- Sony A7C Get This LENS Now! For stable footage | Sony 24-105 f4 IS
In this video we are going to test the Sony A7C with two lenses. The Sony 16-25mm f2.8 without Image stabilization and the Sony 24-105mm f4 with optical Stabilization.
While the Sony A&c features IBIS we don’t have Active Image stabilization which makes it hard to get smooth shots when there is heavy motion.
So I’ve tested several methods to see if it’s even possible to clog with the sony A7C without getting shaky footage and came out with the conclusion that the Sony A7C performs best with stabilized lenses like the Sony 24-105 f4 IS than using a non stabilized lens with A7C IBIS.
Out of all the lens options that I have I was able to get decent stabled footage with the Sony A7C paired with the Sony 24-105mm f4 IS.
This disables the IBIS from your Sony A7C and only uses the lens image stabilization.
I want to try next the Zeiss 16-25 f4 OSS as that lens is also image stabilized.
But I feel that the range of the Sony 24-105 F4 IS is a better match for the Sony A7C as the only lens you’ll need.
Also the Sony 24-70mm f4 is probably the first lens you should buy if you don’t own any Sony lens
The Sony A7C has been marketed heavily as a blogging camera and I think that the kit lens that came with it should been image stabilized in order to get a stable performance right out of the gate with your Sony A7C. - Zábava
Which one do you think perfrom best. Lens with OSS or Sony A7C IBIS? Let me know 👇
Always 24-105 f4 👌👌
The lens with oss will perform better than ibis because the stabilizer in a lens are dedicated to the lens focal aperture zoom settings. In body stabilization cannot know each camera zoom si it is all purpose and cannot compensate accurately. With a7c it is better to take the 24-105 with oss than a 16-35 with ibis. The stabilization will be better with 24-105
why not the 16-35 f4 OSS lens? you can use that one with IBIS in addition to the OSS as well
@@Luke-vg7ut I'd like to see a comparison with both IBIS and OSS turned on VS just either.
Super useful review. Thanks!
Great test, thanks! Have both of these lenses and I noticed too that 24-105 is pretty good at stabilization on A7C.
Thanks! That's a very interesting test. Do you know if with the A7SIII you still can't use OSS on the lens and ibis on the camera at the same time?
perfect analysis, thanks
Wow Thank you for all your hard work and efforts saving me time and in line to get the best lens for my A7C
in truth it doesn't work just like that ... when you activate the stabilization on the lens (24 105) automatically the stabilization on the camera is also activated but you cannot control this option directly from the camera but you can only from the lens ... practically when you activate the stabilization on the lens you activate also ibis on the camera and if you deactivate it You deactivate it from both ... they work together ... it is specified in the instruction book...!
Correct!! 👍🏻
so does that mean you cannot have the OSS on with IBIS off and use the catalyst browse?
@@jrwnfilms3350 I to want to know this
@@Ray-hw4ig in my experience, i get jello effect / corner wobles with catalyst if there is oss. I only tried it once when i went to a camera store to try this lens. Took 4 footages, best result is stab off, shutter cranked up. Not extensive test.
I was told any forms of stabilization will mess up gyro data.
I ended up getting sigma 28-70 😬
Awesome! Nice educational video as always! Very good sound quality too!
Glad you enjoy it.
Well done Gaston - your right the 24 105 does a pretty solid job.
I think so too
Great video, I have the A6600 and was thinking of this exact setup but no one did any videos that I could find.
Hello, can you tell me if Catalyst works with OIS enabled in the Sony 24-105 f4 lens?
Great comparison. This definitely sold me on the F4 zoom vs the 2.8 without stabilization. Thank you for doing this.
Thank you. Glad I was able to help
Great video the IS on the 24-105 really helped with the stabilisation.
It did
Can you use the gyro catalyst stabalization in post combined with the oss stabalization? I wonder if any issues / artifacts with combining?
Great test, thank you! But how about OSS in lens in combine with the IBIS+active steady shot on A7S iii? Does it work this way or shuts down like on A7C?
It works great
Hi Gaston, thanks to share your interesting video. But I don't understand well because my english is not good. I'd like to know: if I buy the Sony A7 IV and Sony 24-105 f4, can both the stabilizations of the camera and lens to work in synergy? For me it is very important to know it because I make all my documentaries freehand and without tripod. I'm afraid Sony is not good for me. Thank you!
