@@dolphindudelife314lol this ain't nothing. I love Skyrim (not Vanilla - even at launch I thought it was a little too boring compared to Oblivion), but most of the major plot lines are under baked and unless you have quite a high tolerance for subpar gameplay loops, the dungeons are grating and IMO rely on big overhauls to the progression and/or combat systems in order to become genuinely satisfying for anyone who has played anything a little more refined.
However, I do still agree it's one of the best games ever. With mods, that is certain. Vanilla is highly debatable, and probably depends how much you will be annoyed by the very unrefined combat and major lack of any other well done gameplay elements (sneak, thievery, persuasion, choices matter) by RPG standards.
I think playing Baldurs Gate 3 is the perfect example of how genre defining a lot the things Skyrim practically ignored are.

As much as I enjoyed it at the time, Skyrim's biggest issue is that everything exists in a vacuum. Quests don't change anything about the world itself, even the main ones, and people don't acknowledge your accomplishments. Morrowind has problems of its own but beating the game removes an entire weather effect from the game and everyone refers to you as Nerevarine, most being in relative awe of your presence - and most having high dispositions towards you for saving the land. Maybe its nothing crazy but its something at least, and I don't think it would have been that difficult to have the NPCs refer to you as Dragonborn in a similar fashion. Or having Dragons fear you now instead of still just randomly appearing and divebombing you.

I'd rather it locked me out and made me press F9 than pander to the lowest common denominator. Skyrim's success is due to the fact that it's so forgiving that any meathead can succeed. I get it, but it completely misses the mark on what the classic western RPGs were going for. It was all about the interactivity with the world and its inhabitants that made up for the jank ass gameplay. Fallout 2 probably captured the essence of WRPGs the best.

Scrutinizing Skyrim more, I'd say Skyrim isn't typically very deep in its main narrative, side quests and how it presents either. Its skill tree system, however, does provide you with the ability to build your character however you please. And its exploration and world design are decent, as its original soundtrack. I'd say Skyrim is more deep than people give it credit for, but ultimately its story isn't winning any awards, and in a game that calls itself an RPG, having a general mediocre story and quests and mediocre presentation and reactivity didn't do it any favors.

Then, after you get to the halfway point, you start to realize that the quests are just boring rehashes of previous quests (just dressed up differently). While I did replay it once or twice, there wasn’t really much replay value. And the guild quests are boring. I mean let's look at the Thieves guild. You earn you rank doing jobs, you don't just join them and get to do everything you do small jobs earning their trust, you build a rep among them, and then you meet the leader. In Skyrim you join them and they send you automatically on a job that the top members can't beat, you are the golden boy right from the get go. What's telling about all this is how memorable (or not) these quests and storylines are. I played Fallout New Vegas BEFORE this game and still remember how awesome the quests were; finding the robot bunker, raising the sunken bomber for the Boomers, the creepy sad Vault that was a vicious satire of American politics, the faction system, etc. I COULD go on for a very long time, that's how great the game was. As for Skyrim... all I really remember are the (admittedly beautiful) environments. I know I did everything shown here, but I cannot recall a single moment of it. I CAN, however, recall the ennui, this feeling of emptiness. The sinking feeling that this game made me the center of this painstakingly-built world... and then gave me nothing of substance to do. With New Vegas, the end game had me feeling like I was being carried by events that were largely outside of my control and I couldn't wait to see what happened next. As for this game, I didn't even finish it as I had literally NO desire or reason to do so.

While it's true that Skyrim has a lot of things you can do, and a lot of options for how to play your character, none of it feels as fleshed out as it could have been. Sometimes less is more.

Even with master enchanted gear, magic res cap, armor cap and potions that heal for 500hp. Thunderbolt that does like 800dmg when dual casted, at 0 cost. It still takes me 15 minutes to kill 1 dragon. And it'll take me like 4 tries lmao. Still, the original comments point isn't valid. Stories are inherently about special people. There are billions of stories of people doing normal things, the ones that are told are of jesus, of the messiah, of emperor's. Special people who did special things. Every elder scrolls character is inherently going to be a Jesus character, because that's the point. If you wanna role play as a Joe schmo who hunts all day just to meet ends meat, and never does anything special. The game gives you the liberty to do that too, I have several characters that never join a guild, and spend their entire playthrough hunting, dungeon diving and nothing else. Eventually I retire the playthrough and in my head I say, "They met their end like hundreds before them, without name or story." In my head many of my characters are the dead adventurers you find in Skyrim. They're people who reached for something they couldn't attain because they weren't special enough, sadly.

