Dodge Caravan: Leaking Exhaust Flange (Rusted Out Bolts)
Vložit
- čas přidán 9. 01. 2023
- In this video I bring you along as I fix a ladies loud exhaust on her Chrysler Town and Country. A visual inspection revealed a rust out flange bolt creating the leak. It is an easy fix assuming you have a torch.
-Enjoy!

Eric, you can make a simple video of you battling two stuck nuts entertaining and enjoyable. Whatever you make from YT per video is nothing compared to the priceless fun and knowledge we all get out here.
Spot welded nuts that you can't get to are the ones that break off easily.
#truth
Superseded by one’s that are stripped out
So true
For sure, that and the inaccessible caged nuts that are contained by the weakest metal cage known to man
bonus points for the ones for lower control arms that are inside the crossmember!
I never thought I'd watch a video of a mechanic burning nuts for 15 minutes, you know why he's so popular because he is a nice guy and honest and people see that
I'm not going to lie, when I first read your comment, I thought it said blowing nuts 😂😂😂. I yelped out loud
Mrs. O real good to you. She takes good care of you
Mrs. O is a good woman for sure, and you are a good man. Ya'll are what a relationship should be
Glad you were VICtorious in getting the nuts free. As someone who has DIY'ed a flange like that, it was a lot of Dremel work.
I did one recently and drilled the bolts out. They were mostly gone and just rusty metal blocking the holes. What a nightmare, had to wedge the flange in place, drill it while using a 3ft bar pushing on the back of the drill for leverage. Never again haha.
I look forward to watching your videos every day
"Quarter after 8 and I already have the torch out."
It's gonna be a great day!!
Every time I see one of the rusted-out buckets you work on, I remember why I don't miss Indiana. Good work on your behalf as always.
...or me Minnesota. A great state to be FROM 😏😎👍🏻
....or me Michigan. Now a "Florida Man".
@@gregeconomeier1476 Mississippi for me. Be well.
Here in upstate NY we have plenty of snow and salt and rust. However, we don't really get big tornadoes or hurricanes or earthquakes, so it's not all bad. It's the oppressive government and taxes here that's really killing us. Geographically, it's quite nice.
@@Krankie_V Sorry Hoss, but y'all keep voting in those politicians. I don't feel bad for you at all. Change the folks in Albany if you don't like the way they run New York. Just saying.
Man I tell you what Eric. You have got me loving Astro tools. My in laws got me the 52SLC for Christmas and it's the best light I've ever had. And I've ordered a bunch more of their tools, and went up to Summit racing to get a back probe kit and other stuff and got more astro tools there. It's a 2 hour drive to summit for me but it's well worth it. And I'm now super knowledgeable on circuits and how they work and testing them and using my alldata for OEM info. Thank you sir, you are a godsend and a damn awesome dude!
Get the Astro Nano sockets, while you're at it. Game changing in tight spaces.
@@brandonsimunac bought them at summit the other day!
I've said it in multiple videos, but It goes along with your statement, sir. That Eric belongs teaching more than running his own shop. His value to others, "in my opinion" would be better served, creating more top quality mechanics like himself. Hopefully, if he retires, he will give it some thought. I mean, he's already teaching people through CZcams, so a classroom should be easy peazy.
My main complaint is that the battery isn't designed to be replaceable. I've got a cheaper Braun version, which uses a standard lithium battery that can swapped in like 10 seconds. I actually keep a couple on a charger so I can just swap them out for nonstop use.
Oh Eric...Vic is an awesome helper when it comes to exhaust work, he always brings the mediation team of Oxygen and Acetylene with him. The mediation event is usually brief and Vic always wins!
Eating up torch gases... I was starting to doze off
That coffee mug is so true. Everyone thinks the problem they have is more important than what anyone else has and YOU need to fix it now.
I like to say your piss poor planning does not make it my emergency.
Eric O and Vic are the man.
Keep it coming
SMA
Question from a noob... how come the oxy doesn't melt the flange too?
I used a map gas torch and a stripped nut remover hammered on the red hot nut and the air hammer and got mine off my Hondooo they were not welded but they were welded on by rust.
Loved “It’s a quarter after eight and I’ve already got the torch out” aka the gas axe
Damn, you are making bank with all these Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep vehicles! Pretty soon, you will be able to leave PRNY for sunnier, warmer, and rust free days!
These dodge vans are by far the most common vehicle on the road in these parts (south Ontario) but not alot of word on their problems. These things must be the Toyota of the north and just keep on ticking
You did that so quickly that I would just bring it in to you to do that thing you do so well!
8:15 AM, and the torch is out………It’s going to be a gooood day, or “🎶there’s a hot time in the old town tonight🎶.😳😀
@13:14 I love that cup!!! Where can I buy one?? Eric O, you are not just an excellent mechanic, but you are also a great diagnostician!! Not just your average Parts thrower!!!
