- The role of a product manager is crucial but also one of the least understood ones. In this video we define the supposed role of a product manager and how he is more than a data analyst. We take up questions like, is he someone who deals with the tech aspects of product, leading the team of engineers? Or does the product manager largely concern himself/herself with user experience, design or the overall business strategy?

Intriguing isn't it? No wonder the role is difficult to understand for most. In this video, Ravijot Chugh, Co-Founder and Product Head at UpGrad, explains in detail the various responsibilities a Product Manager has, and that you need to work with the best of your calibre to be a good PM.
If you want to bag one among the thousands of highly coveted openings for Product Managers between now and 2020 (only to grow exponentially even after), you need to start upgrading your existing skills and mastering these key skills. Product Managers are often referred to as mini-CEOs of the product. This is why, at tech companies, startups and large MNCs that are now diversifying, alike, the role of Product Managers is lucrative and one of the most important in the organization.

Classic example of untested release....that background music
Hahahha 😁
Hashtag Product Management!
😂😂😂
PM Roles:
#1. Understand Market (users & competitors) from data, surveys.
#2. Build A Business Strategy
#3. Design User Experience:
- What do you want to achieve with this product/features?
- Determining user flow to achieve the 'What'. Usually from this step onwards PM will be helped by UX Designer
- Create prototype and Iterate
#4. Product Development with engineers.
#5. Product Delivery
Making sure the product is built and shipped on time and is following the vision that has been set. PM as advocate of users.
#6. Market the product.
Sell the product that has been built. What is the advantage of your product?
#7. Sustain Product Growth
Based on feedbacks received.
if i were a ui ux designer, i'd know my shit better than a prod manager. if i were a full stacker, i'd know better than the prod manager.
@@Omkar3324 a product manager is not there only for tech companies, even a pack of biscuits has a product management team at the back
@@devendragaur4659 ya it would make sense if they had experience in the manufacturing line up- all total from the ground up. rather than ones who get in- with a prod manager online or offline mba course, who don't know stuff about the product. Cadbury's watchman understands the machinery and marketing tactics better than its new MBA staff. nothing is new here.
Excellent description of the role and responsibilities of a Product Manager. I really like how he finishes the video by saying “All of this and no one reports to you”. Well said!
I am not a product manger but I have had lots of involvement with Product Manager at my work. Really good video thank you for your time explaining it. I will follow other videos also.
Good info... background music sucks tho
I agree, music was not needed here.
That was amazing and full proof description. Thanks for this video!
For sure I'll be doing product management course.. From upgrad...
Music is unnecessary
Hi Ryan, Thank you for your feedback. It will be shared with the relevant team.
Helpful video, thanks!
However I didn't really agree with the fairly sweeping generalisations about what the engineers will want to do, or assuming that you will build a culture where whipping them into delivering late at night is a good or acceptable thing - we should ensure that the planning is good enough to prevent that from happening.
However - I appreciate your publishing this, glad I watched it!
Fantastic Sir, very well explained to make us understand.
Always wanted to know what they do. Very explanatory!
Very good presentation. Nice, simple and to the point. Good job.
Thank you! Your presentation is great!
only video which is covering everything! thanks
Nice video. Although a very important part of a PMs job is also to sustain and maintain the product. Enhancements to existing product features are also extremely important. And on the developer’s front, I believe the estimates come from them, and therefore if the PM needs to serve them coffee 4 days in a row, then the estimation & planning were crippled in the first place.
Thanks for sharing your opinion about the Product Management role.
Excellent. Thank you.
Love your informative video!
This was so helpful!!
thank You Sir!!
Ravi you already have good stuff to tell, you really don't need music
Thanks..very well explained
This was great, but the music in the background was too distracting at times.
Henry Ranola very distracting music
Thanks a lot 🤝
Thankyou sir ❤️
Great insights! How will this change in an agile environment?
Background music sucks. Just the speech alone is good enough. This video should have been Product tested (Beta).
Good vid. Straight to the point and clear.
Hi Kel, Glad you liked the video. Happy Learning!
Very concise and informative !
Awesome
@Ravijot - The video is quite informative. But the background music is too distracting
Good one . Good job Ravi .
very well explained
These are the roles of product designers
Thanks Ravi for the info. Very well explained.
no it's more on a business side
great body language
which font you are using bro
we have to differ a bit more in my opinion. A PM in engineering manufracturing is different from a PM in a software-company.
Can an anthropologist become a good product manager?
Great
Nice video, thanks ! :)
Do you have a toolbox for PMs?
Hey why don't you check out cohortplus.com. They're one of the largest communities for Product Management professionals, and they recently launched a feature called Product Manager Toolkit which is a compiled and curated list of PM interview questions, case studies, posts and books.
Can you please make a vedio on how to start a begginer if they wants to learn the product development skill??

