      17 and 18 lewis v vettel,
      half of 2019 was exciting with Ferrai's cheat engine,
      Only really 2020 was a truely boring season but it had some mad races like lewis on 3 wheels, the Mercedes burning up their tires in the 2nd silverstone race, turkey was mad. Last year had like 1 amazing race Singapore and maybe 3 good races LA, Dutch, Monza the rest were OK or boring.

Do you guys have amnesia or were you ecstatic that the Merc dominated for 6 years? And sure, Ferrari challenged them for a year but Lewis always had it in hand. To top it all off, you want to see Lewis, Newey and Andy Cowell in the same team - so you want Ferrari domination - is that right?!

Kind of like in 2021 when the Merc was "firmly" behind RB and then all of sudden it swung the Mercs way during the last 4 races. Don't kid yourself that the level of domination wasn't there - they won 8 constructors titles in a row! Somehow that isn't domination is it?! I think a lot of people saying this use it as a sort of gotcha against anyone saying max is winning because of the car. But seriously, just think about it for 2 seconds. Checo is a good driver, but he's not in that top group, I think we can all agree on that. Hamilton, Leclerc, Norris, and the other guys in the best of the rest group are on par or faster than Checo if they were in the same car. So how is Checo able to get P2? well he's quite simply in the faster car. And yeah, he's no Max Verstappen, so he has to fight for it, but if that group of cars behind were actually on par with red bull, those guys would absolutely be fighting with Verstappen for P1 and not Perez for P2.
      That being said, Hamilton is the only driver in that top group that I see consistent race performance from, but he's starting to lose that quali performance with age I think, and the other guys that have that excellent speed in quali like leclerc, they just don't seem to have the consistency over the season, or their team is making mistakes like we saw with Leclercs brake duct in bahrain. So I think Max would still be champion in equal cars, but I really don't understand how anyone can look at max driving off into the distance with the fastest car and say that it is max making the difference, he is only making the difference over his teammate while his car makes the difference over the other teams cars, because F1, whether you like it or not, is about building the fastest car, that's the whole point of a constructors championship.
      To be clear, i do still think max is currently the best driver on the grid. But he absolutely is not worlds ahead, that really is the RB20.

Heck they ran at least 2 different engine concepts far in advance to make sure they got it right, well in part at least but point is still there they mega committed to F1s new 2014 set of regs and doing so understanding the rules would not allow anyone to constantly and freely pursue more performance, they were set as soon as it all locked down and far in advance, was boring as H but still remarkable to watch so I did so anyway.

      When Mercedes dominated, there wasn’t a cost cap. They dominated and maintained their domination on pure merit. Every team could spend whatever it had and wanted to, in order to catchup and beat Mercedes. Even with the luxury of being able to spend what you want, the FIA tried every trick in the book to kneecap them. Party mode = banned, DAS = banned, huge amount of floor off the rear to hurt low rake cars, and so on; just to try and slow Mercedes down. In the end all they could do was overtly rig a result to stop Lewis getting title #8, but still wasn’t enough to stop Mercedes winning.
      These days if you steal a March, your dominance is assured; because nobody can spend enough to catch up. Without a cost cap, Mercedes would be right in Red bulls heels or maybe better.

      Yet it was not the same energy when Mercedes were winning. Instead they were constntly checked by FIA, things outlawed like Aero bits, engine modes, many innavationsand etc., constant regulation changes to slow them down so other teams would have a chance to catch up. And yet it was still when multiple different teams were winning races, not like now when team is so dominant it would have to break down for other teams to have a chance. It just shows big bias of the sport and how in particular it changed in last couple of years, when one domination is bad and other is good, feeling more and more scripted rather than a raw sport like it used to be.

    RedBull won championships with Renault powerplants. McLaren tried with Honda and gave up , and thought putting the championship winning Merc engine would solve all their problems. RedBull teamed up with Honda and the rest is history. Merc changed their concept in 2022 and it was a disaster for them and changed it again for 2024. RedBull changed a winning concept for 2024 and it is even better. Gives one good perspective of who has got the superior engineering and design team.

