    I always imagined a Pikeru archetype would have been interesting seeing how she's on quite a few other cards and I feel she's a classic next to Ebon magician.

      2,000ATK was way too low. 2,200ATK-2,800ATK might have made them viable.

    What’s funnier with Pumpking and Castle of Dark Illusions is that, while meant to synergies in the TCG, have never been used in the same duel in the anime. Pumpking was used by Bonz against Joey, and the Castle was used by PaniK. Pumpking also increased the attack of *other* Zombie monsters in the anime, which would’ve made it better if it was also implemented in TCG, but still not enough to see a lot of play.

      @@archwing3441 My guess is they felt they needed to give them some effect since there was no way they could use their anime effects without being too overpowered back then (Castle preventing your opponent from attacking your monsters, while Pumpkin King of Ghosts special summoned all your zombie monsters from the graveyard and made them immune to battle damage). I guess they figured since they were both used by creepy duelists they could just make their effects related.
      Funny thing is, much like Gate Guardian, you could give Castle of Dark Illusions its anime effect (essentially a monster version of swords of revealing light) and it still wouldn't be too overpowered in the modern Yugioh. Pumpkin, now that's the opposite. Not so much for the battle immunity as it would have been in the past but for the ability to special summon so many monsters from the graveyard (unless it had some sort of restriction to prevent them from being used as material for extra deck summons).

      I had come up with _this_ as an improvement to their in-game effects, but now I’ll have to research the anime effects:
      _Pumpking The King Of ghosts_ (DARK)
      Level 6
      Zombie/tuner/effect
      _When 1 or more level/rank 4 fiend monsters is on the field you can special summon this card from your hand or GY (Quick effect). Zombie and fiend monsters you control gain 100 ATK/DEF during each phase. As long as a level/rank 4 fiend monster is on the field zombie and fiend monsters you control cannot be destroyed by battle or card effect each once per turn When this card is destroyed by your opponent you can set 1 zombie or Flip Monster facedown from your hand or GY onto the field.._
      ATK/2300 DEF/2500
      _Castle of dark illusions_ (DARK)
      Level 4
      Fiend/effect
      _You can special summon this card from your hand or GY when you control 1 or more level/rank 6 Zombie monsters on the field (quick effect). All all zombie/fiend monsters you control gain 100 ATK/DEF during each phase while this card is face up on the field. While you control a level/rank 6 or above zombie monster, zombie and fiend monsters you control cannot be destroyed by battle or card effect. When this card is destroyed by your opponent you can set 1 fiend or flip monster from your hand or GY facedown on the field._

      @@DukeSkylocker If we are talking about old school dueling? A lot of cards weren't banned. Pumpkin and Castle could easily get Raigeki, Dark Hole or get hit with the classic Fissure. Or even get Snatch Steal, Change of Heart or something.

      To be fair, it's a normal spell for a reason. If it was a quickplay, it could be activated without having been set on a previous turn!

      Spell card
      _Change the battle positions of all Attack Position monsters on the field to Defense Position and vice-versa. Monsters that don’t change battle position from this effect have their ATK/DEF reduced to 0. These positions cannot be changed during the turn this card is activated except by the effect of a Spell, Trap or Effect Monster Card. Fiend monsters you control gain piercing battle damage and can attack from defense position until the end of your next turn (using either their ATK or DEF, whichever is highest). You can also activate this card during either players Standby Phase._
      THERE, I turned the standby quirk into an advantage by being able to use it there _on top_ of normally, made it so monsters that cannot or are prevented from from changing position (like link monsters) have their stats dropped to 0, and made it so Fiend monsters you control can take full advantage of the situation and be able to attack with piercing damage no matter what.

    Now there's two archtypes I'd love to see get revamps in the modern era: Castle of Dark Illusions, and Pikeru/Curran. Pikeru and Curren could even work together and generate effects based on the difference in life points between the two players. Of course, I'm still waiting for my Gate Guardian retrains.

      Frankly, I see Gate Guardian support made in a similar manner to Golden Castle series where the cards needs to mention "Labyrinth Wall".

    Trial of the princesses should of been (in my opinion) a ritual spell
    Princess Pikeru and Princess Curran are the ritual monsters (now level 2) and their smaller magician if used as tribute could allow you to pull them from the deck
    Far less complicated and can use generic ritual support

    Ebon Magician Curran and her princess form are some of my favorite looking cards, same with Pikeru. But, that is based on looks only, I tend to like cute monster cards. But, even I would not really want to use them in a deck (much less against a modern deck), as they are extremely hard to use and to pull off their trials. Always made me sad, such a fun set of cards.

    I've always had a soft spot for the "chess" archfiends it's just unfortunate that they never really got good enough support. It was cool that Summoned Skull had a retrain (Skull Archfiend of Lightning) that had the same effects as the "chess" archfiends particularly the die-roll negate effect.

