I will say that this movie gave rise to a very charming public service announcement in the 1990s: clips of Godzilla and son goofing around, accompanied by the theme song from "The Courtship of Eddie's Father". ("People, let me tell you 'bout my best friend...") The tagline: "You don't have to be larger than life to be a good dad...just spend time with your kids. It takes a man to be a dad."
Kumonga was so impressive to me. Imagine the work it took from many people to animate it. That final battle was fun and intense. When I watched it for the first time I kept yelling "watch out for the poison stinger!"

I have to be honest. I unironically like this movie. It has cute moments , and the ending is genuinely touching.

This was actually my first Godzilla movie.
Impressively, I still became a fan.
I love the idea that Kamacuras overhears others not thinking it's a big deal and just lowers it's head in defeat
This honestly used to be one of my favourite films as a child, mainly due to the giant Mantises and the Tarantula...
As crappy as the movie is, those things are pretty cool. Hopefully they got recycled into a film that actually made proper use of them.
I’ve told some of the people here about a fanfic I’m doing. I actually use a decent portion from this movie including a lot from the weather control being used on my version of monster island to keep monsters satisfied, as well as plenty of Kamacuras and Kumonga scenes.
@@shanelogan630 Kumonga was one of their better kaiju ideas.
It’s why the main focal point of my fan fox this far is the nostalgia feel. I’d like it to be anime/manga fashioned, with an FLCL color style to mirror the 60’s-80’s Japanese movie look, with the monsters more modern appearances from the 90’s to 2000’s movies so it’s like a double blast of nostalgia watching older familiar monsters designs. Kumonga in my story is one of the few that gets its old look as well, cause I grew up with the American Spiega version, so I’m the story there are in fact two. Spiega is a smaller male with a dustier brown color like when it initially emerges in this movie. Kumonga is the larger female and by far deadlier. The very first story we witness a mating ritual on the island when the main characters venture onto the monster island research center for repairs. The area was supposed to be clear but a scheme is uncovered by the main G-Force character that a small group of G-Force soldiers hating the main female lead for her love of monsters allowed the spiders to remain in their sectors as a means to allow her to be killed. Her knowledge saves herself and the team with her proving that though she hates G-Force she wouldn’t resort to allowing them to be killed on her watch. This foreshadows Kumonga’s own episode later when the scientist investigate the crumpled remains of Spiega, eaten by Kumonga who now has a large egg clutch buried in the valley on monster island. In order to prevent a population explosion the scientist has to go in and remove the eggs and put them in a cryo incubator in order to allow selective hatching. Of course Kumonga will not take kindly to her clutch being taken and chaos will ensue before Godzilla comes.

It's my understanding that Toho also threw a fit when Mystery Science Theater 3000 poked fun at a couple of Godzilla movies too (VS Megalon & VS The Sea Monster), which is why they only did a couple and they're tough to find now. The studio that made the Gamera movies sensibly took it all in stride and didn't give them any trouble over it, if anything MST3K was going to make people want to watch their movies MORE, in fact a lot of the otherwise obscure and forgotten movies they've riffed have gotten second lives thanks to their show.
I mean give me a break Toho, it's people in rubber suits kicking over doll houses and stepping on toy tanks and trucks, how fucking serious are people supposed to take it? Lighten up!

Bud... you have SEVERELY mischaracterized the franchise. How serious are people supposed to take it? Well, let's look at those totally unserious moments in the first movie when a widow huddled her children around her and said they were going to see their father in heaven soon as Godzilla stomped his way toward them. And how about later in the hospital when a doctor waves a GEIGER COUNTER over a small child and the instrument goes WILD!? Or how about when that small girl cries bloody murder over her dead mother being hauled away?
And let's not forget The Return of Godzilla (1984) where Godzilla destroys a Russian nuclear submarine and nearly causes World War III? How serious should people takes these movies? As seriously as each individual movie is meant to be taken. Don't paint the whole series with broad strokes, man. You do the entire franchise a disservice with that kind of rhetoric.
@@BioGoji-zm5ph You've got a valid point, though I still think the more exposure their films get the better even if it's in parody like MST3K and Rifftrax, the better for the franchise. It is still after all just science fiction about a giant monster, not a film about something terrible that actually happened or ever will, yeah sure movies like the first one had a certain level of seriousness and were meant as commentaries on nuclear weapons and power, but in the end it still has an amount of silliness to it given the effects. They just need to relax and not always come out swinging at people, that's all I'm saying.

