- Come along with Eric O at SMA as we have a look at this 2004 Honda Civic that was dropped off at the shop and the customer told us "I think it needs a clutch." A quick inspection shows that the right front axle shaft was SNAPPED IN HALF! Was this do to rust or the fact he was just learning how to drive standard!? -Enjoy!

When I was 5 years old, I can remember hanging over my father’s shoulder watching him doing brake jobs or hanging out under the grease rack watching oil changes and grease jobs. I once remember when my father had replaced the front wheel bearings and delivered a car to one of my friends dad. My friend and I went out to the car and I took the hubcap off and the bearing grease cap off and I was showing my friend what my dad had done. When the 2 men came out, my dad seemed embarrassed and put everything back but he wasn’t mad at me. I think he was actually proud that I was really paying attention. I’ve been working on cars for 55 years since. I sure miss him.
My dad is an asshole. He worked on cars. Never taught his 3 boys. I am self taught. Now I watch him screw up and put pads inside out. He says...those sound rough. I just laugh. Typical democrsp
I haven't spoken to my father in 13 years. He never taught me shit. He be gone in a few years lol.
Such a shame. My father wasn’t around much so I had to learn by reading shop manuals and trial and error-plus hard knocks. I would have loved teaching what I learned to a son, but only have girls who are like their mother. But I have tried to help other guys learn and show them things the books don’t teach. Probably if I had a son he would be as stubborn and argumentative as I am-but it would have been fun for me.
My old man worked on a Bedford cf campervan when I was younger, the engine was in the cab and he left some sort of insulation on the manifold. We took it for a spin few miles later the cab was up in smoke "we laugh about it now" his face that day was memorable. Its them little things that make good memorys.
My father didn't teach me shit and he's useless. I just turned 19 and he's in his 70s. If you say something about a car hell say it sounds like this and it will be 300% wrong. My ass works at a dealership and I've already gotten an engine ready to take out and they guy took it out while I wasn't there. I'm going to do an engine swap on my neon at his house once I get the money.
"the boot didn't get ripped, I peed a little..." Best line for a western ever.
“It came loose, didn’t rip the boot, I peed a little...” 😂😂😂 this is why I love Eric O.
The wife can't stop smelling "the good stuff." 👍🏽
@Power 2 Weight the box is probably made from hemp , depends what country it was made in
crotch smell...mmmmmmmm
@Power 2 Weight wow
Yeah sure you don't smoke the good bud LMAO
Hahahahaha
No officer... It's my axle shaft.... I swear !!
lol...thats funny stuff!
🚗🚓🐍👨🏼💼👨🏽✈️😂😂
It's a CV Joint..
@@warmfreeze LMAO
They call it a half shft for a reason
Best Eric O comment of the year, "I peed a little" will go into the repertoire of SMA-isms. Great video.
This guy replaces CV axles faster than most people take to change a tire
He makes it look easy
This exact thing happened on my 2007 Accord. Thanks for the video, gave me peace of mind when I thought it was a whole transmission or something until I looked underneath the car and saw the snap axle in exactly the same spot yours snapped at.
Evidently this is a common thing on these models.
Me too. Same car. Happened just as I was entering a tricky rotary in Massachusetts. Fortunately, I was able to coast around and exit without incident.
Btw, apparently, that dampener does do something. The new axles (I replaced both) were without those dampeners and I immediately noticed a slight, but distinct shudder when accelerating from a stop. Have gotten used to it.
Probably why this is called a CV 'joint'...
One of those two piece deals.
CV Joint : Constant Velocity . You're Welcome .
The joint did not break. The shaft did.
@@kmack282 yeah I really hate it when my shaft breaks. There's my problem lady!
` AAz
The CV axle replacement was great but Mrs. O is awesome!
MRs O. won the camera ... AGAIN !!!!!
Eric, you and Mrs. O are a hoot on camera! LOL
Lol nearly died when she said “yeh it smells like the good stuff” lol classic
100 likes!!!
