- When it comes to pedals, Look Keo "Compatible" isn't an exact standard you can rely on for compatibility across all pedals and cleat, even when they claim to be "Look Keo Compatible". Bike fitters know this all too well already. It's a common question that comes up on forums when people are experiencing issues with their Look Keo "Compatible" power meter pedals.

Received my Assioma Duos yesterday and have used Look Keo cleats for years. Decided to watch your videos on the Assiomas before installing today and I see this video was posted yesterday. Nice timing! Quickly becoming a huge fan of this channel.

Thanks Shane! I just got a pair of Assioma Duos and I didn’t know that they came with Wellgo RC7 cleats. Now I know what cleats I should buy as a back up. However, I had some poor experience with their RC9 SPD-SL cleats before, the rubber part worn out in literally 2 days under very short walking distance. The genuine Shimano cleats don’t wear as quick.
Good information. My outside bike has Assiomas on it, but my trainer bike is Look Keo blades. I use Look cleats on my outside road shoes and on my trainer shoes. No problem with anything with this setup

Very good info, I've been wanting to get some pedals for my trainer bike that will be compatible with the cleats for my Assiomas.
I found the Look Keo cleat was a little funny with the Assiomas when I first installed them on my bike. I already had them installed on my shoes as I’ve always ran Look keo 2’s before buying the Assiomas. I then swapped them out for the Xpedo cleats that came with the Assiomas and as you’d expect they were great but the Xpedo cleats also worked great with the Look Keo 2 pedals and the look keo classics. Great snap in and out across all my Pedals. I think I’ll always be purchasing the Xpedo cleats, my only slight issue is getting used to the 6 degree float after being so used to the 4.5 degree float.

Had a bit of a shock at the weekend when I found I couldn't unclip either foot from my Assioma pedals. For the rest of that ride, clipping in was spot on but trying to get out would either be first time or take multiple attempts. I was wearing my winter boots, so had purchased Look Keo Grip red cleats from Merlin Cycles (one year old but not ridden that much). My summer shoes have the Xpedo cleats that came with the Assioma's and I've never had an issue with them. New Xpedo cleats came yesterday but approaching a junction and not being able to unclip focusses the mind (it also generates considerable swearing)!

An interesting note, the bolts on the Wellgo/Favero are very long compared to shimano. This has created issues with some low stack shoes I.e. s-Phyre and bonts. Princess and the pea situation...but can feel the bolts through the insole on the bonts. Replace with shimano bolts and they are sweet
I thought I would add my experience too - I have multiple sets of the first version Garmin Vectors, and a new set of Assiomas. SO I was looking for something that would work across all the pedals I have. 1) I couldn't get the Exustar red cleats to clip in to the Assiomas at all. 2) Changing to the cleats supplied with the Assiomas, these kind of work with the Vectors, but I get random releasing sometimes that is very worrying!! PITA!!
I rode Look pedals before Garmin Vectors came out. So when I decided to get Vector1’s, the cleat question was already answered, especially because I use black (zero float) cleats. I have had all four generations of the pedals, and never needed to take the supplied cleats out of the bubble wrap, since Garmin supplies 6 degree cleats.

I’ve been using the black Look Keo grip cleats with PowerTap P2 pedals since 2017 with no issues. They always clip in crisply for me and provide a bit of float.
To confirm your findings, I recently got official Look cleats and have been using them without issue with my Vector 3s. :)
Got grey Look Keo Grips for Assiomas and they worked fine. Only problem were the bolts provided. The diameter of the heads appeared to be too small. They would warp the three metal plates provided causing the bolt to not properly secure in the shoe and come lose mid-ride. Reusing old Shimano cleat bolts did the trick, though. The Favero provided cleats also seem to have bolts with a slightly larger diameter bolt head to properly secure the cleats
Great video. So in short if I am buying the assiamo Duo this week.. The red cleats that come with it are a great fit for clipping in and out?
Great vid, thanks! I would like to see you add a genuine Look Keo pedal into the mix. I have two road bikes, but only one set of Assiomas. I usually swap the pedals (the ease at which I can do this was part of the decision to go with them), but occasionally just default to a Keo pedal. My experience was the cleats that came with the Assiomas were quite insecure in the Keo pedals. I use genuine Look cleats across the board now. I'd be interested to see if your tests yielded the same results.
Can buy Xpedo pedals for the other bike. Pretty reasonably priced and they also make Assioma's pedal bodies and cleats.
I use Look keo grip cleats with my Assioma and I don’t have a problem either, but I’ve not used the ones supplied though

