  • In Yu-Gi-Oh, a Pendulum Monster is a Monster card which can be summoned out to the field and used as a Monster, or alternatively, can be set in the Pendulum Scale, gaining properties similar to that of a Continuous Spell card, while also providing its user with the ability to perform a Pendulum Summon.
    And while set in the scale, you gain access to a Pendulum Monster’s Pendulum Effects rather than its Monster Effects.
    In this video we’re going to look at the Worst Pendulum effects in the game, why they’re so detrimental and why they should be avoided when setting up for a Pendulum Summon.

      Well to be fair that effect only applies if you control no monsters. Otherwise it's still a fixed scale.
      Honestly I think Konami consciously dropped the concept some time during MR3 when it became clear people really didn't enjoy their opponent being to recover 5 cards of material every turn from what's basically any 2 continuous backrow which also had effects triggered on destruction. The ability for a pendulum to have the option of 2 unconditional scales would make it extremely versatile which is not what people wanted to see more of at the time.

    I'm a Qliphort player since they first came out, I can tell ya that placing Disk or Stealth isn't really that much of a detriment since Scout (and all other Qli pendulum monsters) already restrict you in only SS'ing Qli monsters, and because of how Qli are played, they aren't 100% reliant on their pendulum summoning when there's stuff like Laser Qlip to have 2 normal summons of Qli monsters, and has enough consistency and tools to deal with problematic stuff without the need to access Extra Deck cards outside of their archetype. Either way, you rarely place Disk and Stealth in the pendulum zone, only when you REALLY need to complete the scale and can't get to Monolith or Performapal Trampolynx (which again, rarely happens).

    With Performapal Five-Rainbow Magician you could have mentioned that Denko Sekka can prevent your opponent from setting spells and traps if you have no set backrow cards yourself.
    But you can set a card during your own turn, do your plays and then activate or destroy the set card before ending your turn to prevent your opponent from setting.
    It's pretty gimmicky and not very reliable but it can work if you can protect Denko Sekka and the pendulum spell.

    I think the worst pendulum monsters in the game are the Crystal Beast ones. They just had to give CB's the only type of support that actively messes with their gimmick of being able to be sent to the S/T zone for effects later on. Instead of some kind of Synchro/XYZ/Link support with a OPT to put a CB from the grave to the S/T zone and a OPT to send a CB from S/T to the grave for a good effect.

      @archwing3441 Před 2 lety +5

      This is absolutely true. Pendulums didn't really catch on until entire archetypes were built around pendulums instead of just a few cards. Reason being is that it's difficult to get 2 scales to pendulum summon and the pay offs isn't as good (who cares if you can summon your entire hand. Lots of decks can already do that). I remember one of the first decks to come out at the coming of pendulums was gadget pendulums. With an entire deck of pendulums, it put a powerful recursion in the deck built in as a core mechanic.

    I’ve seen a couple Master Duel Traptrix players use Performerpal Five-Rainbow Spellian for its pendulum effect. If the opponent would prefer to use the only back row in their hand before starting their monster combo, they’re in a hard position. Also, if they set a backrow and start comboing off, the traptrix player could summon a traptrix Myrmeleo off of the effect of Sera, forcing them to set another back row or stop summoning. I don’t think it’s really good enough to warrant playing in the deck, but it’s good enough not to be on this list imo.

    2: I hate how some pend archetypes have scales all over the place it makes it a lot more difficult to set good scales, dinomists are all lv 4 and 5 so the scales are all 3 or 6, qlis are all scale 1 or 9, but DDDs and solfachords have basically any scales between 1 and 8 so they must suplement with a link monster or a spell to cheat out scales.

D/D/Ds have much better scale cards with better effects that are both reliable and have good effects so this would be my pick.
    Still a good list though. Would like to see a list with D/D/Ds on a positive list :)

    there are exactly 5 main deck monsters with level 11 or 12: 2 cardians who can special summon themselves, 2 subterrors ( too hard to have no face-up monsters there 😏) and nibiru, the hand trap. What common those 5 have? none are dragons, meaning gate infinity and revolution dragon have absolute no reason of existence, other than z-arc. Even extra deck pendulums mostly are 8, with the few exceptions are assosiated to their archetype.

