- With death at the forefront of everyones’ minds during the Coronavirus outbreak, it's no surprise that one of the biggest memes to come out of the COVID 19 pandemic is a video of Ghanaian pallbearers dancing with a coffin at a funeral. The men in that video became known as the Dancing Pallbearers, but in Ghana they’re known as Nana Otafrija Pallbearing and Waiting Service led by Benjamin Aidoo. VICE meets with Benjamin Aidoo and others involved in the creation and proliferation of this meme, to investigate the video's origins and why it resonates so strongly in the current state of the world.

ye
Celebrating their life, rather than mourning their death.
czcams.com/video/P3ajM1fOc0I/video.html 1
celebrating their death
Many cultures around the world celebrate 🎉 the death in a family
@@Shrek_Has_Covid19 Why would they celebrate death? They are dancing to celebrate the life one has lived.
As said in the video, they dance to stop people from crying, to make then celebrate.
dying is funny
This meme was loved by everyone all over the world
But now its forgotten
Facts

czcams.com/video/uA-jBLYofSU/video.html
Ghana literally owned the internet early 2020 🤣🤣🤣 it was so iconic!
i know they aren't getting compensated for those damn toys or billboards and they absolutely should
That’s what I thought too but they did mention at least one company that approached Benjamin with a licensing fee offer. I don’t think they’re very worried about the money.
@@bluesira in the beginning of the video he explains that he developed this as a way to help his struggling family. I think that the money aspect is very important to them to try and raise themselves out of poverty as well as to enlighten the mourning families. I hope they are compensated very well. They deserve it. ❤️
I was wondering if anyone else would comment on this. They need to get a lawyer and patent their likenesses at least.
Somewhere 6 feet under the soil of Africa a man will never know he become the greatest meme of the decade
Old woman actually
Oh jeez 😂
It’s quite simple.
If they don’t carry me when I die
I don’t go
Haha
This cracked me up😂😂
I feel like it eased the fear of death for a lot of people, seeing somebody dance with a casket. It’s just funny.
Well said
Thanks for covering. Love from gh
czcams.com/video/P3ajM1fOc0I/video.html 1
this man is LEGENDARY! i appreciate his story and how it affected his outlook on death. 💕
Thank you Benjamin 🙏. Not all heros wear capes, sometimes they were multicolored suits and dance with coffins ✊💪🤘
Amen
I am glad to see these guys Happy.
czcams.com/video/P3ajM1fOc0I/video.html 1
Does anyone realize how special the man in the coffin is? Man got accepted by the whole internet.
Just the fact they are dancing with that heavy coffin and making it look feather light is incredibly impressive.
The guy is really humble. Glad he went viral!!
*Celebrate the life not mourning the death*
My man's telling the truth...
Benjamin's laugh is so wholesome
We called them "Dada awu" means "daddy is dead"🤣🤣
Dancing with a casket! They have brought a whole new funeral culture to the world! They broke people's stereotypes!
You would definitely know a lot about death North Korea😒
@@majeedmamah7457 Of course, I do! Seeing dead bodies on the street every day was part of my daily life.
He's how I imagine death: funny, sweet, wants us to enjoy and cherish life, but to also be responsible about our safety, and when he takes you away it's with a smile. What a cool guy.
Benjamin is a superstar now, thanks vice for shearing this love from gh🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭
Wish I had had the means in October to fly them out for my husband and sons' funeral. They would have loved it. Both the living and the dead!
So sorry for your loss.. Celebrate their life
🖤👑🙏🏽
Sorry for your loss
Sorry for your loss
"Always keep in mind to stay safe. Otherwise you are dead and you gonna dance with me" - Benjamin Aidoo
im ghanian and the funny thing is these arent the only dancing paulbearers around, u can hire them theres a lot
Stayed in Ghana for 18 years..... surprisingly never saw any of them
Also here in Suriname
"The president of America tweeted it" lmaoooo
First of all thank you for covering the story behind this! To the guys to help the families help the grieving families bring more then just tears. Thanks you sir's!!!!
U guys always dig up any story and bring us the reality. Love your content it's informative.
Not always..
@Jon Dorsey Nah just being factual, he said "always" and vice definitely doesn't "always" bring us the reality.
Vice is hit or miss with some of their stuff, they have both really good and informative content and content that makes you go "wait what?"
@@owenreynolds9599 Definitely agree.
I’ve always interpreted the dance as celebration of the dead one’s life and saying goodbye one more time happily. It is very respectful and accepting of mortality i think.I’m glad they had someone to explain it, I will definitely need to watch the BBC video for more info!
One of my favorite Vice videos ever. No agenda in this video, which I very much appreciate.
MY FRIEND: If that was my funeral I'd be telling them to put me in the ground already! 🤣🤣🤣
ME B4 👀 THIS: I don't want a funeral
ME AFTER: How can I get them to come to America for my funeral? 💯
I have always loved the idea of celebrating someone someone when they die rather than grieving for their death. My grandpa was layed to display in his home when he died. And I sat their with brothers, sisters and cousins crying for a bit crying at first and later on just talking about him and laughing about old stories with him still in the room it was weird but also beautiful in a way.
This is one of the most liked vice videos I've seen in a longggggg time
this meme is always 'Ghana' be awesome😂 to benjamin & his crew, thanks u for this🙏🏼
Dude this is my favorite meme bring it back
Nice vice really keeping them honest. Never been so let down in my whole life and that’s saying something.
"You know the lifespan a person has spent on Earth. You know what a person impacted in you. you know what a person did for you. So you need to celebrate that person"
- Benjamin Aidoo
Vice coming in clutch with the information we didn't know we needed to hear.
I lost my dad recently. This really helps.
Thanks Vice. Keep up the positive messages for your viewers.
Stay strong and stay positive dude :3
things will get better soon
Dunno what you're on about, this was an epic meme waaay before corona. You guys always do this - you have a brilliant idea and then you slack in delivering it.
Big Ups Vice ❤️
Showing is love instead of painting everything we do in a negative way.
that grief specialist definitely looks like he owns a skin suit
💀🤣
Of course he does, he's clearly wearing it
😂😂😂😂✌🏾 VICE covers the most overlooked topics Thank You
The Nate Robinson meme is my favorite 😂