You guys are awesome together. We need more Mrs. O in the videos
Haha, "It smells like the good stuff." Classic Mrs. O.
might be why she is making food in lots of videos
In my 40 years as a Honda dealer tech I of course had many driveshafts to remove/replace. One hint I can offer is if you're going to use a tool like the one shown, put the ball joint nut back on upside down (or a regular nut) and flush with the end of the stud or slightly more. On a tough one it can prevent the end of the stud from being crushed where it is cross drilled for the cotter pin. Also, some silicone spray on the ball joint boot helps the tool slide past without damaging the boot and you should do your best to adjust the tool to contact the end of the stud as squarely as possible for the least chance of damage to it.
Lmao. Mrs O is awesome. Always get a laugh when she pops in
Eric, I have to say your repair videos are fantastic and you have one of the World's cutest families. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and happiness!
The funny banter between Mr & Mrs. O always makes for a classic SMA video.
When I was 7 years old, I used to help my dad with changing spark plugs and other things. I'm 13 now, and recently helped my dad change the alternator and starter.
This videos are so entertaining while working. Glad I stumbled upon this channel. People really underestimate independent repair shops and the handy mans.
You know someone is going to go to Advance and ask for a CV joint just to see ;)
Heh-heh! He said joint.
Jeff Collins - you got it! That’s it! It smells like weed cuz it has joints in it.
At the pizza place i worked at it was "sprinkles" on the pizza for code
No pun intended lol
Tried it already, a real bugger to skin up on though !
Upvote for the "I peed a little" comment.
Ah the human version of
WEIGHT REDUCTION BRO!!!
Hahaha! Best laugh i've had in a awhile!!
Great video. I’m especially impressed with the great camera work (great field of view and excellent lighting). The mechanic tutorial content is awesome and your narration style is quite entertaining!
Lmao, Mrs. O said that box smells like the “good stuff” LOL!!
Extremely suspicious how happy she looked when she found out what it smelled like.... ☺
R. E. Hill 😂
Yeah did you notice how she kept smelling the box even when he put it up to the camera for us, she wanted it back for more inhaling. 🤧
When he mentioned the smelly sticky kind she's like, "Yeah, the GOOD stuff!"
I'd be kool with them if they toked!
At least she knew what High Quality Buds smells like ;) Once you smell heaven .. you will forever know quality.
You have a wonderful family. I have a small shop behind my home with two children and I have learned alot from you. Keep up the good work.
I did not post the above comment here !!! Guess I'm being "doubled" ??? Weird
Oh my , this video is gold . Kona gold .
Now I know why my wife and I thoroughly enjoy watching you two . Fellow mom and pop shop owners.
Tell 'Ole girl' , be glad your in SMA instead of Davalos Plumbing. Our stuff never smells good. My wife is just like the Mrs O , always finding ways to go to the job instead of the office. She likes the work enough that we had to get her registered as a plumbers apprentice , so much so our local inspectors stop at our jobs to chat with her . Times have actually changed for the better from our case study's perspective.
Hello Eric, love watching your great videos. I watch them every day when I arrive home from work. Learned a lot from you.Thank you....John from Toronto, Canada
Advance is probably smuggling weed in the boxes as they go out to the stores. They are probably trying to make enough money to cover there warranty exchanges on rebuilt starters and alternators.
My dad is a OTR Owner operator truck driver, you wouldn't belive the Big name company's that either someone high up in the company was into drug smuggling or the owners of the companys themselves where into it. I can name 5 - 10 company's that I know for a Fact atleast USED TO at one time move serious weight it would drop your jaw, OFC I'm not going to name drop but yeah, Its crazy
Lends a whole new meaning to "high up in the company. . . ."!!
Climbing the Corporate Bong as it were...
Lmao worked for advance for years didn't many hours hunting the axle and other isles for weed
😂
This is funnier than watching All in the family re runs!
lol got to love it when Mrs O gives him a hard time
I've been watching your videos from New Zealand for a while now and I really enjoy them. The number of times I've seen the undersides of cars you've worked on makes me think that where you are they must put loads of salt on the roads in winter - rust! I guess we are lucky not to have such severe winter conditions; we don't have to use salt on the roads, only grit. So we don't have that much rust to contend with.