      Continuous spell
      _Whenever either player would roll a die or flip a coin for a card effect you may special summon an “archfiend” monster that mentions “coin” or “die” in its text from your hand, Extra Deck or GY. When any number of coins are flipped for an effect you may choice of of the following effects for each coin flipped ⚫️Gain 1000 LP ⚫️Increase the ATK/DEF of a monster on the field by 500. Once per turn, When any number of die would be rolled for an effect, you may special summon a monster from your hand or GY who’s level/rank is less then or equal to the result of the roll._

      Fiend-type "Archfiend" monsters you control are unaffected by your opponent's card effects that do not target them. Once per turn, you can activate one of the following effects:
      -If "Pandemonium" is face up on the field, you can special summon 1 fiend-type "Archfiend" monster from your deck or GY that has an dice roll effect. It gains 1000 atk, but destroy it at the end phase.
      -(Quick effect) If an "Archfiend" monster you control would roll a die, you can declare 1 number and pay 300 LP times the declared number and if you do, treat the result of the roll as the declared number.

      That would certainly breath new life into them. You’d be able to bring them out easier or make their effects more reliable, and it’d be topped of with some potent protections for them. The meta likes _non-_ targeting effects, so this would force them away from that to deal with your archfiends. Although instead of being destroyed after being cheated out of the deck, might I also suggest it returns to your hand or deck?

    "Curse of Fiend" is one of the wierdest cards out there.
    It has a lot of restrictions and for some reason only harms you.
    It might have had some uses back when it came out if it could be used during EITHER player's turn, as in the early days, changing positions was something people did.

    Curse of Fiend could have a very small use in Zombie decks if it activates after Doomking Balerdroch's effect. It still wouldn't be worth running unless you had absolutely nothing else to put in a deck in Master Duel to reach 60 cards for That Grass Looks Greener, but a very small niche use is better than nothing at all

    Return zombie is made to counter yata lock back then since your draw phase will be skipped and this card is in your GY due to chaos emperor dragon effect

    I can think of situations where Senri Eye is somewhat useful (e.g. against empty-hand decks like Infernity, so you practically know your opponent's entire hand), but Germ Infection is literally just laughably terrible

      I can fix germ infection:
      _Virus Infection_
      Equip Spell Card
      _The ATK/DEF of a non-machine monster equipped with this card is decreased by 300 during each phase. When that monster’s ATK or DEF is 0 (quick effect), the owner of that monster must send that card to the GY. When the monster this card is equipped to is removed from the field (quick effect) you can equip this card onto another monster on the field. Once per turn (quick effect) while this card is face up on the field you can add 1 “Virus” or “Germ” card from your deck or GY to your hand._

      Because all things disease related have been all the rage since late 2019. Plus it lets me bring out the OG “Germ Infection”. I like retrains that’s make the card they’re retraining useful, like monsters that treat their name as the original they’re based off of.
      Something like _these,_ some divine dragon retrains I brainstormed after a duel logs list about the worst dragons:
      _Divine Dragon - Excelion The Exaulted_ (LIGHT)
      Level 7
      Wyrm/Tuner/Effect
      _This cards name also counts as “Divine Dragon - Excelion” while in your hand, field or GY. You can special summon this card (from your hand, deck or GY) be tributing 1 or more “Divine Dragon” monsters from your hand and/or field. When this card is Summoned, it gains 1000 ATK for every "Divine Dragon” monster(s) in your Graveyard when this effect resolves. When this card destroys a monster by battle and sends it to the Graveyard, inflict damage to your opponent equal to the ATK of the destroyed monster. If this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle, it can attack once again in a row._
      ATK/2500 DEF/1400
      _Divine Dragon- Ragnarok The Exaulted_ (LIGHT)
      Level 4
      Pendulum effect: _Facedown cards you control cannot be destroyed by card effect while this card is face up on the field. When your opponent would add or remove a card from their hand or field by card effect, place 1 spell counter on a card you control. Once per turn, you can spend all the existing spell counters on a card you control, and activate one of the following effects. You can then special summon this card from your pendulum zone after this effect resolves:⚫️Special Summon 1 Dragon, sea serpent or Wyrm Monster from your hand or GY who’s levels equal or less then the number of spell counters used. (You can only special summon once after this effect this turn, except “Divine Dragon” monsters).⚫️Gain LP equal to the number of spell counters used X500. ⚫️ 1 monster on the field gains or loses ATK and/or DEF (your choice) based off the number of counters used X300._
      Pendulum Scale:0

      I mean it’s not like it’s even a foreign thing in Yu-Gi-Oh anyway. There are already entire archetypes that revolve around older cards by treating their name as them. Harpy ladies, Skull Servants/wights, and cyber dragons to name a batch of them. And beyond that archetypes have gone on to bleed into each other before or even branch out into multiple sub archetypes. The Archfiend and chaos archetype’s probably the biggest one of theses. So I don’t think having a card that references “Virus” and “Germ” cards isn’t _That_ out of place, especially when germs aren’t really an archetype of their own to begin with. As far as I can tell only “Germ Infection” and “Giant Germ” are germ cards anyway, so it’s just a little harmless seasoning for a card in need of a tasty buff.