Educational video+temple run game music 😂....not tested product before launching
thanks

brilliant!
We are so glad you liked it!
But in CSPO training it was taught that in Agile environment there is no role called Product Manager. Product Owner is the ultimate decider of the product. So how do you answer this?
If you want to understand how businesses work and great products are built, go with AIPMM - CPM. Agile CSPO is more on the execution side and not ideation. And to answer your question, PO is not the ultimate "decider" he is an "executioner" in the team, works with scrum master and scrum team and helps the PM build the backlog (and groom it). Ideation is done by PMs. POs typically report to Product Managers.
PS: I am a PO and hence I know what I am talking about. I report to a Sr. PM for my product.
"Product Owner is the role. Product Manager is the job"
PS: boi thank me later
Great video!
can an introverted person become a product manager given
there are lot of meetings and you ought to talk in those? :p
Ofcourse yes - czcams.com/channels/EToNFmaojElJN0t0bDFWjA.html
Hello Sir, I am UX designer in a product company and I really want to go with product management can you suggest me online courses and tips please I have 4-year exp in UX designing.
UX designer is a 'designer'(very small part of complete "PRODUCT"), product manager does 'management'(OF THE WHOLE PRODUCT from idea/inception phase to the maintenance phase, full life cycle of product BUT DESIGNER ONLY WORKS IN ONE OF THOSE PHASES THEN BYE-BYE). Totally different domains. I suggest talk to your product manager(PM) when you work on a project then slowly learn the requirements of the job. Then you will know if you really wanna transition into this domain.

From a PM perspective, what would implementation of a password reset functionality look like please?
Hey, that's a wonderful question. Why don't you post it on cohortplus.com, which is an online community of and for Product Management professionals. I have got a lot of my PM questions answered on CohortPlus, and I'm sure you'll get a great answer there as well.

Agreed
i am in IT sales, but no software development or technical background, do you think i can become a product manager in my second career stint
ruchi jain yes you can. You don’t need a technical background to become a PM necessarily. I’m going to make a video about this soon!

Music is terrible mate, good vid tho
Is sales also part of product management? Is he expected to achieve certain sales revenue target?
James no! Sales is the goal of the sales team or sales manager but Product manager works in tandem with the sales manager and sales team to achieve this goal.
Very good video, but the background music is completely unnecessary and at some point it even became annoying
Thanks for your feedback, we will consider it.
It's important to be an engineer to do product management?????
Hi Suman, to be eligible for a Product Management program the applicant must hold a Bachelor's Degree and No minimum % required. To know more please visit the link bit.ly/2LU4ZRq or reach us at 18002102020, our career experts will be happy to assist you with your query. Thank you.
It depends on the product you are trying to build , ship and market. There is no specific answer. If you really want to become a PM speak to someone in your circle avoid online courses they encourage rote learning.
Nope - any person from any eduational background can become a PM - czcams.com/channels/EToNFmaojElJN0t0bDFWjA.html
When you use the word PM for the product manager, you have already created confusion and turned the product manager into a project manager. #beconscious
Hi Miguel, thanks for your feedback. However, the video is about Product Management and PM is abbreviated after mentioning it for Project Management, so we assume there should be no confusion. Still, we will consider it.
There is still enough confusion about product managers, like you as the founder or Steve Jobs or Elon Musk, which focuses on semantics. www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6682687777399726080?commentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Acomment%3A%28activity%3A6682687777399726080%2C6682890305592713216%29
You came to watch a video titled “PRODUCT MANAGER” ,why on earth will you be lost when you see “PM” in this particular context. #BeReasonable

It's good to know coding - but not a needed skill - czcams.com/channels/EToNFmaojElJN0t0bDFWjA.html
Product Mgr is responsible for the Why. The scrum team is responsible for the How. PM must define the product vision, features, roadmap, customer journey and user experience; but must rely on others to execute their vision. PM's have "all the responsibility and none of the authority"
Please remove the irritating background music,It makes viewer harder to listen with concentration on what you speaking in video
That background music is super annoying
the background music is distracting
They do nothing
Hi, we don't want our learners to have such experience. Please write your concern in detail at customercare@upgrad.com to look into it on priority. Thank you.

Lot of unwanted hand movements.

Very annoying accent !
