- @TheLostAnchovy does not eat bait...but he tried it today lol
This was a really fun trip for me. First time actually catching herring with a cast net. Couldn't have asked for a better day!
Check out Keith's Blog www.thelostanchovy.com/
and his CZcams channel • Four Day Herring Hunti...
Recently fully stocked up on New Beanies for these chilly remaining days of winter along with some other things.

It was a good a day as we can ask for. Thanks for the invite on the butter boat. Looking forward to many more adventures in the future brother with you. 🙂🙂
Carlos said we should all go out together lol I'm down for that too one day 👊
Keith!!! Lemme get a herring! Fisherman's life, you should join us all chasing salmon this year!
True about Herring: czcams.com/video/sOwCah4aymU/video.html
Keith learned that there are even more tasty fish in the sea, you learned that you're ready to invest in a larger cast net. Sounds like a great day for both of you, thanks for sharing.
Yep it was such a fun day. Everything fell right into place
Here Keith's own channel if you haven't seen it! czcams.com/video/gG4pDE0OnXQ/video.html
Was a great day!
I really like the positivity of sharing and letting the whole community grow together. We all need to bring each other up. It's such a rewarding feeling.
So good to see TLA getting the credit he deserves. I've made great memories with my 63-year-old father. following his blog 3 years now.
Living through you’re experiences as I sit here at my work desk. Keep being awesome!!
Make sure your manager not behind you....lol
Glad we could keep you entertained at work!
@@Jeevan.Canada Dont have to worry about that when you are the manager 😎
I spent a year in Sweden as an exchange student. Herring is so big there! Pickled, in cream sauce, etc. Only, I never had them fresh! Would love to try them one day! I love them in cream sauce and pickled. Which was saying something for a 16 yo at the time! Learned to eat all kinds of foods since then, and I know, that is a good thing! Thank you, for an impressive show!
I learned from my good friend Robert Cerny, to eat pickled herring in wine sauce at 12 midnight on new years eve in 1968, for good luck and $ fortune in the coming year. It's worked very well, I am 75 now and have a net worth of over $2M! Try it!
Awesome keep the videos coming to keep us all that can't go out busy
This is an awesome collab! I learned alot from Keith's teachings. I think you guys ought to go troll for salmon together and talk about the differences of methods between kayaking and boating.
That's a good idea!
Awesome job with the net. We dipped for smelt in upstate New York as a kid. Great memories with uncles on the water. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.
Great to see you on your Whaly good show! Thank you!!
Hey Dude, here in Germany we pickle hering and eat it as a salad with cream. Sounds strange but is lovely. When you add beetroot it turns pink. Raw onions and potatoes. Super quick meal.
I have watched both of your channels for awhile now so it was great to see you both do a trip together. Looked like great fun and the Herring looked pretty good to eat as well!! Also, nice to see you still have the Whaly.
Love the banter brothers. Cracked me right up.
Good catch guys! Always nice to get the limit. And enjoy them fresh while you can!
I’m so glad that he has posted another video I like watching the catch and cooks with my nieces and my dad
Lost Anchovy fits Keith to a tee! I think I have fished around you before when I was in California. Love my contacts from the NCKA. Great bunch of guys to hang out with on the water
Thank you sir, Awsome seeing someone else eating them fresh . I always put some aside before I brine them
Awesome Matt when my notification bell came on and seen it's Fisherman's life I immediately stopped what I was doing and turned on the big screen. I believe with this pandemic going on and the price of food skyrocketing some people that's all they can afford to live off the land. Anyways epic video Matt and you stay safe out there and have a blessed day and continue the great video's you do. Aloha from Kansas
Thanks Martin. Always appreciate you!
Nice work mat 👍 love the new Collab still being your self. That's y I can watch you bro you love to fish and help others the man. thanks for the content.
Yes the Whaly is back! Herring is delicious….we have them for breakfast occasionally, salted and dried then fried, accompanied with garlic fried rice and a fried egg. 👍🏽
Mm sounds good!
Nice video Matts, glad you and Chovy had fun in your first collab. We have to do a kayak collab next time with Chovy, Moo, and Fishing247 😀!!!
This just turned my day around
Been subscribed for a long time and haven't commented but I love your videos and this one was awesome! Good luck in the future videos
Thanks for taking me where my wheelchair can't go....fishing with you everyday after work and on weekends. Cheers . Aloha.
