  • I've been very excited to share this video. This was my first large scale reenactment and we had a blast. The organizer and team really put together a one of a kind show. I had some fun conversations with guys from all over the country there to be a part of something special.
    I didn't have much of a plan for filming. My first spots were really loud and I wanted to make sure I captured the battle sounds as they were. The event started off sunny and quickly went to rain, with dense smoke blanketing the area. That mad for some challenging filming conditions. I gave the camera to my wife, and I launched the drone. I had called GB Regional Airport earlier in the week for permission to fly. The rain was so hard, I couldn't see my screen nor much of what I was filming. I did my best to center things and stay away from people in case the drone malfunctioned due to the rain. I kept the lens angled down to hopefully avoid rain drops.
    Hope you enjoy!

    I’m glad to see folks are still going out there to do this. It’s a far cry from 1998 when we had more than 12,000 guys lined up for Pickett’s Charge. There were 25,000 reenactors there over that weekend.

      In all of my reenactment years the 1998 Pickett's Charge is probably the one that I remember most vividly. That was actually the last mega event that I did. I was in the actual Army and things got out of hand a couple of years later. I'm retired now and still do some living history presentations at small local events but I will never forget the 135th of Gettysburg.

      i think they could do a movie about shiloh but there is so much detail and drama to cover: the initial pre-dawn contact, sherman refuses to believe it's an actual attack, grant hears the guns and steams down the river, the thousands cowering at the river's edge, hornet's nest, johnston's death, ruggle's battery line, the gunboats. i haven't even mentioned the SECOND day. then forrest's almost-lone charge at fallen timbers. They'd never be able to cover all that in a 3 hour movie.

      7th Tennessee, 10th Battalion guy here, We flew as many flags as we could but when you have to merge companies of soldiers in the reenactments the purpose of carrying the flag kinda loses its meaning. My Company only had 3 guys left for this battle cause most had to leave prior and we had to merge with another company, most of 10th Battalion was actually made of like 6 companies put together. You can see our Battalion at 0:41 seconds, with the Colonel wearing the blue pants and tan hat, im wearing blue pants with a grey jacket and black hat on the right.

      Re-enactments on the actual ground is pretty disrespectful to those that fought there.
      I re-enacted for a number of years and by far the least enjoyable part of any weekend were the battle re-enactments. I would go so far as saying the only re-enactment that was worthwhile was the 150th Antietam “Maryland, My Maryland” cornfield fight. And as good as that was the whole thing sputtered to an end when someone got injured in a firearm mishap. We all stood around wondering WTF was going on and were just sent back to camp to pack up and go home.

    • @General_Dave_1
      @General_Dave_1 Před rokem +3

      We were just using black powder. That means we were firing blanks. No bullet, no anything in the barrel. Some people could die doing this stuff so we are actually instructed to fire higher than their heads because there is still a risk. Generally speaking we fall over dead when we want to, be it we run out of ammo, didn’t want to fire alot of rounds, or we had enough fun and want to fall over. You can coordinate falling over with an enemy shooting in your general direction and take a “hit.” Its pretty fun.

    Wow. Ive reenacted for 30 years. My dad started after seeing the 125th and I stopped after 2012 because of the obvious historical in accuracies. I got sick of seeing 100 or more females cross dressing as union men. Nothing is more obvious then a female on horseback crossdressed with her appendages flopping around no matter how homely they are they couldnt fool a child... I miss reenacting and respect my compatriots that still do it but that is just plain ridiculous... my last straw was at gettysburg in the 2008 when i saw 80 women cavalry on horseback. My fiance was laughing her ass off... i wish i had the video.

    Wish they could do a reenactment where the good guys win.

    it's still a show of battle or maybe a skirmish, oh god there are only 14 thousand less performers of this stolen battle, it's sad what is happening in the states, and the nation is watching and silent

    I don't understand why people keep lionizing this ill-concieved, murderous, failure of an attack. Both Pickett and Lee, especially Lee, should be condemned for the wretched tactics involved in the action. The attack is on the same level as the brutishly concieved attack on the Somme in WW1.

    Boy, video proof of mainstream civil war reenacting’s last death rattle. Cool video, but the hobby is a ghost of what it once was.
