He was shot twice while protecting his friends, and his injuries eventually forced him to face a choice to amputate his leg or continue to live in excruciating pain. MY STORY //
Fourteen years of pain and failed ankle surgeries brought me to 2018, when I made the difficult decision to become a twenty-seven-year-old below-the-knee elective amputee. This channel is to document my journey of amputation surgery, recovery, and reclaiming my life.

You seemed really at ease talking to Josh, Jo. Although y’all became amputees through different circumstances, it must’ve been nice/comforting talking to someone a few years ahead of you on their amputation journey! I’ve said it before, but as a person born with a foot defect/dealing with multiple surgeries/living with chronic pain, it gives me comfort to know that the most “dramatic” decision regarding my leg doesn’t have to be the scariest! Keep up the great content, Jo! And it was nice getting to know you too, Josh!! 💜

I'm not an amputee, don't know any amputees. I would see an amputee in my daily life and think to myself "how did that happen" etc. but never really wondered what goes on "behind the scenes". Thanks to you and now Joshua, I can understand more of the mental challenges that come with being an amputee. Thanks for introducing me to Joshua, an amazing guy. And you are amazing too, Jo.
Do you know the Terry Fox story? He had a leg amputated due to cancer and then tried to run across Canada to raise money for research, but the cancer had metastasized and he didn't finish. He did however make it a VERY significant portion of the way I think from Newfoundland and at least through Ontario.
Yup, he had to stop in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Yes, I remember Terry Fox, and I also remember how he mentored younger amputees. The CBC interviewed him with younger amputee, who couldn't run but could ride a bicycle, while Terry Fox could run but couldn't ride a bicycle...

Joshua thank you for sharing your story with us. I’m sure there are people watching who can learn a lot from you. As a survivor of trauma I agree with seeking help and working at getting better mentally as well as physically. It was a pleasure listening to you both. 😁
I was also able to prepare for my amputation last June and I can not imagine what it must be like to lose a limb to a traumatic event. I’ve met several amputees who lost their legs because of a traumatic events. All of them told me that the most difficult part of becoming an amputee, was having to mentally come to terms with it - literally going from having two legs one minute, to not. I am genuinely thankful that I had the time that I had to prepare for having my leg amputated.
this video is exactly what i needed.. im currently facing LBKA and like you said, knowing something like this is going to happen is a total mind mess. its crazy because i am walking like you said, not without pain or issues, but i can. so its very HARD to get around it mentally. great conversation you two had and im glad you shared it!

Jo, you're still walking with your toes (prosthetic) pointing outwards. Just an observation for you, I know you talked about trying to work on that.

@@FootlessJo No problem. It's not a criticism or anything just observation. I think you're still doing great so soon after your surgery. In fact, I only worry that you may be overdoing it too much but you will find your balance in time!
@@FootlessJo It also appears that you are using your hip more on your right side than on your left
@@FootlessJo I heard that was your hip making your toe point out.
If it is caused by your hip you may want to go to a chiropractor or massage therapist to help your hip go back to where it needs to be. My right hip used to be lower then my left and going to both of those they was able to get back where it needed to be.

Its crazy, all we amputated has our own stories, and as a group we end up here watching these videos. This is in itself a fellowship.
Wow. Sincerely impressed by this. Please know that this is more than helping people cope with amputation or lack of mobility. This is helping with all adversity. With being optimistic in the face of unbelievable challenges. I truly believe that channels and stories like this can save lives. That's how important what you're doing is. You are the safety net that can catch people from falling in their darkest times. Thanks for that.
I never had to make that choice for myself. My parents made the choice for me. And I am 100% sure it was the correct choice, hard as it must have been for them.

I have a partial foot amputation and live with pain every day and listening to him talk about running and about everything he does makes me think it would be much better if they would have taken the whole foot. If I do to much walking it swells or gets sore easily. They do not make anything worth a crap for a partial amputated foot.

You guys are amazing and its wonderfull to know that modern technology and medicine today can provide people with amputated limbs normal life... You are such an inspiration not only to people who had amputation, but also to people like me, with all my limbs working, you make me realize that I am wasting my time by not seizing my life and opportunities fully, which is kind of important. We take so much for granted until we lose it and I am trying to be aware of that by following inspirational people like yourself. You are awesome girl! Thank you and keep going!
Wow. His pre amputation thoughts sound almost exactly like what I went through. 3 1/2 years of limb salvage and now four years as LBK. He cracked me up when he said he didn’t want to wait till he was old in his fifty’s or sixtys to amputate. I was 59 and no regerts🤪. Life is good! Too blessed to be stressed!

