One thing you have to know is that characters actually have an effect on the gameplay; for example Kirby makes the timing easier. Each character has their own "perks" and some even make the game harder!

@@pipdog9929 Well, yeah but even the worlds best drummer would struggle in the harder levels. Those that are the absolute best at rhythm games can literally do it with their eyes closed as they learn off the pattern completely. What would actually help him the most is not knowing how to hit the drum, but knowing when too. The more experienced he is with music, the better he will be at predicting the next note and timing it, only looking to see where to hit, not when too. So being a good drummer would help in that regard.

It actually recommends putting water bottles in the back to help stabilize it. That really does help but I've found one of those padded 5 pound dumbbells is perfect for the job.

I’ve played this game before in some Japanese arcades, and it’s an amazing experience. You’ve got the arcade lights and sounds all around you, you’re with your friend looking through all the songs deciding which one to choose, and a few feet away from you there are two random kids absolutely DESTROYING some cool song on the hardest difficulty. It’s hard to describe in words, you just have to be there to know what I’m saying. If you ever get a chance to play this in an arcade, you have to do it.

  • @PwnageBlock

This video was such an amazing surprise! I love playing Taiko no Tatsujin. It's probably my most played game on Switch. It's very nice that you got a drum (two , even!) since they're somewhat rare and expensive. I loved the video so much that I'll forgive you for playing with Kirby, hahaha. (just fyi, he's low-key a cheat; makes the game judge your hits much more leniently)
I definitely recommend playing multiplayer. Sometimes it's a bit hard to find a match due to timezones, since most players are Japanese, but you can usually find one easily at night. What's more, you can unlock some goodies (like a free extra song!) by completing online challenges.
Also, you can unlock some cool characters by playing Party Mode. The last character you unlock actually makes the game HARDER, kind of the opposite of Kirby, but it takes a while of playing Party Mode to unlock.
I'm definitely glad you found this game and hope you do more videos in the future! :D

For this game, I recommend using the characters that look like a set of drumsticks (Or Bachi). I find it easier to use that character because sometimes I mix up the Don (red beats) and Ka (Blue beats) and it treats both the same so it feels a bit easier to get back into, or keep the rhythm. That's just my preference.

This game franchise is gigantic in Japan. The arcade version of this game (the original) is so well spread, you can find it in every arcade in japan, it's kind of silly. I love seeing you play this, specially because of how good you are in your freaking first go at it.

This game is very famous in Taiwan, I am so surprised this game can't buy in USA.
And also, you can buy this wonderful game in Taiwan, too. Not just in Japan though.
That electrical drum is about twice price than this game it's self, but I do think if you want to play this game then you need to buy this drum for a better experience.
Hopefully ryukahr can let USA and Europe friends to know this great great videogame and I will enjoy your other 太鼓達人's video.

I played this game for almost my entire childhood. It was in Japanese and I did not understand a word. But the game is so fun that I completely ignored that. I was a child so I did not care much about anything besides the gameplay and the fancy pictures anyway.
Thank you very much for making this video and reminding me of my fun childhood.

As others have mentioned, this game is available in the US as a download, and has pretty significant discounts from time to time. It's normally a $50 game (even as a download without the drum accessory), but I snagged it for only $15 during an eShop sale. While I wish I had the drum accessory, that's a bit expensive to import, so I opted to just play using the controller buttons, which work surpringly well, especially if you use the Joy-Con in the grip or play in handheld mode. The fact that the Joy-Con buttons have very little travel when pressed and the D-pad is divided into separate buttons is actually useful in this instance. It allowed me to press in very quick succession. When I fail, it's usually because my brain can't keep up, not because I'm unable to press the buttons fast/accurately enough. The game supports motion controls as well, but I found them to be very unreliable. The game is supposed to distinguish between DON and KA based on the angle of your downward swing, but it frequently just registered a DON no matter what I did. It also seemed to make my hit timing less precise. Maybe there's a knack to playing with motion controls, but I couldn't figure it out. Playing by hitting the touch screen is a third option, but for some odd reason, you have to keep the Joy-Con attached to play this way, which just makes things more cumbersome. Perhaps if I had capacitive drum sticks (if such things exist) and a very stable stand, this could work, but trying to touch the screen to the rhythm with the system in my lap was too awkward, and again seemed to have less accurate timing. Better than motion, but still not great. Using buttons did take some getting used to, but I became fairly proficient once I did. As a side note, you can drumroll insanely fast by rapidly pressing all the face/shoulder buttons. It hurts my hand to do this though and also messes with my thumb positioning, potentially causing me to miss follow up notes, so I guess that's the tradeoff.
So yeah, throw it in your wishlist and wait to be notified of a sale. Nintendo usually sends me an email whenever one of my wishlist items has a discount, though I'm not sure if there's some setting that needs to be turned on for that. At $15, I was quite happy with my purchase. There is a ton of music included, plus quite a few free DLC tracks, most of which were just released recently. In addition, playing the online mode can unlock even more tracks, though it's a bit of a grind. You basically have to play 30 different tracks over the course of a month to unlock an extra one. There are 10 tracks available to play each week, and the track you end up playing out of that list is chosen at random, so you'll very likely have to play more than 10 matches to see each track. And getting matched with someone can be pretty slow sometimes. It probably wouldn't be so bad, but the game only matches you with people who choose the same difficulty level as you. There's no "I don't care, just match me with someone, anyone, PLEASE" option, so I ended up jumping around between difficulty levels looking for a match. It's not ideal and drags the process out even more. So, it takes even longer to play the full list of that week's tracks. Oh, and to further complicate matters, 2 of the 10 tracks always seem to be paid DLC tracks, so if you don't own them, you can't play them here either, which means you must play all four weeks in order to unlock a new track, and you can't afford to miss more than 2 at any given point. So yeah, unlocking that extra track each month requires quite a bit of dedication. It's not an enormous time commitment, but you have to remember to come back each week.
One other nitpick is the fact that the DLC tracks seem pretty expensive, though it could be on par with stuff like Rock Band. I don't know. I just know it's more than I want to spend. I got so much for just $15 that seeing a pack of 4 tracks for $5 seems a bit high. There are a ton of different packs available, so getting all the DLC could get super pricey. I wish there were a way to get it all as a bundle at a discount. Picking and choosing songs is fine if you know what you're getting, but I'm not familiar with most of these, probably because I'm not Japanese.
Overall though, I really enjoy this game. Get it if you can, with or without the drum. Seriously, I need more people to play against online!

Got the chance to play it in japan, til then didn't knew about the switch version. Was all sold out, walked all tokyo and managed to get one. Tip: try to put a fabric below the drum that way it won't move... or put a water bottle in the space where you put the sticks.
