    I run and operate a small logging company in upstate NY and I can say that splitting firewood is one of the best workouts around . I hand split 50-60 cords of firewood a year by hand for my customers. The quote goes "if you split your own firewood it heats you 3 times"

      Hate to tell you, but splitting wood heats you more then 3 times! You just need to look at the full job from harvest to cleaning the stove at the end of the burn and season!
      Harvest,haul ( load and unloading the truck), split, stacking, multiple second hauls (brining to stove and restack next to stove ) ash removal by weekly) chimney cleaning. Then you have the yard clean up of all the chips and bark, just to start again!
      A work out better then any fitness program or gym membership!

    I watched as you tried whacking that first log into submission on that piece of beech.
    I CSS a lot of beech the size you were working on. Because so much beech can be hard to split (especially the diseased ones), I usually start by making a vertical cut across the diameter of the log to a depth of my chain saw bar, then I insert the blade side of the maul into it & whack the maul with a sledge hammer that is about half the weight of the maul. It sure saves on the wear & tear on my elbows.

    I'll say this much, chopping wood can be a very demanding workout.
    Especially if you're doing it for prolonged amounts of time or in the heat and humidity.
    In any case, it will work the hell out of every single muscle group that's being utilized during the execution of each chop.
    💯

  • @michaelkearney5562
    @michaelkearney5562 Před 3 lety +9

    I'll give some constructive criticism if I may. The maul that you are using is too light for the dense timber that you are working on. Strange as it may seem, a heavier maul would make the work easier for you. Nice to see the background with the timber seasoning. There will many warm nights in front of the fire to look forward to.

    I wonder how it would tweak the numbers if you modified your technique to split the way we sawyers do. We sink the axe into a round, then pick the whole thing up, rest it on our shoulder with the axe on the low side, and throw it up high then bring it down straight (with the same action as the original swing) such that the weight of the wood splits the log as it falls on the upside down axe-head. This way, we don't waste time trying to extricate the axe from the log constantly. And lifting the log up on one's shoulder, let alone the rest of the move, is like a whole other exercise.