Hey buddy. I've got this lens on my A7C now and I can't find a setting to turn off Ibis and turn on OSS. Does it automatically prioritise lens stabilisation?
Thanks :)
What about the 16-35 f4 oss . Also wish Sony would make the strap holders attached so they can't move and hit the camera while using the microphone built in.
wow thanks for this information
You are welcome
Great test. Thank you! Does the ibis of the a7siii turn off with the 24-105 oss activated as well?
Hmmm good question
Hey! This is great.
I own an EOS R and I'm thinking of finally making the switch to Sony with the A7C.
Any chance you'd have access to an EOS R to make a comparison? Since they're comparables at almost the same price, it'd be interesting to see. Or maybe the R6.
I do have an EOS R. I may make the comparison.
The 24-105 does the best job with OSS on compared to your other tests. It took the jitters out of the image. You looked more natural walking, you movement was smoother.
I have the A7 III and Sony 24-105mm lense. Should I use both IBIS and lens OSS shooting video, or just OSS using A7 III? Wasn't sure if using only OSS pertains to A7C. Your videos are very helpful.
I believe the lens controls the IBIS and they work in conjunction
for A7C photo taking purpose, which len do you recommend for a new hand? He perfer to use it for Portrait photography and travel. thanks a lot.
If I’ll be traveling with this camera I bring the Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8 or the Sony 50mm macro f1.8, the 85mm f1.8. I need to have a zoom with me abs that would be the 24-105 f4 IS or the 24-70mm f2.8
Thats cool you are reviewing and suggesting lenses for the camera you are giving away. Will be very helpful for who ever gets it. Love that 24 to 105. In the comparison shots next to the 16mm vs the 24 the 16mm didnt look that much wider so the 24 seemed wide enough for vlogging in case i would use it as my one and only lens to start with
I have a Zeiss 16-35 f4 OSS and 24-70 OSS coming soon
@@GastonShutters nice, i dont have any yet. Just trying to choose one that can be good for everything. Leaning towards the sony 24-105 f4 since ill be able to afford just one lens. I dont want the sigma 24-70 Hear to many people having issues with it, there are some bad copies out there maybe so will see if there is a sale for the sony on Black Friday.
Spoiler alert. I have a video coming with the Zeiss lenses and the Sony 24-105 f4 OSS is better optically with less artifacts than the Zeiss lenses
@@GastonShutters nice! The 16-35 G master sounds good but man its so expensive
On other a7's like the A7RII and A7RIV or A9 those bodies have hybrid stabilization that allow the lens OSS and IBIS to work together. I am curious why you don't think the A7C will not do this? From a Dustin Abbott review on the 24-105 lens "The OSS (Optical Steady Shot) works in conjunction with the camera’s sensor shift IBIS to provide superior performance, and it seems to work well in practice". So is this a limitation of the A7C? Did you check with Sony?
It may work together however the effect is minimal. When you connect a lens you cannot longer control ibis from the camera only from the lens. So I assume that if both ibis can work together I should be able to turn on and off the one from the camera and on / off the one from the lens.
you cannot turn on IBIS on and OSS on at the same time?
IMO Both the audio from the ZV1 and A7C seem so sound great at that close range, perfect for vlogging, I actually had not seen anyone test the mic of the A7C.
For IBIS it does seem to help a little, mostly with the roll between steps but not as much as the OSS. The OSS really is night and day difference, it even helps alot with the shakyness of every step!.
The other variable would be the Gyro data, since it probably doesnt let you record it with the OSS either, the other option I see is using the 16-25 at 16mm and cropping to roughly 24mm. That would be the strongest contender Vs the 24-105 for Vlogging. Like: what do you need, more light? more zooming capabilities? less work is editing afterwards...?
For me it would definetly be the 24-105 for vlogging and all around.
Great demo/comparison, but this type of videos make me want to put money into the best lens for Micro 4/3 ( 10-25mm f/1.7) instead of leaving my LUMIX G9 for a full frame camera. The IBIS is on a whole different level. Yeah FF will give me better lowlight, but for my content I need IBIS more than low light performance
this combo looks beast
I love it
Always nice
Thanks
Exactly the video I was looking for! I am buying the A7C, and couldn’t decide between Tamron 28-75 and 24-105. I am going for the Sony!