    Top 10 single cards/small archetypes (1~3 extra related cards) that grew into full archetypes. I am not talking about archetypes that are just based around a core card like Invoked or a boss monster like Eldlich, but I am instead referring to archetypes similar to Cyber Dragon or Harpie Lady that had the original monster and maybe a few related cards, but later received more substantial support in the form of retrains/remakes/offshoots of the original.
    For example:
    Cyber Dragon (plus Cyber Twin, Cyber End, and Chimeratech Overdragon)
    Thunder Dragon
    BLS
    Dark Magician
    Dark Magician Girl
    Red-Eyes
    Blue-Eyes White Dragon (plus Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon)

    I’ll take Flash Knight over Trump Girl. Good scale, good level and has the benefits of being a LIGHT, Normal Warrior.
    Qli was initially a tribute focused deck and thus wasn’t hurt by the restriction until they introduced Master Rule 4 and I wouldn’t be surprised if their link was intentionally a late arrival.
    Metrognome is clearly meant to work with itself more as a continuous spell given its monster effect. It probably would be better if more cards had a beneficial interaction with it.
    Swincobra is something that I expected to be in the ten spot because it’s effect is good, but extremely slow and unfortunately too many decks use GY effects these days. It’s one of those cards clearly made for a starter deck, which is what it was released in, and not meant to be used at higher levels of play. That’s something that I feel a lot of competitive people forget about yugioh. Just because it isn’t tournament viable doesn’t mean the card is bad. It’s just meant for newer players to be a scale 2 with a somewhat useful effect against other new players.
    Trump Panda has a good effect, but it is so slow even if you combine it with Soul Pendulum, another card that can manipulate scales.
    Timegazer Magician legitimately upsets me. Super Starter Space-Time Showdown was supposed to be the introduction to Pendulum summoning, but the deck is just so counterproductive for it. The deck can’t search it, usually has monsters out when you do end up drawing it and just has no real way to recover if you need to wipe your field first. I do use it in Duel Links, but that’s really it.
    That raccoon feels like it was overly restricted because they realized how useful it would be otherwise.
    Infinity is basically just meant to get out Z-Arc and that’s it. It lacks any utility outside of a specific use and it says something when it isn’t used with the rest of the archetype.
    I don’t get Five-Rainbow Magician. It just isn’t very helpful unless you’re facing decks like pure Superheavy Samurai. It’s less of a Pendulum monster and more of a continuous spell.
    I love Pandora’s Jewelry Box, but even decks that don’t use the extra deck won’t use it as a niche counter. Anchamoufrite is more useful as it can help you draw a card and then be used as tribute fodder without you needing to actually worry about any cards that need you to have an empty extra deck.

    • @benhwa101
      @benhwa101 Před 2 lety +1

      Five-Rainbow Magician is (obviously) an anime card and it’s anime effect is meant to purely work only with Action Cards, the anime only gimmick (which ruins most of the duels in the anime).
      So Konami might had a hard time redesigning the card until one of the designers said “f**k it” and put on a niche effect that would eventually get ruined by Master Rule 4

  • @jvsonic2468
    @jvsonic2468 Před 2 lety

    Metrognome copy the Scale of Supreme Gate Infinity or Five-Rainbow Magician, then pop the other card to allow a low scale. For Swingcobra, it messes with top decking, so your opponent may not be able to get card they need to get out of any bad situation or is dependent on having graveyard utility which Konami tries making archetypes with them less heavy in current design.

    I have to dissagree with Supreme King Gates. I run a deck that I call it The Supreme King Dragons, basically Odd-Eyes as engine but heavily utilizes the Supreme King Gates to start combo.
    Why did I choose Supreme King Gates over Sky Iris? Becoz it is a lot more reliable since it allows me to summon a pendulum monster from extra deck while letting me start Arc Pendulum combo which resolves in 1 free scale ( usually Venemy Dragon since it has the best low scale effect ) and a search for Dissolver from the deck. If you chain it correctly you prevent the opponent from ashing your special summon by activating Arc Pendulum effect first then placing the scale back on the scale, and 1 Dissolver on the field to bring out Vortex Dragon. So the end goal of my deck is to setup Wing Dragon as high scale while Venemy as low scale. And once it is setup properly, it is practically immune during battle phase.