@@duncananderson2113 This isnt true, Legendary Godzilla is a completely different continuity and Godzilla in Final Wars was confirmed to be the same individual from the showa continuity. Its why in that movie when he fights Anguirus, King Caesar and Rodan, he spares them because they were his friends in the showa period.

y'know, in a tiny handfull of scenes early in the movie(when he's brown and being stabbed), minilla actually manages to look abit cute. of course, all of these scenes happen to be ones where you can't see his face or make out proper details about his form.
so, i guess, a giant brown blobby froglet that you can't see the face of is kinda cute.

Japanese companies are very, very weird about reviews.
I actually don’t mind this one. Minilla is easier to take in Japanese. And the model work is beautiful
The "brainwaves" comment was meant to be an indication that Minlla's egg was giving off as a sort of SOS that he was ready to hatch. However the mantises felt the signal as well and tried to go for an easy meal.
Also, the 54 Godzilla and the new one were part of a large pod of marine reptiles that went undiscovered and were basically killed off when the H bomb went off. This egg isn't Godzilla's or the 54 Godzilla's, but it doesn't really matter in the end.
Quick watch it before Toho takes it down again!

For all the sh*t that the 1998 Godzilla movie gets (and well deserved), one good thing did come from it. The animated series that followed. I recommend any Godzilla fan to check it out

Whereas 98 had the intention of being a movie for Godzilla fans and failed miserably. So when I say 98 is bad, I mean a painful embarrassment

Here's my theory on the Son of Godzilla and wifey looks like a walking turd.
THEORY: those three mantis attacked the are you cracked it open, and in doing so forced the Son of Godzilla to be born prematurely and deformed. So what we have is the Son of Godzilla but then the way he does because he was a premature birth not allowed to fully develop.
That's actually a very common theory in the fandom.
Well, let's not forget that Godzilla himself also looks like a walking turd in this movie.

Son of Godzilla was my first true exposure to Godzilla. The other slight clips I saw didn't interest me partially because as a small tot the roaring overtook even the talking-I was confused as I had just starting to get used to my hearing aids. At the time Minilla sounded like an actual chick.

I know the struggle. I did a Godzilla Top 10 list and TOHO took it within seconds. No matter what I did they kept taking it down till I just gave up.

When I was a kid & this played regularly on non-cable tv (😡 w/the original dub) I never saw that pre-title plane scene. Godzilla walked towards the the camera & the title splashed across the screen. Never saw the plane scene until Tri-Star got their hands on this movie (😡 & chngd the dub).

It seems backwards that Godzilla loses to a moth, but slaughters mantes. Mantes are, for their size, extremely strong and deadly, and are known to kill lizards.

Part of the reason he's so weak might be BC he was hatched prematurely. If you pull a chick out of its egg instead of letting it come out on its own it wont have the strength to live for vary long. I'm assuming that is true for Godzilla's species too

This movie was re-dubbed in the early 2000s which is the version you reviewed. I grew up with a different dub which included dialog and funny voices. The old voices were funny and annoying just like Godzilla vs Monster Zero.

Wow, the Video Treasures VHS version I had as a kid doesn’t have the cockpit scene in it at all in the beginning. Just the storm.
As a kid, I vaguely remember a Godzilla movie with another smaller Godzilla who can instaneous grow up, fire smoke rings, and a had human kid as a friend who kinda had a Home Alone situation in his story.
That is called "All Monsters Attack'' AKA "Godzilla's Revenge"
