I've seen black reenactors fighting on both sides. There's some black specific units in the Union army as well. It really depends on where you live. If you're in the South there's more Confederate units, and more Union units in the North. Look online for any local units and give them a call. We reenactors take anyone regardless of race and skin color that has a passion for history.

Did this for twenty years, loved every moment of it, it's learning, teaching and experience something you can't just get from reading a book. Comradery is great, experiencing what the soldier did in the 1860's without actually dying. I didn't regret any moments of it ever and I hope the hobby never dies off. Kids can learn so much from this!

I hope all the confederate flag hysteria doesn't affect the reenactors, because they present living history with no bias. If there is anyplace the flag belongs, its with these dedicated historians.
Footnote: It would be a wonderful acknowledgement if the Federal Government would stipend each reenactor a few hundred dollars a year to help with their costs of maintaining this important historical pageant.
