SRR wins by TKO in 9 rounds.
I would say Leonard, but at the same time I usually dont like to compare boxers prior to like Ali in the 60s, like Liston, and Patterson etc. To fighters after, anyone post 60s to now i think is fair game though, cause for me boxing is too different with the old school boxers and the more recent boxers. It's like 2 different sports.
Leonard is a more refined version of Robinson with more technical ability and hands just as fast as the original Sugar Ray but with not as much power. Robinson has a harder punch but Leonard beats him in every other way. Leonard wins 9-6 rounds in a 15 round fight
@@brandonlamb9067 The speed I definitely agree with you on but Leonard more skilled and refined? I don't see that at all.
@@lime455 You don't think someone like Robinson could compete today? He and 100's of other fighters from the pre 60's era look modern and much better than some modern champions today.
Sugar ray would win easily
😂😂😂
Got that right. Sugar Ray is the best.
lol, totally agree.
Lmao for real
I don’t know, man. Sugar Ray has good chances though
Leonard looks like has rocks in his hands, bricks at most. Robinson looks like he had cinderblocks.
crazy to think most of us will never see/have never seen Robinson fighting in his prime at welterweight since most of the footage is lost.
The footage of him past his prime is already something to behold, Imagine how amazing he looked in his prime.
what do you mean there is footage of him at his prime
@Mugi Very little at welterweight. Most of the footage is him at middleweight, where he was the best at the time, but not considered to be at his best.
He killed a guy in a ring his named was Jimmy Doyle.
@Khun Pan Yeah, unfortunately it happens in boxing. I can't imagine having to live with that sort of thing.
Best boxing channel on CZcams
💯💯💯
Being that both Ali and Leonard have admitted to molding their styles after Robinson, I would have to give Robinson the slight edge over Leonard, prime for prime.
id have to give the man a bit more than a "slight" edge
@@2stroketyson79 I don't disagree.
@HatianHurricane
Robinson was better, stronger more agile and better mobility
Keep in mind we don’t have the best of Robinson unfortunately
So we don’t know how much better he was in his prime
After the accident when he killed one of his opponent Robinson said I never hit my opponents with full power after that
His hook and overhand was crazy strong for his weight
He was combination of sugar ray Leonard and hearns…
unbelievable
Robinson wasn't a harder puncher than hearns at 147...and leonard was able to walk thru that power time and again to get through the six inch reach advantage which robinson would not have enjoyed....robison had two close decision wins over gavilan at welter and gavilan wasn't at Leonard's level as a puncher nor speed..so bottom line...its a close fight with either man winning imo
@@JL-bz9hi That is what I call a comprehensive assessment. Respect.
I appreciate both of these fighters and what they have done for the sport 💯
Two of the Greatest love watching both they made boxing look so beautiful with the skills and heart they had, Ray Robinson's record is unbelievable to me he's the Greatest pound for pound and how many fights and knockouts hes had Ray Leonard's victories over the Great ones Benitez, Duran ,Hearns ,Hagler makes him an all time great! Nothing but love and respect for both !!
Leonard came at a time where the sport was more advanced- partly thanks to Robinson. Put Robinson’s abilities in a time where boxing has advanced more and give him access to the same modern amenities then I’m going with Robinson every time
What are the techniques & skills that exist today that didn't in Robinson's time?
i assure you that skills have not progressed, if anything they’ve regressed
@@Cj-qk7il I think he was talking between Robinson time and Leonard time.
Basically the early 40’s to the early 80’s
I think boxing did made improvement between those decades.
@@yvans. i just tend to disagree, the older guys fought way more and just had a better understanding of timing, distance, etc.
@@Cj-qk7il that’s a valid argument
The boxing writers had to invent a new term: pound for pound greatest. So great was Sugar Ray Robinson that the existing language to describe the greatness of a fighter was inadequate when talking about him.
Sugar Ray Robinson, the only Sugar Ray, by everything and anything he wants.
Another excellent video Hanzagod 👍🏽.
Equally classy, perfect, poetic, intelligent and beautiful inside and out.
Thanks for another excellent video!
Bravo man great stuff as always
Think you picked a great track to match with this, Great Work haNZAgod!!!
Ray Leonard beat Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns and Roberto Duran that's why I picked him.
Well he also lost to Duran and got a dubious draw with Hearns which should have been a loss. Many also think Hagler beat him.
"I'd train Sugar Ray Robinson... because he was the best."
