Fantastic idea love the French cleat flexibility as many of my props and dioramas never quite fit a standard shelf setup !!!
Someone gets it! This is the thesis for this project.
freedom cleats :P
Agreed! The French cleat system is a great idea. So many options to display my Star Wars collection using that one idea.
One thing I always appreciate about your videos is you include when you make a mistake. It's so easy as a less-experienced maker to compare yourself to content creators who seem to make "perfect" projects for their videos, when in reality, we all make mistakes! Accidentally flipping the dado blades is something I know a lot of people would cut out.
I'm not special, I make mistakes. I assume that someone else out there may make the same mistake.
Agreed! Mad respect for the transparency. It makes everything feel more accessible because if someone more practiced still makes mistakes, I can forgive my own mistakes without beating myself up over them.
I work with a guy who’s been making for 25 years and made furniture for Buckingham Palace, he made mistake the other day. Sometimes it just happens!
I never thought of utilizing a French cleat INSIDE of a cabinet. That is a clever idea that I will certainly take advantage of!
That was our silly revelation. It is such a simple and logical thing to do
Wonderful display Bob and gang! Very cool way to utilize french cleats!
Can’t wait to move into my place. Been watching ILTMS for a few years and I’ve been so excited to find a house to start taking inspiration from some of your projects. Thanks Bob!
Good luck!!
Dude same! Refinishing the floors is the last thing that needs doing before moving in and getting to the really fun stuff.
@@TheIdeanator nice man good luck! I bought the plans for his miter station and that’s gonna be first build. It’s crazy the things we consider fun as we get older. I never thought demo’ing houses and refinishing floors would be things I’m excited about years ago, but here I am ready to make this house my own!
Great work Bob. I work at a small regional museum and use French cleats regularly for exhibition and storage purposes. We have a gallery space designated for temporary exhibits; cladding the walls of the gallery in French cleats would not only increase flexibility and security of artifacts displayed, but they would also reduce the unavoidable, repeated need for wall repairs.
This has inspired me to put a proposal together.
I love watching Bob when he's "Bobbing" things up...
I cannot tell if this is dig or a compliment
@@Iliketomakestuff Yes, I mean to be fair it's a bit of both... Love the content you put out and the projects you have made, duplicated your pool noodle throwing axe/knife thing. Mistakes happen and can be comical but also a learning experience, best to share so others can learn when they do happen.
Love the adjustability of the cleated shelves and your right it does blend in nicely. I think this idea will work great to display different items for sale at an antique booth. Thanks
BOB YOU ABSOLUTE GENIUS!!!!!
I've made a shelf a long while ago and realised I designed it very poorly to where it became unusable for displaying collectables!
A French cleat would solve my problem!! This is exactly what I'll try and recreate now! What an amazing project and amazing video
Edit: I wish I could share what I made for displaying collectables, would be insightful on what not to do I guess-
Awesome! I hope it's helpful!
OK, I may just try this in the near future, this looks great and it can custom-fit anywhere.
Couple thoughts - What about using LED strips with LEDs that put out light at a pretty typical 120 degree angle, and mounting them inside the doors with the 45 degree aluminum channel? And routing out wiring slots in the door frames to make the wiring more subtle would be my other suggestion. I think this would distribute the light more evenly all across the case. You could add a non-angled row at top and bottom to fill in those dark spots, as well.
My other idea would be to make your shelves be exactly where the cleat is, and then make backdrop pieces that have their own cleat and match up to the shelves, then you could mix and match multiple backdrops on a larger shelf, single backdrops to single shelves, etc.
Great display case Bob ! I really like the cleat idea for this, it makes everything so flexible.
Ha, we just discussed calling these flexible and how someone would perceive that word.
i got into miniature painting several months ago, and i think this type of display would work really well to showcase my miniatures. excellent work, sir!
I HAVE TO MAKE THIS! I have hundreds of power rangers megazords and transformers from the last 3 decades of collecting. Never displayed them because I wasn't happy with just having a conglomerate of figures on a shelf. This is a beautiful idea! Thanks Bob, Anthony, Forby and Josh!
Ohhhh balls! I gotta make one of these!! A lot of these!
DO IT!!!
Love this idea! Not only can you make it as big or small as you'd like, the ability to use the cleat system allows you so much flexibility with what you can display.
The background at r2 and 3po is so convincing. I absolutely love it.
I love the design and simplicity of this build. I'm thinking of using it for my car trophies in the garage. Might wanna beef up the wood of the deviders in that case with all the marble.
