Shelley deserves more recognition for her part in the film
This role is already one of the most praised...
Honestly, I think she should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress. I find her terrified reactions to be even more chilling than Jack Nicholson's menacing performance.
@@harleyzethAre you high?!? Shelley Duval has never won an Oscar in her life, let alone for this role. You really need to check Google before you show people how uninformed you truly are.
@@harleyzethActually, she's never even been *nominated* for one!
Well, she was nominated due to this role alright... for a Razzie award!
I don't think any level of art justifies destroying another human being.
"suffer for your art"
Any Job.
Agreed. Unless a person chooses to subject themselves to something like that it’s totally unethical and the ends don’t justify the means
I tend to agree. Suffering for your art only applies when it is your own personal vision
The basis of fame is evil, destructive, smoke and mirrors; it’s the nature of the business.
Stanley was cruel to her. He should never have been allowed to treat her this way. No director should ever have this kind of power. Shelly you are a great actress. He was a monster.
Absolutely agree! I & many others still don't even get the point... Stephen King himself has said many times her character was *meant* to be STRONG! He wrote her as a strong independent woman! Why the hell Kubrick changed her into a *completely* submissive flower petal is beyond me and King. 🤦
@@Simone-Bucn Probably because he was a misogynist pig.

Bud Jack Nicholson is a pos. Great actor, completely awful as most from Hollywood are.
To hear Jack say "he was a different director with her" speaks volumes
Ah yes... The Golden Bear!
You know it’s bad when other co actors even start to pick up on it 😬😬😬 poor Shelly, he’s so evil. at least her work turn out really good but it ruined her for life 😞☹️
Not really.
He should've stepped in
He wouldn’t have been able to get away with his behaviour with Jack
That movie would have been very different without her. She just encompasses the sheer terror of her character's situation. Definitely one of the scariest movies of all time.
Lmao no
But knowing what we know now, it wasn't worth it.
Shelly Duvall was so beautiful when she was young and amazing in The Shining. She had an unusual beauty that was vulnerable and belied an elegance. She also played Olive Oil in Popeye with Robin Williams and was great. Really talented actress ❤
I like how honest she is about the experience.
Right? Like she isn’t just up there shilling for the studio or hyping the movie up. She is being candid about her experience, gut level- as we should
In the last phrase of that part she justify Kubrick ... These part don't like me.
As she should be. Im glad she spoke up about her abhorrent treatment
She (is)was brave and I loved her in that movie.
It was interesting to see her express exactly how she felt about him. The cynical look on his face appeared like he got off on giving her hell (being that he could see that his behavior was negatively affecting her). Or he went overboard with his shenanighans so that she could be the nervous wreck that he needed the character to portray in that role.
She’s been underrated in Hollywood! Her talent and instincts are impeccable!
clearly thats because she has a soul, unlike many in hollyweird
why does she look like coraline, if it was a liveaction

I love how Jack admitted that Stanley was a different director with Shelley. He saw how hard he was pushing her.
I mean, is the bare minimum
He also did absolutely nothing to help her AND if you check other quotes by him on this matter, he minimized the complaints of abuse she made and defended Kubrick.
I was also going to say he did nothing to help her! He got the accolades and she got suffering!

That’s because she was literally living a real life nightmare to mimic in the movie😢 I loved her as Olive in the movie Popeye though. Hopefully she was treated with more dignity with robin Williams on cast…
I thought she was totally WRONG for that role.

She should have won awards for her performance in this film. She was amazing ❤ Great actress.
Pay attention. She wasn’t acting. Her director was terrorising her.
I hope she got a % every time it plays. She was perfect for the part, but unfortunately not temperamentally suited, hence the "push" from Stanley, that's why she was CHOSEN... fragile but w/unknown, hidden mt.of strength. Funny he saw it, she didn't.

Poor Shelley was never the same after making the Shining.. My heart really breaks for her.. Nothing is worth that amount of cruelty.
People always say this but she just developed mental illness. The schizo kind. A movie didn’t do that to her, no matter how cruel the director was.
@WiggyWamWam Shelly said herself years ago in an interview that she was never the same after making that movie. It's not just an opinion when the woman said it herself.

even more so now that he's gone.

Would his work had been the same if he had been any different? That is something we will never know, probably not!
But just like when method actors get way too consumed by their characters the line gets drawn when you make others miserable and fuck with their lives. If not, every so called genius that pops up gets to think they can do whatever they want with others as long as the end result gets them praised, and we have enough of those people already in places far more dangerous than the film industry.