The 28-70 is faster at F2.8 and lighter. But the 24-105 has IS abs further reach. Maximum aperture F4
the a7c also supports gyro data and you can stabilize automatically with Catalyst, you should have done a comparison with that vs the IBIS and OSS. it works surprisingly well in a lot of cases.
software? u mean massive crop, fov reduction and reencoding? who would do that? either hardware can do or t's a loss. a7* simply can't stabilize, with none of the lenses or ibis, and the video proves it.
Thanks for the tests Gaston. Now regarding OSS...does the OSS on 16-35mm f4 also provide the same stability as the 24-105?
I would assume so. If haven’t tested the Zeiss yet. But I’m assuming being wider it may be better but I don’t know what the issue is with warping artifacts on the edges.
Gaston Shutters thanks Gaston. Hmm...warping on the widest end on the 16-35mm...u bring up a good point I never thought about when thinking about this lens. I think the warping may be due to the OSS itself. Because IRRC, it is stabilization that causes those jello or warping artifacts in video for ultrawide angles.
@@dude1diligence I know this is late, but I find it does. I use this setup 16-35mm F4 and a7iii and a lot it works extremely well as far being stable in the wide angles. I do not see tons of jellowing.
BEN HOWARD appreciate it, Ben. 👍🏼
What do think of the stabilization performance when this lens is used with a Sony A1?
Wow. This is super helpful info. Thanks Gaston! I was pretty sure the A7C was going to be my next camera but knowing that IBIS and OSS can’t be combined changes everything. I wouldn’t be using it for vlogging, I would love to see some handheld B-roll in another video!
Agree the OSS is better.
Question please: does the A7III have the same problem (IBIS and OSS can’t be combined)? Thx!
yes A7iii same story. Sony has terrible IBIS period. But no IBIS will replace gimbal or slider hardware
@@GastonShutters thx. Good to know. Currently shoot Canon but was ready to switch to Sony... still think I will as a gateway towards the A7SIII but Canon might fix things with future R series cams. Cheers!
@@badfishinghabit5458 I ENJOY MY R5 A LOT. Zero issue on all the video modes i need. Which are better than any of the features of the Sony A7C!
I can see some confusion here. When you have a Sony camera with IBIS and Sony lens with OSS, these two systems are working together to even better stabilise the image.
The statement that IBIS is getting disabled when you have OSS lens is not true.
Watch first minutes of the bellow video:
m.czcams.com/video/DgbXp3-sdpI/video.html
@@pawelmod3292 thx. I ended up getting the A7C and love it so far. As it turns out, there are so few FF lenses with OSS in the Sony ecosystem, it’s a moot point. That’s one thing Canon seems to be doing better than Sony with their RF lenses.
Hi! I would really love to see the same test actualized: Sony a7cII + Sony 24-105 vs Sony 20-70 with active steadyshot on/off. This could also include third party zoom lenses. There is so much misconseption on YT around the topic. Thank You for your Work.
Noted!
I have A7C and I have IBIS turned on only for photo mode. Video mode is OFF, since it is useless, but would provide better metadata for Catalyst to stabilize in post if needed. Also, I prefer not to walk while taking videos and just pan up/down left-right, so the footage is quite stable. BTW, I was able to balance A7C on the smallest gimbal Crame M2 with a 28mm f/2 equivalent lens such as a 24mm f/1.8 APC lens as well as with a 10-18mm Sony APC lens.
agreed OSS did good job on 24-105 but felt like it struggle with focusing. for me 16-35 looks good and sharp. but 24-105 with OSS seems more stable.
👍
The A7C IBIS is useless. Basically no difference at all. The OSS looks a better option. Sony really needs to improve its stabilization.
Thanks for the video man!!!
how to turn oss on but no ibis ?
What about the 16-35 f4, that would have been a better comparison to the 16-35 f2.8?
I have it. Found a deal at Best Buy will be reviewing it and comparing it
Nice video 👍🏼👍🏼
thank you bud. Glad you like it
Can you combine IBIS inside sony 7c and OSS inside sony 24-105 f4 ?
Apparently yes
Tengo la A7C y con estabilizador activado se mueve mucho y es difícil hacer algo en post ( por qué genera movimientos extraños al estabilizar). Con el lente Tamron 28/75mm 2.8
Por que ese lente no tiene optical estabilización.