You rock Eric! You and your family are awesome and you are a fortunate man! I wish I had the guys to open my own shop so that my family could work with me. I really enjoy your channel.
Had a good laugh when Mrs. O said "the good stuff".
Anyone who’s ever lost a hub cap should appreciate that on Honda’s the lug nuts also hold the hub cap on.
Karl,
On late 90s Chrysler cars, the lug nuts hold the wheel cover on too.
Same with some nissans
@@bertgrau9246 On 1960-70s Renaults the wheel were mounted with 3 lug nuts and the hub cap had retained bolt with a head size the same as the lug nuts. The full-size spare of the R16 with mounted under the hood in front of the engine over its transmission. The engine was mounted the reverse of the way we do it the most FWD cars. Easiest 4 cylinder engine I ever needed to work on.
This was so informative for a girl who knows nothing about axels. My Honda Accord just snapped today with the same sound. You really taught me a lot in minutes. Thank you for this great video. Your fam is awesome. Who knows, the packaging could be made out of hemp or someone is transporting MaryJane with the parts. Lol. At least your wife knows the difference between good stuff and garbage. She's a hound. LoL. Enjoyed y'all very much!! 😘
7:31 child screams in background, no reaction lol. Only people who have kids can do that.
no people with one kid panic. People with three don't flinch haha
After the first kid maybe first two kids, you learn to not react to much of anything. That's just the nature of children, loud random spontaneous noises.
@@somepersonlol4t34 first kid..eating cat food...calling ambulance , detox and whatever. second kid eating cat food....just put away, third kid eating cat or dog food..one is guessing if the kid ate enough so no supper is needed....
Also most parents know their kids screams and can tell if it’s an actual emergency 😂
First kid gets the sterilised bottles and locked cupboards. Second and up are subject to Darwin's theory.
WARNING: you are gonna come into the dark corner in the office, looking for some lunch to eat, and it'll be waiting for you (uncooked) out on the parts pile for Mrs. Os car repair!! You know that song:
"If mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!!
You better fix mamas car, and put up a light!!"
Mrs. O, keep riding him, and ride him HARD.........til the timing belt/water pump gets replaced......
I started watching your channel a few days ago and love it! I am learning so much from watching you.
I vote for Mrs O to be in more vids. She's a 🔟🔟🙌👍
Mrs. O is a hottie!
Mark Lance wow your a jackass and a jealous one at that
Mark Lance 😳 don’t be mean to mr o
@Mark Lance must be insecure about yourself
@Mark Lance no he didn’t get lucky. He got her by probably being a stand up guy and not being a jerk to others.
Had a hondoo two weeks ago that came in, another shop diagnosed a transmission... Broken axle exactly like that. Here in Arizona! Though it was a Wisconsin vehicle. Sure had to give it the beans to get it unseized from the hub! And whatdya know! New axle packaging smelled the same!
@@goodguy3803 crooked people
Seem common with the original axle with the piece in the middle, that the reason why mechanics in my area would recommend an aftermarket axle over original if the it has that piece in the middle
@@goodguy3803 it was a seat of the pants diagnosis. They were probably just finding a way to ship it, because they had a peek and saw the rust. Which some shops around here turn people away for. Since it isn't common.
You have the best youtube channel! I started watching your videos to learn, and before I know it, now I watch them for fun also! Thank you a lot, for making learning fun.
I've watched a few of your videos now and this one earned you a new subscriber!
I have a Honda Element with a torn cvc boot and need to get it fixed before it breaks. Always enjoy your videos
Born & Raised in NY City, later moved to "the island" left when I was 20 to serve in US Navy Nuc Sub Force & never came back....but I remember the rusty cars but dont remember axles rusting in half....maybe the steel was better in '76 when I left.....or has the salt gotten that much better?????????? Glad Im here with my happy non rusted car in Sunny Morgan Hill, CA.
I'm in PA and I've snapped both axles in my 08 TL. Both at the same stop sign!
Technically, if a half axle breaks into two, aren't they quarter axles?
a half-half shaft lmao
@@Jmasta7 drive shaft half shaft are in live axles??? surley
One broken half axle makes two half axles.
