- Great pleasure to finally present the first air-to-air video with KAJSA and owner/builder/pilot Per Widing.
I asked Per to write something about his project:
This project is inspired by "Gliding and Flying Manual 1932". I started building in 2000. My limited budget has been to my advantage when I have had to learn to do everything myself. It's been great because I never had any timetable for when the aircraft will be ready. I have made all the parts myself out some instruments and components of the engine. Registration "SE-ACW" is from 1930, but was never used. Normally, all the X-rated homebuilds today have X in their registration. An exception was made for me and 2010 reserved Swedish Transport Agency registration "SE-ACW" for my project. The name "Kajsa" is an old Swedish female name. My Kajsa was originally a Kaja (a Jackdaw) who my mum and her brothers raised up when they were children. Kajsa was so imprinted on the family so she refused to return to the wild, even though she had to fly free. My mother, in turn, told stories about Kajsa when I grew up. The little bird's name now get through my airplane fly on for a hundred years and more.

I learned in a PA-11 Cub and flying in anything with more than 100HP is just "transporting", not flying. I have always wanted a Pietenpol (Model A engine ONLY) and many years ago when BH was still alive I bought the plans from him but never built it. Now my wife thinks I am too old (80) to start flying again. Watching you fly it brings tears to my eyes. Its beautiful.

Your airplane is gorgeous. The paint job really softens the hard lines of the airframe. That lovely straight wing!!! Your attention to detail is wonderful...the wheel covers...the engine, propeller...windscreen! Oh my, what a beautiful ship.

Aside from that radiator being smack dab in the way of the pilots view, that plane seems like a cream puff. Exellent video resolution. Other posters could learn allot with this vid on what HD really means. I'm not a fan of music in these gearhead documentaries, but most people like it, so I'll get over it. Thumbs up !!!

Let me just add that I have a set of plans signed by Bernie Pietenpohl, and spoke with him on the phone many years ago. I felt as though I was speaking with a true aviation pioneer. I've wanted to build one for decades!

Great film. I know that many Pietenpol's have the Ford engine with the radiator blocking the view forward. How can you "see and be seen" if your vision directly forward is blocked? Seems like you would be more likely to be involved in a collision.

Hi guys...I was wondering about something.. I seen a none flying Pietenpol that was built in the 1950s I believe, that had a Ford model A engine.... Has anyone considered another model Ford engine? It seems like if these were flying with the A engine it could fly with a modern straight six or something. Just wondering out loud. Lol