Been waiting to see a catch and cook ! Keep going matt
Love these vids man. Even when the fishing isn’t popping where I’m at I know it’s popping on this channel haha
Fishing in the area you’re in makes all the difference. Living in NM is hard especially this winter. But I’m hoping with the improvement such as fish habitats and better quality waters things will change.
Those look delicious to me. Very cool! thanks for posting.
2 Bay Area fishing legends! Awesome video
Used to eat for lunch almost everyday at work, my boss used to make a big deal of the smell, so 1 day i flipped his seat upside down and poured the juice from the fish on the bottom. he never complained again.
Great video! Brings back memories of the 1970's, we used to snag them with a large treble hook, when thousands of Herring spawn at the Coyote Point Park in San Mateo.
Cant wait to see the future videos when you use those for bait, thats if you dont eat ALL of them lol. Great to see TLA in the video, always loved his videos and the knowledge he shares. I would read his blog years ago to learn which tide is best for the different bay species and how I know that today is because of him. Loved this collaboration!
I didn't even know he was doing it for so long and had the blog for 10 plus years. Crazy man! This was one of my favorite collabs
Your videos are stress buster for me. Keep uploading. Lots of love from India 🇮🇳
The spawn in NorCal and the Lost Coast has been very early this year. Glad you’re taking advantage of the free bait.
I’d get on it if I had a freezer in my car im living out of lol
Yes very early. This wasn't even the first! Hopefully there's another one
Thanks for letting me know Matts! You guys were nailing them
I love this show. I'm here in Sacramento but I remember S.F. fishing. Thanks man
I love his " lost anchovy" name.. great collaboration!! totally enjoyed it.
here in the netherlands herring is the most eaten fish in the country. they put them in salted water and just eat them straight out of the barrel
jupp
@Jersey City alot of fish actually, seabass, flounder, cod, are some of the fish that are here alot. Herring is something dutch people eat alot of because it tastes really good! We eat it with union and pickles. Rich in omega 3 and vitamines.
Pickled herring is probably my favorite, absolute awesome
I love pickled Herring. Maybe you could do a CCC on that topic?
Great vid per usual Matts!!!
Too much fun for the both of you.
This is wonderful!
Another awesome video, thanks
Just two dudes united by the same passion. Can't believe i dont pay for such content
I always enjoy your videos, well put together. Tight Line
Another awesome video. Not sure if you knew, but that was Nick Fish on his AI kayak netting right under Spinnaker. I paddled over in the blue kayak when you guys were wrapping it up.
So GRATEFUL to have finally caught a herring spawn.
Love watching your videos but I must say that it's even better seeing it this stuff in person!
Hahah thanks. Yep Nick rolled up all stealthy! Lol great day out there. Glad you got some too#
In the Spring in Michigan the Smelt Run fishing is a fun-time.
Excellent eating, gut them and deep fry. A tasty little fish.
awesome video of netting bait fish from one of my favorite fisherman youtubers
Ive heard of "spot burning". People complaining, about fishing spots, is so overrated. Let people fish and have a good time. Good Vibes, happy fishing, and positive thinking. Fishing wouldn't be called fishing if it was easy, it'll be called catching
Especially in the freaking ocean!!!
great show and I did go to lost anchovy and subscribed to it . i live in bay area for work for about 2and 1/2 years i did go crabbing and fishing in fresh water but had no idea you could do so much in the area . i am form Louisiana and fish hear all the time and crab ,crawfish ,shrimp love the out doors ' thank you guys !!! I watch you and 5 of your friends . if you ever come to the south please let me know !!!!
Good Video 📹 👍. I love ❤️ pickled Herring. YUM 😋 😋 😋
Drowning is biggest safety risk for waterfowl hunters and fishermen on the water- consider making a "no waders" rule on the boat. its one thing to rescue a 200lb person, and a another to try and rescue them with another 200lb of water in their waders.
Yeah that is true. Idk why it didnt even cross my mind that day. I only ever wear pants waders on the boat but that could still be dangerous
Man...I love watching your videos...I started fishing watching your videos and use your tricks and teachings a lot. I hope to one day make my own little videos and give a shout out to your channel...wont be any time soon but who knows...keep em coming brother.
Let me know when you do that!
Yummy; herring is a Swedish staple-fried in butter with mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam💗 or just eaten as a snack, on itself 🙌🏼
We use rye flour as batter!!
Electrical tape weaved around the weights keeps the net from closing too early. As soon as the net hits the water, it starts closing, especially when there is a little tension on the line. I've got one arm and have been throwing nets for 30 years.
