@@Mclogenog NO WAY
The strogg unearthing the cosmic horrors of Quake 1 only to become its slaves and dooming the galaxy would be such a cool story. This would perfectly mix the body horror of Quake 2 with the Cosmic horror of Quake 1.
Actually, this is the current retconned story of Quake. In Quake Champions, there is lore jointing Quake 1 and 2/4, directly implying that Strogg are doing Strogg stuff, because of Lovecraftian horrors.
@@TGCitizen the only question that creates is quake 2 the future of quake 1? Or are there multiple earths in the quake universe?
@@Supersonicspyro More akin to Marvel Multiverse all connected through dreamlands.
Like what happened with the UAC and Hell, except thanks to the Doom Slayer, we didn't lose to Hell
@@TGCitizen also add the boss of quake 1 expansion Scourge of Armagon :
"Armagon"
could be easy a proto-strogg or even a first generation of makrons and explain the boxes in the first levels in quake 1
I've always had the headcannon of the Strogg worshipping the monsters from Quake 1, so it's nice to see some connection finally made.
Your headcanon was basically exactly what was revealed in Darkest Depths. :) Mine was simply the Strogg War happened after the Slipgate War. :P
The funny thing is that years ago, back when I was a kid playing Quake 2 in 2007 on my dad's desktop, I actually had a whole theory that the Strogg were really the remanents of Quake (the Lovcraftian Overlord)'s cybernetic death-squads that we meet at the beginning of the episodes in Quake I who had been forgotten following Quake's defeat and left to basically realize that they would have to upgrade and conquer to survive and one of the guys in charge ended up pulling a "The Master" and upgraded himself to the point of being nothing but a giant living telepathic arsenal and that's how The Makron was created.
My headcanon is that Strogg are trying to resurrect Shub-niggurah with high tech since her other lovecraftnian entities where killed by ranger and dark magic and hell are kept locked, also my headcanon says Quake 2 it's like 50,100 or 200 years after Quake 1
The virgin vanilla Berserker
-Most of his attacks were cut during development
-Can easily be cheesed by baiting his attack
-Generally a joke enemy best described as a weaker Doom pinky
-Only real purpose is to be a bullet sponge
The chad remastered Berserker
-His cut attacks were restored, which includes a leaping smash and a running melee
-Restored attacks means that he can no longer be baited to death
-Now best described as a Doom pinky on steroids
-Generally a bigger threat that will make you pay more attention to your surroundings
He can still be cheesed and baited as long as you stay close but outside the melee range. If he notices you while you're far enough away though, you're not escaping that jump attack (unless there's a huge vertical distance between you.)
You can jump as the berserker uses the ground smash to avoid it sometimes.
😂😂😂
The connection between Quake 1 and 2 was hinted back in both with some small hints like why the more tech things are in Q1 or something weird in Q2 but also the developer of ID on the server of Champions said it's one timeline. And more so Champions straight said Makron was aware of Shub Niggurath, and some strogg are stuck in the Dreamland here. It was always the case so now it's only more connected than before
I'm actually disappointed of the connection here. Not the "they're part of the same world" part, but on the "Quake 1 enemies created/lords over Quake II enemies" part. I would like it more if the armies of of shub-demonetized and the strogg forces are two totally separate factions. As it allows for the potential W40k-like scenario, of these two big bad MF's squaring off each other.
But then again, just like W40k, they could simply do a "necron" and have the Stroggs suddenly uprise/rebel against their otherworldly masters.
@@CatsOverdrive tbh i always thought the same. I liked the connection thingie in hints and in Champs/dev answers, and it was ok the both were aware of each other. But the fact Shab HAVE MADE the strogg waas very eh
First MGS announced to get a collection release and now a Quake 2 remaster. I feel like a kid again and ready for these amazing games. Quake 2 has of the best OSTs in a FPS. Sonic Mayhem did an amazing job, specially with the track Quad Machine.
The Q2/3 soundtracks by Sonic Mayhem sent me down an Industrial music rabbit hole that has dominated my life since lol
Let's not forget about Resi 4 Remake, Dead Space Remake, Metroid Prime Remaster, System Shock Remake.
We've fully into the Remake/Remaster era.
Their new campaign added to quake in 2021 also seemed to hint that the quake I reality and the strogg reality were linked. The “realm of the blacksmiths” might actually be stroggos before it went to full shit and the people became the strogg.