I relate so much to a lot of the message in this video from my chronic illness- there was a lot I thought I wouldn’t be able to do again when I was really sick. And then I started to be able to again and started to feel so much better when I got to do the things I love again. I’m going to go bring my puppy on a hike and I’m going to enjoy it so much thank you for making your videos, you’ve helped me on some of my worst days and my best days

Such a true warrior and survivor. And I totally agree about the quality of life thing. I am working on being able to walk more than a few steps at a time and doing more with my family. I am hoping my suction socket when I finally get that will help...we shall see.

10:00 I have done a hike in the Grand Canyon it's now illegal even to try because so many people tried and needed to be rescued.
I'm not trying to boast here. I'm just pointing out how much is actually possible, so long as you are willing to try.
I hiked the Bright Angel Trail...what do you men by illegal? It's only illegal in going over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Why would hiking in the Grand Canyon be illegal?
@@morgancalvi6675 It's not. But the particular hike I did is illegal. From south Rim to river and back in 1 day.
You can hike to the river, camp over night then hike back the next day, but doing it in a single day is not legal.
The law isn't enforced unless you need to be rescued. If you need to be rescued you have to pay NPS back for the cost of the rescue *AND* pay a substantial fine.
Depending on how the rescue is carried out it could cost tens of thousands of dollars.
Of course if you do not need to be rescued, NPS has no real way of proving you did it.

The hard part can be wording a question to get help. That is a problem I have with having aspergers. I remember seeing you wanted to do a 5km walk? may be that can be a mid term goal and work up to it. I feel you can achieve it in time.

I think it would be harder to deal with if your amputation was caused by some other person's deliberate action. Especially if you were chosen as a random target.
In a way I think it might be easier, having someone to blame or hate for your trauma... If it was illness, like diabetes, clots... Anything like that.. you get into a phase, might be temporary or could stick, that you hate/blame life/God/destiny, depending on your beliefs, and that makes life so much harder cause then you become angry at everything not just a stranger that you probably will never meet, and might be able to forget about for a while .. that's my opinion based on a loved one's experience, It is of course different for everyone
@@YasmineJess But then that anger eats away at you, and unless you let it go, it will destroy you.
@@erictaylor5462 you are totally right. i am living that with my father in law.. he has diabetes, poor blood flow in his leg led to open sores that won't heal, bypass failed, leg died, below knee amputation... he feels so bad, he pities himself, he is upset it happened, he considers himslef crippled... some days are better than others, it's only been 10 days.. but I don't know how to help him get through it other than making the near future seem brighter, like "you'll have a prosthetic, you will walk again, you won't be in pain (this he can see since he endured so much pain with the almost dead leg and open wounds that got infected)" i am lost and confused but we all try to look strong in front of him
@@YasmineJess Not sure what to say to help you. It doesn't sound like he takes that good care of himself, but it's only too late when the heart stops.
Keep fighting til you can't. That's all you can do.

@10:15 Yes to finding joy in something; when you don't think anything can ever bring you any joy. That's the best. I started dancing recently, my husband and I take a ballroom dancing class once a week. 🧡 I laugh so much during that one hour. It is heavenly.
I think the reason I watch these types of videos is because I just have no idea how it feels to just not have a part of me be there. I can't imagine what that's like and watching this is just kind of neat.

I'm thankful for healthy limbs.
I'm in so much pain in my left leg. Honestly at this point I consider cutting it off my self.
Nothing seems to help.
I hope you find the strength to reach out and get professional help with this. I know ones mental demon can shout louder than everything around you, I know pain can be all consuming...but a professional surgeon will be better equipped to prevent nerve damage. Keep fighting xo
Just found your videos and enjoy hearing about your experiences and how you've managed through it all. Curiosity drives this question - do you find that your gate changes when switching from the walking crutch to the leg prosthetic? Another commenter mentioned that you're using your hip to move your leg, is that the difference? Should you be using your quads instead? Josh's after-story is one we rarely get to hear. So glad he's doing well. Thank you both for sharing your stories.
I was supposed to go to that theater that night and watch the movie. I’m so thankful and grateful that something came up and I didn’t go. It was a horrible thing and I couldn’t believe it when I heard what happened.

But what is it with you Americans that you walk around with cap and gloves but then wear a freaking sweater?? I am wearing a thick jacket, a sweater underneath and a long sleeved shirt and I am STILL freezing! 😅❄
It's probably because they've lived in Colorado for a long time and they're just used to the cold. I have family that lives in Vegas, and I also find it funny when I visit them in winter how wimpy they get in the cold.

Because no amount of wearing a large coat is going to keep the tips of my ears and fingers warm. Her chest is probably comfortable- but places with low blood flow like fingers, nose and ears gets cold far worse/quicker than places closer to the heart.
Do people who got their Limp amputated at a very young age also have phantompain. Or if you are born without a arm or a leg
If they are born without the limb I believe no they do not have phantom limb pain. But I do know that yes young children have phantom limb pain.
