      I'm embarrassed to be an American right now. Fuck Trump and fuck every one of you who voted for him. And he's totally using the relatively few people working in coal as pawns... You think he cares about you? He's probably (definitely) lining his pockets from special interests and companies even outside of coal who will make money by not having these environmental regulations in place. Hopefully we can turn back this shit soon after he's gone.

And instead of doing research, people panicked and voted for the guy with NO plan.

    The coal industry is dying and there's literally nothing anyone can ever do to stop it. Time relentlessly moves forward and it's incredibly arrogant, to say the least, to think that something as puny as human insecurity and nostalgia can force it to go rewind. Renewable energy is the future and it's objectively the best choice to make in this scenario, whether or not anyone likes it and despite how expensive it may initially be.

      OK guys, both of you should calm down. I'm a black woman and I actually chuckled when reading the slave/plantation anology. I actually found it funny.
      Now, to the German guy. Our slave history and Germany's Nazi history and how we feel about them are not comparable. Let's say we have a convicted rapist. He's already been to jail and has really worked to redeem himself and make up for his crimes. His victims and society do still get to be mad at him and work on getting over it at their own pace. It may be uncomfortable for him but he's the one who transgressed in the first place.
      Now you have a rape victim. He/she heals at her own pace. Nobody gets to dictate to him/her when she should be over this traumatic experience. Especially if this victim was brutalized long term and is still suffering the effects of this trauma years on. Of course she needs to work on getting over it and getting her life together, nobody (especially her) benefits from her remaining in this traumatized/victimised state forever but you sure as hell don't get to tell her when to be 100% over her experience.

    Dick Cheney and Wyoming are responsible for the death of small coal mines. Cheney, who is from Wyoming, lifted regulations on fracking. This means cheaper clean natural gas. In Wyoming there is the Black Thunder Coal Mine. This is the largest open pit mine in North America and they just happen to have the cleanest coal in the world. The state of Wyoming has legislated hard for CLEAN COAL regulations. Now tell me, who killed the Coal Mining business? The exportation of coal has never been higher? The Coal mines in the Eastern United States have the dirtiest coal. Why would we mine it?
    I was a hard rock miner (mining gold, silver, platinum, copper, lead, zinc) and I worked all over the Rockies, Alaska, Canada and Central America. When our industry slows down we go to the tunneling business or get normal jobs. We do not whine and cry and expect the government to give us handouts. Coal miners act like they are national hero's, what is up with that?
    Coal miners need to face reality and get prepared for change.

      Since you read the book, how much cleaner is natural gas than coal?
      {Natural gas is a fossil fuel, though the global warming emissions from its combustion are much lower than those from coal or oil. Natural gas emits 50 to 60 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2) when combusted in a new, efficient natural gas power plant compared with emissions from a typical new coal plant [1].}
      I will gladly take natural gas over coal anytime Mr. Expert(tf1977sled)

    Let's just assume, just for the sake of argument, that there _has,_ in fact, been a war on coal. I'm thinking that the skills of coal mining are pretty transferable, and that the _renewable_ energy sector is... well... _renewable._ So one can continue digging a coal mine deeper and deeper until it runs out and then look for _another_ place to dig a mine, and then keep doing this, continue uprooting one's life and family until all the coal in the world runs out or one die, or one can find a wind farm or solar power plant that is going to have the occasional maintenance need when something wears out or breaks, or it will need occasional construction to expand when the population it caters to grows and just work _there._ It's a pretty safe bet the wind is never going to stop blowing and the sun is never going to stop shining. I have trouble picturing a world in which someone has occasion to say, "That's it. There's no more wind. There's no more sun. We _used_ it all."
    One may need sunglasses and a hat and, if it's in a warm climate, sunscreen, but otherwise, what worries would one have?

      While I do agree with you that the renewable energy sector has much more potential for growth than coal and is a better place to work, I'm not sure that being a coal miner gives one the skills to switch to working on clean energy.
      While both jobs produce energy, they still seem to require very different skill sets; Coal mining requires working underground and using mining techniques, while clean energy requires building, installing, and maintaining clean energy producers. Those don't require the same skills at all, and I imagine the tasks required for clean energy are complex enough to require significant training that the coal miners presumably lack.

    America used to be a country with millions of manufacturing jobs, but throughout the Clinton and Bush Presidencies most were shipped overseas or were replaced by robots to save corporations money. President Obama tried to bring many of these jobs back, but he couldn't bring back every single manufacturing job because foreign goods are cheaper to make than American goods, and those who did get their job back got paid less due needing fewer workers now. Conversely, coal mining is a low-skill energy job that Obama did reduce, but he did so because it's not the safest line of work. Also coal isn't the best source of energy anymore, and solar and wind industries would have provided jobs but climate change deniers didn't want to give these industries a chance, thus preventing new low-skill labor jobs from replacing the coal mining jobs. Oh, and 1 more thing, anything that created pollution is by definition not clean.

    • @zolt74
      @zolt74 Před 7 lety +1

      "Obama tried to bring these jobs back"
      Yes, that's why he tried to ram the TPP down our throats. Which would have been devastating for a number of reasons, jobs just being one of them.
      Also, wind energy is horrifically stupid. It utterly ruins the environment for both humans and animals, is incredibly inefficient, and uses incredible amounts of fossil fuels just to manufacture, set up, build the necessary infrastructure, and maintain it all. As for solar, it is really only feasible for small-scale usage. The best alternative to coal by far is nuclear.

    • @frsttyyyy
      @frsttyyyy Před 7 lety +4

      wind is that bad its tends to be feasible, and so is solar the only drawback of solar tends to be its space and the that the energy cannot be stored effectively but all those can be easily worked through.nuclear is relatively clean but the problem is then nuclear waste.talking about ruining the environment coal aint exactly some godsent clean source. its worse than all of the above. atleast with nuclear waste you can somehow store the waste. coal residue goes into the atmosphere it causes climate change. deny it all you want but recent weather event prove that climate change is a thing and what trump did will not only kill america slowly but the entire world..

It's not simply shitting on coal and gas companies, the plan is to create equivalent jobs in green energy plants to transfer workers to at as close to a 100% placement rate as possible. It's not taking their jobs, it's replacing it with one that will reward them the same while reducing health risks for both the workers and their communities.

    Clean coal is a con, it sounds great, and it appeals to people who are invested in coal, but it's not real. Burning coal, regardless of purity is not a perfect exothermic reaction. It releases byproducts which present environmental hazards, be it carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, or particulate matter. What is being talked about when talking heads say "clean coal," is adding levels of technology to power plants to attempt to reduce those byproducts. What they don't say is the technology they're talking about is A. Expensive and not likely to be used or if it is used will make coal non-competitive B. Unproven C. Not 100% efficient itself, so to keep electricity production up more coal will be burned.

  • @monicakohler6110
    @monicakohler6110 Před 7 lety +5

    I work with combustion engineers that specifically research coal for power plants, and have for 20 years. They are trying to find ways to make our fossil fuels last longer and burn cleaner, as well as trying to develop alternate fuels that are wastes from other industries. They are also looking at carbon sequestration and other uses for coal, like carbon fiber. The current budget plan cuts research spending by the Department of Energy and will make any attempts at finding better ways to energy more difficult and will actually support our need for foreign sources.

But as humans evolve and progress there's always going to be obsolete jobs. I was a meat cutter for 35 years and there were many changes made to become more efficient. The days of grocery stores using hanging meat, like sides of beef to be broken down for processing have long been gone. Its technology and progress. Coal is not an efficient way to provide energy.