Mrs. O, you have a rare gem there! Mr. O, you have a rare gem there! Two rare gems in one little town in the Peoples State of New York?? Makes one want to move there!! God Bless you two!!! 😄😄😄
BTW, I hit on your merch link and was saddened to not find that cup!!😒😒😒
Love how you always take the time to do a professional job, even on a little job like this.
Eric you jinx yourself when you said its going to be a quick easy job. Great channel , keep up the good work!
GOD Pray for the Old Chrysler and Dodge products. 😬👍 I got Upgraded into a Dodge Caravan down in Florida and it was a Nice Solid Ride Vs. Crappy Cavalier.🤪
11:40 How many times has someone gone to a dishonest shop, only to have your nuts cut off? Nice, honest work, Eric.
Blue wrench spoken here. Depending on what you drive, ramps or jack stands can get you high enough to access most exhaust parts.
I’ve used a die grinder to remove the ruminates of the spot welded nuts. As much as I hate Harbor Freight, they sell pneumatic right angle die grinders for $25 on sale.
Since Eric asked, As a home DIY'er, I would use a die grinder and a carbide burr, and grind off the vestiges of the old bolt and nut.
Gee. That was a hard nut to crack. Luckily, you have Mrs. O. to calm you down. Enjoy your tea. Thanks for sharing! Stay healthy!
Liked this video before I even watched it because I already knew it was going to be good, as usual. Great content as always!
A step drill works well to clean up the hole, or even delete the nut if you have room to get to it.
And 3 sets of hands
I've got a Vic just like yours, useful tool in my chest for over 40 years, thanks for your efforts🤗😎🤗😎
No torch option is just cut the bolt, then the non-fixed flange as long as that is the one with the welded nuts - then fit a 2 piece repair flange, it gets around the lack of torch / welder especially if the flange is corroded to the point it no longer identifies as being suitable to hold your exhaust together.
Glad to see a "simple" job is sometimes not simple even for you.
More please young man !
I'm a DYIer and my vocabulary helps me a lot!
I love how aggressive you are with the torch😂 dealing with the same thing on my 13 town and country. Good to know it's not a horrible Job to fix
One of my favorites is watching you make these PITA rusted bolts cry uncle! Haha, I need one of these torches soon...for science purposes
Amazing video Mr. O !
Your Tundra looked great with the fluid film, I guess the stuff works
The torch skill flexes never disappoint to entertain me, don't worry next one I'll prob see you repair the threads on a bolt with old Vic's laser-like precision
I like these easy repairs and your chatting about it 🙂 You should make a day at the shop, what is happing during a day...
Now I understand the fascination of using the torch. Everytime is like the fourth of July... sparklers everywhere!
Love the coffee mug Mrs O brought you. “Let me just drop everything and fix your shit”
Always handy to have a blue tip 9/16 in the shop.
Also comes in Metric.
I love your channel. All the cars look way worse than my own two decades old beater. That's kind of satisfying, in a way.
Torch remains undefeated. Nice mug!
Gotta love the mug. I can see why it's your favorite !!!! Be safe.
You are very good at getting Victor started.
I use a shaded face shield when I work with "Victoria". It helps to "save face."
Best line ever.."well it can't be tight if it's liquid..well damn maybe it can be!" Lol
Been taking a few old school square nuts off my restoration project. Like you said, a dremel tool you can cut it 4 times and twist each spot weld loose. Not optimal unless that's the only way. If I had a torch I would have 6 holes to choose from when I bolted it back together.
Great video Eric. Nice welding technique
I always learn every time I watch your Vids! Thx
Considering the lack of rust I think it's 409 stainless. It's magnetic, isn't shiny like 304, but it takes heat pretty well and resists corrosion. My Nissan has 409 exhaust tubing but in their infinite wisdom, they used plain steel flanges and fasteners. The flange at the back by the muffler rotted out a couple years ago so I replaced it with a coupling and U clamps, but I spent a better part of New Year's weekend under my car fixing what I thought was a blown out doughnut gasket, turns out the flange rotted out and broke free from the pipe.
The soft glow on the vehicle when you light the torch off camera. Relaxing…
Nothing like an early morning flamethrower session.
Alas, circumstances have me a day behind on some of my favorite channels, so I'm late to the party on this one. Thanks as always, Eric!!
DIYer here. Dremel with the small tungsten carbide bit did the job for me. It was not a fast process but it did work.
Victor for the win - thank you!
Eric, your skill with that torch is amazing!
Paul (in MA)
tea up.....lovely..cant beat a cup of tea...good job on the exhaust Eric.
Loved the cup by the way, isn't that the gist of every mechanics life. At least in the western world I suppose.
Small or large, you always do quality work!
Nice repair Eric, and a cup of tee in a " let me just drop everything and fix your shit"
life is good!
Speaking of nuts and bolts, tractor supply is my favorite place to pick up grade 8 nuts and bolts like that, much cheaper than my local hardware stores and big box stores.
