This was an amazing video, I can't begin to imagine the amount of effort put into this.
Also you've probably already gotten hundreds of comments pointing these things out, but the quote at 1:00:26 is a direct reference to Earthbound, where "bepis" is replaced with whatever Ness' favorite food is.
Something that people kept pointing out to me on my iceberg video is that "tarot" isn't pronounced like "carrot," instead being pronounced like "arrow."

Unrelated but I’m getting nostalga and im cryng
Wait holy shit I just noticed that
46:34 The "papyrus survives" theory is based on a potential glitch that happens in the genocide route in the first time you see Undyne.
Where if you walk backwards instead of forwards before Undyne hears you in the bushes, even tho papyrus should be dead because you just killed him, his sprite still appears standing still in the corner of the screen, because usually in the neutral/pacifist route, he appears and speaks to Undyne. Maybe even tho he doesn't talk to her on the genocide route, his sprite is not removed from the cutscene, it just stays off screen, but you can see it if you walk the non-intended way. Leading people to think he's either alive or that's some sort of ghost.
Thank you for pointing it out i was gonna do it too
I guess yr right
Ping this comment!
@Handel yeah it's always such a funny and usefull trick to load characters with the map to be sure everything goes smoothly, the best exemple I know of is Paper Mario N64 with basically all cutscene characters stored under the map until you reach the right sequence
Yeah, just an unintended oversight. This was later patched out in version 1.01.
57:30 laughter as an expression of grief in undertale absolutely kills me-Toriel laughs in the genocide route when you kill her, People like Papyrus smiling as they die. Mettaton going “My poor love, I’m so filled with grief I can’t stop laughing!” Is like a key component of the game. They can’t believe you’re doing this to them, they can’t stop laughing.
Just makes goner kid's dialogue even worse on the feelings
In Undyne's regular fight, her attack dialogue right after her series of "right now!" is "ha.....ha"
@@HumanoidDerplingI thought that was just heavy breathing
@@derpyslurp8779 If it was, Toby probably would have used "huff...puff" like he did with Sans.
27:52 Maybe the "She'll find another child and instantly forget about you," is Flowey projecting. Maybe he feels as if he's been replaced and forgotten about by Toriel after she's taken in so many kids after his death. He probably doesn't realize that's how he feels but I wouldn't doubt he felt replaced by the other kids
But remember flowey has no soul to feel compassion
@SomeDudeOnTheInternet well yeah, I didn't mean it in a way that's like, "I don't wanna see you hurt like how she hurt me." I just interpret it as him projecting his hurt onto the player to hurt their feelings, saying how she'll abandon them like how she did to him, and that she doesn't rlly care about them
@@NoIdeaWhatToDoHere compassion. He could be feeling bitter and angry instead, replacing what would him feeling any sad feelings
EXACTLY what I thought
Saw a tumblr post about this that I'll try to summarize for this:
It's actually the opposite.
Toriel isn't trying to replace her son, but rather she sees him in every child who falls into the Underground. She takes them in, loves them, acts as a mother, all in an attempt to make them stay. Because every time a child leaves, every time they walk through the door and out of the Ruins, Toriel sees Asriel leaving the barrier, only to return dead. Every time she sees a child leave the safety of her home, she loses her son again, and again, and again.
Edit: spelling
Re: Chara's alternate grave theory. I think the purpose of that tree is actually to say Toriel isn't a good gardener. Later in new home the plants are thriving because Asgore is a great gardener. On the inverse Asgore isn't a good cook, but Toriel is which goes to show how they used to really compliment each other before they split.
i really like that theory!
Honestly it’s really sad that the two of them ended up the way they did, regardless if it’s Undertale or Deltarune. They really seemed like the perfect couple.

To give him credit, the guy on 700 Club was being pretty open minded. Yeah, he didn’t know who Sans was, but he didn’t just go off on a religious rant, he gave the mother reasonable advice. If she didn’t want her being fixated on something, then give her something better. He didn’t tell her to just take it away, or punish her, like so many others would’ve sprang on.

matpat shit in this guy's cereal for sure, the hate was INSANELY out of proportion