I really like this cabinet, there's nothing like building your own furniture to display your collection of LEGO/toys/props/etc, that's how I first got into woodworking without even realizing :D One thing I'd suggest changing: make the doors meet in the middle without leaving a gap, with some soft material that seals the gap and keeps the dust out (in case you ever do anything that kicks dust up in that room).
Love this Bob. I will totally be trying to build one of these for my boys bedroom when they get a bit older. Being able to move the shelves around is great!
This was great. I LOVE the French cleat idea. I have a variety of different scales of things I collect, and that's a great way to be able to display more of them in the same unit. I'll add this to my favorites list so I can come back to it when I actually have a house with a room I could build something like this for.
Great video Bob!! Modulear design is way better than normal design!!
It sure is!
Hi Bob. What a cool idea. I’d love to see a video of you talking us through some of the items in your display cabinet too. Metroplex and Omega Supreme 😀 so awesome.
Love the cabinet. very timely for me as I am in the process of building a 16' wide x7 high display cabinet for my family room. Great job as usual Bob!
Such a beautiful shelf. Having the French cleats really allows you to be flexible and change it up as you might get sick of something and want to look at something else. Thanks for video!
I'll just echo one of the top comments here but for real, the fact that you include "mistakes" in your videos and explain how you fix them and how it's actually not a big deal is really useful, because on youtube anything seems perfect since they usually just show the perfect result, often omitting all the failures, while in real life, especially when you're learning, nothing comes out perfect on the first try. These are actually the little things that make me try and mess around a little, otherwise I'd just think that I'm not good enough. Good job!
Thank you for that, it honestly makes me REALLY happy to hear that! Failures are just a part of it, for EVERYONE, whether they want to admit it or not!
Love the LED lighting. Looks like some I found in IKEA. Would have been a lot easier to use them on my display cabinet but they hadn't come out yet. Ended up using self-adhesive LED strips, cut at corners with push in corner connectors. Works OK, but could be neater and occasionally the corner connector comes loose, so one strip is white but the next is red.
This is such a cool build, Bob!
One of the things that makes Bob and team great video producers are their music pairing. It's so subtle that it never distracts, but subtly helps make a twenty minute video hold your attention all the way through. I've always loved the guitar tracks, but the retrowave/outrun vibe of some of the music in this one was a welcome addition to the music library.
French cleats for a cabinet interior, love that!
Thanks for the idea of "porting" the french cleat to a cabinet. Enjoyed watching as always.
It looks absolutely amazing. This cabinet would be perfect for the large range of sizes of my collection.
A simple way to make the window doors better is to remove that piece of frame that stands in the middle/center of the cabinet for each door. So the windows would have frame but just on top, bottom and left (right for the other window), almost like a C shape instead of a standard Rectangle shape. This way it would look like a huge window from a distance and it would not block the items in the center of the cabinet. If that plexi is thick, it would not bulge. Plus, it would be a nice design solution as well. Great video BTW! Can I get a discount code on that 360 course? LOL Cheers!
How would you keep the door frame around the window from sagging under its weight
Even thin plexiglass can be heavy in large enough size
Windows are framed all the way around for support
While I had the same Idea, I'm wondering about how much it'll wobble.
@@kyleh3615 You can prevent sagging by using better hinge screws and reinforcing the frame with thicker wood too. It’s doable
@@markusfreund6961 You gotta test it! I’ve seen videos on YT from other countries where they achieve that for small condos. Let me see if I can find a video. YT keeps recommending good stuff. Right now I am looking decor videos from the Philippines lmao
This project came just in time for me. Thank you so much. I've been sitting here trying to figure out how to display my African art and collectible dolls and now I can do that. 😀
In relation to the IKEA comment, getting a basic shelf/cabinet set and customizing it would be a good variation of this project if you don't have a big enough shop to process the pieces needed for a whole cabinet from scratch.
-
Like, you can get a standard cabinet, take out the shelves, and install your own kleets or even just the lights
Not a bad idea. But you may run into issues with the back panel. Ikea back panels are necessary for their structural integrity, but they are very thin. But it wouldn't take much to overcome that issue.
Such a simple idea but you really made it your own!! The touch of the diorama was great as well. I'm not a builder or maker but I am going to try and modify an existing closet in my house with French cleets to better organize the little space I have.
Thanks for the awesome idea Bob!
