Why Shin Godzilla Won Best Picture in Japan | In Depth Review

  • This is an in depth review and analysis of Shin Godzilla. It assumes you have seen the film, and thus contains spoilers.
Released in 2016, Shin Godzilla (Godzilla Resurgence) is the first Japanese made Godzilla film since 2004. Written and directed by Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and co-directed with Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan), it was a massive critical and financial hit in Japan, even winning the 2017 Japan Academy Prize for Best Picture and Best Director.
But does Shin Godzilla deserve such adulation? Why yes, yes it does. In fact, it just might be the best thing to come out of the franchise in decades.

A bit of a hot take, but the Shin Godzilla Movie is actually a faithful recreation to the Japanese culture and history and putting an iconic monster in the modern situation. The critics that the foreign watchers point out are actually what makes it a realistic, terrifying Godzilla movie. It isn't some heroic or monster vs monster movie. Its a disaster, and its how Japan sees Godzilla to be, a disaster that stemmed from the wrongdoings of the humans.

Because they were raised to believe only a salaryman is a good husband, but those jobs are extremely hard to get in today's Japan (the kind where you literally stay your whole life in one company and just climb the ladder for the years spent there). Similarily, Japanese working hours are anything but to be proud of (those are getting better every year, so thank God for that). On the other hand, hard migration control is a wonderful thing. Promoting local businesses and traditions is a wonderful thing. Both are needed for a country to prosper. Probably the creepiest aspect of Godzilla's design aside from his eyes - those dead, beady, glassy, fish-like eyes - was the splitting lower jaw we first saw in the first atomic breath scene. It had no apparent reason to split; it was probably just a random mutation, likely from the radioactive waste it consumed. But it gave Godzilla an even more alien appearance, heightening his horrific nature.

I'm Japanese and struggle with film reviews from out side of Japan. They were just discussing about Godzilla size or made a great beam to the city etc etc etc...
The film targeted obviously Japanese and its government (as you can see from too much debating scene in the movie), and I think non-Japanese people could not understand why it has been made like that. This review released me from the struggle and it would be more interesting film, if you get know about 311 earth quake in Japan.

I think that you hit the nail on the head by describing this movie as the most realistic that a Godzilla movie can get. Nearly everything outside of Godzilla himself is pretty much how things would play out in such a situation. The bureaucracy getting in the way of action, the politicians trying to minimize the threat (which, as someone recently found out will get you voted out of office), and how the world would be affected as a whole as opposed to the Big G just being "Japan's problem".

I'd like to note the strategy used against Shin bears a remarkable similarity to the one the US military thinks would actually kill Godzilla.
It fails horrifically once it reaches the B2 stage and results in the loss of all 3 bombers and the utter devastation of Tokyo, simply because Shin evolves in response to the pain the bombs cause him and lashes out in all directions. All of this possibly due to Anno making it a snide jab at trigger happy military officers who're indoctrinated by their own training and experience to think bombs and bullets can solve every problem they're faced with, as he's done in the past with Eva.

This movie showed me another way to do characterization. You may not learn a thing about these people's private lives, but you do follow along and see for yourself just how hard they work, how they keep going despite exhaustion and immense pressure, and how they find ways to navigate the situation they're in. Sometimes that's enough to show what a character's made of. We didn't need or have time for a subplot about some guy trying to locate his lost kid and make up with his estranged wife during all of this.

Great film. The actress was the perk for me. Other than that, I could not find anything that made me go 'oh this is boring, too much government exposition' because it also harkens back to the original. A lot of that film, aside from that somewhat romantic trio, it was all about stopping Gojira. The US and other powers were briefly addressed because they had to be. The implications of this creature changed everything. Likewise, the existence of this freak of nature in Shin Godzilla would have been a major topic of discussion between global powers.
Of all the kaijus, Shin Godzilla was the most frightening. Not only because of its mega atomic breath but because of how it came to be and what it could continue to birth. The post credits scene is a testament to that. Not to mention that in one of the deleted scenes, like John Carpenter's The Thing, it showed that the blood he spilled was still alive. It was eerie.