Is a cv axel that isnt moving an nv axel?
Like axel rose.. lol.. accel.. axle.. acksel.. akzel.. aqsle...
Eric O. I am so glad you said the wheel shimmy was slow speed. I had a Plymouth Voyager that did that and I thought someone had slid on ice into the curb bending the wheel. I couldn't figure out which wheel because none of them wobbled making me puzzled. Other than the transmission going out every other year was really a good van. Now I know thanks Eric.
Good friendly banter between wife and mechanic, especially the "ragging" about using parts ordered for her car to repair clients cars.
HA HA! Mrs. O likes to mess with you Eric!
She's like a money Nazi that only charges Mr. O as she blows money on all kinds of shit.
Damn....she just keeps grabbing that box and sniffing away. Lol
She must be part cat. LOL
Mrs. O is such a good sport!
Awesome video, You make that look so easy. Your town looks like such a nice place to live and work. You are truly blessed.
Hahaha....Mrs. O is a hoot ! "The good stuff".
this is probably my favorite "episode" from SMAR, "I peed a little" "we don't smoke the weed"
not to mention the proverbiable " the true enemy was New York rust"
VTEC kicked in yo and the torque of this big block just snapped the damn CV axle. Excellent vids eric.
It's ok Mrs. O we love you here ih Oregon.
Looks like Vtec kicked in Yo!
😂😂.
was looking for that comment before making it... That TORQUE though!
lol
Those windshield wipers are off the hook
Its a SOHC 1.7 L no vtech
I've always had trouble with the Honda inner snap ring on those axles and thought it was wrong to tap the end of it with a hammer. I trust your judgement, and next time I'll do that, too. Thanks for the entertainment and knowledge. Great channel !
Reddit says others noticed the same smell. Supposedly the boxes might be made with hemp fibers so if true its possible and you're 100% correct.
Didn't try to read anything into your observation. On the other hand the FEISTY Mrs O left me smiling. You lucky dog!
Eric:
Section of a smaller diameter on a CV joint is meant to minimize Torque Steer during acceleration and steering under Dynamic load....yes...even on a 100hp Civic.
Noticed that the replacement didn't have the same 'damper' as the failed axle.
@@mmi16 yep. common trait of dirt-cheap inexpensive parts that have Universal fitments.
Chinese rubber. You can pick that scent up at Harbor Freight periodically, especially in the rubber wheel and tire section.
I've been seeing a ton of these at my shop lately. Civics, Accords, Fits, and Acura TL. They rust out under the rubber vibration dampener, and then all of a sudden SNAP!!! Now customer has activated "pedestrian mode"!
i was surprised you didn't say anything about it needing a wheel aliment check. but some thing new learnt, great video as always Eric O cheers ...
You truly are the rust whisperer
MRS.O IS FUNNY ERIC YOU SHOULD FIX HER CAR REMEMBER HAPPY WIFE HAPPY LIFE
And her light over food prep area.
Behind every man is a Mrs. O inspiring him.
Great video guys .Keep it up. Always noticed the smell as well but never put 2 and 2 together .The box is smokeable .
Too much VTEC for that poor CV axle :( Rest in Pepperonni.
side step clutch at 6,000 rpm? check, dry pavement under tires? check, cv half shaft breaking? priceless!!!
“We don’t smoke the weed” LOL
I know right
Isn't it legal in New York now ?? Idk cause I live in Las Vegas where it's recreational!
I love this channel so much I feel like I’ve become friends watching his videos over the years
I had a job where I dictated fairly long reports to a recording machine. Occasionally, someone I had never seen before would approach me in the hallway and begin a conversation with me and act like they had known me a long time. I would rack my brain trying to remember how I know them and their name and eventually I realized that they were the person transcribing my reports and I hadn't met them before but after listing to me talk for hours they were comfortable talking to me like an old friend. I'm sure something similar has happened to Eric a time or two
Too funny. Glad to see the whole family gets involved. Great video sir.