This mirrors Doom 64's re-release expansion, tying 2016 and Eternal to the lore.
It's almost certain that Hugo and Marty will reveal a new Quake, tying both Q2/4 and 1 together. Personally, I think it's going to be a part of the Doom universe, even if it only ever amounts to references. Then again, a planet spearing spaceship full of Elemental Wraiths in Doom Eternal imply possibilities on a cosmic scale.

I think it might have even been Trav that introduced me to that oddity. I never had a Saturn back in the day.
I have a feeling Xbox is gonna get id to keep this off PlayStation and only make it for series and pc but maybe not because they’ve been releasing all these remasters everywhere. I think it would be smart because the massive pc player base will make up the lost Sony sales and Xbox will bring in more people that don’t play on pc into the Xbox ecosystem because they will go out and buy one of the the series consoles. The number of console sales have been rising after the starfield exclusivity so Phil Spencer is high as f thinking games won’t sell Xbox consoles because it’s already working and will continue to if they follow Sony and keep games off their platform. I think doing that no matter how much Sony users hate it will sell a lot of series s/x consoles or worst case sell a pc to bring them into another Microsoft eco system possibly.
About the centered viewmodel setup, it was always meant to not show the viewmodel in action but it your aiming with projectiles changes from the angle you're using (most players tend to use the centered view for better accuracy during multiplayer sessions).
Hope they’d add in an actual centered view model and rename that one to hidden but overall I love this remaster so much
@@MelTheHal gun_x -7 in the console. works only in singleplayer
Well this was a very pleasant surprise today, I guess it shouldn't be that surprising since they already did a quake 1 remake. I show my dad the trailer and it warmed his boomer shooter heart.
Those monsters at the end make me hope there's a Quake eternal in the future :)
It's still surreal that both remasters for Rise of The Triad and Quake II came out not even two weeks apart. *Nightdive is out here killing everyone with some back to back bangers!*
Really like all the Add-ons they did and the fact they did not charge again for those who already own the game. Very generous and a lot of fun! I have been hoping forever that they make a new Quake game where they tie the two stories together. I think it would be a fire game as long as the gunplay is good and the story isn't corny.
I grew up with Quake II on the N64 and loved it as a kid. Still one of my favorite N64 games, and I’m so happy that it’s been included in the remaster along with the expansions.
I always felt like there was a connection between Q1 and Q2. Why? Because of design of Armagon from Q1 expansion. It looked exactly like Strogg or some kind of Proto-Strogg. I really like small things and details like that. It does not disrupt overall feeling of the game, but enhance it tenfold.
I'm sure Armagon is a proto Strogg or the first Makron, and Quake 1 soldiers are the first Strogg of their kind
Ooooh i hope we get more quake 1 atmosphere/theming in the future, by far my favorite of the series. This seems like a great release!
I'd love to see you cover the expansions one day for Q2. Also this game and especially Call of the Machine gets me so excited about the idea of Quake getting the Doom 2016 treatment. It'd make sense too if the team that did Doom Eternal and TAG were working on it as well, or at least I think so.
Considering the Eternal tie-in added to the Doom 64 remaster... it sure seems that way, doesn't it?
"Shub Demonetized" gets me every time
Finally - the game that desperately deserved a remaster.
I don't care how different Quake 2 is from Quake 1 (even though I liked the gothic/Lovecraft aesthetic), Quake 2 slaps.
I find it really cool how they blend both Quake 1 and 2 together though.
I agree, and if you want a massive map pack download the 25th anniversary unit, it is so good it even has a level select hub like Quake 1!
@@k.w.6626 Eh, I just use the steam version because I'm a normie.
I'm hoping with all this Quake nostalgia resonance we could get a Quake reboot (that hopefully mixes all elements of the series that everyone likes fluidly).

@@Slasher120 I don't understand? Me too? What other version of quake 2 did you think I could be referring to? Quake 2's remaster on steam is also compatible with mods according to the news page.

@@k.w.6626 Oh, my bad. I thought you were referring to another version of Quake, a smooth-brain moment on my part.
The fact we're getting mod support for the Steam version of Quake is exciting though, I don't remember it having that (maybe I just didn't install mods).
there has always been custom map support, the news page says that will still work with the enhanced edition. Things are different with actual mods though but still awesome.