    • @Jonw8222
      @Jonw8222 Před 3 měsíci +2

      There has been two big things that made the Merc team stand out since they purchased the Brawn team in 2010. One is they usually have a British driver, so they have a lot of support from the media and narratives that float around in the paddock. The gossip, the rumours, the perception of things. Or to put it another way.. they have a lot of political pull in the sport, similar to the way Ferrari does. Whether it's being about how to influence rules changes, or how the sport is regulated. It doesn't ensure that you win anything, but it's important to have some control over things in this area. And outside of race weekends, the teams are always fighting about this and trying to gain advantages. Trying to ensure that the future will be brighter, in terms of how everything is regulated etc. It's sort of like how the drivers on team radio are always trying to get the team to support them more than the other driver, except it's the teams doing that vs the regulators of the sport.
      The second thing is an extremely dominant engine. With a big budget and competent technical team on that side of things. What helped them even more was the engine freeze and token system, locking in their advantage after the big rule changes. They started off with a huge advantage and they were able to sustain it and stay in front. Like you said, it didn't help for McLaren to use Merc power units later on.. but in those early years it did have a big effect. It dragged Williams right up near the front when Bottas was driving for them, for example.
      Merc can still build a decent chassis and during their dominant era, they refined the chassis to be better. After a few years.. yes, the chassis was really strong. But they aren't standouts in this area. It wasn't the thing that got them into that position in the first place. The chassis isn't or hasn't ever been their strong point. If you look at the last 14 years, when it's an engine formula they excel. When it's a chassis formula, they are often near the front but don't stand out. Which comes back to that first point.. about trying to get it back into being an engine formula again.
      What helped them was that the early years of dominance gave them a head start, and meant that when engines were starting to equalize, they were already starting from in front. In this situation, they did have a dominant chassis and this was their peak era as a team. But starting with equal engines, and trying to win based solely on the chassis.. they've never excelled at this. Same thing with Redbull and engines.. they have yet to prove that they can do this on the engine side. They relied on poor to average Renault engines, switched to Honda which appear to be very good, but are only now starting to build their own. Time will tell. Ferrari are generally strong in both areas.. being an all rounder but never usually being dominant in either. But combined as a package, they are usually near the front. And then their strategy (or something else) will mess it all up.
      To conclude.. the first point about how the sport is regulated is actually a really big thing. Look at 2005 with BAR Honda for example, or 2006 with Renault and the mass damper. When you have a clever part on your car that is in the grey area of regulations.. you can be told that you can keep it this year, but it will be banned for next year. Or you can be told to remove it straight away. Or you can be told that you are being banned for a few races. This ugly aspect of the sport has stabilized a bit in recent years.. and it's more subtle and less blatant now. But it always helps to have support from the fans, the media, the paddock etc. If you are perceived to be treated fairly or harshly when viewing F1 from the outside. It's surprising that there aren't already rumors of rule changes mid season, or complaints about specific parts on the new Redbull car. Because this used to be a standard thing anytime someone appeared to be fast or dominant. The sport is less tampered with than it used to be. It used to be a constant part of the discussion.. whether parts on the cars are legal or not, and that put a lot of pressure on whether or not they should be allowed to keep these parts. Mercedes were very good at managing this during their dominant era. And now Redbull are taking advantage of it. Redbull didn't create this, Mercedes did.. but they are currently taking advantage of it. On the one hand, there are less dark ugly dramas and tampering.. but on the other hand.. the entertainment factor suffers.