- Roger 'Most People Don't Know Shit About Boxing' Mayweather
I really appreciate both. Both were great great boxers. Very hard, to make
This fight would be very interesting and amazing I love both fighters they were truly one of a kind
This is decision fight in their primes . Neither man is getting ko by the other...too good both. Leonard had speed and imo the best most accurate combo puncher ever...robinson had power on his side. .everything else is even imo.
The tagline of this fight for me would be: *Which sugar is sweeter?*
it depends on who the judges are. If the judges care about shoe shining at the end of the rounds then Leonard might pull out the decision if he fights smart and and is on his bicycle. However I believe Robinson has power to knock Leonard down that could completely change the fight and Robinson was a great counter puncher with power as well as everything else. I believe that Robinson was the greatest and would defeat Leonard more times than he would lose to him on multiple fights.
Hard to say. Robinson looks like he hits a bit harder. Leonard is a bit slicker. Speed is on par. Both had great gas tanks along with chins.Either way it should be a close fight.
Shugar Ray Leonard is like Wasp brutal fast have my respect
Precioso ❤️🥊
I gotta go for the new blood...Every generation improves something from the old one by learning from the past and adding something new to the mix!
boxing cant really be compared with other sports since it went from being an extremely active and competitive sport to losing its relevance, competition and activity. the greatest fighters and coaches for boxing died and theres no way to replace their vast experience in the sport today
That's the case for most sports but Boxing is pretty much the exception to the rule. There are some great fighters today but none greater than Robinson. Do you think Canelo would beat Marvin Hagler and Carlos Monzon? How about Haney to beat Duran or Henry Armstrong? Just because something is newer doesn't necessarily make it better and that's most certainly been the case in all my years watching this sport.
@@hanzagod That’s true but the fighters back in Robinson’s time weren’t that great technically compared to the fighters of Leonard’s time. Haney could very possibly beat Armstrong
@@brocksimmons345 No. I disagree with that completely.
@@brocksimmons345Haney???? 😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Fantastic!
Imagine a fight between these monsters. Maybe even better than Burley-Charles 1.
I think the first 3/4 rounds go to Leonard as his speed and ability to get on the back foot+flexibility... Robinson would have been forced to outbox until he started seeing some defensive holes on the inside. It would have come down to the wire, but Robinson's ability to use active clinches, roll into body attacks, and unleash more dangerous 4-5 punch combinations from the outside than Leonard (especially late) = a close decision win for Robinson.
Leonard adjusts to his opponent in a more precise fashion than Robinson does and would never have lost to the fighters that Robinson did. More technical ability, better reflexes, better defensively, better timing, sharper feet, hand speed just as fast as Robinson if not slightly faster. Robinson has power and toughness over Ray and probably better in the clinch but that’s it. Leonard wins a solid points victory
@@brandonlamb9067 Robinson's space control would have eventually nullified Leonard's faster feet. And then Leonard would have had to meet Robinson's superior in fighting (something Leonard was hesitant to do versus a smaller fighter in Duran). Technique and defense was about the same level for both - it's just that Robinson preferred to parry & jab with his outside slip off a more bladed stance vs Leonard's more frontal ability to quickly slip out/in. Both boxed laterally. Leonard was on his toes more often, but Robinson's slides meant he could counter towards the inside easier than Leonard. Robinson's opponents were Sammy Angott, Fritzie Zivic, Henry Armstrong, Kid Gavilan, Bernard Docusen, Tommy Bell multiple times...and never lost. Leonard fought Duran, Benitez, Mayweather Sr, and Hearns at 147...losing to Duran.
And at the higher weight classes, it's no contest. Leonard had a dubious win over an older Hagler and robbed Hearns with a draw. Robinson fought and beat more relentless swarmers and punchers.
Finally, Leonard HIMSELF rates Robinson ahead.
"Someone once said there was a comparison between SRL and SRR. Believe me, there's no comparison. Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest".
@@brandonlamb9067 The only fighter to really beat Robinson in his prime at Welterweight was Jake Lamotta. The only fighter to beat Leonard in his prime at Welterweight is Roberto Duran. Duran began his career as a Super Bantam/Featherweight who became a dominant 135 pound champ.
Jake Lamotta once fought at Cruiserweight (190 pounds) in the Amateurs as well as Lightheavy (175 pounds) before cutting down and fighting at 160.
Robinson during there early fights was the size of a modern day Jr Welter during there early match ups and could be outweighed by 20 pounds or so.