I always preferred Quake 1 and 4's campaigns to Q2, but this looks amazing!
The problem with Quake 4’s campaign is that it didn’t really get good until the last half hour (and it was already really short). It’s been 20 years or more since I’ve played the Quake 2 PC campaign, but I always loved the N64 version’s unique campaign.
@@riflemanm16a2If you got stroggified earlier on I think Quake 4 would've been a lot more fun
@@ZeallustImmortal I mainly remember rooms’ having just one or two enemies in them. Towards the very end, it started to get challenging with a good mix of enemy types and then the game was over. Quake 2 was never shy about throwing the kitchen sink of enemies at the player. I wonder if it had to do with the engine’s ability to handle that much going on at once.
@@riflemanm16a2 I'm not sure the reasoning myself, and you're definitely right about there being very few enemies early on (aside from a few sections where they just keep spawning).
The strog movement wouldn't work too great early on with the current maps, but if they had designed it with stroggification earlier in mind they could've adjusted that
OH MY GOD!!! I KNEW IT!!
I suspect this will be announced during Quakecon...
Update: I FREAKING KNEW IT!!!!
Centered weapon models makes the center of the screen the spawn origin every projectile-based weapon. It doesn't visually center weapons, though it's a thing I expected them to do. On the other hand I understand them not doing it because the models weren't built with center view in mind.
Would love to hear you talk about the Quake expansions since I never knew there were expansions
I was NOT PREPARED for the Quake II / IV split timeline!
That's not confirmed yet. The strogg isn't stopped in Q2 Call of the Machine, only the Shambler leaders were. And since Q2's vanilla campaign, both original expansions, AND Q4's campaign all seem to imply killing of the current strogg leader doesn't stop them, the war continuing into Quake 4 makes sense.
As for humanity still not knowing about the Shub N connection that the Strogg have, its heavily implied that the only marines in Call of Machine that came into contact with the shamblers all don't return from their missions to report it.
So its possible the rest of humanity still doesn't know. Or maybe only the really higher ups know, but keep it classified to not panic the rest of humanity.
Quake 5 that continues bout from q4, q1 and maybe this new expansion. Must come .
I cant wait for an eventual Quake III Arena Remaster at this rate.
I got Quake 2 a year or so back, and seeing the news about this NightDive remaster is exciting. Installing now.
Was surprised to see it on my library. Played for a bit and yeah, it's great
Ant the centered weapons not showing is not a bug, if i'm not mistaken that how it worked in the original (or was it on a source port not 100% sure)
Huh, this explains why Quake 2 suddenly got a big update
2:56 they are just rare enemy types, plus gibbing enemies is pretty frequent, and they can only revive dead enemies that are stil intact
What is "gibbing"?

Yes please to videos on the Quake II expansions, thank you! ❤
Wait, what? You got it early?! Holy shit, AMAZING!!!
Trav, I will bet you money, right now, that id's next fully fledged AAA title will be a reboot of Quake 1 that also serves as a pseudo sequel to Doom Eternal.
Quake is about dimension hopping, as is Doom (especially new Doom), Eternals's fluid movement and platforming have more in common with Quake than Doom. I will bet you anything that what's left of the Maykr transforms into Shubby and friends.
Nightdive is on a roll recently from system shock to quake and soon S.I.N.
I always connected the Strogg to the tech base marines from Quake one. Just made sense.
I think its great and I got Quake II for Christmas 1997. Quake and Quake II are probably the games that I have re-installed the most over he last 27 years and I am brought back to them every few years. I was 16 when Quake came out, FPS were like Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake did something new. I supposed the equivalent now would be playing VR Cyberpunk 77 in VR now after years in normally 3D. The remaster really has brought a new lease of live into this game.
i didnt even know this got remastered too, and i love nigthdive.

