Carrera Digital 132 No Magnet Slot Car Racing

- We removed the magnets from our Carrera 1/32 '66 Pontiac GTO and Porsche GT3 RSR slot cars to run a few races. Whether you refer to it as No-Mag, No Magnet, Magnet Free, or Magnetless, the idea is the same -- the slot cars don't have as much traction thus a more delicate touch is required to drive. The timing on braking points, speed carried though a turn, and throttle management is more critical than when running the cars stock. Races are run on a Carrera Digital 132/124 track approximately 75 feet long.

I'm afraid you've bested me on the Strombrecker 1/32 as my first slot car set was an AFX HO scale in 1977 when I was seven years old. You are still racing slot cars now, though I hope.

Too young to remember the 60s, but my first slot car track was Aurora/AFX in the mid 70s. Transverse motors I remember. Wish I still had that set.

@@johnniehobby yea I'm truly blessed with the wife haha. it is indeed expensive especially starting out so ill probably start with the GT Face off around 400 bucks and work from there very excited looks like tons of fun particularly the digital set up that you can connect via app would be cheaper to start analog but i id rather go dig. thank you for responding so quick and you for sure have a new sub whos looking forward to all new content out of you and slater you guys do great work and the editing is awesome!
I have a starter track, but would like to start expanding. Any advice on how to accumulate track and if there are certain accessories to get first? Love all your videos. Used the tire and car tuning video.
We just started on a script this last weekend for our next video which is going to address exactly your questions. We figured it would be perfect timing for the holidays for those that get a starter track under the tree and want to start expanding. Keep an eye out for it, hopefully we'll have it within a week.

This track is about 75ft long so we do run one power tap at about the halfway point.

Here's the instructions to control slot cars from a remote location:
1. have your brother break quarantine and come over to race slot cars.
2. video races being sure aforementioned brother isn't in any of the shots.
3. film a clip with a bunch of techno-babble about how you can connect your slot car track control through the internet.
4. film brother pretending to follow slot cars around the track and display it on a monitor sitting trackside.
5. post on CZcams.
Sorry for the deception. Although, being a software engineer I could probably figure out how to actually make this work, but for purposes of the video we took a shorcut.
@@johnniehobby Awww man I feel like a sucker....lolol. I thought I caught all the jokes but that one I fell for hard. After watching alot of these German videos with Carrera and alot of their innovations I thought you guys came up with something great or found some software on the internet . Well if you are an engineer , remote racing is feasible . Although probably not a whole lot of demand for it. Keep up the great work and the humor with these videos!
Incredible video series, thank you! This really helps everyone mitigate a lot trial and error by viewing your videos, and not to mention super entertaining. I’m an older guy less interested in breaking the speed of sound with the small HO size car sets, so the high-quality Carrera size track and 132 and 124 cars seem the best and more realistic in the car driving characteristics. Would 124 size cars be too much of a hassle to attempt, or is 132 the best path for a noob? Since 124 Carrera sets are hard I find, is a 18v transformer change only needed to run 124 for a 132 purchased track set...and then buy 124 cars? Then you can run either?
As far as 1/24 goes, they aren't any more or less of a hassle than 1/32 but do cost about 40% more. To maximize the fun, however you'll want borders for the track as they'll drift a lot more than the 1/32. And yes, all that's required to run the 1/24 is the larger 18v power supply. If you start with a set that has the 1/32 that's not bad either, especially if you have guests, or children (or grandchildren) race. They can run 1/32 -- at least until they get the hang of it -- and save wear and tear on your more pricey 1/24 collection.

Are the first ones 24s? they look huge! I race 32s but still have not learned to avoid crashing as much as I do (I kind of blue the very slippery tires my cars have)
All of the cars in the video are 1/32, but those old 66 Pontiac GTOs were big back then so they look big in 1/32 scale as well, especially when compared to the Porsche 911s. We do have 1/24 scale cars also and when those are on the track there's no mistaking them -- they're monsters. BTW: If your cars aren't handling well you may need to true your tires. Check out our video titled "Tuning a New Slot Car (for non-slot nerds)." It helps tremendously not on just new cars but cars with older tires that may have aged and shrunk or have glazed over.

That setup is approximately 75 feet of track. Just a quick one we threw together. Still working on designing the larger 125 ft track for club racing, just can't the club together quite yet.

If you have Ultimate Racer 3.0 track planning software you can download the file and open it to get details on all the track pieces used, overall length of track, etc.

If you can do that but not sure what some pieces are (radius 2 or radius 3 turn for example), let me know I should be able to provide the info.

We wish Carrera made more of that old school muscle, but it's mostly the GT3 and DTM cars, which are cool, but not as cool as a '66 Road Runner. That, fortunately, is currently available from Carrera which I have on order right now.