    I've always despised what they decided to do with Pumpking and Castle of Dark Illusions. The combo effect was supposed to reflect Pumpking's anime effect but they decided to tie it to Castle... a card which was used by a completely different person and has no relation to zombies. They both really deserve retrains to reflect their actual anime effects (Castle would probably have to be something like the controller of it gets to manage effect/attack targets directed towards your monsters or an effect to flip all your other monsters face-down and shuffle them).

      @@ButFirstHeLitItOnFire but why would they both affect zombies and fiends? Pumpkin's effect should be exclusively for zombies and Castle's effect should be exclusively for fiends since the duelists (Bonz and PaniK) that used those cards exclusively used one type or the other, not both. The only reason to have either one affect both types would be if they were used by Bakura in his Occult deck.
      Castle of Dark Illusions's effect is a direct copy of Pumpking's anime effect and they only have the 4 turn limit on the increase likely to reflect how long the duel between Joey and Bonz lasted. For a retrained Pumpking they'd just need to do away with anything related to Castle of Dark Illusions and have him continuously give all zombies on your field 300 ATK/DEF every standby phase (the combined amount of the 2 effects). Then to sweeten his usage in modern YGO give him some additional effects to synergize with Zombie World (since it's the closest card with have to anime Call of the Haunted).
      Castle of Dark Illusions's anime effect made it so all of PaniK's monster were "hidden in darkness" meaning Yugi was unable to see what PaniK's monsters were and was only able to see though the darkness with Swords of Revealing Light. Since Swords of Revealing Light has the effect to flip all the opponent's monsters face-up one can conclude that being "hidden in darkness" just meant they were always face-down.

      I was just playing into what the cards already are in the actual game and giving people worthwhile reasons to play both. The retrains I had in mind are basically saying and proving “Anything you can do I can do better” to the original playable cards. You can special summon one with the other, and they have overlapping and stacking effects, redundant protections for each other and alike cards. Plus my take on Pumpking is a tuner while my castle isn’t, so you can do Synchro plays with the two cards, and their ATK/DEF boost happening _every_ single phase builds up quickly over time, while being so small makes it a waste to thwart the tiny but constant stat boost with card effects.
      They may seem a little copy and pasty, but I wanted to take the original garbage effects and intent and make them into something more viable without replacing them wholesale.

      Lore:
      If you control "Zombie World", you can normal summon this card without tributing. You can only control 1 "Pumpking, Spectral King of Ghosts". While you control another Zombie type monster, this card cannot be destroyed by card effects, also, if "Zombie World" is face up on the field, it gains the following effects. You can only use each effect once per turn:
      - If a zombie-type monster(s) you control is destroyed by battle or card effect: You can special summon those monster (s) from the GY and if you do, it gains 500 atk.
      -All Zombie type monsters you control gain 500 atk (this increase remains even if this card leaves the field). During each standby phase: You can make all Zombie-type monsters you control gain 1000 atk until the end phase.
      Castle of Darkness Illusions
      Dark Attribute Fiend/Effect.
      Level: 4, ATK/1000 DEF/2000
      Lore:
      If you normal/special summon a Fiend-type monster, you can special summon this card from your hand in DEF position. While you control another Fiend-type monster, your opponent cannot target this card for attacks or effects. You choose the attack targets for your opponent's attacks, also all monsters you control must attack, if able. During the end phase, if all monsters you control are in DEF position: Destroy this card. If this card is destroyed by card effect: Destroy all defense position monsters you control

    The Malice Ascendant strategy to deckout your opponent, I must say I tried it sometime in the past, specially in YGO video games :p
    But time later I also used a more consisten and faster strategy using the Soul-Absorbing Tower along with Zombie World.
    You could also name Don Zaloog on the cards that mills easier.

    It's funny how unplayable Trial of the Princess decks are, considering Pikeru and Curan are monsters Konami really enjoys printing on generic cards. Those two are some of the few monsters that I would legitimately attribute yugioh mascot status to.

      Ignoring the duellogs banlist, Definitely some Knightmares make a spot, Accesscode too, I think an honorary/low spot for Firewall (cuz errata), and Appolousa is also a easy mention. I think Saryuja skull dread is a decent one since you could link climb a scapegoat into it, and last of my thoughts is maybe linkuriboh and the generic salamangreat link (forgot the name)

    Princess Pikeru / Curran have some of the worst summoning requirements in existence
    The sheer audacity of requiring you to beat over a level 5 or higher monster by equipping a shitty equip spell to a very weak monster is something.
    I have no idea what Konami was thinking when they made these monsters, even my 12 year old self thought the cards sucked total ass because they are impossible to bring out.