I think there are some caveats with this test. My 9 degree float Look Keo cleats do not clip in well at all with my Faveros. No snap at all. I may try the 6 degree and see if that is any better. Ultimately, I think the shoe can play a factor in how well a specific cleat may work or not work as well.
With me Faveros and grey Keo I had some issues in the beginning to get properly clipped in... eventually I figured out the slight heel kick to get it properly.
Hi Shane, when changing from Shimano SPD-SL cleats to Look Keo the Keo's are smaller than the SPD-SL's, so I'm not sure how to postion them correctly, are you able to offer any advice on fitting these please? I've drawn around the SPD-SLs. Thanks

I found the xpedo cleats that came with my assiomas had an incredibly snug interface that made it feel like a zero float. This caused me some knee pain but I was able to sort it out by rubbing some candle wax on the interface
Given I ordered some look keo cleats for my Garmin's yesterday to replace the ones that came with them I was nervous seeing this title, hopefully I get the same performance you did

Is your Keo cleat/pedal combo noisy? I went down the Look Keo route after being a Shimano pedal guy because of the Vector 3s on my road bike so I got Keo2Max’s for the trainer to allow for shoe cross compatibility. They have always made creaking/squeaking noises but I took them off for a service recently and dug out my old Ultegra pedals and cleats. Total silence from the pedals on the trainer now. So I am considering converting the Vectors to Shimano Rally.
I've been using Shimano SPD-SL Blue Cleats with Favero Assioma Duo for about 6 months and have never had an issue. It works better than Look cleats BTW.
Worth noting that the CRC/Wiggle home-brand "LifeLine" cleats also appear to be made by Wellgo.
It would have been interesting if the test had considered the different cleat options with a standard Look Keo pedal. I have Look Keo Max 2 & Look Keo Blade on my bikes (crank based power meter on one).
I don't have and Look Keo pedals to do further testing. Only way too many power meter pedals that are, sometimes, kinda, maybe "Keo Compatible". :)
The Xpedo cleats that came with my Assiomas fit my Look Neo Blade pedals (O/G) just fine.
The photo of the Lifeline cleats on the wiggle website show the Wellgo logo. I've just bought a pair as I've been having problems with original Look cleats and my Assioma duos.
I've been into this kind of situation in even Look cleat with Look pedal and Shimano cleat with Shimano pedals. What mine finding is: All shoes have a different curve at the contact places. if the curve didn't fit the cleat, it will happen (even look ped and cleat, Shimano ped and cleat). What I do is to use some spacer to make sure shoe curve and cleat curve fit, and all problems gone.
Power tap were selling the Wellgo cleats for £20 in the U.K. when you could buy them unbranded for £6 pretty much anywhere.
My BeProS cleats finally wore out. I tried Keo compatible ones and they simply didn't fit. I then went with original Keos and whilst they clipped in fine, the float would see them occasionally hit the pod and I had to trim a fraction off them to get the PM to read right 😐
I wish you would've covered the cheapest of them all - Decathlon's KEO compatible cleats. Been using them with the Faveros with a neat snap and no issues.
I'm hesitant to try the 'cheapest' when it comes to something that's only ~$20 in the first place. Cheap usually means poor quality materials, QA, or both. Cleats are important.

