  • NC500 E2: Exploring the villages of the North Coast 500 in the Scottish Highlands by visiting HELMSDALE & GOLSPIE whilst learning about George Leveson-Gower and the brutal Highland Clearances. ➡️ See more from my NC500 Road Trip here → bit.ly/mwt_NC500
As I continued my self drive trip in Scotland around the North Coast 500 I stopped by two sleepy, quaint fishing villages along the east coast - Golspie and Helmsdale.
Golspie is a long, slim village with one main road running parallel to the waterfront. When the tide is out a beautiful sandy beach is revealed - perfect for watching the sun rise or taking a relaxing evening walk.
All across town the gigantic Sutherland Statue is visible at the top of a nearby hill named Ben Bhraggie. Its presence is awkward for some and it has been called Scotland’s most controversial statue. The debate is centred around the Highland Clearances and the part the 1st Duke of Sutherland George Leveson-Gower played in them.
A little further up the coast is Helmsdale - a newer village with grid plan streets, a historical bridge and a thriving harbour area. I’m glad I was able to stop by even if time was getting on, it was fun to walk around and see such a picturesque place with my own eyes.
After a busy day on the tourist trail I headed up to Lybster to check into my bed and breakfast - a place called the Taigh An T'Saoir.

Thank you so much for showing and discussing Golspie! My grandfather was from this little village, as were his parents and on back several hundred years. I have never been but have always longed to go! :))

My pleasure, it was wonderful to visit and take a look around. I really enjoyed my time in the north of Scotland, the whole area was spectacular. The Golspie waterfront was so relaxing, definitely could have stayed there longer! Fascinating to hear that so much of your family history is based in the village - hopefully you get to visit at some point in the future. Thanks for watching, much appreciated.

Thanks guys, I appreciate you watching! Maybe next time I'll hike right the way up to the base of the statue, it must be huge when you actually get there.

Thanks for watching Heidi. Yes the statue is an interesting one, I enjoyed learning about it! I really wanted to walk up and see it from the top but I just didn't have the time. I understand there's a trail that leads up from Golspie - the views from up there are wonderful also. Maybe next time. It was nice to visit both Golspie and Helmsdale - worth a visit if you're ever up that way!

Hello Shirley, thanks for watching. I arrived in Scotland on the 31st August last year and stayed for a week. This was recorded on my first day, the weather was wonderful - think I got lucky!

Quite. Interesting really that a southern English man dare tell the locals their history, we don’t really need you up here lol