Leonard lost to a greater fighter then Lamotta in losing to Duran but Duran was also the natural smaller guy moving up to face Leonard.
Robinson had his first loss to a much bigger opponent and yes I believe Jake capable of getting a win over Leonard. I think Leonard could still beat Jake more often then not as Robinson did.
@@TainoMantis Robinson did have an amazing jab that allowed him to manage spacing between him and his opponent but I simply believe Leonard had a sharper I.Q. than Robinson did and was able to make more intelligent adjustments. He said he fought Duran the first time with a brawling style on purpose because he wanted to prove he was tougher than Duran was and boxed in his natural style the second time around which allowed him to have such a decisive win in their second fight. That first fight was the only loss he had in his prime. Robinson's only loss in his prime was against LaMotta by unanimous decision and that was after he already beat Jake once. The Bronx Bull was nowhere near Duran in terms of overall ability.
Thomas Hearns was a better opponent than anybody Robinson had faced. Leonard is simply better both in resume and ability
@@combatsportlover6919 If you believe LaMotta is even in the same ball park as Leonard I would be happy to teach you about boxing ability if you'd like?
Taking nothing away from the great Sugar Ray Leonard but Robinson wins this 9 times out of 10 and I'm sure Leonard would tell you the same thing.
Great video as always, hanza👊
Disagree
At welterweight what a fight... both would be amazing in a fight at that weight in their prime... at middleweight Robinson would probably beat him as leonard was past his best at middleweight... but at welterweight he was something else...
Great video as always. What is the name of the song?
Quantic - Time is the Enemy
Sugar Ray Robinson at 147 the undisputed King at 147. Ray Leonard don't got shit on him
Leonard is better
TECHNIQUE and punch selection would be the deciding factor in this fight. I might catch hell for this, but SRL was a much more refined and controlled puncher, and has better handspeed. I gotta say SRL. Just my opinion. Hardly ever saw that man out of position, his built in defense was a bit sharper to me. This would be the greatest fight that boxing could ever conjure.
I'd hesitantly agree on the hand speed although it's pretty close but more refined and controlled? I don't see that.
Greatness VS Greatness ⚘️⚘️
Bout time absolute beauty
BOTH are too great to say....pick em.
Thanks Bro.
What about a Hasim Rahman Highlight ?
Could be one for the future but got quite a few things lined up at the moment
both have BLAZZING SPEED
Sugar Ray Robinson... I'd bet a Kings ransom. Fun vids, HaNZA.
Sugar Ray Leonard would win..
2:58 the original float like a butterfly!!!
A forgotten or not often used enough skill, the body punch.
Except for one fighter I can think of, Mike McCallum "The Body Snatcher".
Make more fantasy fights pre 1970's fighters
People don't seem to be too interested in them unfortunately.
Do you think we could get a Henry Armstrong V. Roberto Duran one?
Now that would be some match.
Pernell Whittaker vs Pretty Boy Floyd next?
It would of been a great match up that's for sure both had GREAT SPEED ,TIMING ATHLETIC ABILITY ,POWER & KILLER INSTINCT
I will give this one to sugar ray Robinson
It would've been a very close hell of a fight. I think that Sugar Ray Robinson would've won by split decision.
You should do sweet pea vs Floyd Mayweather next
Think most would rightfully pick Sweet Pea
i really love them both and their boxing but robinson It is unique in history for me. The truth is, I don't know if he had knocked out Leonard, but that fight would have been interesting and epic, take it for granted.
Considering Hearns punching power being a bit more than Robinsons I wouldn’t be expecting a knockout from him at all. Man just thinking about this fight I wish they made it atleast a computer fight like with Ali and Rocky.
I’m a fan of both.
SRL had the faster hands - SRR more power and effective punches
SRL had great footwork but was flat footed when throwing combinations - SRR had greater footwork and could throw combinations on his toes and could KO on the back foot
Would be a technical fight with both fighters dancing trying to establish jabs. I don’t see SRL bothered by the height difference as we’d seen in the Hearns fight however SRR is not wild like Hearns.
I think SRR by way of effectiveness and power that would prove to be too much in the later rounds. Definitely not an easy fight for SRR and possibly a boring fight for fans that don’t like technical bouts
Leonard had speed, robins had power both are excellent
I got Robinson but I don’t think it’d be a landslide, Leonard got the fastest hand speed ever so that’s a good fight but I got SRR
Robinson every time
Ray Leornard said in a interview a while back that he had no chance going against him and he said “I would get my ass kicked”
I've used that point as well but realistically I think Leonard was just being humble. I'm sure he thinks Robinson is the goat but at the same time going into a fight against him he'd be confident of winning. It's respect as I'm sure Robinson would have appreciated Leonard's skills too.