Well that's a lot of walking 😅 24-105 just works gem on this a7c.. The way u held it, it seems the body and weight distribution doesn't interrupt much into shakes that can come more from hand held.. Another informative video 👌
Thanks 🙏. Glad you like it
......how about IBIS + OSS ?????
I liked the a7c with the 24-105 mm f4 lens better because it has the oss option which i liked
Do you think the 24-70 f4 OSS would be just as good?
Yeah the Zeiss is an option too but I prefer to get that additional reach since the Zeiss also caps at f4
Do you work there? Dark lab? Tattoo supplies?
I thought, just like every youtuber says about sony cameras and lenses, that the oss of stabilized lenses and the ibis worked together to give the best results possible.
So is it just this lens or this camera or every sony camera and lens that disables ibis when you have the optical oss?
Pls answer
Not sure about what goes inside the camera but it seems like the lens takes over. But would have to confirm that by doing some more research
@@GastonShutters thank you very much for responding
i’m considering buying this combo so if you discover some more info please let me know
@@GastonShutters Bro you are the only one on the internet that has pointed out that this camera can’t combine it’s ibis with the lens oss so please check if with the a7c and 24-105 can work together to provide double stabilization at least in photo mode, because you already said in the video that for movies it can’t
@@campa_t I believe he is incorrect and they work together, you just cant activate only OSS or only IBIS, theyre either both on or both off
@@GastonShutters When an OSS lens paired with Sony 5-axis IBIS, the lens handles 2 axes (yaw+pitch) while the camera handles 3 axes (roll+X+Y).
Interesting that it doesn't let you use both ibis and oss, I wonder why that is? I have the a6600 with the 18-135 oss and it seems comparable to the stabilization from the 24-105 👍 I guess if I was making the jump to the a7c this would be the lens to get👍 Great info, thanks! 👌
Hey, is that case happen to your a6600 ibis + oss can’t used at the same time?
Would be nice if both ibis and lens oss worked together. It would probably be really smooth. Idk why sony doesn't really care about ibis like other companies.
With IBIS off footage as expected is shaky, with IBIS on footage is about 20% better which means still too shaky and bad, A7C IBIS is disappointing! With lens OSS you get better footage for sure, not really good but better then before without a doubt. Would love to see what it would look after you run it through the program and see how was the Gyro Data Stabilization.
☝️
🤔🤔🤔 Imo the camera ibis does help a lot man, maybe cause now I kinda know where to look at for changes haha but yeah it does way way better with the lense OSS 👍
Yeah.
Sony a7c IBIS has less shake but compare to 24-105 f4 OSS it like you using active stabilizer and i prefer to have OSS over the IBIS😁
Yeah the lens with OSS killed the IBIS from the A7C
What do you think about the Tamron 17-28mm 2.8
Havent tested that lens but supper weird focal length not very versatile.
@@GastonShutters I see because that’s the lens I’m thinking of getting because the Sony lens are way to expensive for me
That’s the closest to a 16-35 but not even. If you don’t need to be that wide maybe you can consider the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8
@@GastonShutters I was thinking more for like vlogs
Then yes. 17-28 better wide range
You have a nice studio ......
Appreciate it! Lots of work when in to make it happen
Because sometimes i used this video fitur, i prefer to 16-35 lens. But if i use video fitur in 50% up, i will choose 24-105 if enough lighting in situation. 😍💥💥💥
No need to buy another lens. Use the GYRO option in the A7C. ECO friendly. You just use it in post. Remember though to put the IBIS in off.
I’m really surprised to see that the ibis doesn’t work with OSS - is this a bug that can be fixed in a firmware update? I’ve never heard of this on any other Sony camera before. Everyone always says that having lens and body stabilization is the best combo. The 24-105 definitely looked the best but these are all passable for casual content in my opinion.
Yeah I thought the same but I think is a bit of a gimmicky claim as you see bare improvement when using the IS from the lens. It could be that it does some sort of sensor/ lens stab but the difference is barely noticeable
It seems unlike Canon r6 r5,only one of the stabilization works in a7c...incamera or inlens
I’m hearing mix messages but one thing for sure is that it’s no where near canon or the A7Siii
Why is the ibis so bad in sony cameras ? I seen a iphone 12 pro vs sony mirrorless video and the ibis on the iphone was better . Idk why sony doesnt put active ibis in every camera .