Good tip thanks!
Love watching your channel
Thanks bro , another episode as I sit back with my bulletproof coffee it don't get no better......
And Lost Anchovy on the Collab , that's what's up , do more collab's you 2 ..🤝🏼
Spot burning leads to increased pressure on the environment, not just the fish population. It means more trash, more crushed mussels, more plants trampled on, in what maybe was a more pristine spot that fewer, more responsible anglers used. There's plenty of public places the city, county, or state list for beginners to find fishing spots.
That fisherman’s life jacket, though. 🔥🔥🔥
Love the videos man❤️
awesome video as always! you should come down to TN and do some fly fishing for big brown trout and striper!
He seems like a great person to be around
Fishing on the Whaly Boat!! (Thought you may have sold it) I got me one because of this channel....love it!!!
Awesome! We catch freshwater herring in Lake Superior they make good fish tacos. And fish cakes
In the Philippines we dry herring. afterwards you can grill or fry them. but whats best with it is what we call paksiw, it's boiling it with vinegar, ginger and tomatoes until the vinegar is almost in a saucy consistency and the herring bones are soft.. dip with chili lemon and fish sauce..eat it with rice..
I'm surprised that Herring is considered to be a 'bait' fish in the States, as it is a very healthy oily fish to eat. Tthough it has lost popularity since the 1970's here in the UK, herring has often been eaten. When cold-smoked, we call them 'kippers' and again, though they've lost popularity, they are thought of as a breakfast food or tea-time treat. I personally don't like kippers, and have never tried unsmoked herring, but I do know Mum and Dad liked kippers.
Mind you, seeing the size of the first fish you caught, perhaps I shouldn't be surprised at all. The Herring in the UK are only landed if they are at least two or three times that size. As they have a lot of pin bones in them, they need to be a good size to make them a worthwhile fish to prepare and eat!
Believe me, in Seattle herring are very popular, especially among older Scandinavian folks. Ya, sure, you betcha! Lightly grilled over alder to get a bit of smoke. Yum.
In the Netherlands its one of the most common dishes to eat it "soused", which is almost raw. Best with some raw onions.
I. Going to have to try some smoked next. I bet they would be delicious little treats! Just made my mouth water
@@FishermansLife oh hell yeah , smoked with a miso glaze , 🤤😋🤤. Do it for your next episode please 🤝🏼
@@MK-qb5qv I often see something called 'Rollmop' Herring in the chilled fish section in our supermarkets, which I believe is something similar. As I said, herring was once very popular here in the UK, or perhaps I should say England, because I don't know if the other three UK nations have followed the same trend. I believe kippers are still quite popular, as is Herring Roe, but the fresh fish itself isn't eaten so much now, as far as I can tell. I suspect it comes down to a familiar tale: herring was over fished round our shores, the stocks crashed and for some time, Herring wasn't fished to allow their numbers to recover.. By the time they had, a generation had grown up without eating it, and forgotten about it.It can be a fiddly fish to prepare and cook, and being an oily fish, gets strong tasting and 'fishy' as it gets older. These days, people want fish they can just shove in the oven to cook, or better still, get it from the fish and chip shop, and they've lost the taste for Herring and other oily fish...
We used 50/50 cornmeal and flour, just take the head and guts scale them roll in flour/cornmeal mix and shallow fry in oil or butter. Season the mix with your favorite seasoning. Delicious 🙌
Awesome video 👍🏼👍🏼. One question, did you dredge them in the same frying mix or in flour ? Thanks
Dude, pickled herring and fried top shelf action...now for popcorn lol
good catch matt
I think it is awesome when guys share secrets on whatever when it comes to fishing. Because a lot of fishermen are just trying to feed their families. And just trying to catch fish. Love his videos
Did you get the Butter Boat 2.0 back? Love to see it again 👍
Kirk lombards sea foragers guide is one of my favorites
Herring is a delicacy in Northern Europe. The Dutch fur example eat them raw with finely chopped white onions served in something that reminds me of the container a NYC dirty water dog is served in. It's held up by the tail became and bit from the bottom. FRied anchovy in Portuguese dishes are delicious as well! YUMM!
Keep up the good work we all enjoy it
Cool video. I've always wanted to try this.
Loved this one Matt, please do more bait fish catch and cook, but straight fried, salt, pepper, onions white and green, garlic, butter, and few splashes of lime and white vinegar and please tell me how it goes if you try it.