I used Look Pedals with Look Keo cleats on my Fizik and Specialized shoes. Not a problem. BUT I bought Assioma Power Meter and my Fizik shoes would not clip in. Tried my Specialized and clipped in perfectly. Both have same cleats. I had to use a small plastic placer between the cleat and the shoe (only in the back 2 screws) for it to clip in. I didn’t use the cleats Assioma sends as my float is 0%. I do prefer and love my Fizik over the Specialized.

Power reading should be the same (from the spindle). As for the efficiency of a poor pedal/cleat interface, that's another story.
I've used PowerTap for years - P1 and P2 - and a friend used Look, but it wouldn't work for me. I use Shimano Red and have never had problems. The PowerTap "specific" pedals aren't good IMO but that could be because the float is a lot, whereas I'm used to 0.
Please help, I need pedals for a different bike, but using the same cleat. Are the x-speedo cleats compatible with regular non-power meter look keo pedals?
I use the look keo with the power taps and no problems. Snaps in every time. I’ve done up the retention to be much tighter on my pedals.

In all reality I think it's time they came clean and stopped with their bullshit. Let's say they somehow manage to ship their power meter. With this track record can you imagine what returns/support will be? Sheesh!

I’m temporarily sidelined till I can get a replacement 106 shifter for my CAAD12 rim. Had a impromptu meeting with a driver who had trouble seeing a 99 kilo rider in the right of way riding a screeching yellow and slate bike with garish kit and a fluorescent helmet. Had no idea how bad it was till I dropped the bike off for its yearly major overhaul.
I have Favero Assioma pedals. Just installed original Look Keo cleats (grey) and they don't fit. They just don't clip in. I'm pretty disappointed asi I have a race tomorrow and old cleats are already worn off. :(

I have the Vector 3/Look Keo combo and (at least on the turbo), for doing max sprints I have to really tighten the pedal tension (almost to the point where it requires force to clip in) in order to not become unclipped from my pedal while sprinting. Any thoughts/tips? Out on the road if that happened, It would likely end in a crash... I've thought about purchasing new pedals (without the power meter bit) from Garmin but wondering if that's necessary.
Doesn't sound right. Those should be fine with Look Keo cleats. Have you tried going back to the Exustar cleats Garmin supply with the Vectors?

I use those cleats with my PowerTap pedals too.
BTW using Shimano Cleats with Assiomas for sometime now. Not too bad honestly, esp when all my other bikes are Shimano and walking is better with shimano cleats.

Apparently shoes make a difference to this test, I have been using some budget shimano shoes with original keo cleats with my favero assiomas for about 2 months with no probs but I just upgraded to some Fizik shoes and took the cleats off my old shoes to put them on the new ones but they wouldn’t clip in, I’ve made them work perfectly now but it involved a nail file/Emery board and the cleats are ever so slightly lighter now 🤣
I just purchased a pair of Keo. Shimano or Look, seemed like a no brainer. Surprise Look is not maker a power meter. Wonder if I can change the spindles with favero...
I had to sell my Assioma's due to the fact that the forward/backward adjustability of the Look Keo cleats is a tiny bit less than with SPD-SL cleats. Not a big thing for many perhaps, but I had too little pressure on my toe area with numb toes as a consequence. Switched to Garmin Rally RS and now all's fine again. I have not read anything about this in any review sofar.
Bike fit is highly subjective and there's a TON of variables that'll never be covered in most reviews. Any review going super-deep into these topics usually doesn't bubble to the surface anywhere. This video for example will be lucky to reach the views that make it worth my time making it in the first place. What it will do is save me time in the future linking people to when they ask about this topic.
@@gplama Yes, sure. I understand this is not covered in your or any other review. However, it was my biggest bummer after going for my first set of power pedals. Overall I loved the Assioma's but got stuck on the Look Keo cleats they can only work with. An unexpected no-go.
With Assioma, I found the Keo Grip’s are really bad. They actually snapped my pedal body. I’ve switched to the Assioma cleats and they are perfect (unsyrprisingly).
Thanks for this warning! I was just about to purchase some Keo Grips for my Assiomas Think I'll just stay with - Xpedo cleats. They seem to fit my Look Neo Blade (O/G) pedals too.
I’ve also found that the look keo cleats red version has more float than the xpedo version that comes with the Assioma. It was too much float in my opinion and switched back to the xpedo but may be something other riders would prefer.
My Experience is the original Look KEO Cleats don’t clip in as well as the Xpedo does - so for me they are no option for the FaveroAssioma ❌

