- There is a lot that can be learned by just watching someone DO something. So sit back, relax and watch Calvin put together his new bike.
No major lessons to learn, or concepts to explore, just a guy putting together his brand new bike and talking his way through it.
Enjoy!

This is amazing! It's like a Bike repair version of Bob Ross.
About aligning the handle bar and the fork: Such a simple and absolutely obvious trick...but damn...the most useful one I have heard in a while.
Pro Tip: Lay out all of your parts, look them over and make a list of the order they go on.
10 minutes of preparation can save you an hour of frustration.
Calvin is a world heritage human. Preserve him at all costs!
Of the approximate 813 billion bike CZcamsrs, Calvin is still my favorite OG to watch!
Photo protocol, there's an argument for having the top and bottom chain runs parallel, but I usually prefer somewhere in the middle of the range so the derailleur has an attractive Z bend to the parallelogram rather than the pulley cage being at either of it's extremes.
"We do it right, because we do it twice". Congrats on the new bike.
I think Calvin unlocked a new subgenre of bike assembly/repair ASMR here. The no-music sections especially are really relaxing to watch, seriously. It's satisfying to the brain, seeing a knowledgeable and chill professional just plying his passion in front of the camera with close-up shots and crisp, clear audio. Congrats on the new (totally sick!!!) machine Calv, give us an update on how it rides soon! 😁
I do agree. And some things which appear scary/difficult to me, he just did with a breeze. Great to watch, what a video.
Congrats on "new bike day" Calvin!
very true "you learn more from your mistakes", so don't get worked up over that, just make sure to move on to other/different mistakes (not learning from old ones)!
Cheers!
Now before i even watch a minute of this,
i know that this will be the most informative bike build on youtube to date
SRAM: ”Full Suspension Frames: To size the chain, the rear shock must be fully compressed.” Calvin: Yes.😁
You can just add 4, I think hardtails could do with less or something.
Either way, with the add 4 technique I get the same chain length needed as when my bike is fully compressed.
Excellent video. There is something refreshing about a professional not swooning over every fresh piece of kit.
Thats a nice bit of kit you have there Calvin. Love to watch such an experienced mechanic at work.
It is Great to see you putting your new bike together sir! I really enjoy watching your videos. If I had 10% of your knowledge I would be proud. Keep going Calvin. I'm 53 years old now and still love bikes. You inspire me for sure. Thank You sir!
Not bad for your first day Calvin. Nice ride.
Love the bell.
I love work! I could watch it all day long. And i love watching Calvin work - he's the best! Enjoy that bike!
Ah yes the Industry Nine wheels, I have always wanted to try them out myself, it's a nice experience to build the bike yourself to build your experience right there, & work your way up.
Awesome video Calvin! I hope you have so much fun on your beautiful bike.
Sick whip Calvin!
Un vélo magnifique ! Merci Calvin 😁🚴♂️
Need more of this!
FWIW, the volume/power button on your phone should be considered when levelling using an app.
Very excited for you that this is your new bike.
Spring time in Minnesota!? 😆haha, Calvin there is still a foot of snow on the ground
This miiiight have been filmed a while ago...
Do it several hundred/thousand times (like most long stayers in bike industry have done) and you'll be good at it. I went from a volume sales shop to a boutique lifestyle shop, and the lifestyler owners were flabbergasted at how "quick" (30-40 mins: I tend to be slower than real contract builders) I was putting them together (they lovingly and over-longingly obsessed about every speck of dust on their two-wheeled objets de frottage). They assumed I wasn't doing it correctly, or carelessly, and I caught them giving the bikes I'd built surreptitious test rides when they thought I wasn't looking (I left to start my own workshop: I have discovered that my tolerance for cashed-up tossers declines as I age). But when you're on piece rates ($ per bike built: in Australia, usually $10-14), you try to get up to 17-20 per shift so that you've got some beer money after you've paid the rent.
The master himself at work
Very nice bike. See ya on the trails!
more of these please!