It kinda always bothered me how that’s never brought up. Personally I think it would’ve been much more impactful if the assassins that attack you were actually relevant to the plot in some way. Not directly, cause they’re dead, but they could’ve been friends with other members or the brotherhood. And you killed them. Just that alone could create animosity, especially once it’s revealed that you are the listener.
“This random person whose killed some of our own is to be our leader?? Outrageous.”
There could be a branching path (and actual branching path and not the garbage choice we ended up with) where on one hand you never gain the trust of your guild mates and are forced to flee and help destroy them. Or you can eventual endear yourself to them to the point where they develop a begrudging respect towards you..... and god I just wish the quests in this game made more sense and were better.

It also produces a weird mental whiplash as a sideeffect. Like, i can leave Helgen, go to Whiterun, haven't even killed my first Dragon yet, take the carriage to Winterhold because i want to be a mage.
2 hours later, your scrawny little scrub PC who has just reached Level 10 and dies when that Bandit over there looks at him funny is made the Archmage of the College for no particular reason other than that your predeccessor suddenly died and your superiors, who by all accounts would have a much more rightful claim to that position, eat the biggest humblepie in the cosmos. It just doesn't make any sense, even when you take all the sidecontent into account. It makes roleplaying as anything but a sellsword completely impossible (oh, the irony).
The biggest tragedy about Skyrim to me is that the really interesting stuff is hidden away, almost as if the developers were a bit ashamed of it or bullied by someone to make it less accessible.

Well thieves guild at least makes you do all those city influence quests so at least it takes a bit of time so it feels like you've done a decent amount for them. Dark brotherhood, nightingale, and especially College of Winterhold though definitely just plopped the titlee into your lap.
Like hello? I don't even have enough magika to cast an expert level spell why am I the fancy archmage? The only magic that was required was the atronach to enter. Pew pew or hack and slash for the rest works just fine.

It's also what makes this game so appealing to many, because this design allows for a really effortless gameplay loop. There is no struggle (unless you choose to up the difficulty which makes everyone hit harder and yourself hit less hard), at any moment you can just press on without having to give a shit about HOW you wanna play. You just do whatever you want, and you'll succeed. It's incredibly convenient and you really don't ever alienate the broader audience, because you can still enjoy it as long as you turn off your brain. It's basically the sitcom of gaming. You just sit there and relax.
It's just a product that isn't meant for players to truly engage with, and that sucks for those who would love to have more depth in a game that has so much potential.

Playing Skyrim in 2011 blew my mind. Playing it in 2023 makes me realise just how bad the writing is, not that the game is completely without merit.
They focus so much on a big, beautiful world to explore and forget to make any quest or faction motivations make sense or any decisions have any consequence

One thing I found that made skyrim feel deeper as a new gamer but shallow as I matured, was that all the locations are accessible. You could walk through a dungeon and just hit a point you can't pass because you never started a quest, or worse finish it and then have to come back 10 mins later and find one item in one chest

    • @Shadethewolfy
      @Shadethewolfy Před 2 měsíci

While in Morrowind, because every quest item in the game is manually placed in the world (well, with the exception of one: The Bone-Biter Bow is carried by the Wraith at the end of the Caverns but the wraith is set to always spawn anyway) you can, if you're willing to venture into high-level areas, completely sequence break a LOT of the quests. If you enter some dungeons early enough, the enemies will even be different because you haven't triggered the quests that spawn them (with the exception of the Wraith of Suul Senipul, of course. And I assume the Ash Vampire that holds Sunder.)|
      Morrowind sequence breaking is WILD.

Seriously, in my opinion the most irritating part of Skyrim is that you can literally be the most capable, the most respected, and the most influential person in the entire country, and yet people are still like "Who the fuck are you and why should I care?"