Art should never warrant abuse. It's a fallacy that it is ever required to get 'the best' out of people and such a statement in the routine justification abusers give. Like Michael Jackson's father for instance. Abuse can motivate people to achieve excellence but as a people we should be reinforcing that a person's psychological and physical welfare - spiritual too but not everyone believes in that - trump the creation of art/product EVERY. TIME. Pain is not the same as suffering. He could have used other methods or ways of communicating with her that got an even better performance.
Dude stfu. Loser giving lecture about things he has never done lmao. How many movies have you directed? I'll tell you don't answer: ZERO.
Of course abuse is bad, but I don't think this could be categorized as such and let's not pretend she couldn't have walked away at any moment if she wanted to. No one had a gun to her head or forced her to do anything that she wasn't willing to do. I've seen all the behind-the-scenes clips from the movie and I never saw anything from Kubrick that suggests abusive behavior. Sure, 100+ takes of one scene is rough, but being a perfectionist director who holds high standards from actors doesn't equate with abuse. That's just a tough boss. Directors routinely purposefully fluster actors before a dramatic scene because it often DOES fish out a better performance from them.

@LemonChickenSlurp okay, well id rather a worse shining where the actors were treated like human beings. Knowing that someone was abused makes the movie a worse viewing experience to me.
@@LemonChickenSlurpif not that means he isn’t a good director sooo
He was a piece of crap that man. He gave this poor woman PTSD. In todays day and age you can definitely sue for that.
He triggered her schitzophrenia
You can get the Union to stop a production for that
@@BloodOrangeSunstop being ridiculous!!! 😂😂😂
@@MissVictoryRolls1940 you seen her on doctor Phil 😂 shit was wild
In 2021, Shelley Duvall spoke of the emotional toll of performing the role of Wendy Torrance and the challenges of long days on the set but said that Kubrick was "very warm and friendly" to her. She also rented a small apartment in order to be close to the set. Kubrick’s daughter Vivian called the Dr. Phil episode about her “exploitative”.
she needs an award and the recognition she deserves.... before she is gone!"!
Hollywood need to do something right now!
She was so wonderful as a prevailing underdog.
Shelly is just as important to the film as Jack. She hit it out of the park in my book.
I think she is the standout actor in that film, Jack is great but she really carried that movie. Some theories are about that the movie actually depicts Wendy's mental breakdown and that what we see is all in her head. Its an interesting idea and I don't completely buy it or dismiss it, but it would help explain why he treated her the way he did and why Stephen King hated his adaptation of the book.
@@72twistmy theory is that the lead male role is just an abusive alcoholic the whole time. There isnt one scene where he isnt a total prick
@@72twistKing hates it because the movie is too different to the book

She’s just so uniquely stunning holy cow how could anyone exploit this woman? They were cruel to her on set 😢
Ah but if she were ugly it'd be fine to exploit her... wtf man
Haven't seen her in years, would like too, hope she is ok now.

Shelley was WILD in this iconic and unforgettable film.
I like that she stands up for herself to Kubrick when he is yelling at her.
Kubrick was the real Jack Torrence to her..

He abused her for the sake of “art” there is no excuse for that. I hurt bad for her, she went through hell. I wish for nothing but her happiness and healing in the future. ❤
Well she is with God now.
Healing in the future? The movie was filmed 43+ years ago...

@@adammalzahn7238she's still alive dude....
Shelly Duvall filmed this movie in the 80s. I’m sure it was honest mistake and you mean well but I’m sure she’s doing much better now
She is so absurdly beautiful
The fact she acknowledges that everyone gets upset with the cause of pain...she's not trying to paint him as a monster she's just explaining he caused her pain so she was frustrated with him. Sharing perspectives as gently as she did is certainly not deserved on the director's part but just shows who is an adult between the two of them
these “auteurs” who assault and traumatize actresses are not visionaries, they are sadists who have found an easy excuse to get away with abusing others. i would rather have a happy, healthy, non-abused shelly duvall than the shining.
Exactly. No entertainment is worth traumatizing and hurting the people making it.
What Kubrick did to do Duvall was horrible but calling him a sadist who was just using the production of his films as a front to abuse others is insane. Again i’m not condoning what he did but this misconception needs to be cleared up.
Trier Moment
@@bolson42but he is a sadist. Causing pain to someone on purpose the way he did for his own pleasure is sadism.
Like it or not he is a monster and only considered a good director not for merit, but for media framing him as a "genious".
@@kiriki4558 have you even watched any of his movies at all? He is not doing this for his own pleasure he is doing it to get a more realistic portrayal from the actors in order to create a better movie. Shelley Duvall has said that her and Stanley had a fine relationship outside of the filming. It astounds me that people have no prior knowledge in a subject watch a spliced up video and base their entire view of something on that. But I guess that's what you get when you spend on time on this garbage slop known as youtube shorts. Also you spelled 'genius' wrong.
She should of won an academy award for her performance
I said that about Jack Nicholson too. I wish they can recieve it now , 42 43 yrs later

She’s so ethereal and obviously an insanely talented actress
I never realized how beautiful she is. I suppose because he had her in constant misery, and pulling faces that she wouldn't be normally, or speaking normally. If Jack knew he treated her differently, then everyone else did too 😢 I saw a thing that said if someone is a bully towards someone, and nobody does anything about it, then it signals to the person, the bully, and everyone else that it's ok 😢
