My '98 Ranger has the 2.3 as well, 8 plugs, 5 speed manual regular cab. I did have to replace the throw out bearing in it and man was that a job! So while the transmission was down I put in a whole new clutch kit, master cylinder. slave cylinder and a new flywheel and rear main seal as well. Has 138,000 miles on it right now and runs like a new one. I got the truck for free from an Uncle that just didn't want to mess with it. The paint is going...it's that blue/purple depending on how the sunlight hits it. I've been thinking about sanding it all down and painting it with tinted bed liner.

@@Rebel9668 Nuh uh, 98 2.3 has 3 plugs per cylinder. Just kidding, and I agree.. changing the hydraulic throw out bearing is a huge pain, bleeding the air out is even worse.. I wish they used an external cylinder and fork..

this truck is a good candidate for liquid wax, usually from a self serve car wash, sprayed on the underside, most of the engine compartment, and even if you can, under the carpets on the floor pans. plus silicone tire shine protects mufflers. You might have gotten a few more miles out of that water pump by filling the bearings with silicone grease through the drip holes. I have had some luck putting just a few drops of trans fluid in the coolant for lube and corrosion, though it can trick diagnosticians. I learned the hard way that silicone in coolant reduces heat transfer, thus harming radiators. Regular grease in the water pump bearing might work, but might also attract dirt in the longer run.

HOORAY! this looks like your most practical, and therefore greenest, project yet! Can those 4 cylinder engines be bolted into larger vehicles for traction and efficiency? mounts? bellhousings? low enough first gears for uphill starts?

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you guys. I firmly believe in fixing up old cars and trucks instead of sending what can be made into perfectly good and efficient transportation into a crusher. I understand that some vehicles are just too ragged out to be saved economically, but there's many out there that will still deliver good service for miles and years to come. Looking forward to more and thanks for your efforts; the videos are really well done. Peace.

Running a 96 ranger. Got it for 500 but it wasn't so simple for me. Put a flywheel and starter in it. My uncle sold it to me and said that was all it needed. Well I'll not trust his word again. Turns out it needed a new coil, purge valve, purge solenoid, timing belt, his filler neck rigging corrected, valve body, transmission solenoids and another frigging engine. To be fair, I'm sure replacing valve springs, that rust putted cam, milling the head flat and replacing the cam, mains and rod bearings, the engine might be ok lol. He knew it was full of rust. He put a head gasket in it thinking it would be fine. Then suckered me in on it. I found an engine for $125 and replaced the other parts as needed. I give that truck hell almost daily. No complaints, been running it 2.5 years now. My take away is family will screw you worse than any used car salesman. I don't have a high opinion of those guys either...

Matthew Devine these 2.3s are pretty reliable but always make sure you have coolant in them. My gauge always read cold so it went unnoticed when the coolant leaked out and overheated the engine. Wound up cracking the head. No water in the oil though. Really just sped up my plans for dropping the 5.0 in though.

I had a 94 Exploder 4.0 AOD4 and I had to have the AOD4 rebuilt 5 times. The 4.0 was built with forged internals, a cam (I don't remember the specs), all aftermarket valvetrain, and an Explorer Express supercharger kit. It made 257 whp and it kept overheating the transmission even with an oversized cooler. Then I had a 95 Ranger that I bought for $500 and it had the same issue with the coolant gauge. I replaced both senders and it still read cold, until it overheated so much that it cracked both heads. I replaced both heads with an older 4.0 and it finally killed the 4R55E trans. Ford trans have always been junk imo. They just can't take the torque.

    A couple of notes...
-It's well known on 5.0 Mustangs (which I have to think you've heard about) that when those fans crack, they end up going through the hood and usually take out all sorts of other stuff on the way out. Sooner than later is my suggestion on replacing that one. RPM is RPM, Mustang or otherwise. On my 5.0, my fan was all cracked out like that 78,000 miles. E-fan is what I ended up doing. Speaking of... It also, at a glance, looks like your Ranger uses a similar alternator (with its stupid 10awg charging wires in a plastic connector instead of a stud, like normal folks) that are famous for burning vehicles down. Might check the condition of that connection and clean/replace as needed. Again, I just went with a different alternator entirely (necessitated by the e-fan).
-The fuel line clips that you described that suck, _really do_ suck. I won't claim I invented it, because someone else out there probably beat me and I just don't know it,, but I discovered a nice trick to get those off easily and the video is on my channel (titled: How to Disconnect GM Fuel Lines (the easy way)! Max's Tech Tips!). I highly, highly, recommend you give it a shot the next time you're up against one of those bastards. The Ford clips are so much better.
-That line you're using is commonly referred to as NiCop and is absolutely amazing. I'll use nothing else for the rest of my life. I also have a long (rambling) video (titled: Metal Fuel and Brake Line Forming+Flaring Tools, Materials, and Methods!) about brake line forming and I cover NiCop line pretty well. I'm sort of surprised you guys haven't used it before, but it's the real deal.
Anyhow... You were one of my inspirations for even starting a channel, so I hope maybe a little something or another in those videos is helpful to you! Hope to see more of that Ranger as well. Nothing beats a beater and I've got a soft spot for unloved Ford economy boxes. I always enjoy your content!

