  • NC500 E5: Continuing my self drive trip in Scotland along the North Coast 500 & visiting John O Groats, Thurso, the Duncansby sea stacks & mainland Britain's most northerly point - Dunnet Head.

Perhaps the most famous section of the North Coast 500 passes John o Groats and its famous sign post by the sea, taking a quick photo here is almost compulsory and the location delivers some fantastic views over Stroma and the Orkney Islands way out in the distance. From there it's just a short drive up to Duncansby Head and a scenic twenty minute walk to the Duncansby sea stacks - an example of Mother Nature at her best.
Hiring a car and planning a self drive road trip during a pandemic can be a challenge but having the ability to go where and when you want makes it all worth it. No need for bus tours or public transport, I found I was able to cover so much more ground because I had my own ride. This video illustrates just how much you can do - I actually filmed it all over half a day having spent the morning in Wick. There is also a massive advantage to solo travel during the pandemic! It’s the best way to keep safe & it’s a totally invigorating experience. If you think solo travel isn’t for you then that’s the first reason to give it a try.
It's surprising how many people think that John o Groats is mainland Britain's most northerly point but that's not the case. Instead it's a spot about 15 miles west called Dunnet Head, a place very close to the North Coast 500 route. I stopped by Dunnet Head to take a look around and say that I'd been.
The final drive of the day was heading over to Thurso, a town of 8,000 people and a place that claims to be Britain's most northerly town. I had an hour to walk around its deserted streets, check out the beautiful church overlooking a memorial garden and get some dinner. Thurso was definitely worth a visit and I enjoyed what little time I had there.
So far, the NC500 has proved to be every bit as impressive as the travel reviews indicated it would be. As I've started heading west along the north-coast the landscape has changed - it's becoming more baron and feels much more remote and isolated. Looking forward to continuing the road trip along the North Coast 500 so keep your eye out for future videos!

It's a lovely area isn't it? I wish I had more time in Thurso, it's looked like a cool place and I would have loved to visited the coast close by. Thanks for letting me know the name of the church, It was super impressive as I was driving in.