I took the rear magnet out once I installed silicone rear tires because there was too much grip.
Carrera 1/32 '66 Pontiac GTO's so sweet!. Cars equipped with lights or did you install head and tail lights? Do you have a link or video on adding lights? Love the Canadian Booze... you guy must be up north. KIddos want lights may have to hit the Kentucky Booze to accomplish this task!
We had to add those lights. We were thinking about making a video on adding lights but wasn't sure how much of a demand there was for such a thing. You're the first one to ask, but who knows, maybe there's many more out there that would be interested. We've got two '69 Torino Talladegas that have no lights because they are modeled after stock cars. It would be nice to have lights on those so maybe use them as the demo for the video. If we do that vid we'll let you know as soon as it's posted.
Yes, we're up north. When we were 19 and 20 we'd take the tunnel under the river to Windsor where we could drink legally. Probably where we got our affinity for your excellent brew.

Where did you guys get the gto's i love them
The GTOs were produced by Carrera maybe 6-8 years back. Like many of Carrera's cars they are limited production and they don't make them any longer. Too bad because had I known at the time they wouldn't be available for long I would have bought all the others in the set.
Please tell me which chip you used to digitize your GTO's. Where did you place the chip in the car? Thanks
These are the manufacturers digital versions. Although, they did not include headlights and taillights. We added those after. If you have an analog GTO, Carrera part number 26732 digital chip should work.
Them gto s looked real at first awesome detail on them you need some mopars
Carrera doesn't make too many of the classic street cars but I wish they did. However, there is a '68 Road Runner available which I've got on order.

I didn't realize the Jedi video had comments turned off. CZcams must have done that because minors appear in it. I've turned them back on (for now). Hopefully they stay on.

Hi-I’m with a club that races 1/32 scale no magnets. I have new racing tires and have used weights to help the cars hold the corners but they still really slide and come off the track (wreck) . How do I keep the car handling? Thanks

How do the cars look after running them hard for few months? Do they get any narly nicks or scratches on them from making contact or is it very minor damage?
The Carrera cars are extremely resilient. Both the structural integrity and the paint. We have yet to get any noticeable scratches or chipping. The paint can wear in a small spot on the edge of the rear bumper if they rub against a guardrails a lot.

Many years ago we used to run our HO race track with the train crossings as well. Much fun. I've never seen one of those crossings for 1:32 but that would be cool.

Definitely requires more finesse'. Gotta be careful about how much you slide, too. Otherwise you lose all your forward momentum and lose ground on the other guy.

Hi fellas, I just bought a pair of those Carrera 66 GTO’s and I need to convert them to run on my digital track.

The chip you'll need is Carrera part #26743. That has several plugs on it. One for power from the pickups, another to connect the motor, and three for lights (headlights, taillights, and flashing lights for pace car/safety car operation).
Our light conversion was custom. We added LEDs (3mm probably, don't remember exactly) directly to the bodies and held them in place with hot glue. We wired the fronts in series and the rear in series, added plugs to connect to the chip. As far as I know there is no kit for the lights where you'd have the headlights and taillights on a PCB that you can just slide into the chassis and plug into the digital chip.

What happens if you put the magnets upside down?
They behave the same way. Because the rails of the track aren't magnetized, only stainless steel, the polarity of the magnet in the car doesn't matter.

@johnnie hobby this is sick ........ im a mom mid thirtys with thw boys 4 and 9 im buying a slot car track for christmas ive been researching tracks for 3 months straight I've talked to bryan young but he is hard to get ahold of he is a slot car seller distributor. anyway ive also messages a few other slot car peeps that have channels aswell as you on youtube .... im new to the slot car game well anout to be .... i dont think i have enough room for a 1:32 scale track im sad about that .... the hard part is i dont know if i should get the digital carrera sets or the analog im looking at different sizes too id love a 32 scale but i dont know how much room i need for a simple track and should i get digital or analog please way in on this if you can ..... the drifting around those corners when i first seen it i was like siiiiiiiiiicccccckkkkkk , so cooool man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your basic 1/32 scale starter set from Carrera will take up an area of about 10 ft x 5-1/2 feet. Carrera track is actually 1/24th scale so you can run the larger 1/24 scale cars on the same track. Other manufacturers such as Scalextric has true 1/32 scale track so it takes up slightly less space. Another option is Carrera 1/43 scale. Larger than Matchbox cars but smaller than 1/32, so everything takes up less space. However, the larger the scale the more realistic the driving is.
Analog is a lot of fun but I would recommend digital if the price isn't out of reach. Digital provides the ability to change lanes, use an optional pit stop, run up to 6 cars at one time, and also run autonomous ghost cars as well. Also, you can easily limit the top speed of the cars as the young ones learn to drive without crashing a lot until they get the hang of it. As with 1/32, Carrera 1/43 is available in both analog and digital.
I wouldn’t be able to sit up straight.. that’s a solid effort, setting on the table..