I can now better appreciate all the effort and time one of our neighbors put into his Ranger and it's 2.3 after he purchased it at farm equipment auction four years ago (well before we moved back home to South Carolina and met him). The truck had been parked by it's original owner, the elderly and now deceased farm owner in 2006, under a "car shed" attached to his hay barn and basically forgotten over the years that followed. Our neighbor was the only bidder on the truck and "won" it for $500.00. After trailering the Ranger home he did all the work required to make it a daily driver himself except for mounting and balancing new tires and of course the front end alignment. As a supervising surgical trauma nurse at one of our area hospitals he is on call 24/7/365 and has driven that old green Ranger during hurricane related weather, icy roads, you name it, and drives it daily even now when going to and from the hospital on his regular shift.....Round trip: roughly 120 miles five days a week and, often as not, seven days a week since he is always on call. He purchased the truck with just over 85,000 miles on the clock and now has almost 200,000 on it and he does all the basic maintenance, oil changes, air filter, etc. himself in his back yard.

If you are thinking there could be a blown head gasket, I would do a compression test on all cylinders, and if 2 cylinders, say 3 and 4 have low compression, it's got a blown gasket in-between 3 and 4, that happened to my ranger.

My 2003 Mountaineer was $600. Bought it in August of 2016. I've replaced the entire suspension and exhaust. Probably put about $2000 into it, counting a brand new set of Cooper Discoverers last month. If I paid $2600 for a truck, I could have still had to put a couple thousand into it in 3 1/2 years. It starts up every day and has never let me down.

My 2000 S10 extreme cost $850 5 years ago. Needed a fuel pump $9 from China and a new spark plug wire. Guy drove it from Florida zero rust with a miss fire he was told it needed an engine. Loaded v6 extended cab. Came with about $3500 in aftermarket parts a custom hood a bed cover SS header's cold air intake etc. Needs tires still has the tires I originally purchased it with got 30k on them now. In 5 years I've replaced the exhaust the front breaks the radiator and did the intake gaskets just because the are known to fail.

Yep these rangers ( I have had 3) need thermostats and the gasket often. I have a short video with important tips when replacing timing belt on this engine, camshaft wheel has two markings: a triangle and a diamond. You probably already know this, but want to match the triangle with triangle. Often they're covered with grime and a person finds that diamond thinking that is the marking to line up, but the diamond signifies open valves and should be pointed upward. That thermostat housing will crack easily too, wanna be careful. The electronic choke is exactly right, that's the high idle. These fords are mazdas which is why they're full of metric sizes.

The ford Courier was made by Mazda, not the rangers, ford made the rangers and the b series from b2300 to b4000, including the b2500 and b3000, that's why they have a ford engine in them,

  • @atmosrepair
    @atmosrepair Před 3 lety

Those rangers also have aluminum gas tanks, that rust out from inside and then wreck the entire fuel system. I have had 3 rangers - 1986, 1998, and 2005. Now I am driving a 99 Tahoe, which comes factory with a plastic gas tank that holds a whopping 30 gallons. they make the chevy more sensible with the fuel filter and not those special gas line fitting and chevy includes an adjustable and movable fuel line with 5/8 nuts for fittings. So much simpler for the owner to replace themselves. Another pain in the but will be changing spark plugs in that ford. The block is also aluminum, which is prone to crack with the temperature extremes it is exposed to in the northern hemisphere. And such a small engine, really bites when merging onto the freeway or passing someone. I used to drive the 5SPD manual transmission and push the rpms up so high that I would have to go under the hood and tighten down the valve covers.

Had a 89 ranger. Was my dads beater with a heater for many years. Had 296k when I got it from him, done pretty much what ya all did plus clutch. Drove pretty much issue free for 8 plus years to 352k. Gave it to my nephew, flywheel failed at 425k. Would run if u push started. Wasn't worth fixing after he got done with it. I believe in preventive maintenance. Drive a 2003 dodge ram with 244k. No tranny issues. 🤔 bed rust, well you know. 🤣

until recently, i never paid more than $750 for a vehicle. i drove most of them for two or three years before they needed anything major, at least major for me. oil, filters, brakes, shocks, battery, exhaust, tires, these are things you know it will prolly need, and are no big deal to me. so, yeah, beaters are definitely worth it. plus, if you don't drive it till it dies, you can get your money back when you sell it.