The sound of that hub...... 🤗
Congratulations 🎉
I like to take my photos with the RD in the gear which makes the upper length of chain level whilst in the biggest chainring
we had bets on what type of bicycle you had bought yourself Kelvin, i said he might be a traditionalist & pick a nice racing road bike from the late 80's or something like that, another said a gravel bike whilst another said an mtb but then we thought if it is an mtb will it be a hard tail or a full suspension...& nice one..glad you treated yourself to a lovely bike kelvin, i enjoyed this video to
Awesome & Thanks :)
I was half expecting to hear "lets take it outside and stare at it"
Thank you for the magic mechanic experience! I missed a bit, that you have not used your PT scale to measure the final weight! :- )))
I would say that the rear derailleur should be pointed straight down (vertical).
That can show the length of the rear derailleur.
Wether it's a SGS or not.
The side with the chain is best side to take a photo
watch & learn from the Master- Calvin Jones. love it.
Love the bell!
Super good !
Nice bell! 😁
I love you, Calvin.
That is one pretty frame.
Lay all your components on the work table, in the order they should be installed, with the right tools above them, organised in two rows. You won't forget anything. It's like when your cooking: cut all the ingredients first.
Now there's one more thing to line up, the mfcr logo on brake rotor to the valve. Of course Calvin goes by the book. Gospel of Calvin in his letter to the bikebuildians thou shalt align ones rotor logo with thine valve. So let it be written so let it be done.
I see a new park tool the HAG1 Handlebar Alignment Gauge 1, although I think it could be made in a U shape with the ends coming up all the way to the bars to align them
Keep up the good work Calvin Thou Art The Man
It's reassuring that even Calvin can slip up! I'm curious; I've always used a little grease or anti-seize on the threads of XD divers, as I've been stung with a very stuck Eagle cassette in the past - Calvin didn't use anything. Was there a reason why?? And can we find Calvin some grey brake hose and zip ties? 😂
Threads got anti-seize. Much gets left on the cutting room floor.
@@parktool I’m relieved!
The chain should be in the mid-gear of the stack for the photo. Great vid guys! I do appreciate the humble mistake.
My trusted bike mechanic!
What bash guard is he using?
Looks like it uses both the iscg tabs and the bottom bracket for mounting
I want to know, too! Looks nice and clean.
Oh Calvin did you set the chain gap while at sag? 😆 Nice build btw 🤙
Didn't you check the drop out before you installed the rear derailleur?
Photo protocol - personally I prefer the chain to be in the middle cassette on a MTB (road: middle to smallest cassette and largest chainring). I also align the cranks with the seat tube. Lastly for my road bike, all prior protocols apply but I take the photo from the non-drive side :)
Are you trying to get arrested?
@@stephenkohler3472 What? why? Are my photo protocols a crime? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
@@dwadeidol Oh sure, brake rotors are just so beautiful. I bet you don't even hide the stick that's supporting the bike, do you? It's all fun and games until an innocent child sees those pictures, and then what?! Trauma. Deep, permanent trauma. That's what.
Disgusting!
Think the rear derailleur photo needs some kind of happy medium. Both extremes look... well, just that.
When setting the b-screw with SRAM and that tool, doesn't the suspension have to be in sag? Is there a way to do it without the being in sag?
I laughed out loud at the rotor alignment
I didn't realise I'd been doing it wrong all these years, it'd better make me go faster!
@@sandy_knight I think it will make you stop faster AKA shorten your braking distance
How long was the build beginning to end?
"(if) a jobs worth doing it worth doing twice"
Does Park Tool have a weekend course or week courses for hands on experience?
I am not rich by any means but would spend $$$ to take classes in this!!
There are Park Tool Schools around the world, you can check if there are any in your area.
REI offers courses on bicycle maintenance
@@yonglingng5640 nothing in Florida Miami area.
I don't just want a school. I want CALVIN
@@mrmotomoto thank you. I don't want education in bike fixing. I already do that.
