am quite a few years from when I worked on this stuff but I just remembered a car similar to the problems of the Grand National besides the car hauler problem I just commented on. It had the same exact problems as the grand national with the cracked manifold. Down stream from the exhaust manifolds are probably 2 cat. converters and 2 ox. sensors in front of each converter and that side where the cracked manifold is they are thinking very lean exhaust. I put a manifold on that side wala it ran fine. I even think the was not the problem at all.

Casper's ground relocation kit Maybe this should help.
From a forum: Since I did my first head gasket job many years ago, I have NEVER replaced the engine harness ground rings on back of the head, it is way too difficult.
Since GM installed these grounds on an intake studded bolt at the trans dipstick, I decided to follow their example. :)
Just exchange the bolt with a stud from the front of the intake where the factory lifting bracket is mounted as that bracket is expendable, and use that as your ground terminal! :D

Exhaust leaks at the manifold allow air in as well as exhaust out...the oxygen in the air leaked in messes up the oxygen sensor readings, big time. you can't get it running decent with the leak present. The rattling cat converter isn't helping matters either.