Big box store stainless steel bolts are typically 18-8 stainless unless otherwise noted. 18-8 is soft and rusts just about as fast as a grade 5 bolt.
No reason to use grade 8 bolts for exhaust work.
I purchase boxes of bolts monthly from boltdepot. They’re about 1/3 of the prices of the big box stores.
@@gungadinn I don't know, I've had a different experience up here on the Maine coastline. 18-8 stainless steel hasn't rusted on me yet when used outdoors or under a car. I used some on a heatshield on my old subaru and while they did get dull, they were still rust-free after 3-4 winters. A clear or yellow zinc bolt would never be able to do that.
I just said grade 8 since that's what he used in the video, and honestly they're not much more expensive when you buy grade 8 vs grade 5 by the pound at tractor supply.
Your torch skills are legendary! If there were an award for torch achrobatery it would be all you for gold silver and platinum my friend
Hello Eric, you are the master of the torch. I remember when I subscribed to your channel and you where doing the studs into the cylinder head. You are definetily the master of torch !!!!
Little buggers just didn’t want to cooperate! Vic and big nasty took care of it. Nice!
What a precision with the flame...You are more a doctor, than a mechanic Sir.
Here in Florida they don’t fall apart that often, so no problem.
One of my favorite Eric-isms. "It can't get stuck if it's liquid."
Worked at a muffler shop back in the 80's. Still have scars from hot metal going down my shirt. Happened 3 or 4 times. As far as a DIY project, I would have cut off the bolt remnants then drill out the the stuff in the nuts. I would leave the old nuts and install new nuts on top of them.
Clearly a Midas touch 🤭🤫🤷♂️😎😂
Too much work for that job. Perfect job in the video.
Yes have done an over the axel rear pipe with no lift bloody nightmare lol but couldn't afford to take to a garage at the time. Another great vid
Troubles and solutions thank you for the insite on determination enjoyed the video very much.
Awesome video especially when Vic comes to help
The Ole Lady’s Avenger is just about ready for the same treatment. I was admiring them last time I was under there.
Thanks Eric and Vic great video for our viewing experience!
Always interesting to see a solution to a problem work out satisfactorily. Would be better if the problem didn't exist at all.
Happy Tuesday Mr O and family!
Wow, I did one of these just today. Bolts were in the same shape pretty much. I had to change the pipe behind it with the flex joint in it as well. Fun stuff.
Morning Eric 0 😊 Great tips and tricks as always 🤣 lovely seeing the lovely Mrs O especially bringing you a brew lol 😆😘🏴
Don't feel bad Eric. Couple of years ago did a full system on one for a gentleman. A week later it was sitting parked at a curb in the business district of St. Louis, Mo. Local bad driver boy hit it, knocked it over the curb into a store and totaled it. All the shiny new exhaust looked sad but some of it still had part tape still in place just a little heat discolored. I felt bad for the owner.
It seems your esses are back to normal. Good job!
Eric O.
Your getting to the level of Scotty Kilmer.
Nice to watch good techs at work.
Thanks man..
Almost impossible to work on exhaust systems in the rust belt, I lived there for over 25 years! Love that torch! You make it look so easy, or VICKIE does!
Your torch skills are very impressive!
Yeah, definitely jealous.
Always nice to see Mrs. O.
Got to love the hot wrench, / gas axe.
NPR- Ivan would be proud!
Using the Hot Wrench like an artist!
Great video! I absolutely love the Gulf hat! Awesome
Great content, I've seen a lot of these break, after jacking around trying to remove the welded nuts, I've found it easier and less time-consuming to heat and extract the broken bolt, then heat and remove the bolt that isn't broke. If the threads are messed up drill a 3/8 hole through and bolt it up.
You weild that thar flamethrowerlike @icweld! Nice job Eric!
still love your honesty thanks
Please do a video on changing out that pipe that goes from the Y up and over to the front resonator, the one that has the flex in it. Our flex is coming apart and I need to replace this section 😂. Love all your videos Eric, I’ve learned a ton and you’ve made me a better mechanic!!
Yup, cut those buggers off many times with a Dremel and cutting disc. Not nearly as fast as the torch, but it gets the job done.
MR O. i seen you on FB justifying that Subaru frame swap. you had nothing to explain. you have to be the most honest mechanic i've ever watched on CZcams and that's like finding rocking horse crap. i watch others and think O M G Mr o wouldn't do that. SO SCREW the haters mr o i love watching your channel and seeing you do what others can't do. all the best to you and your family in 2023. cheers from australia
So I take the car to a shop and ask, "Can you cut my nuts off?" Hmmm...hopefully it all works out...
NOTHING LIKE THE SMELL OF THE HEAT WRENCH IN THE MORNING!!!
😃😃
Wow look at the rust already
Good job Mr O. That hot tea looked good....
I see Ponch back by the stereo keeping an eye on things at SMA.
