Garmin Rally Power Meter Review: Shimano SPD-SL/SPD/LOOK KEO

    Garmin has launched three new power meters today, all under the new ‘Garmin Rally’ brand, which supersedes the Garmin Vector power meter lineup. The Rally series includes three pedal bodies at this point: Shimano SPD-SL (road), Shimano SPD (typically off-road/MTB), and Look KEO (which they previously had).
    However, if there are two takeaways to know from this review, it’s this: The Garmin Rally series power meter is but a spindle that fits into multiple pedal platform types that you can choose from - at least, as long as those choices are Look KEO/SPD/SPD-SL. Which of course, is the vast majority of the endurance sports pedal market, save Speedplay (and Wahoo just solved that last week).
    The second thing to know is that if you already have Garmin Vector 3 pedals, then you’re also able to take advantage of this pedal portability, and switch between all of the three pedal types above - complete with an even newer battery cap design.

    My right side pedal seems to have just decided to die... Worked back and forth with Garmin and they sent me "new" refurb pedals after trying a battery circuit board replacement that still didn't fix the original dead pedal. All up and running smoothly again now with the new pedals. Garmin continuing to be great at customer support!

      Took me 5 months to warranty a faulty Assioma, every week they gave me a new set of tasks to perform. Luckily I had multiple power meters on my bike and was able to prove to them that their pedal was off using DC Rainmaker's analyzer tool and they finally sent me one but not until they confirmed that my old one was disabled. Truly appalling customer service. The replacement ones work perfectly btw, and I'm pretty sure that most people's pedals do too but I can't get behind a company that treats their customers this way because even the best products have a potential to need customer support one day so I'm getting rid of mine as soon as my Rallys arrive.

    I was burned so many times on Vector 2 and Vector 3. Think I went through three sets of Vector 3 via Garmin's support. Not a single issue with Favero Assiomas over the last 18 months. If Garmin had moved to a sealed battery compartment, I might consider Vector again in the future. As it stands with the many iterations of battery cover, seals, baby oil, etc. Not a chance.

    you mention cost toward the end - the big sell for me was the ability to use the spd on multiple bikes - I can use on my mountain and gravel set ups - you are not locked into a crank-based meter - I race/ride gravel - cx - and mtb - and can use these pedals on all three - to upgrade all those bikes to power using crank-based would surely be more -

    This product Rally™ XC Conversion Kit for 249.99 contains pedal bodies only, spindles and electronics are not included. I need a power meter for an indoor bike. This is my first time buying a power meter so I am really confused. Could you put some links where one can find these products? Or complete product not just pedal bodies?

    As ever, great data analysis. But, bottom line these are tall, heavy, cheapo second rate pedals with an average power meter connected (and a woeful reliability record). Garmin aren't a pedal manufacturer. A 4iiii/Shimano crank can be swapped in 2 minutes and a road one will easily serve for gravel, or XC/trail. Yeah, not LR, but that's unnecessary. SRAM is harder to cover, but Quark is fine, if harder to swap. Garmin are gonna be blown out the water once SRAM integrate power into Time pedals. Avoid.

    If money is not an issue, what would you recomment: These pedals (SPD) or a SRAM RED/Force AXS Power Meter Spider for my gravel bike?

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 3 lety +1

      Really depends on whether or not you plan to move the pedals, or use them elsewhere. If not, I see little reason to get the pedals. The Quarq will 'just work', be less prone to damage, and costs less.

      Yeah, no issues with that. Of course, it'll depend a bit on your frame/positioning for clearance there. But I occasionally do that sometimes.

    Summary: So they tweaked a few things on their 4 year old pedal, changed the name and are charging $100 more when the pricing of power meters has been trending downwards. Maybe they didn't get the memo that the competition is producing power meters that are just as good (I would argue better) at half the price. The ability to switch bodies is a moot point when you can have almost 3 separate full time power meters on your bikes for the price of these + a conversion kit.