Even when I was a kid I thought Shub created the Strogg. Glad to see it confirmed so we can put all the theories to rest
I would absolutely love to see you cover the expansions, yes
Glad to see them fusing the lovecraft elements of quake 1 with the strogg from 2 and 4. Hopefullly the new game we fight both forces
god please bethesda let us get a DOOM-like reboot of the Quake series that connects 1 & 2. that would be so sick. i've been wanting this for so long. i'm also so glad you covered this remaster. great video Trav!
I don't really see how the could connect Q1 with Q2. Tim Willits admitted that Id should have released them as separate franchises, Quake (q1, 3, live and Champions) and WOR (2, 4 enemy territory)
From what what I've read the upgrades in enemy behaviour from Ground Zero are now also in the base game
5:55 John Madden! Football!
It's always a good day when Trav uploads
Humans after Doom eternal:"OH BOY, sure is good living without demonic entities trying to wipe us out"
Shuba and the Strogg: ":)"
I wonder if that's where the lore is going: Quake 1 taking place after Doom Eternal.
Another amazing video as always!
The connection between Quake and Quake 2 makes me want a direct sequel to the original. Ranger needs to make his return. And what would make it even better is if Trent Reznor came back to help withe some ambience and Rangers grunts.
Wishful thinking, but it's all we have going for us right now.
I'd actually be okay with Ranger not coming back. At least not as the playable character. Ranger just is far too similar to Slayer. I'd prefer Bitterman or even Matthew Kane to be the one who returns.
Or better yet, let Athena be the lead. She would REALLY be a protag that stands apart from Slayer.
OOO BOY MORE TRAV GUY CONTENT!!!
This expansion's missions are super fun but also can be quite difficult (which is good), and the connection that they created between Quake 1 & 2 is perfect! Also, you know how people have debated on whether or not Shamblers have fur or skin? Well, they reference that argument in the Shambler's "id Vault" entry by saying that some have fur and some just have skin, finally giving that argument some closure.
The Maykrs and Shub-demonitized are related somehow, calling it. Corrupted they become straight lovecraftian and start cobbling together worlds, consuming what they need and stitching together the rest into a standing army.
Playing the Machine level of Quake 2 currently on Hard difficulty and it is handing my ass to me regularly. Love it! I still think ID needs to make a new Quake game reminiscent of the original Lovecraftian Quake but with vastly updated graphics and MORE ENEMIES on screen. I do miss the mobs of demons from Doom, and modern hardware has the capacity to throw higher resolution models at us. The Quake 2 remaster is doing that quite well in the Machine add on.
Wow just on time as well I just saw the trailer for the Quake 2 remaster just a few seconds ago
I hope this means that Quake is going to be getting the Doom 2016 treatment... Maybe once Quake 3 and 4 get remastered they can somehow bring it all together.
a Quake 3 remaster already exists, that's Quake Live (for better or worse). Quake 4 BFG Edition would be neat tho

Call of the Machine is the Quake 4 we should have got. It's fantastic!
So I played on Hard difficulty, had an awesome time with call of the machine, and actually found the final boss to be really difficult imo.
So the two shamblers kept fucking up my view which then would disorient me into the hordes of mutants, which wrecked my shit.
But the final attempt I had is honestly one of the most intense moments in gaming for me. Just dropping down one last time, revving up the minigun, the roars of the shamblers echoing through the arena, and Climb (imo the best track in Quake 2) booming through my headphones. It was peak!
yes i want to see you play the expansions
how does this man not have a million subs???? WE MUST CORRECT THIS
I’ll be looking forward to getting this on switch
Wow it's amazing how great the Q2 engine is still looking with just a few tweaks and extra effects
Quake 4 can still be canon. The Strogg worship and take orders from the Quake 1 gods but those gods (and their creatures) seem to not want to enter our realm all that much, as evidence in Quake 1 all the base levels that take place on Earth only ever had human enemies.
The reason we don't see humanity talking about it in Quake 4 is because all the marines who came across the Quake 1 entities in Call of the Machine don't return from their missions. The one on the moon dies when the base explodes, the one in the ruins goes crazy and just doesn't come back, and the one who went through the portal and killed the two leader shamblers got lost in a dark nothing void. So by Quake 4, humanity still has no idea the gods of Quake 1 are behind everything.
from the looks of it, the strogg stumbled into quake/the black goat, by pure coincidence. kind of would explain why the portals in quake 1 lead to quake herself; humanity wiped out the strogg but they used their tech, and didnt know that shub-niggurath more than likely planed it all out.
I'm really enjoying this extension!