I want CALVIN to show me his techniques
I would say both top and bottom chain runs must be parallel for the perfect picture
This is a rare moment for me that I saw Calvin build a whole bike
Photo protocol: upper and lower chain runs parallel. In this case, smallest sprocket.
I think Calvin used all the park tools in their catalog !🤔
Am I using too much grease on my bikes? Calvin had none in the headset and only used locktite on the bb-threads?
Calvin is a Doctor
Genius at work, I care. How about a fully rigid, 29x3, Gates and Pinion 15speed,....with fully upright seating position and comfy seat. Like a beach cruiser with all the gears. Please?
I never watch Calvin Jones without picking up a tip.
Great video! Beautiful bike!! What is the name of the level app?
it comes on many phones already loaded as "Measure".
Nice to see someone not continually trying to push the last wireless drivetrain. There's just something about mechanical...
Some minor hickups 🤓 🙂 but very cool to watch You, dear Colleague ✊
Photo protocol middle sprocket
The safe bet
There's a guy who knows how to Own his Pink Zip Ties ! ; )
why did you have to use a tool to get the rear derailleur cable through the housing?
Some bikes are "lined" with internal guides for the housing. Some are semi-lined, so the guides goes only part way.
In the middle with optimal chainline.
it is like Dream Build with a touch of silly
no anti-seize or grease on the freehub body?
No
Sweet looking new rig Calvin, enjoy. Guessing you clocked that axle on the fork properly after the video was shot ;-) For photos, bike should be in the gear that puts the derailleur cage pointing down at 90 degrees to the ground ;-)
On the whole 1x systems being the Bees Knees, gona have to disagree with ya on that one after working on quite a few and seeing cassettes having to be trashed because there are only a few regularly used gears, which wear out long before the rest and start to skip/give trouble, not good IMHO, not an issue with 2x.
💙💙💙
Anybody know the name of the beat at the end of the video?
What is the tool or mount holding the wheel at an angle when Calvin installs the cassette?
Probably the WH something
Update, the WH-1
Yep! It is the WH-1 Wheel Holder. (We make a WH-2 as well)
So I grew up being told to grease every bolt on the bike during builds. Do you do this?
When appropriate yes. A liquid lube is often faster and as effective.
Where is all the grease?
Your own personal build I'm assuming?
It is Calvin's new ride, yes!
👍
What was that tool that he had in his one hand at 17:38? It’s silver
That is SRAM's B adjustment tool for eagle drivetrains. It helps properly set the B gap, which is how far away the upper pulley sits from the rear sprockets.
I voting for biggie-smalls in terms of 'photo protocol'
I'm a little disappointed at 5:07 when Calvin didn't use his own "otter with a rock and a clam" method of setting the star nut.
3:14
What's the level app called?
Its just the measure app included on iPhone
@@parktool i never even saw that on my phone until now. thanks as always!
We need a new tutorial on how to bleed sram bleeding edge brakes!
Our SRAM bleeding video does go over the use of Bleeding edge.
But im told that with my brooks leather saddke it nose up just slightly
nice bike bud... my hero... dude can probably setup a derailleur with eyes closed
7:28 Me after two hours of trying
🌟👍👍👍
Photo protocol : needs mud
4th gear for photo call. kinda mid range.
😻🤝👍
gta backsound
Personally I like taking a photo with the smallest sprocket on since it just flows with the whole bike better.
The rear derailleur shape when on the largest sprocket is just too jarring for me.
Why is anybody making bikes that require zip ties to hold a cable in place? My wife’s inexpensive, mid-1980’s hybrid has nice braze-ons that the cable housing just slips through. Zip ties just scream, “We’re too cheap to do it right!”
They don't require zip ties, they're supposed to use a small clip. Working in a shop I can tell you everyone hates those little clips so we all just use zip ties cause they're easier. The other part too is if the braze on breaks off, how do you route the cable?
@@d.b.cooper170 If a braze-on breaks off, then you can use a zip tie!
@@markholm7050 lol. Well played
