Jim Casella's and his team do an amazing job at writing. It is SO under appreciated in my opinion. It is great to listen to and a BLAST to play one of his books!!
Finally...I was at this lot and I was so relieved when I heard them. These videos don't do much justice...the book this year is freaking nice. So musical.
Took me bloody forever to figure out what they were playing, but I finally learned the snare part for this whole drum break, just from watching this video... and it's AWESOME.
This is one of the most disciplined set of drumers i have ever seen, i have been in a few competitions, but no one has come close to the amount of discipline i see here.
This was one of my absolute favorite Cavalier shows. Too bad it didn't really get the publicity and credit that it deserved. This show was WELL put together and I was AT finals night, and many of us thought that the Cavaliers WON that year. Watching this was like watching a movie at the movie theater. It had plenty of suspense and action. The Cavaliers DID take us deep into ancient Japan where we could experience the ancient culture of back then!!! It was a history lesson with Asian aethetics. Phantom Regiment Spatans show was great and unforgetable too (with classic Drum Corps) and Phantom was simply super clean, but this Samari show literally had a impact. But, I guess Phantom hadn't won a DCI championship by themselves at the time, so I think that the judges gave it to Phantom. Well, that's still good for Phantom and the kids in that Corps. So, it's all good!. Phantom was still great!
Factual information. I'm no Percussion guru, but I come a family of musicians. One year we watched the movie Drumline and I was beyond impressed. Then my uncle, my dad and his buddies pretty much said, "You thought that was good? Watch this." And they pulled up this clip. Now I've watched a lot of drum breaks in between 2008 and now (2020), none felt as legendary as this PRACTICE...
Random but good rudiments here after the drum break.. snares sound amazing. tenors and basses very solid. but man this doesn't look easy.. gotta love them cavs.
oh hell yeah dude i got to watch them warm up finals night!! basses one and two had some RIDICULOUS splits that made me whoop out loud. good times. those cats were on point.
the center tenor was my indoor instructor and my main drum teacher marched cavies in 2006 and my other instructor was on the 2008 SCV snareline. WE GOT GOOD 0_0
I really like the roll into the singles near 1:38 I've listened to it maybe 25 times today and can't find the transition if I don't watch. The camera not being able to follow the sticks during the singles adds a pretty cool effect.
the center tenor is also the section leader, for the same reason as the snare, so everyone can listen in to him (or her, him in the cavaliers case). And in case you were wondering, the bass drum 2, the second smallest, is always the bass section leader, and cymbals are kind of random i think.
im a tuba, but, man i give such respect to drum lines all over america. drum line kids don't fuck around. playing any of those drums takes skill. and in all honesty, if i was in drumline, i would try bass.
Your right, I completely forgot about the drum major having to listen to the battery. I remember our instructors would always tell our drum major to listen in on us because battery are time keeping masters. =P Good times.
You're actually correct albeit unintentially. The drumline is not taking their tempo from the drum major. The drum major is taking his tempo from the drumline so he can in turn give direction to the rest of the corps.
Catchy 1:12-1:27 Bass Solo at 0:45-0:55 is amazing Love the Tenor splits at 1:03-1:10 Snares Sextuplets at 1:27-1:30 is insane Sweet (Clean!) Singles at 1:40-1:43 Cool Visual/Snare Solo at 0:28-0:35
High school tenor player here. We watered down the split measure into a tenor solo in Sing Sing Sing, and it's pretty insane. I would've liked to just do this, but it's too freaking hard, even for our tenor line, which is actually pretty good.
This stuff is awesome... I hope I get the chance to play in a big line like this someday, at our school we've got three Basses, one Snare, and one set of Tenors (me)
One of those snares is now the assistant for the drum line at our school now. It’s crazy to see how good he is, since he’s not much of a show off, which I respect ngl.
Writing-wise, to me this was the best drum feature that year, hands down... especially when combined with the front ensemble's taiko drums and other Asian percussion instruments.
I am 13 and a beginning percussionist, and when i see this i cant help but think how the hell am I supposed 2 do that when i get older....lol....but seriously i am very excited to be chosen as a "drummer" : )!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Go Skiatook Bulldogs
13 years later this shit is still so hype!
For our center tenor's audition, he played the tenor break blindfolded on one leg
AYYYiTzMaC That's crazy!
sometimes I listen to this until I fall asleep because it's so beautiful
Zehra Horan Vanwyngarden igual
Jim Casella's and his team do an amazing job at writing. It is SO under appreciated in my opinion. It is great to listen to and a BLAST to play one of his books!!
The transition in the snares from the roll to the singles at 1:38 is amazingly clean and badass...
My favorite break of all time
Still my favorite video of all time
Tenors must have been starving.. eating the rims like crazy through that lick. :( My favorite feature too.
I hear that!
Hard books
The fact that the snares play their rolls during the snare break insanely clean and at 2 inches blows my mind.
probably one of the most awesome n sickest drumbreaks of all time!
are those snares ever so slightly tilted...?
Looks like it
I almost forgot to watch this today...
Finally...I was at this lot and I was so relieved when I heard them. These videos don't do much justice...the book this year is freaking nice. So musical.
Took me bloody forever to figure out what they were playing, but I finally learned the snare part for this whole drum break, just from watching this video... and it's AWESOME.
im so lucky, the tenor captain is the instructor of our drumline
This will forever be my favorite drumline video EVER!!! *Cavies Rule*
This is one of the most disciplined set of drumers i have ever seen, i have been in a few competitions, but no one has come close to the amount of discipline i see here.
i luv this drumbreak! the tenor skank part and snare visuals r soo tasty!!

every time i see this style of drumming i love it
Random but good rudiments here after the drum break.. snares sound amazing. tenors and basses very solid. but man this doesn't look easy.. gotta love them cavs.
oh hell yeah dude
i got to watch them warm up finals night!!
basses one and two had some RIDICULOUS splits that made me whoop out loud.