French cleat inside the cabinet's a good idea. Kudos on that one. One of those ideas I've never seen, and seems so totally practical and a good idea. Well done, as always.
I like how you don't have giants shelves running the full width breaking up the view and creating shadows. Looks awesome!
This is the best example of a toy box build ever! 🤣 This is awesome and givers me some great ideas for some existing shelves we have! Good work sir!

Really great, Bob.
The only thing i dont like, is that you can see the leds from the side.
So they need a rabbet.
This is an absolutely brilliant idea. The French cleats is a great touch and allows for a huge amount of flexibility in terms of how you display differently sized items.
Very cool project. Was skeptical of the french cleat system at first but it really looks great.
could watch this stuff all day, my tutor showed us your videos in college a few years back, fantastic stuff. love from the uk mate
Cool, thanks
Actually made my own display case just a few months ago
But this French cleat just gave me an idea, because I always wanted to build my prop wall and this will be a great way of displaying my prop and airsoft guns on my wall!
I am designing a Lego storage unit with 3D printed bins for organizing my pieces by piece and color. But I love this idea for displaying my UCS collection. French cleats makes it modular and not all equal spacing but is flexible for the various sets.
Omega Supreme...loved that thing! Now I'm going to have to go find all my old Transformers.
That's a really cool build. I wasn't sold on it being painted black to begin with, but it grew on me. Definitely needs more lighting though. One change I would make however is having a central post behind where the doors meet. Light leaking between them doesn't look great and with a central post you could easily seal the cabinet against dust.
Bob's house is slowly just becoming a giant collection of display cases and shadow boxes. Great project though, learning something every time!
It's cool that you've made it deep enough for larger items like helmets; unfortunately that then sets the smaller items back into the depths of the cabinet. I'd recommend adding depth to your French-cleat shelves for small things, to bring your objects forward closer to the doors for easier viewing. Or, you could make the shelves different depths, to play with the z axis in placing your objects, in addition to x and y.
Thanks for the note about light placement. I have a similar, but smaller cabinet. Wanted to light it, but never liked the way things are lit with light facing toward you. Light facing IN to the cabinet is much better!
as a former custom framer i can tell ya glass that large gets very heavy very fast! i always recommend acrylic over glass for large pieces with narrow frames for that reason. in this case i think the plexi is a good choice and will make for better weight distribution and longevity of your furniture build
Already watched the whole video. Great vid. Love it.
If someone told me; "You need to unsubscribe to all the youtubers you follow, except ONE" I would without doubt keep "ILTMS". I'm not very practical or crafty but the projects you guys do, gives me some ideas of my own.
Oh wow, that means a lot! Thank you!!
The cleat system is so smart!!!! I need to make something like this!
yess. I had that G1 Metroplex as a christmas gift soo many years ago, was a good day
I'm building a cleat wall for my shop right now. I love that joint. You might consider some more densely packed LEDs as those are very dated looking.
I have been following you for about 3 years now. You NEVER fail to impress me. You inspired me to build stuff and you keep inspiring.
Thanks alot!
Ps. Are you going to make a small christmas present ideas out of scrap wood projects please!!!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!!
@@Iliketomakestuff Of course! Happy holidays!
THANK YOU!!!!, I've been thinking of doing something similar to this but couldn't find a nice way of making it work. but your execution would solve a lot of the ideas i wanted to do in my space.
I may have missed it in the sea of videos and podcasts, but have you ever talked about motivation and inspiration? In this video you make a case to display things that inspire you. I was thinking, there's not much I can think of that "inspire" or motivate me, then it got me thinking about mental health and making. Have you ever talked about this? Thank you so much!
I love the way it turned out! I think it would be really cool to embed magnets to the shelves to make interchangeable backgrounds!
Thank you for this. The design is ideal for displaying Lego builds to keep them dust free and well lit. I'm definitely going to the vebsite to grab the plans. I like the LED strips too, very compact and flexible.
Love the French cleat idea. I'm not a great builder so I would add the cleats to an Ikea cabinet so that I could make use of both regular shelves and the cleats (shelf pin would hold up the front of the shelf while back would still be the cleat)
French cleats are so much more popular and versatile than people realize.
Essentially their the concept behind slatwall, which is used in almost every retail store you walk into.
Fantastic work, Bob! Really well done! 😃
The bookshelf really disappears behind everything you put in there! 😃
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I opened CZcams to find inspiration for building something to show off my He-Man collection and this was a suggested video on the home page! CZcams's creepy all-knowing algorithm saved me a search! Great job, love the French cleat usage.