Leonard was so fucking fast
Fighters are more interested in looks these days
SRR in an entertaining fast paced fight
I think Leonard would win because he was more skillful and used flashy moves to win rounds. Leonard fought much more dangerous competition and proved himself more so than Robinson who had much lower level competitors. It would be a really fun war though. I see Leonard KOing Robinson because Robinson would not have any experience fighting someone so good and would get caught by surprise.
You can’t be serious with that haha
I am serious. Leonard was infinitely better than anyone Robinson ever fought and more technically skilled than Robinson. I see Robinson having a slight toughness and power advantage but that would not be enough to match Leonard's huge skill and speed advantage.
@@brewman6218 That's insane. Maybe the worst take I've ever seen.
Not sure what's insane about it. Skill, speed, and experience will usually beat power and toughness. Robinson's style looks a little sloppy to me in comparison with Leonard. Sorry I'm not sentimentally biased. It would be a very tough fight though. 60/40 in favor of Leonard. He's more experienced vs great competition and proved that by wars with Hands of Stone, The Hitman, and The Marvelous One. All 3 of them would destroy The Raging Bull who was Robinson's greatest opponent.
@@brewman6218 If you think Leonard's era was vastly superior then I don't think you're familiar with Robinson's level of competition. Even Leonard himself says Robinson is the greatest and there's no comparison.
Almost impossible to call. They would surely fight 3 times and nobody would win all 3. You have to go by present time and era so Robinson would be even more advanced having fought the skilled fighters of today before reaching Leonard. Robinson was so ahead of his time and never could grow as a fighter due to very little competition in way of power and speed. There were no Haglers or Hearn's or Duran or Benitez for Robinson to contend with. Hearns could have probably ko'd Robinson early. If Robinson could survive till the 6th round, then he would have a chance. It's all in the matchup!
Robinson beat some excellent fighters both at Welterweight and Middleweight. The notion that he had no competition I don't think I've seen anyone say that before?
@@hanzagod No competition for Robinson for he was just too good for what was out there. Also, what was out there was not even close to what Leonard had to deal with. Roberto Duran would walk through anyone back then without breaking a sweat.
@@chuckurso593 That is 100% incorrect. Kid Gavilan, Carmen Basilio, Gene Fullmer, Jake LaMotta, Fritzie Zivic, Henry Armstrong, Randy Turpin, Joey Maxim, Rocky Graziano, Bobo Olson, Sammy Angott. That's a list full of killers. Robinson fought and beat a number of great fighters like Leonard did.
듀란도 힘들어 했던 레너드가 로빈슨과 맞선다는건 말이 안됨.
Smith would've taken it even if he mimicked Leonard's style
Robinson is kinda overrated. Leonard fought in much more refined and dangerous era, and he fought and beat all-time great KILLERS.
He's not overrated Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis said he was the best and if they said it I believe them!
So Jake la motta, Rocky graziano, Carmen basilio, gene fullmer, Randy Turpin, Bobo Olsen, etc. weren’t killers?! You need a history lesson my guy. You made yourself look foolish.
@@selfmade8884 That's right he needs to do some research there were a lot of dangerous fighters back in Robinsons time that he doesn't even know about!
@@Jerrylewis12here Some of what you are saying makes sense but are the boxers your talking about better than Henry Armstrong , kid Gavilan ,Jake LaMotta , Bobo Olson? These are some of the fighters that Ray beat and they are all considered great fighters! So that means Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali and many many more fighters and trainers don't know what we are talking about? That's why he's call the best Pound for Pound look that up!!
@@melvintate8186 all that is just opinions some think Robinson was better some say Leonard
I think Sugar Ray has the talent to knock out Sugar Ray.
Leonard would retire before the fight
Robinson, 10th round KO.
SRR wins, SRR could do everything SRL does but better. I feel like SRR had had more in his arsenal than Leonard. Kind of like MJ and Kobe, MJ could do everything Kobe did but better.
Can Canelo beat either of them at 160 lbs with modern weigh-in ?
Robinson was a little better in every department, specially power
Sugar Ray Robinson by unanimous decision.
sorry leonard but the og has you on this one
Sugar Ray Leonard is the best Boxer of All time in my opinion
That's not a good opinion.