Matpat is really annoying to a lot of us. Sorry man. He's not the worst guy who ever lived but his naivety of his own impact coupled with relentless gimmicks is just too much. Maybe if I found him when I was a kid instead of an adult I might differently. Don't take it personal.
@@josephmatthews7698 "naivety of his own impact" is insulting his fanbase and "relentless gimmicks" doesn't mean anything. regardless, you won't have to complain about him for long, i guess. although, knowing matpat haters, they will still find a way
@josephmatthews7698 you're hating just to hate bro. He is not naive to his own impact, he knows how popular he is and uses it to give many small creators a voice as well as big scale donations. And he doesnt has any gimmicks he just makes theories on stuff he loves. Your comment and this video proves that most matpat haters have no proper ground on their hate of him and are just toxic.
That was so out of proportion, you can tell he's got no life if he gets that worked up over something that happened to other people years ago.
Can you imagine being an all powerful being combining perhaps thousands of souls and there's just one person who you weren't able to absorb because they went "Nah. No solicitors." and closed their blinds. There's an almost cosmic sort of humor in that.
Napstablook just didn't feel like being absorbed
napstablook is a god and doesn't know it and nobody knows it
concerning "every time this old tree grows any leaves, they fall right off": i'm pretty sure this is meant to be a metaphor for toriel. she's the tree and the leaves are all the children she's lost.
ooooh I like this theory :o
Oof
now thats a lot of children
That, or she is just terrible when it comes to gardening. Because, with Asgore, he can't bake the Butts-Pie. Which was Tori's specialty. And Asgore was the gardener of the family. We see this with his throne room being filled with Buttercups and him watering said flowers.
@@virusstudio7115 well, i mean, Asriel, Chara, Frisk, and the others 6 humans, well that's a lot of children indeed
When I was younger, I had a "theory" that when frisk(the player) hits the flower bed it woke chara and flowey, which is why during the genocide play Chara is there more than in the other plays, looking at it now, it's definitely cannon, but I just liked knowing that I actually kinda understand the game at like, nine or eight lmao
Idk why I added flowey w it, guess I kinda didn't like siblings being a part
@@brokenrecord.1okay so I’m gonna head canon your theory really quick: flowey was visiting chara’s grave
1:12:43 my only theory, is that "mystery" was originally supposed to be used when you complete the ball game in Snowdin. It was scrapped and Toby Fox left it as a little Easter egg
Adding to Papyrus being stronger than he lets on, if you spare him on a genocide route, go on a date with him, then check the box of bones in the corner of his room he'll make a remark like "You're lucky when you stopped when you did, otherwise I would've blasted-", then he stops himself which implies that he has blasters of his own.

this part was so menacing and i dont know why
I totally could have missed you saying it but, when you kill Toriel then go back upstairs and sleep in bed, fallen down plays slowly.

damn that’s twisted
Wait, in the video, it said that the term "fallen down" meant that a monster has become ill or weak. And since the protagonist killed Toriel, she is technically fallen down. And fallen down is also the name of the song that plays when you first encounter Toriel, probably referring to the protagonist "falling" onto the flower bed.

I feel like the fact that people are STILL discussing all of Undertale's big and small secrets, and theorizing about Gaster (or just lore in general) over 5 years after its release cements the fact that Undertale is a genuinely iconic game that managed to actually LEAVE its "Toxicity Era" back in 2015-2016
I'm so glad that we managed to leave that era

Yeah same chris.

This was such a great iceberg. You made me realize about info I didn´t know or forgot through the time.
I was wondering if the "Ball" easter egg just came from the idea of typing "Ball Game" referring to the aforementioned minigame.
Keep it with the great work, man. You got yourself a new follower
I'm returning to the undertale fandom after being inactive/absent for like 5 years and watching this really made me realize that I need to finish playing Deltarune (both chapters) and also that I forget what is considered well known in the fandom.
I do think it's interesting that gaster is considered a skeleton because in reality there's not that much evidence, save for the sprite name and font stuff, plus the sort of similar design that could have a white skull and eyesockets. In reality this "character" if you could even call it that, was another one of those things the fandom took and made a whole backstory and existence after one tiny appearance within the canon, similar to the redhead in the danny phantom TV show being taken by that fandom and turned into "wes". I do also headcanon that he's a skeleton and the former royal scientist, but it fascinates me how intense the fandom is with their backstory and what they consider canon when it really isn't even known if one thing or another is canon.
(also I haven't played the game or interacted much with the fandom in years I'm going primarily off memory forgive me if there's something that was confirmed to be canon by toby or I misremembered)
I know this is an old comment, but him being the former royal scientist is not headcanon. His followers explicitly state that he was the former Royal Scientist if you meet them in the game.
Most things that are bottom of the icebergs are pretty dark and horrifying
Then there's "Big Wienener Zone"

It may also be another reference to Touhou since Sariel is the final boss in the first game, HRtP, and has some superficial design similarities.
This is just reminds me in Deltarune after you wake up it Chapter 2 when you check the computer it said "Epic Games stuff" and it says "The final boss seems to be a creature with rainbow wings" this could be referencing Asriel Dreemurr Phase 2 which is the final boss of Undertale TPE.