The basses was sick and the tenors was awesome hands down one of the best Drumlines I heard
the center tenor was my indoor instructor and my main drum teacher marched cavies in 2006 and my other instructor was on the 2008 SCV snareline. WE GOT GOOD 0_0
That snare solo made me shiver. I quit... forever...

I love how clearly the quad sound comes through. Gotta love cavies tuning
my brother used to play the snare drum he got to do Frameworks witch has to be my favorite they were bad ass
I really like the roll into the singles near 1:38
I've listened to it maybe 25 times today and can't find the transition if I don't watch. The camera not being able to follow the sticks during the singles adds a pretty cool effect.
If I could favorite this thing a thousand times I would.
Nice work. The Snare and Tenor parts are badass. Cavies FTW!
This feature, 2008 blue coats, and 2011 cadets were the greatest features.
Words can't express how freaking crazy this is. Those basses are ballin'
the center tenor is also the section leader, for the same reason as the snare, so everyone can listen in to him (or her, him in the cavaliers case). And in case you were wondering, the bass drum 2, the second smallest, is always the bass section leader, and cymbals are kind of random i think.

Just wen to DCI yesterday! Cavaliers beasted it, as always.
Can't wait to see the finals.

i like this, sounds very good.
ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUS!!!
Your right, I completely forgot about the drum major having to listen to the battery. I remember our instructors would always tell our drum major to listen in on us because battery are time keeping masters. =P Good times.
Best video i ever watch on youtube

ouu yeahh cavaliers you are the best
God I love this.
The last note cracks like a gun shot :D
goddamn. i hope to play tenors like that someday man
Simply Amazing!
Dope! Love it.
You're actually correct albeit unintentially. The drumline is not taking their tempo from the drum major. The drum major is taking his tempo from the drumline so he can in turn give direction to the rest of the corps.
I can hear MR. Hamilton saying it in my head now
"Ta ta ta ta ta..."
lol
the end how they do the drum roll, the into the snare shot,,,,epic,
yeah i would have to agree cavs have one of my favorite books this year. Bluecoats are owning it too.
I was that guy in the white shirt
Catchy 1:12-1:27
Bass Solo at 0:45-0:55 is amazing
Love the Tenor splits at 1:03-1:10
Snares Sextuplets at 1:27-1:30 is insane
Sweet (Clean!) Singles at 1:40-1:43
Cool Visual/Snare Solo at 0:28-0:35

It's not sped up....they're just AMAZING.
the singles at the end are insane.
Wow!! Mad Props!!!

@Thatonekyle you have no idea how much i agree with you on this
ALSO, I love the echo at the end. They play with So much sound
why are they so cool
Man the cavies are soo clean.. I like their sticking at 1:21. Very nice.
that's a clean line!!!
It was Phantom, Cavies were in second, with Bluecoats in third
This stuff is awesome... I hope I get the chance to play in a big line like this someday, at our school we've got three Basses, one Snare, and one set of Tenors (me)

Tastiest book ever written
holy hell. Amazing.
cant wait til my schools drumline adds 2 more snares. 9 baby ;)
I'll be a Junior in high school next year. Our snare and bass 1 will be Seniors and our bass 2 & 3 will be Juniors.
the little snare chunk from 1:23 to 1:32 is SO TASTY
The ninelet at 1:20 is my favorite part
Well, Crown played a lot of notes this season and they were really clean. Vanguard also played a pretty aggressive book.
i dont care who you are or what drumcore your in but if u can play bass...snare or tenors on this level your AMAZING
i love the snare visual around 1:23
each section was for the most part one sound :)
holy bass, tenor, and snare..
Writing-wise, to me this was the best drum feature that year, hands down... especially when combined with the front ensemble's taiko drums and other Asian percussion instruments.
haha i love the triple relax at the end. Blucoats use it but he does it with one hand
that snare feature's sick... good lord...
From 0:18 to 0:28...OH MY GOD SO CLEAN!!!!!!!
That's such a sick ass Book
Very nice!
I am 13 and a beginning percussionist, and when i see this i cant help but think how the hell am I supposed 2 do that when i get older....lol....but seriously i am very excited to be chosen as a "drummer" : )!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Go Skiatook Bulldogs
Soooooo clean.
@BrokenHeart9107 That's good to hear, just keep up with the hard work and who knows maybe you'll march drum corps one day
@Wowzrrrs Bostons tenor tech is the tech for our tenor line