      True. If Max’s tire blowout at Baku and the first lap crash at Silverstone (which Lewis was at fault for as he got the penalty) alone had not have happened, Max would have sealed the championship before Abu Dhabi because those two incidents alone resulted in a net gain of 36 points for Lewis. Max would therefore have sealed the title at Brazil or Saudi. Also let’s not forget Bottas taking Max out at Hungary as well. People like to spin the narrative that Lewis was robbed just because of AD but conveniently forget that Max dropped a lot of points that season through no fault of his own, which was the only reason why it even went down to the wire in the first place

    As some have said below - the question is more why the other teams can't develop a consistently competitive car. The other teams must have guessed RB would find up to a second better performance that they needed some radical thinking to catch up. Max is definitely getting the best out of the car. Perez is not really a benchmark and other drivers would be much much closer on race day in the same car. Perhaps even quicker.............. debate!!!

    I am sorry to unbiased Brits out there, but gosh almighty I now understand why Ham is the way he is, he grew up to this, was shaped into who he is with the constant applauding someone in the media while from other side of his mouth hanging them more or less. Doublespeak the Brit way, by all means but be consistent, you never did this when Merc had closer to a decade of just turning up the wick and off we go. At very least RB did it without just turning on more power, did so with less wind tunnel time aso and while at it, give Max the darn credit he deserve, that too was never, ever a problem with Lewis and fair play, Lewis did drive well so deserved and have got no problem with it. Just this constant saying A but mean B and vise versa.
    Just go back to journalism, stop picking favorites and simply praise them all when doing something right.
    A better talking point, why is Merc not fast? This is all on Toto, where is the criticism?

    The cost cap pretty much hamstrings development whereas in the pre-cost cap era, teams could spend whatever needed to develop their car. It pretty much locks you in to whatever concept you have. Sure we saw McLaren bring some updates last year and challenge for maybe 1-2 races but it didn't change anything with respect to the title race.

    • @gelmir7322
      @gelmir7322 Před 3 měsíci +2

      BS
      Newey practically switched to a Mercedes inspired concept on the same limited budget and had no issue producing another monster car.
      Mercedes wasted 2 years of development and twice the budget on it and it amounted to nothing.
      This isn't an issue of budget. It's an issue of expertise.
      No matter how much the teams spend on their development, if they all are only just waiting to copy Newey's idea they will never be able to catch-up.

    Did anyone notice that the Mercedes cara were throwing *much* more sparks into the air than all the other cars... its ride-hide much have been extremely low... maybe wearing the plank into illegal.levels...? Was it checked after the race? Is such a clear difference in creating sparks a reason for the marshals to check those cars specifically?

    • @Redlingstein
      @Redlingstein Před 3 měsíci

      Yes Merc we’re driving ‘too’ low, especially in FP’s. All commentators on F1TV said something abt that. They had to drive higher in the race which ofc made them slower… Merc is risking DSQ again…. Hoping not to get checked…

    • @Redlingstein

    Because when faced with an all new Formula Mercedes didn't have the talent to build another dominant car. They were huge beneficiaries of the initial turbo hybrid era with a 24 month headstart on the new engine regs (look it up) and it took years for the other teams to simply get to the point were they weren't blowing up MGU's. They had 50-75hp advantage for 5 years at least. The chassis was just ok. Which is why RB/Max was still able to nick 10 wins in the period. Shoes on the other foot now and they where to stubborn to see they built a dogs ass of a car two maybe three years in a row. True story.

    I think it's incredibly lazy to dismiss Verstappen/Red Bull as having won the title easily after one race, and I'm surprised that so many so-called experts are pushing that narrative. It is, of course, possible that is the case, but you can't possibly say so for sure and just dismiss all the variables that led to what happened.
    What if Leclerc had been able to find that time he found in Q2 to grab pole? What if Mercedes didn't have their power issues? What if Leclerc didn't have his brake issues? What if Verstappen had an issue of some kind? What if there had been a safety car?
    What happened in the race happened, but there are so many variables that could have completely changed the race had things been slightly different. Consider that Sainz finished 3 seconds behind Perez, as well as all that we saw in testing, practice and qualifying, and really side-by-side Red Bull don't look way out ahead - Verstappen just had the perfect race while his rivals had issues.