What if Undertale's Sans IS Deltarune's Sans?
Think about it; the Don't Forget picture + the fact it only appears after talking with clam girl who mentions Suzy/Susie
During his battle how he talks about giving up on "going back" which is often assumed to be going back to past, lost timelines but could be going back to his original world i.e. Deltarune
Sans being extremely likely connected to Gaster, and Gaster being meta in Deltarune's world.
Just a theory.
It's really weird, because it could easily go both ways.
Sans' house and Grilby's are both in Deltarune too, and look literally identical to their undertale counterparts, minus Grilby's which Sans clearly redecorated AFTER it was Grilby's.
@@MirrorHall_Clay Considering Deltarune was planned before Undertale, I think it makes much more sense that Sans went from Deltarune to Undertale. Although obviously Deltarune hasn't been fully released, from Undertale we'd already come to the conclusion that Sans (and Papyrus, for that matter) had come from /somewhere else/, while nothing in Deltarune indicates Sans isn't originally from that world (unless you count the player treating sans as an acquaintance, which still doesn't really contrast with this theory at all).
On that note, keep in mind during Deltarune Papyrus is still so little that Sans asks Kris to babysit him. In Undertale, Papyrus is grown up. I had frankly forgot about the theory I commented but now that I think about it again, I'm pretty damn certain on it.

*_OH GOD I HAVE A GAME THEORY._*
The government has secretly been making sure nobody actually finds the monsters, and have instead of actually doing something about the children falling, called it another case of someone going missing, ever since they discovered the very cave their ancestors banished the monsters to.
Oh god I hope this doesn't go out of context...

It's possible that Frisk reminds Asgore of the other children he's killed and that's why he sadly nods. He knows Frisk is aware of them and he's not proud of it at all. It's his duty.
Load Me.
So one of my friends, who played the game totally blind last Fall, discovered this and theorized that Asgore knew about saves. I dismissed it, saying he was just thinking about other children. However, based on this dialogue, he thought he could spare Asgore by dying repeatedly and reached an absurd amount of deaths, well above 6. The dialogue remained the same, even as the death count surpassed the # of humans he's actually killed.
While it doesn't prove it, I think that gives some more credibility to the theory that Asgore has some knowledge about saves.
It seems like pretty basic knowledge to me.
why are you liking asgore's thing
Nah, frisk tells asgore that "you've killed me multiple times" (more or less) nd he just nods. Maybe itd cause he knows he technically can't beat you
The sans is ness thing was a joke, and the pope actually liked Undertale, also somebody gave the pope a surfboard soooo

A little tidbit on Gaster's removed Tarot card:
It is the 9th major arcana, that being "The Hermit". I would explain the card's meaning on my own because i'm familiar with tarot but here's an exerpt from Biddy Tarot:
Upright Hermit:
"The Hermit shows that you are taking a break from everyday life to draw your energy and attention inward and find the answers you seek, deep within your soul. You realise that your most profound sense of truth and knowledge is within yourself and not in the distractions of the outside world. You leave behind the mundane to set off on a journey of self-discovery, led only by your inner wisdom and guiding light. Now is the perfect time to go on a weekend retreat or sacred pilgrimage, anything in which you can contemplate your motivations, personal values and principles, and get closer to your authentic self."
The Reverse Hermit suggests 1 of 2 things:
1. You are lacking introspection and care for yourself. Perhaps the answer you are looking for is right inside of you? You have been clouded by too much outside interference.
2. You have retreated too far away from the rest of the world. It's time to come back from the void you ran into to think about everything.
*Now isn't that very fitting, considering this is the card missing from the deck? The character who became a hermit represents said card and is conveniently missing.*
HERMITU PURPRUE
damn, this fits joseph perfectly.
HERMIT PURPLE.

Well, the thing is that those deep mysteries were publicised, put on the Internet, and discussed to death. The Sans fight is something only a tiny percent of players have ever legitimately experienced, yet it's unquestionably the most famous part of the entire game.

The way I knew most of what was presented in the deep layers of this iceberg says a lot abt how much research I’ve done on this game
You've probably already gotten comments on this, but "papyrus surviving his death" is probably referencing how in an earlier patch, after the first cutscene with Undyne, you could see papyrus' sprite even if you killed him at the far left of the room.
Don't forget when jacksepticeye was the first person to notice sans sound like patrick

The papyrus survives his death is about a glitch that appears on genocide after you kill papyrus in the first undyne encounter walk left instead of right and papyrus is just standing there
The real reason this happens is probably that papyrus' sprite still gets loaded in, just never walks in to trigger the cut scene
Of course fan theories go wild

This iceberg could honestly triple in size depending on how connected to Undertale Toby wants DeltaRune to be, and that's both really terrifying and incredibly exciting, considering the Gaster connections in DeltaRune are one of the most exciting parts of that game
(Not to mention, DeltaRune on its own will probably have a pretty large iceberg...)

