  • I received a text message from a friend that a herring spawn was happening at Point Richmond. I immediately packed my cast nets and went to Point Richmond to catch herring.

    We used to have massive herring runs in the creeks rivers and small streams in NC. The Herring have disappeared and no longer visit. Stocks have been destroyed by overfishing.

    I hope over time you don't fuck up the run by destroying there eggs.. Just cause there might be 100 billion eggs does not mean your going to get 100 billion fish ..

    Hi there I have. Been following your videos.. What's the rules for cast netting..is it only legal on sea. Or wbt river and lakes

    • @outdoorschoolofthought
      @outdoorschoolofthought  Před 4 lety

      Cast nets are only legal for getting baitfish in saltwater. They are definitely not allowed in freshwater. (This is specific to California.)

    I was out there this year too! It was my first year and I had a similar net at first, 4' and with the light weights. It was terrible. Ended up buying a behemoth, kind of messed up, old net from one of the grandfatherly old dudes out there. And even though my pattern was still completely awful (kind of a crescent moon shape- embarrassing) the net was so big and sank so fast that I still caught fish. Lessons learned for next year!

      food vivant I bought a 8ft net for next year. I was struggling with that 4ft one with a short rope. Someone stole my second net on that pier too! I'm ready to throw big pancakes.

      What? That sucks that someone stole your other net! Seems totally against the fisher code. But yes next year! Pancake breakfast all the way 😄

    I just learned to fish today, pier fishing in Tiburon. Is the herring still happening in this area?

      That's awesome! I like fishing at Paradise Beach Pier in Tiburon. I'm still watching reports for another herring spawn. A good place to check if a herring spawn is happening is at: thelostanchovy.com/2019-herring-spawn-reports/

    Where did you buy the net? Is there a size limit to use for the net?

    • @outdoorschoolofthought
      @outdoorschoolofthought  Před 4 lety

      tom huynh there isn’t a size limit on the net. I suggest 3-5 ft radius nets if you’re looking to throw repeatedly. Wider and heavier nets will tire you out faster. The tricky part to figure out is how long of a rope you should use. If you need to extend the length of rope to hit bottom, make sure you use a double uni knot to secure both sides of rope. They have nets for sale on Amazon, Bass Pro Shop, and Wish.

      TheCrayonStealer They show up to gorge on all the herring! They do a lot of damage to cast nets.

    What are you going to do with their Herring?

    • @outdoorschoolofthought
      @outdoorschoolofthought  Před 5 lety

      I fried a few for my family and saved the rest for bait. Last year, I made pickled herring.