I love this game but I'm definitely gonna love it more with the Q1 remaster treatment. Super stoked about how streamlined it makes things
A video on Ground Zero would be rad. No idea if it's due to the remaster but it's an insane difficulty spike compared to the vanilla campaign.
heck the remaster NERFED the turrets and enforcers, i heard it used to be worse
it's notorious for its difficulty! at least in the remaster the turrets track you with a laser sight, back in the original version you had to jump into a doorway, take a quick look to see if you can spot the turret, then jump back to dodge its barrage. usually took longer than it sounds, it was simply tedious
I hope Quake 4 remastered comes before any Quake 5 or reboot. I would love to be able to play that again with a gamepad (I prefer gamepads to mouse and keyboard for shooters sue me)
I like Quake II. But I still remember being disappointed when I first played it because I was expecting to start with a Shotgun (One of my favorite game gun types) like in the first game. And I somehow managed to miss the Shotgun in the opening zone so I didn't find one until the Comm Center. On the plus side the other of my two favorite gaming Gun types is full-auto so I had fun once I got the Machine Gun in the installation though doing so was annoying
For a Quake 4 remaster, I hope to GOD they allow an option to turn off Mouse Acceleration (which is forced on with no option to turn it off).
2:55 haha, groud zeroes.

How did you turn on boss healthbar? I can't find it please.

The Darkest Depths levels were so weird aesthetically and level design-wise. They left a weird aftertaste to an otherwise great expansion. Kinda sad I played it last. Laser Eyes and Operation Firewall were my favourites I think. Those felt like they fit, while still adding a cool change in level design. Especially laser eyes felt a bit like how the new Doom games play. Was really pleasantly surprised when I played that.
There are 5 secret levels in 6 of the levels not one in six. There is none i or anyone i know could find in laser eyes and we spend upwards of 40 hours scouring it. Also you do fight 2 shamblers first in the mordir boss battle. Super secret easter egg i see everyone missing is the extra gallery room added to the ID gallery in the base game, there is a switch at the end of ID gallery oppsite the pimp tank that blows up a wall exposing another gallery for for the remaster staff.
Really enjoying this port :)

3:12 On the topic of the view models, I'm pretty sure that 'center' in the original had no view model. At least my version didn't

yep, never bothered using items as a kid, except for whichever one i just picked up. Also before I learned about mods, I thought Quake 2 was a horror game because of the lack of music.
If you're reading this before the super spoiler parts, take a moment, watch the vid, then come back to it.
. . .
they gone? Okay, let's dig into this.
So, here's my educated "guess" as to the whole Strogg digging up the temples/structures of Shub Niggurath. I want to ASSUME that at some point in early Strogg history, they found these temples while digging for normal ore/materials. Let's just say pre full stroggification. Now of course the Strogg had NO clue as to what they were opening so when the first few Strogg passed through a slip gate they ended up in the realm of Shub Niggurath. I don't have a good side name for it so we'll call it the "Quake domain". Sounds cheesey enough to fit. So once in the Quake Domain they stumbled upon all of the various inter-cosmic horrors that lurk inbetween. Because that seems to be a "theme" when it comes to the realm of Shub Niggurath. It exists between all points in time. As in there is technically no "before" or "after" in this realm. Because it is where all timeless things dream beyond eternal death lie. So the Marine probably succeeded in killing Shub Niggurath in the first game . . . but not entirely. So when the Strogg came in, they probably came at a point before the Marine. So by the time the Marine from the first game arrives they've been there for . . . let's say a VERY long time. And thus come under the control of either Shub Niggurath . . . or one of the other lesser entities.
After all, it is the Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young. Though there was also plans for there to be more entities like Shub Niggurath (AKA Old Ones), so maybe they're finally working that in. Either way the Strogg came in at an early stage in their development, set up an outpost, and started to change how their society and biology works. So by the time of Quake 2 and 4, they had figured out how to . . . in a way "transcend" death, if only barely. I mean if we look at all the various forms of the Strogg, while they do take on a humanoid appearance there is a lot that is HEAVILY altered. So it's my belief that whatever the "Strogg maker" was, was an entity that fully shaped how the Strogg came to be by the time of Quake 2.
But this can go ALL SORTS of directions. But yes, i would love a Doom 2016 style of Quake game, please and thank.
I would suggest that when the Strogg found their way into the Quake domain, they enmasse became followers of Shub and went full bio mechanical terror.
Humanity would have suffered a very similar fate, but thanks to Ranger being somehow immune to the insanity that hits you, were spared that fate.
@@christopherstanley4837he's actually not immune too it based on champions lore, he's just able to resist it, ranger technically is nearly insane, his photo of his wife and kid being one of the only things that keeps him from going mad completely
