- Been working at this for at least 2 months now that things have been wrapping up in the dumpster fire of 2020. I’ll be honest though, I’ve been doing well in terms of productivity and travel. It does close the chapter on traveling without being able to check into hotels on my own. With my last big trip of the year down pretty much on my dollar.
Within this video there is a lot of Norfolk Southern, Amtrak and CSX K5LA’s to be heard. One that kind of becomes the star is the K5LA that SARM is currently using on Clinchfield 800. An Amtrak K5LA that’s been put in place so that the M5 stays nice and warm and secure.
Other interesting instances of K5LA’s is on Amtrak Piedmont’s F59PH’s and Music City Star’s F40PH-2’s.
My favorite out of them all has to be 25:49
Overall there are K5LA’s from CSX, NS, Amtrak, NJT, SEPTA, Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, and MBTA.

I think my favorite horn in this video is 11:10. I wasn't expecting to see a CSX locomotive come out from the right side of the frame, that's how good it is to me.
CSX has great K5LA’s, what do you mean wasn’t a expecting a CSX?
Take Amtrak 184 at 32:15, for example. If it didn't have a doppler effect on it, it would sound basically the same as the one I mentioned in my original comment. That was the railroad that pioneered the sound of this particular type of horn, and I honestly never heard one on a CSX engine that sounded as nice as 138's. I didn't mean to say that they have bad K5LAs or anything, just that they usually sound like most of the other ones in this video, fine, but that particular kind of tone is what I love to hear in a K5LA.