      It's one of those cases where a Card(-Effect) pretty much exists for Lore, rather than actual Gameplay. Beating over a 5-Star is the Trial that the Card is named for, so it being difficult to pull of makes sense in that context, it IS a Trial after all. What I personally find even worse though is that your Reward for pulling it off is...pretty much just Pikeru / Curran getting their Effect upgraded, since their Princess Forms have the exact same Stats as their Magician Forms with TotP equipped.

    I think cards such as germ infection exist solely for the sake of anime. I don't know if it was used during the anime or not, but it seems to be the perfect card a bad guy would play for the sake of suspense and rising stakes during an anime duel.

      No not really.
      The card has no anime apperence. Not even cameo or just there and not used.
      The card was printed in OCG Volume 7 January 27 2000. It's obviously pack filler.
      OCG 1999 already had Raigeki Dark Hole Trap Hole and even Pre-Errata Crudh Card Virus.

    Well, maybe Patrol Robo will see some play one day when there is a viable deck around level 3 Machine monsters that can go into higher level Synchro plays and it needs a level 3 non tuner. It's not like there is much normal monster level 3 support, so having no normal monster support isn't a huge strike against it. Not too many decks like level 3 monsters, but we might get one in the future. Or maybe they'll release an archetype that has 3 level 3 monster with good effects, but then decks find that they really need 10 or 11 level 3 machine monsters for consistency and just plop in Patro Robo since 9 isn't enough. Yeah it's kind of funny how this card's best hope for the future has nothing to do with its effect but the fact that there is an unoccupied niche for its level that might one day be filled. So many level 4 stuff around

    Can't remember what it's called since it's been years, but there's an old-ish trap card that flips the opponent's top card and summons it to your side of the field if it's a monster (if it's a spell/trap they get to keep it in their hand instead). That's one of the few things I can think Senri Eye might be useful for, but there are far better ways to see the top of your opponent's deck, like Convulsion of Nature.

    Imagine if more non-archetype cards were designed to *punish* their removal, only having any effect whatsoever if your opponent took it off the field and otherwise basically not having any sort of effect beyond that.
    Maybe even a card series that is all cards that have some huge effect if the opponent unfields it while the card is face down, whether by bounce or destruction or banish or elsewise, but if that doesn't happen then it's a dead card.

    Basically you need another equip spell on White Magician Pikeru along with Trial of the Princesses in order to attack over a level 5 or higher monster to then special summon Princess Pikeru
    afterwards which is basically a lot of work and a waste of time to even pull off.
    For another worst Top 10 how about Top 10 Worst Floating effects?

    Honestly, the worst Standby Phase-cards are the ones with effects that only trigger during YOUR OWN SP, which is mostly Nephthys. For one thing, you’re just sitting there until the next SP. The other problem are tag duels. If you have a deck that relies on your own SP, it’s useless during the partner’s turn, because the game switches to his deck and hand.

    I found a one that's pretty bad. Darklord Marie, a Level 5 dark fiend monster with the effect: Once per turn, during your standby phase you gain 200 LP. This must be in your graveyard to activate and to resolve this effect

    Hm, I think I did use Germ Infection in that old Kaiba PC game ("Yu-Gi-Oh!: Power of Chaos - Kaiba the Revenge") at least until I got some better removals in that game.
    I had fun with that game at the time, but objectively it was so far worse than the GBA YugiOh games at the time it was downright insulting.

      The power of chaos games were cool because they started you with bad cards and you slowly worked your way up to building a decent deck. Although the joey one already started you off with a MST and strong beaters, so that was not even that much. The yugi starter deck was pure trash, your best options were to try to fuse metal dragon or use twin-pronged attack to 3-for-1 against an enemy monster you wouldn't be able to destroy otherwise

      @@sirswagabadha4896 True enough. As I said I had fun. And these games at least made me feel like I actually played Yugi/Kaiba, using the actual voice actors and all.
      However, didn't all the old Yugioh games start you at a pretty bad deck you had to improve over time?
      And just looking at the numbers: PoC Kaiba was released at about the same time as the GBA game Yugioh World Championship 2004. PoC Yugi and Kaiba together had a total of 466 cards and the two characters, playing maybe 6 decks each (could not find the numbers, but definitely more than one); WC04, however, had a total of 1138 cards and 28 decks to play against. In both numbers about double the options. (Yes, I looked those numbers up) Even if we add the PoC Joey game we are still 1/3 less cards than WC04.
      And that is what I meant. You had to buy 3 games to even compete with the one GBA game in variety, and it took until Joey until they introduced a PvP game mode to play against your friends.
