This game has a really cool dichotomy going on with Duke being this epic macho guy but the levels and music often having this serious and sometimes dark tone. Like the situation is so intensely grim for humanity that only someone larger then life like Duke can save it. One of the many things missing from DNF, or really any of the games after this one.
right? the tone was so lame in dnf. they should have ripped hl2 mood too. duke dropped in a doomed dystopia with a serious mood would have been a much better fit.
Spot on, I feel. I was literally just chatting to my brother about this earlier today. Duke is this, as you say: 'Larger than life' character, often making light of him being the only thing that can save humanity - kind of guy. Then you get music like this, which in my opinion, is either extremely meloncholic, or simply just... desperate? Humanity is on the way out. Only Duke can save it. Yet it conveys this beautiful image that this threat is somehow real. Insane. 'Time to be a king among Men - Come Get Some!' .... 'Ugnh ugnh.... WHERE IS IT!?'
100% agreed. this ost/level always stuck in my head playing it when I was like 6/7 on god mode 😅. scared the shit out of me but it was sooo good back then
@@petercolivetyeah, whenever I played, the music always gave me an unsettling vibe, coupled with the sounds of pig cops roaming around just out of sight
I'm picturing Duke sitting in a large oxygen dome on the surface of the moon, with stiff martini, looking up at the earth and thinking "Don't worry, Duke's coming back for you."
Toxic Touch, Leviathan, The Outer Darkness, The Singing Void... what's funny is how it goes well with techbase levels, hell fortress levels, gorescape levels, and even the abstract ones without any cohesion.
@Vladislav I'm guessing the idea that this corporation claims Duke Nukem as theirs, Maybe that Randy Pitchford's name got attached to it. When, *don't worry guys!* Gearbox was basically the Duke Nukem guys splitting off of 3DRealms. And Pitchford was involved with Duke Nukem back in the 90's as well. Got credit for one level as well. -yeah I know the drama- BTW, Playing his level with developer commentary is priceless and probably the reason he's absent for that one.
It's surprisingly profound to hear this peaceful but kinda sombre track all the way at the end of the episode, after tracks like Robo Creeping and Aliens Say Your Prayers.

The way the OST goes from "Aliens, Say Your Prayers" to this song is amazing

the hardest and most beautiful custom doom maps use this midi and it's epic as hell

Reading this felt like a knife through my chest

This mission really sheds light on what the hell's going on.
I think Dark Side is one of the best levels in the game, Atomic Edition included.
I always file my taxes to this song. Every year.
I'm here to listen to plasma and do taxes and I'm all out of taxes.
It must be a very forlorn experience doing taxes to this.
@@Klausinator451 In Duke's voice XD
I think I'm gonna start doing it too!
Episode 2, Level 8: Dark Side theme.
Fun fact: Early version of this music was upbeat and faster.
Map 10: Toxic Touch
I knew this song from alien vendetta, and I'd never guess it originated from duke 3d
Map 18: The Singing Void
this map is so beautiful
Map 30: Leviathan
my fave dn3d song with gotham
got this on backdrop while duke modding
Best music for Doom not in original Doom imo
Toxic touch alien vendetta
