  • Did a little walk around Lloyd Center in Portland scoping out empty or abandoned storefronts there. Lloyd Center is Portland's oldest shopping mall, built in 1960. It was reportedly the largest mall in the world when construction was completed.

I went to school very close to the mall, graduated in 2000. It was so cool being so close to the mall in its hay day.

I went there for the first time in December 2015 a week or two before Christmas and could barely walk because it was so crowded.

Lloyd Center should have been left open air. The enclosure, though tripling the traffic at the time in 1991, after the 2008 recession it has worked to hurt the mall by cutting it off from the neighborhood and turning it into a fortress since during the enclosure to expand the mall, they did a massive dig out of the concourse (which had a parking garage below it) and then moved the displaced parking spots to parking garages that surround the mall.

I absolutely LOVED LLOYD CENTER. I also loved Meier and Frank department store. My family spent a lot of time in that Mall. Hope Lloyd center can make a resurgence someday. Newbies have zero idea how great Portland used to be.

Used to do security at Lloyd Center in the early 2000s. It's so sad to see what's happened to all of Portland. Used to love hanging in alot of spots in and around Portland. When I haff nothing to do, I'd drive around and help people who may be broken down while driving or even just generally broken down by life. I met so many interesting people doing things like that. AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, learned that some of these most kind and generous people you can know have had the absolute worst happen to them in their lives. Never discount your fellow man, no matter what the covering looks like; they may have the soul of an angel residing in those rags. I've gotten hugs out of the most tough- looking "biker" types that you'd never imagine. I sooo wish that i had more money that i could use to get out to others and help them with still.

The Lloyd mall is in phase two renovation; adding a new 14 screen cinema on east end and an live entertainment venue on the west with dozens of new restaurants and shops to follow. Recently thousands of new housing units have been built or planned, plus hotels and office buildings.

I was there in mid March.
It's even emptier than it was during the Christmas holidays.
Other than Macys and Ross, there are no more larger department stores.
      There are few potential customers.
There is no longer any reason for the mall to exist.
Might as well level the whole thing.

It's all canceled. The owner is looking to sell it to be torn down either for a baseball stadium or for apartments and offices depending on who has the better offer. The Texas company running it has mismanaged the place at every turn. Shoplifting has exploded while at the same time security has harassed people of color and young people who are completely innocent (I know of a 20 year old woman who was detained and interrogated for 30 minutes by security after a false alarm went of as she left the store) further hurting it's reputation. All while gang violence in those parking garages that were built in 1989-1991 when the parking was moved from beneath the mall to the sides of the mall to accommodate a new basement level floor when the mall was enclosed and expanded. There have been multiple missed opportunities by management. The Texas owners have done such a bad job that they have gone through three managers since they bought the place. This mall needs to be torn down or at least the roof and the parking garages need to go.

@@SomeDudeWithAnExitSign I don't know but I have co-workers who know inside information and there are people on reddit who have reported the same thing and people working at the mall (my mom went to the mall recently and they reported the same things I have seen on reddit and heard from co-workers) but the owners from Texas are super secretive. I drove by the mall today since I was in the area and saw no signs of construction as well on the projects they for the last several years said would come.

This mall is like mall 205 now. Dead but still alive. I think The only reason that this mall is still alive is the ice rank. If Clackmas Town Center never closed and removed the skating rink, Lloyd center would be dead by now. Now the only thing killing this mall if Macy’s leaves the mall. That will put the final nail in the coffin for this mall. It would turn out like Rolling acres mall. This mall is not what it used to be. They trying to renovate the place to move the movie theater. It looks like Clackmas town center or Washington square will be the mall of Oregon. There nothing here at all. I don’t see a future for this mall. Especially with COVID-19 I don’t see this mall open by the time I graduate high school. Update:Macy’s announced that the Lloyd center location will be closing. I think this mall will be closed by 2022. If you want to go here. Now is the chance if you can go there.

And in Steve's updated video from November 2021he mentions the mall is facing foreclosure. Washington Square seems to be doing okay despite the pandemic and the lost of anchor store Sears. Haven't been to Clackamas TC since before the pandemic and it was looking a little too under occupied at that time.

6:35 this was a Sam Goody back in the day. But the last store there was a shoe store called Trend Shoes I believe but they did not change the inside much. That explains the TVs still hanging from the ceiling.

I am inclined to believe the neighborhood has more to do with the failure than on-line shopping. Last time (three years) I was in Portland, Clackamas Town Center was still doing fine.

I actually went back a couple days to shoot another video of how empty it’s become. I’m planning on posting it tomorrow, but yeah I haven’t been there since early 2020 and I was surprised at how empty it was, even after hearing stories of how empty it was.

Your hemming and hawing about the transient and homeless population at 2:45 is really irritating. It should have been left as an open air mall. I'm glad i remember it as it was.
