There’s something so mesmerizing about fire. In the wintertime it keeps us warm. It gives us a reason to come home and get it going. It helps us appreciate hard work splitting the firewood stacking it and keeping it ready. It tells us not to take heat for granted for we know the value of it.
Generally speaking, there so much that one can do to increase the efficiency of a fireplace. The open concept shown draws air from inside the house and sends it up the chimney. A closed front with intake air coming from outside works well for keeping the inside of the house warmer. Also, there are coiled piping that can be installed in the flue which can be piped around the room to heat far corners. Unfortunately, closing off the front does reduce sound and smell levels.
I notice that the ends of the roof peaks in that northern part o the world are styled somewhat different than the more simpler design in, say America. Is there a special function for this or is it just a traditional design? (I like it either way).
You mean why it's not just a triangle? In Scandinavia houses were traditionally made to look like upside down boats because of their strong naval history. It's just stylistic.
Moisture in the wood turns to steam and causes the wood around it to split on a tiny level and that makes a crackling noise. At least I was told that when I was a kid, idk if it’s even true.
@Michael Smith And that can burn your house down. Those tiny explosions can shoot sparks out into the room. Also if u use spine or spruce u have to clean your chimney more often.
If you notice the squarish cracks in burned wood , the cracks are where the sound comes from... wood shrinks as it burns- that tension is released all at once when it parts, when the two sides snap apart it creates an audible shock wave , hence the sound you refer to.

A quiet night. Where you live seems so peaceful.
Simple yet mysterious. More, please.

Place a screen in front of popping wood to keep embers from ending up on something which might burn down the wooden house.

I thought it was just traditional, thanks for clearing that up.
...ok.
What is the actual sound of crackling in a fire?