And it was so strange to me knowing that Godzilla started out as a cautionary tale with symbolism of just how much destruction we can cause, only to turn into a sometimes goofy, sometimes spectacularly cool, but in the end pretty standard “giant monster fights another giant monster” character. And as much as I loved those films, what really drew me in to begin with was the overwhelming tragedy that Godzilla caused, and the visceral imagery mirroring true events that once were. I had wanted a modern telling of that old Godzilla and Shin Gojira was so much more than I could ever ask for. It’s such a beautifully depressing movie. And Godzilla really is a void as the song suggests. No bottom, no end in sight, not even hope. Just praying for beams of light without even knowing why.

The scorched skin of Shin Godzilla reminiscent of the cruel images of those that burned due to nuclear blast but lived, although briefly, with 3rd degree burns on 100% of their bodies. The old footage and pictures are haunting and the test footage of the us using pigs at test sites before hand also disturbing. It is unusual how I am wording this, but I feel that "Shin Godzilla" is both an appreciated AND unappreciated film! It seems more appreciated by the general film audience both here and especially in Japan, otherwise it would not have won all of those awards. And in this country, critics were generally pleased, garnering a solid 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is the G-fans that seem to be the most harshest on this picture. Some did not like the all CGI Godzilla and wanted the return of suitmation. Others thought it was too talkative (a criticism which I could agree with). And others thought it too political, too nationalistic. I wholehearted disagree on that one. If one wants to watch a G-film that has hints of nationalism, one has to look no further than "Godzilla vs, King Ghidorah".
"Shin Godzilla (I thought), was the most intriguing G movie since "Godzilla vs. Biollante"

I still highly enjoy the schmucky B-movies that came after, don't get me wrong! Ghidorah and Mothra are a packaged deal when discussing the movies. But I enjoy them in a different way than I do '54 and Shin.
And I agree with your last statement. IMO Biollante is a must for the American series. I'm kinda hoping that after we get Mecha Ghidorah, we'll get an after credits scene showing us a lab with a vase of roses.

Im not saying we should never do suitmation, but rejecting everything not using a suit would do the franchise a big disservice. The cgi of the shin godzilla is nothing short of amazing and i dont think theyd manage to replicate that look with suits.
Godzilla movies have often been talkative and as long as it dosent get too boring and takes away from what we want to see (looking at you godzilla 2014) im fine with it. Talking about godzilla or saving tokyo? Great! Talking about not godzilla? No thanks
Also too political and nationalistic seems like bs. It literally was a satire on japans inability to deal with the fukushima disaster. The movie even needed foreign aid (that didnt work), so nothing new there.

Excellent analysis. You even get the ending with the tail, which I believe to be a visceral scene meant to invoke sensations and thoughts in a viewer on a more primal, pre-verbal level. It is impossible to dictate what this scene "means" because everyone will interpret it differently and that's exactly the point. Good video and even made me think differently about a few things even though I've seen this film 10 times and the original Evangelion 3 times.

Shin Godzilla is my favorite version and movie of Godzilla because it’s about him doing what he’s suppose to do, DESTROY HUMANITY and uses real life events that happened. It is really a masterpiece in my opinion. And I thinks it’s great.

i like how most of the movie takes place during the day time. you can see everything that happens clealry.
then look at the legendary zilla movies and even pacific rim that take place 80% at night time during rain storms and the camera is cutting here and there.

    • @15r52
      @15r52 Před 3 lety +10

it still confuses me. like doesn't it cost way more to render all these rain storms, reflections, different angles when all we really want is a clear shot of the action?
it's something Toho understands very clearly but NA directors can't fathom. (zilla vs kong looks like huge step in the right direction though)

This is an excellent review, and your thoughts, ideas, and thematic breakdowns helped me enjoy the movie on a deeper level. I rewatched it after watching your review and caught things I missed previously. I hadn't noticed the main human character's titles kept expanding throughout the movie. Your outlining the themes of government bureaucracy struggling to meet unexpected disasters, satirizing their failures during the tsunami and Fukushima enriched the warching experience. As you pointed out, they went from one meeting to another room to have a meeting, which is exactly how government often works. At one point, they cant decide what governmental agency is supposed to be in charge. Such a great movie on so many levels, and your review did a great job pointing them out. Thank you.

This is simply a great movie, period, and I believe hands down it is the greatest of ALL Godzilla movies, including the first, and the 2014 version, which is a quick second place. Bravo!