Nice project!
Thanks!
love the display idea and nice deep cut x-wing pilot t-shirt
Wait. So this isn't the channel ILTMSPTFT(I Like To Make Stuff Perfectly The First Time)? Awesome project and great communication skills Bob.
I would suggest to paint the inside with vantablack. That way, you won't see any cleats at all to distract the display. Everything would seem to be floating in space unless you paint and decorate the platforms the figurine stand on.
I bought the plans and can’t wait to build this! What are your thoughts on either a gloss black, or even gloss white/ivory to let colors/light show the items better?
Great for someone who want to collect model kits or figurines
Absolutely!
Amazing Display Case! Love the LED and French cleat integration. The Star Wars scene give me an idea for a future project as well. Awesome as always!
given what you built, one small change I'd make would to be the addition of some switches. One switch to turn off the door LED's when the doors are open, another switch to turn on some over head LED's for when your doing work inside of the cabinet (both top and bottom).
Wow! I would love to make one for my modular Lego. Love it!
I’ve been looking for just the right shelf to display my Gundam models I’ve recently built. I have cats and have to keep them up high on my current shelf so it’s tough to see them and enjoy them. This would be absolutely perfect. I’m going to purchase your plans and find someone to make it for me. I don’t have the space or tools to do this. Thanks for sharing.
French cleats are awesome, but I would have gotten some clamp style hinges for full glass doors to remove the black bars running up the middle. You'd have to find a new lighting solution, but I feel like the unimpeaded view would be worth it.
This it so perfect! Exactly what I need!
Ooooo that classic metroplex and omega supreme. Veeeerrryyy nice. Cabinet is nice too :)
Thank you, Bob and team for this video! This is exactly what I needed to see. I have been thinking of some sort of display shelf for my large Lego sets and something like this would work really well.
Thank you for another great video. I have been trying to figure out a display for my son's Lego collection. I will build this now.
Nicely done! I like the Lego UCS Slave 1 in there.
I love that you don't shy away from the mishaps you do, that makes you a great maker. :) Love the video, it's awesome as always, stay safe, stay awesome, and much love! Happy holidays!
Love that design. My 2022 goal is to figure out how to best display my collection and will keep the French cleat design in mind. That is so smart and fix’s my different height issues.
When you replace the doors, could you make the inner styles out of clear epoxy to avoid the blind spot in the middle?
That would be cool. It may distort your view, but cool.
This is exactly what I was thinking of for my sons’ LEGO sets!
At the time I watched this there were 100K views. And the fact there were no “dislikes” really tells you something. ILTMS group - you guys are killing it. Keep it up!
REAAAAALLLY cool idea with the french cleat system. I need to make one of these!
You should! we've got digital plans available at bit.ly/3GbE4dA
Amazing idea, thanks for the build!
Great work as usual Bob! I might have to try this one out!
Go for it! There are digital plans available at bit.ly/3GbE4dA
You had me at Tron. 😃
Great stuff as always Bob.
I have no idea of the technical stuff you talk about. Still you are the most watchable of youtube.
We try to make the process seem accessible to everyone. Thanks for watching
On my display case, I added some laser cut frosted contact paper on the inside of the glass. It's fully removable and looks like etched glass. Its an adjustable way to add that finishing touch to a case like that.
I really enjoy your videos. Lot of good ideas. Also I like the out takes at the end. Thanks.
Very cool looking. My only criticism is the two doors. IMO it would have been better with one door or minus the frame on the two edges so that nothing is blocking the view. Love the French cleat idea.
When you redo the doors, maybe include something to cover the gap between them too, since it's lit?
Wow, that looks Awesome!
Can you make some kind of Christmas special again?
...next week. 😉
you mentioned IKEA, and i just wanted to say - this is totally possible with billy bookcases. they even have part glass/part covered doors for them that can be used.
i like how flexible yours are tho, because sometimes the standard size cases just won't work. ^.^-b
I like when Bob shows that no matter how experienced you are, you can always make a mistake, and finding the way to fix this little mistakes is part of the adventure of being a maker.
Very nice job. This turned out very unique and really cool. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work. Keep making. God bless.
You have LOW-LIGHT IN THE PACKING?!?! The lone Joe from NoDakLand?! That's pretty sweet, Bob -- any special reason why that particular figure is featured so prominently in your awesome new French cleat display case?
(Love the Artoo/Threepio diorama "scene," too)
Love the black!