I guess no space to move the sensor around as the cameras are very compact
Guess a gimbal would help?
Canon rf 15-35 have oss or not
It does.
24~105 OSS very good
Yep
it sucks you can't use the lens and the body together but lens alone was good enough for most work I'd say
Of course the 24-105 is better stabilised, but I guess A7C IBIS would be enough for hand held SHOTS, for those who are looking for Photography.
Yeah for slow planing shots and steady hold the ibis is ok
Why not: Sony A7C and lens stabilization..., It’s not possible?
yes it is especially when the new version when it comes out. Check my updated video that I launched last week about new rumors specs
Lens with OSS definitely way better than IBIS. Sony should have excluded their IBIS and price the camera cheaper.
hehehehe
The ibis is good for hand held slow movement. Not for vlogging. :/
If I should get it but it for me then
Stabilization still sucks with or without the OSS lens and with IBIS on or off, Sony stabilization has always been horrible so you are forced to use a gimbal. They should take lessons from Panasonic their stabilization is way better but my gear is all Sony.
Good enough for panning. That’s it. Not an action camera.
@@GastonShutters I never said it was an action camera, but for the price they are charging they could have at least implemented a better IBIS why not? Panasonic does it the proper way and for cameras much less than this one.
Dopee, but not to comptact by the way😂😂
hehehe. not so bad.
It is normal. Lens stabilization is better than In-Body stabilization, because the stabilizer component have been dedicated to the lens focal, aperture and can be really precisely tweaked. In -body cannot know every single lens that exist, also it is even more obvious with telephoto lens where the sensor movement would not be able to compensate the big movements.
In Body stabilization are bad. i don't trust it. If i buy the A7c I would buy the 24-105 which is the perfect all around lens for this camera. And if money is not a issue, a 20 MM 1.8 for astro photography and 100-400MM for widlife photography would be the perfect kit with a teleconverter 2.0x.
Thank you for your informative reply.
24-105 OSS is way better than A7C IBIS!
Yep
That’s a honking big piece of glass. I don’t get the value proposition of mirrorless... what you save on flange setback you pretty much lose in the lens. You can’t beat the physics.
So IBIS doesn't do anything
They were better off not even including the IBIS at all in this camera & pricing it at $1500.
It's actually useful for handheld BRoll where you are panning or zooming. but the moment you introduce complex motion it sucks.
@@GastonShutters fair point
1) Buy small, light camera
2) Buy huge, heavy lens
3) ???
4) Profit?
Jk i have both aswell lol
I thought the IBIS was a lot better.
Yeah it’s just decent.
@@GastonShutters better than not using IBIS is what I meant.
For sure man
Ibis is good for lenses with no is...so you can adapt both is or no is lenses obviously. Sony vs canon...sony confusing non touch menu no flip or rare and expensive equipment but no limit record and canon crop with 30 minute record along with ibis rare but touch ease of use flip screen color science focus wide selection lenses and support. Canon is better deal. Sony great for video but disappoint..especially lousy no flip screen. A7c is great specs but bigger version be better for longer lenses it suited for travel not pro shots.
Probably still safer to put it on a small gimbal... the OSS will always do a better job, but I think the OSS is only 3 way stabilized, not 5 like IBIS.
Gimbal is always the answer... unless the Sony CatalystBrowse will get better with time... then that will be a huge blow on gimbal makers lol.
Coming soon... 3 reasons why gimbal makers hate this company! :D
hahah true. Nothing surpasses good gimbals
IBIS on the A7C is shit...
Did Sony Re-engineer it very poorly for the slightly small body, or is it just a fake?
I mean the body isn't really that much smaller - it just lacks the big EVF, but the body is just as thick as any other A7 model.
Basically, it can't compete with the ZV-1
IBIS for video looks terrible.
That outro song sounds way too much like peters intro....
🔈
Wrong title. Should be 24-105.
good catch thanks!
The best difference is called 'Use a Gimbal'.
Haha. For sure !
more primes, zooms are boring.
👌
IBIS is shockingly bad. With OSS it’s not much better. Sony stabilisation isn’t really usable for video.