Yes, its happening, such an amazing meme.
“The gift of the meme is that we’re all talking about grief”
Someone evict this guy from his house
Lmao I've never rolled my eyes so hard.
Sir Smokee Fortwence I hope to god they didn’t actually give that guy any money for pulling that doozy out of his ass... I could’ve come up with something better than that in a drunken stupor
You missed the point big time.
@TAHLIA Croft ah man why why do you share this link it's supposed to be about a meme but this isn't funny your gona offend the gays xD
why
Yes vice. These are the videos we needed
In Africa, death or a funeral is a celebration. One wants to just remember in a non-mourning manner.
Kind of just celebrating one's life. Like a last birthday.
I'm not sure if that makes sense..
Africans just have a different take on death.
@@Treysorable it makes sense and a great way to put it
I love their quote " stay at home or dance with us"
I shared this too all my friends 😂😂😂😂😂
What a genuinely nice chap. They've got a better way of dealing with death over there, not the modern Victorian idea that death is a purely sad thing.
Take me back to March I miss the memes
Truly an awesome meme while it lasted
It's been a long time since I am moved by vice coverage. Good job for this one vice. Good job.
Am I the only one who wants these guys to host my funeral?
This is what I call going out in style lol.
this is some vintage vice right here. more like this please.
How refreshing it is to hear the world responding to what is now so abnormal, but so necessary to appreciate life. Celebrate the dead.
My reaction to the title was 'dead meme, bad vibes Vice'... But after watching the video: impeccable vibes, grear video
This meme really helps in with the death of my father, it helps me ease the grief...
I love this series.
“The gift of the meme”
A glorious gift indeed
You know this meme has risen to a level of godliness when the new cod game has a coffin dance Easter egg in zombie mode.
What a unique and brilliant art. I'd be honored to be celebrated with such a skill.
lol can you imagine the dead body bouncing around in the coffin?
if my funeral isn't this lit then im not going
The Dancing Ghana Pallbearers are still Rocking 2020!
we will not forget about this meme.
Vice News really put out an 11 minute video about this meme. I can respect that. Lol.
Wear your mask or you'll be dancing with Benjamin.
Thank you Benjamin for making many people laughs during pandemic. Peace & love!
I love this this man dose the family and the world a huge favor
Best meme of all time
czcams.com/video/P3ajM1fOc0I/video.html 1
The cat ones even funnier though
Fr
If my family doesn't hire these guys they never loved me
If your family hire these guys, they never respected you
I thought it already boomed but came back when corona started popping
Edit. I feel like I’ve seen this a couple years ago but I’m not sure tbh. Feels like I’ve seen it for years😂
Yeah this meme is old
Dancing during funerals is a very common traditional practice in many parts of Africa, especially if the deceased was an elderly person or some sort of traditional leader. I do however think Benjamin took it to a whole new level by making it more obvious with the well-tailored uniforms and well-practiced choreography in the COVID-19/social media era.
Now this is why we subscribed
This is the most convenient time for this meme lol it's so relatable to our world's current circumstances regardless of its inception.
Last time vice was this early, I wasn't conceived.
I guess thats what you call going in style.
This is so late but I still love it
Vice then: Today I am going to interview a cannibalistic african war lord in the war zone
Vice now: Haha look at this dead meme
That first doc mad me start watching vice once they sold the company not so much
I wont die unless my coffin is carried like this
Lol
I have never seen any video relating this meme with COVID-19
Great job vice, only 5 months late to the show
I was hoping Vice interviewed Tony Igy and Vicetone for this video. Would have liked to get their reaction to the meme.
Other than that, great documentary about the dancing pallbearers!
4:56 Reminds me of Plague Inc. 😂 Like the entire world is infected excepting Greenland and Madagascar X)
If these guys don’t dance at my funeral i’m not coming.
You're already dead so how can you come?
Hol up-
In Indonesia, this dance went into a tv show then became a dead meme. So bad those tv shows used this beautiful meme so they can attract tv rating.
One thing for sure, this pallbearers meme will always be memory for us indonesian during the pandemic.
We even used our version of ‘koplo’ from a song for this meme.
Keep being creative, Benjamin and team! 😆
What a wholesome guy Benjamin is.
This meme got me thru quarantine
My friend has a terminal diagnosis and wants these guys to carry his coffin lmao
man sounds like michael dapaah when he's doing doctor ofori
There's even a mod for the video game GrandTheftAuto 5 of these guys...when the player gets killed, these guys pops up with a coffin and starts dancing lol
Mod**
This is BEAUTIFUL 😍
This meme represents 2020 so well
@2:20 "This meme went ASTRONOMICAL" harharhar, I see what you did there ;)
sending the right message by celebrating the life of a person instead of feeling bad that the person is gone
The best thing that came out of 2020