That’s how we get free shipping and lifetime warranty on parts from Mexico
jason baughn They need us as a reason to keep smuggling lol
Saw couple of your videos. I like the rawness of them... Great work.... And blessings from Pakistan
Brother love the videos, keep up the great work. Some of the best videos on CZcams,....honest clean information A+
Good job Eric quick and east
If every Dorman box came with a complementary dime bag you might not have such a low opinion of their parts. In fact you might look forward to Dorman caused come-backs.
Might as well get something good for your money.
Mrs O present so well in the video....great team...
I love the "I don't think it had enough lead in it's pencil" that's awesome 😂
Love your videos man. I have binged watch most of your videos
This is really common on the older Civics (at least here in UK). The driveshaft damper traps water and corrodes the surface of the driveshaft creating a stress raiser. Just takes a bit of enthusiastic/clumsy clutch action to shear it off.
Everyone should replace them preemptively then. That's dangerous as fuck
@@WCGwkf I see the new replacement didn't have a damper.
Not just older Civics. This has just happened to my 2010 CRZ. Part of my maintenance on any car will now be checking the driveshafts for corrosion especially underneath these strange rubber bushes that they fit.
@@gedhicks2855 This happened on my 2012 honda fit, I told the mechanic working on it that I snapped a cv axle on a honda fit, and he's like....a honda fit? as if it would have enough power to snap anything lol luckily Honda acknowledges how shitty they made these and this was actually recalled and replaced for free, but they wouldnt change out my other axle which annoyed me because it has to break eventually because of the poor design...when mine broke I was pulling out into an intersection and lost all power, luckily able to roll to the other side using momentum, next time me mights not be so lucky, and if I live there will be hell to pay lol
This happened on my 6th gen civic. No need to worry about the drivers side axle because these always have an oil pan leak so that side is always rust free.
Hahah great video great banter between you and this is how we have the same problem with them drive shaft over here
One of you best videos , the O team
Great channel, you and your family are great. Love the show , i miss the north. Keep on with your show
You got to have the wifey in the shop more often for comic relief.....she's a hoot!!!!!
This is my favorite SMA video. Bar none. LMBO!
I like watching the two of you working what a team 😁
I watch all your videos, but don't comment. Lots of entertainment plus information. Thanks.
"Why's it smell like this?" *nonchalantly keeps taking whiffs* lol!! Great video, love it!! You guys are a blast to hang out with :)
yep looks like a conasure to me bet some folks can tell you exactly what part of the world it come from and what day the harvest was lol
Very good video - right to the point - good shots of how to get it out and back in !!! Always put the cotter pin back where it belongs !!!! I'm heading to my Advance auto store ... going to look at a CV joint in its box, and smell it to see if it is the right one ....then I'll think about it !!!!! This is a very good show, never a dull moment and lots of learning !!!!
Hi, SMAR. You guys are great, including your boy. Good ob job the axle. Thanks for sharing! Stay Healthy!
We had one just like that at the shop I worked at a kid just bought it and was learning to drive a stick broke right at the dampener Honda Civic great video 👍
Best SMA video ever!
who the FUCK are YOU?
We love you both, Eric and Mrs. O. I wish I could win the lottery and send you a big check to help cover your overhead!
No wonder you have so many subs and views! Everyone trying to catch the mega babe! Great video as always!
I've got that exact separator and it's awesome
We need a Mrs o video
She has one.. Fixing her rear wiper... No, not that wiper!... Her rear "windshield" wiper.LOL
Yes, Vanessa- Eric is right. *YOU* can fix your door. *YOU* can fix your timing belt. *YOU* can change your oil. Pull it in after hours, break out the camera, turn on the CZcams- and get to work.
If Eric can do it, YOU can complain about it.
That’s what no one would expect!!!!
They all come from where the good stuff is grown... MEXICO
Nice to see an honest car mechanic that actually knows what he is doing. I’m no pro, but can fix most electrical issues with the schematics and a voltmeter. I have what I think is an ok diagnostic analyzer. A Zurich Pro. Does ok. Love the apparent patience! Funny how any electrical problems seem so basic. Once you find the proble. Lol