Strange .. I have the Favero pedals and have used Look Keo cleats since the day I bought them with no issues with clipping in and out. Maybe it is to do with what shoe you use and any cleat distortion
Favero + Real Look Keo cleats work well (6:12 in the video). It's the Exustar cleats they don't work well with.
Likewise. I used the cleats that came with them and have since used 2 different pairs of Look KEO cleats without any issues.
I had a problem with this combo. I had to make a little extra movement in the unclipping direction to get the cleat in properly.
@@tobleramone I initially had a problem with the pedals being too hard to unclip as well (using the original cleats). I found a trick online about removing one of the springs and it has been perfect ever since.
Bought new Assiomas and went with the Look Keo Grips as shown as compatible in this video - bad mistake. They clip in nicely but very hard to clip out, even on the lowest tension. Tried the supplied Xpedo cleats and it's night and day. Not sure why my experience was so different.
Seems that different shoes cause this to happen with Look/Look style cleats.

Useful info as always. I use genuine Look Keos with a Favero spacer shim under them on my shoes and this gives a good clip in and keeps my shoe clear of the pod. The Assiomas just work and I'm really pleased with them and the clean snap in with genuine Look Keo grip cleats.
Out on a ride I always shove a set of genuine Look Keo cleat covers in a bag in my back pocket if I need to be off the bike at a cafe stop or similar. Saves wear on the cleats although as you say the cleats aren't that expensive.
When I got favero pedals I changed a few pairs from shimano to the grey look cleats and have had no issues.
Both my Garmin Vector and Rally's are more compatible with my Keo cleats than my Keo carbon's
I have no problem with my Assiomas and Keo cleats.
I'd say don't use Keo grips with Favero, the rubber pad has contact somewhere on the platform and will squeak and drive you nuts, normal Keo's work fantastic, just don't try walking anywhere with them.
My IQ2 pedals are Look compatible.

They are also totally transparent!
I originally included them in the clip-in tests.... but I chose to remove them from the video. Technically what I have are pre-production so who knows what they'll support if/when they do start shipping.

Dont like the look keos with assiomas. The rubber in the middle creates a squeeking noise when clipped in. It is much more „rubbier“ then the wellgos they dont squeek

Now answer this: So you own power pedals on 1 bike that require a certain cleat and you want to purchase some non-power pedals that will fit this same cleat. Which non-power pedals are compatible with the power pedal cleats. =D
Favero: Xpedo Thrust road pedals (they're the same pedal body)
PowerTap: Likely Xpedo as the P1/P2 shipped with RC7 cleats.
Garmin: Look Keo pedals.
@@gplama Yeah...my problem was when I was looking for a look keo pedal to fit my garmin exustar cleats. Looks like the only actually fit the bottom of the line Look pedals...they won't fit the top of the line "keo blade" series. Thanks for the vid. Shane.
What you haven’t wanted to shell out the $$$ for the exakt pedals? 🤣🤣🤣. I don’t know why they developed them at that price.
If a product works well and is popular, I’ll beg/borrow/buy it and make content here for it. If a company is confident in their product they’ll usually supply it to me for this purpose….. so….. anyway….. don’t expect to see any SRM content here any time soon. 🤣
(I’d still happily put any of their power meters through the Lama Lab Test protocol and present the results. I had a set of their SPD pedals lined up to borrow…. they broke before I had the chance)
That’s just annoying they didn’t make it exactly the same shape just adds confusion
In some places online you'll see companies side-step this by calling their cleats "Look Keo Type". They'll also only recommend the cleats they ship. It's all a bit messy.