In the village up in Alaska we cook then whole. Scale then and make x’s on the out side skin to allow the bones to get crisp and you don’t notice that the fish has bones when you eat it. Nice to see other still eating herring. Right on man.
Herring (nishin) used to run in large numbers in Otaru, Hokkaido near Sapporo. They barreled them and used them for fertilizer. These days the runs are small but fresh nishin is a wonderful sushi fish. I did have a frozen nishin for breakfast and it wasn't nearly as good. I also tried nishin sushi at the airport...also not as good as the really fresh sushi-ya in Otaro. Im a fan and intend on catching fresh herring in WA state soon. Love your show.
This is awesome. Where's this at? Videos are great. Thank you.
These simple videos are always the best videos. Nothing better then catch clean simple videos. I think a lot of CZcamsrs are forgetting this. I like the surf perch catch and cook shore fishing videos more then the exotic marlin fishing videos.
(Ps I like everything Matts does just like the simple ones more)
Man, those looked so good!! You wouldn't even have to ask me twice! I'd eat em' in a heartbeat!!
Good catch, I'm glad you got a decent meal out of it. up here in Maine they sell cold smoked herring at some of the local stores. It is very salty and has a strong flavor. You have to eat it in moderation because one fillet contains enough sodium to make most people sick. I respect you guys for demonstrating that any fish can taste good if you know the right way to cook it. The areas where I fish contain an abundance of Atlantic mackerel. They make great striper bait, but no one around here would even consider eating them. unfortunately people don't realize that mackerel are a good eating fish if you know the right way to cook them. The trick is to keep them fresh. Soon as you land them you need to clean them out and throw them on ice because if you don't they will spoil. It's also important to peel the skin off before cooking otherwise it will taste like a bait fish. I'm sure the same would apply to herring as it is a soft fleshed fish that is prone to spoiling quickly. I love your videos and I look forward to seeing more content in the future.
try a japanese style preparation of mackeral...and eat with rice...it rocks.
This guys laugh is the best
LOVE HERRINGS. It can be cooked in so many ways and TASTE FANTASTIC !!!!!!! Use to get $5 per bucket ~~~~
Awesome video! I have to ask though, we’re you using that knife backwards?
HERRRRRIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGG TIME!!!!!!!! GOOD VIDEO BRO
What size net were you throwing? I’m new to cast nets and would like some advice for a good one to use from the shore that will sink quick enough but also will be easy to spread.
Thanks for all that you do. Your videos are always interesting.
Up here in the North East ( Long Island) we usually catch them by pole from local piers with sabiki rigs. Worst season this year as the Atlantic Herring fishery is facing major issues.
im liking that new fishermens life waterproof jacket tho! nice to see t.l.a. out there with ya!
Thanks! Making some changes here and there. Probably going to do a camo color in the end. Hopefully they see the light of day!
Hey Matts! Now I'm craving ANY fried fish. Made Cajun Salmon last night. (store bought cause I live in Tucson AZ ;)
My next move will likely be Montana.
Hope your mom is doing well?
Many Blessings
Congratulations Matt's on the herrings. I still can feel the rush. It was so surreal when TLA and I got them a few days before this trip. Nice to see you and TLA got together.
It was a great trip. Had lots of fun and learned a ton!
Glad to see you guys enjoying herring as a food fish. It has a bad reputation for being fishy and not freezing well, perpetuated mostly by people who have never tried it. Breading and frying is a crowd-pleaser, and it also makes great ceviche, believe it or not.
This is what we do every year with the white bass run in March - May where I live. Clean and cook them up the same way.
Hi Matts....my granma used to scale the herrings...sprinkle red pepper pwder, turmeric, salt ginger garlic and 'curry leaves' and then deep fry them....try that someday!
Oooh that sound like a huge simple upgrade to my friend herring
@@FishermansLife save you the trouble of cleaning all you need is scale and gut
Atlantic herring is fattier then the pacific herring and therefore better suited for raw eating. I grew up in Holland and had no idea it was raw till my mom told me. After getting past that idea I went right back to enjoying them green herring. Pickled herring is also good if raw herring is not available. Great video.
I also love fried herring. I wish my husband would catch some then I can cook it on my channel👍
Never knew people cook Herring, learned something new.
Here in the Netherlands i dont know beter than eating them raw.
Love your vids man.👍
German pickled herring also rules as a cooling summer dish.
Great in spaghetti to... Omg drooling