This quote is a direct Earthbound reference. In a restaurant in Summers, a customer will directly call out what the player has set to be Ness's favorite food and talk about how it disgusts them. And yes, you can set it to be bepis.
@superbomb929 RBLX no.
Backtracking and seeing flowey is stalking you for the first time is straight up anxiety inducing
I used to think it was some sort of glitch
I didnt realized that was Flowey until now
Bro I know it's bad but don't go soo harsh on matpat
Congratulations!
You've made an UNDERTALE iceberg video with more than 1 hour of duration WITHOUT breaking the ABC rule!
What’s the abc rule?
13:44 of note: since sans will say the line about reports showing a spacetime anomaly regardless of whether the player has ever saved or loaded before, its possible that the anomaly he "detected" by whatever means was actually flowey experimenting with saving.
Or, assuming it is referring to the player at all, they just didn’t make new dialogue for the event of a player deciding to do an entire genocide run in one sitting. I don’t have an in-universe explanation for it though. I like the Flowey idea though.
honestly, it's probably the combined result of you and flowey fucking with the timeline. after all, there really was much of a time gap between flowey getting the DT abilities and us falling down and more or less stealing the DT abilities from him.
But he will say it's your fault anyways there are only two ways this could be explained the first explanation and the most probable and true one in my opinion is that toby did not think about this, and never thought that the player would actually manage to do such a thing, honestly if I were him I wouldn't think about it either. The other explanation is that the player entering the world of undertale and taking control over frisk's soul missed up the timeline so much and affected sans' readings, since we know from deltarune that the player doesn't control frisk but controls his soul this could be possible. Though explanation 1 makes more sense

But why
To back up the gaster dad theory, there is a Twitter post Toby made a long time ago showing concept art for the game. One of them says papyrus “has a brother named comic sans.”. But something noteworthy is that at the bottom right of the post their is censored text with the reading “and a ____ named __________.” Why would Toby censor this?

It was only 6 years ago - wait, holy crap, Undertale was 6 years ago. Damn, I feel old now. It's crazy to me to think that there are people who had Undertale as part of their childhood. But then again, the people older than me probably thought the same about me, so I guess all's fair.

Theory: Flowey was the vessel from the True Lab.
It so heavily hints at it. He mentions determination is the only thing that lets him exist. They tried to put a soul into him, but failed. So they put them back into the garden.
Dude that's literally what happened, not a theory
Yeah it literally says in genocide thats what happens flowey tells you
You know what, i watch this for the first time, and it's goood soo goood, man, i really appreciate your hard work on this❤️🔥
clamgirl shows up unconditionally in the switch version, and when talked to in the true pacifist epilogue, says, "So you never met my neighbor's daughter. But please don't despair. For the time that you will meet her..." upon forwarding the text, her sprite changes to a grayscale version called "goner_clam_girl" and she says, "...is fast approaching." after this, she disappears with the same sound as mysteryman and gaster follower 2.

1:00:10 Fun fact about Bepis: If you use hacks to remove your armor, and get the Papyrus call at the second flower puzzle, he will say he saw you wearing Bepis. No other dialogue is changed, he just replaces what your armor would've been with Bepis.
something i forgot to mention, is, actually, not really mentioning something, its just clearing up what the "second flower puzzle". that was in waterfall, the place you were able to get the abandoned quiche, and the place you read the sign saying: "Congratulations! You went the wrong way!"
video was good but the bepis section was hard to sit through like no way it's that funny
I have two theories for how gaster died
1. He fell into the core and instead of simply dying he managed to resist death similarly to how undyne did and fused the the core which is why one of the followers commented that gaster is listening
2. Gaster was experimenting with determination and injected himself with determination to become immortal which worked but came with the consequence that he was shattered across space and time
In both theories he is filled with determination which is why his appearance looks somewhat melted like the almagimations
I've heard more on the first one than the second one but I wish there was more info about him in general
@@spacekitty6568 Hopefully there will be more when Deltarune Chapter 2 is released, with the locked doors in the town in Chapter 1, and such.
I think the first one is true one of the followers litarley say he fell in to his creation
Asgore nodding sadly is probably just an adult going along with the weird things kids say.
Or him mindlessly agreeing because he wants Frisk to stop talking and trying to to spare him; he already feels horrible and that would just be making him feel worse.
I still do agree that Asgore knows about it though, I think after killing six human souls (who knows how many times due to saves and resets) you would develop a sort of awareness to what's going on. It is weird how he doesn't mention it or hint it at all though.
very informative, thank you for giving your time