If u move sugar Ray Leonard weight class up to heavy weight who can beat him
Robison's hooks would have been troubling for Leonard I think. They do fight very similiar style... I'll go with Robison because he often fought (exchanging) into punching where as Leonard often punched into fighting (exchanging). So after the intial clash Robison would have the advantage stylistically. If Leonard could switch up his rythym. Boxing into fighting I could see him winning too.
First
Robinson much bigger puncher
Not really. They were both big punchers.
Robinson is the greatest.
I'd think Robinson. It might be a replay of the Duran fight and Leonard gets beat up. Then again, it might also be something like a replay of the Hagler fight, and it wouldn't surprise me if Leonard is gifted a split decision in the same way as he got against Hagler.
The only reason he fought Duran the way he did is because Duran pissed him off in the build up to the fight. I don't think he'd be dumb enough to stand there and trade with SRR.
I wouldn't say Duran beat Ray up. It was very close.
Robinson wins everyday of the week and twice on sunday
So many different scenarios could play out with this fight....I think Leonard was a bit faster and had better defense. I could see Leonard winning a 15 round split decision victory. Just don't give Robinson a rematch lol! I guarantee he'll figure Leonard out. 👊🥊
Ray Leonard had better defense
They're about equal in that department. Both had defensive skills but they also got hit more than people think too.
Suger Ray Robinson win
Sugar Ray win this one 😂
Cant take nothing from leonard but Robinson would of beaten him easily
Leonard lost to Duran enough said
And Robinson lost to Lamotta so ?
١٢/١/٢٠٢٣
Leonard would never fight his hero
Did Leonard take ped`s ?
I'm no Leonard fan, but Robinson wasn't the same fighter against opponents who were close to his height. I'm still picking Robinson, but it's admittedly biased.
I think ray Robinson have a little size advantage, besides from that I think there aproximantly equally as good. Both top 5 p4p of all time!
Sugar Ray has more power.
Ray Leonard has slightly more speed.
Their chin is equal.
Footwork Sugar Ray.
Ring IQ Sugar Ray.
Heart equal.
Stamina is probably Sugar Ray by a whisker.
@@dappadondadda100 thanku for teaching me.. feels good too get a free masterclass 👌
Robinson had power advantage...but leonard imo was the faster more precise puncher...everything else about the same...that's why imo its a close fight and goes the distance
I like both but Leonard would have been around as long as Robinson wanted him to.
Fight goes the distance...just like the two fights with gavilan did which is the closest analogy to leonard...only keonard much faster and harder puncher than gavilan was
@J L kid gavilan had over 108 pro fights. More than Leonard's career. The closest analogy to ray leonard was a fighter by the name of George Sugar Costner who ray robinson fought twice and knocked him out in both fights.
Robinson has much , IQ , power , better chin and the sweet violence.. for the rest they are equal.... But Robinson is the Genius ... Timing beat speed.. Leonard was schooled by the Duran I because of his bad inside technique...
Leonard's chin was great ...he took bombs from hearns that knocked out Cuevas and duran
If you approximate Robinson as "Hearns with a chin/more durability", then median outcome would be Leonard loses UD15.
robinson and hearns aren’t similar at all
I would agree with that analogy...although you left out that rob wouldn't have had 6 inch reach advantage over leonard..which means the fight is even in my book...given these two are arguably the top 3 all time 147
A toss up 50/50 .
Compare there top 3 opponents when they were in their PRIME ? ?
Man, Robinson threw with some bad intentions. This would have been a fantastic match up.
Both are great fighters . But Robinson does everything better than Leonard. EVERYTHING
Don't see that...only real advantage is power
Sugar ray Leonard could do it all elite inside at mid and at long range I’m taking sugar ray Leonard over the more athletic but less skilled Robinson all day
“less skilled”😂😂
@@Cj-qk7il fundamentally less skilled yes
@@Andrewthe22 no, no they aren’t lmao. fighters today are better outside fighter for the most part but they’re much worse at mid and close range. today you never see counter pincers like ezzard charles or archie moore.

Are you kidding me?
There’s only one “Sugar”
Ray Leonard, would not have stood a chance.
15 rounds in those days, separated the men from the boys.
• Chin
• Stamina
• KO with either hand

No comparison.
Leonard walked away from Duran hearns hagler on his feet...the fight goes the distance
Robinson to win a decision but it wont be easy
