'Intellectual & Spiritual Bankruptcy': Dr. Cornel West Resigns From Harvard Over Tenure Battle

  • Dr. Cornel West resigned from Harvard University due to a tenure battle.
Dr. West also says his resignation is the effect of the school's "intellectual and spiritual bankruptcy."
In what he called a "candid letter of resignation" to the Dean of his college, West wrote:
"I hope and pray you and your family are well! This summer is a scorcher! Here is my brief and candid letter of resignation: "How sad it is to see our beloved Harvard Divinity School in such decline and decay. The disarray of a scatter curriculum, the disenchantment of talented yet differential faculty, and the disorientation of precious students loom large. When I arrived four years ago - with a salary less than what I received 15 years earlier and with no tenure statues after being a University Professor at Harvard and Princeton - I hoped and prayed I could still end my career with some semblance of intellectual intensity and personal respect. How wrong I was! With a few glorious and glaring exceptions, the shadow of Jim Crow was cast in its new glittering form expressed in the language of superficial diversity: all my courses were subsumed under Afro-American Religious Studies including those on Existentialism, American Democracy and The Conduct of Life, no possible summer salary alongside the lowest increase possible every year. Yet I delivered two convocation addresses and on commencement speech in four years. I was promised a year sabbatical but could only take one semester in practice. And to witness a faculty enthusiastically support a candidate for tenure then timidly defer to a rejection based on the Harvard administration's hostility to the Palestinian cause was disgusting. We all knew the mendacious reasons given that had nothing to do with academic standards. When my committee recommended a tenure review - also rejected by the Harvard administration - I knew my academic achievements and student teaching meant far less than their pollical prejudices. Even my good friends in the Afro-American and African Studies Department were paralyzed, given their close relations to the administration. And after teaching extra courses, including five courses in one year, this silence continued. When the announcement of the death of my beloved Mother appeared in the regular newsletter, I received two public replied (just as that of my colleague Dr. Jacqueline Olga Cooke-Rivers who received none when her blessed Mother died). Any ordinary announcement about a lecture, award or professional advancement receives about twenty replies! This kind of narcisstic academic professionalism, cowardly deference to the anti-Palestinian prejudices of the Harvard administration, and indifference to my Mother's death constitute an intellectual and spiritual bankruptcy of deep depths. In my case, a serious commitment to Veritas requires resignation - with precious memories but absolutely no regrets!"

Cornell West’s discussion is in stark contrast of what this channel generally promotes. This channel is hugely supportive of the black DC establishment. The obsession with black Greek culture. The dismissal of progressive policies aimed at helping the black lower economic class.

At 5:28 West said "for every White brother who's a John Brown, he's got thousands of cousins, who never got the memo". This also describes our situation and condition. We all get the memo on the most trivial or even negative things, but on those things that are crucial there is no communication or coordination of efforts, when significant numbers of us, do receive the same message. It logically stands to reason, that a systemic force working against us, requires a coordinated effort, at least, from us.
How are we ever going to get the vast majority of us, working in sync, on any of our problems? That is the greatest and most fundamental problem we have, and need most to be addressed first. West spoke passionately, as he always does, about our qualities, as a group, but the quality of that homogeneity, has to be questioned today. West was asked about the necessity of a movement of Black intellectuals, to flock to HBCUs, and West gave reasons why this is not as simple, as it sounds. One simple factor that many seem not to what to emphasize, in recent years, is that many, if not most HBCUs, are state institutions, and as such, are only Black schools in theory.
The discussion of West's position of Afrocentricity was refreshing and enlightening. It brought to fore the need for a lot of old lingering issues with Afro-centricity, that should have long ago, been debated and resolved, among Black scholars and intellectuals. The whole field has gone off into various tangents. It seems every 20 or 10 years their is some new group vying for the allegiance of Black people, and proclaiming a new identity and history for us. The whole study in some circles, is presented as a game show. In it's early days many of the laypersons who gravitated to it, extrapolated all many of claims form what the scholars taught. For many everything was originally the source of Black people. The early claim by some Black scholars that the translation of the word Kemet to mean "the Black land", was incorrect and really means - 'land of the Blacks" - made no sense to me, as it does not distinguish them from all the other Black peoples, in that part of the world. This is what many of the laypersons were promoting.
Another popular mantra-like-notion that was propagated, was that the Greeks learned everything they knew, from the people of Kemet. This is obviously not true, but many people who were well studied in history, were making this claim. This insults the intelligence of Black people. The history of human development is the history of cultural interaction, and the emergent of new cultures or aspects of a culture. No people in this process were a blank slate that were waiting on others to bring them everything they needed, to move forward. Groups moved at their own pace, which was determined by many factors. The Greeks certainly changed much of what they learned from Kemet, by applying some of what they already had. It is Ironic that , those who made this claim, had an exception to this generalization. It was homosexuality. They allow Greeks, that one exception.
It is bad enough that White people have historically insulted our intelligence, but it is another, when we do it to ourselves. We talk of Trumpism and the denial of reality of it, and the willingness of Whites to believe whatever they want to hear, but we are no different. We are selective in our questioning of what is said to us, by us. That we have some people who say that the slave trade never happen, or at least they question it ever happening, is telling. This says a lot about our people-hood. We are so fractured in our beliefs/ideologies and aspirations. We are a group only in the loosest sense of the word. If we are not willing to address the contradictions within/among us, by applying honest open, critical thinking, we may remain in this divided and dysfunctional state into perpetuity. Future generation will fall even further behind.
Martin talked about building and passing on progress for future generations. HBCU, are only as, or can only be, as good as, the students that come to them. The curriculum in the public schools that our children attend, is lacking, and I'm not talking about true and thorough Black history. Many of the old areas of study are no longer a part of the curriculum. Civics, music, art, home economics, language, and industrial arts, are no longer taught. This doesn't even cover the need to update what is taught in the basic subjects of math, science, English, social studies, etc..
HBCU'S and our major organization should be coordinated in an effort to increase funding in these schools nationally, so the curriculum in them can be restored to full capacity and capability, needed to meet the demands of the future, our students must meet. The expectations we have of our children must be increased. We have to extend the same expectations we place on them in life in general, that we do in the fields of sports and entertainment. In those areas we have no problem demanding an extra effort from them. They in fact will push themselves in these areas, but in too many instances - only in these areas.
Ironically in one troubling area many of us, even intellectuals, will insist on us exercising our equality with the rest of society. That is in the area of killing one another. We have always spoke out against the fratricide that has long taking place among us at a rate higher than any other group, yet today intellectuals like Michael Eric Dyson, say to this problem that we should not speak of it, that to do so "makes us look pathological". He and others who are a part of Hip-hop culture seem to forget about the H-H 'Stop The Violence Movement' of the 80's. Some of them respond to this by saying "Black on Black crime is not a thing" They add "people kill people they live near" and that "no other people talk about killing each other". Many of these people were a part of H-H in the 80's. Where was this opposition then. Why is it all of a sudden wrong to speak out against violence, after all these years? Has some revelation come down from on high? Did this revelation precipitate the new slang terms for awareness (woke, facts, and 100)? If this is the case why is not the details of this new understanding known widespread among our people? Why did not we all get the memo? Why have the Dr. Wests and the Professor Dyson's among us debated this shift in attitude among many of us? What does it say about our people-hood, that this dramatic shift in attitude and outlook takes place, and no talk of it takes place? Does this in itself, represent spiritual and intellectual bankruptcy?
