- Next-generation fighter jets are infamous for their deadly capabilities that render their predecessors redundant, but what if there were contenders from the past that are even more lethal than their successors? It is no secret that Japan is looking to upgrade its airforce and a legendary aircraft is making a comeback. The YF-twenty-three was designed to be the ultimate fighter and some say it rivals the mighty F-twenty-two Raptor. Can the YF-twenty-three compete with modern fighter jets? Why is Japan’s plan to bring back the fighter jet causing controversy?

Japan content starts at 13:23. You’re welcome.
It's bollocks anyway. Japan hasn't got access to the YF23 designs. This comes around every few months for some reason.
Japan doesn't have the money due to weakening yen and slow economy. The project will likely be cancelled.
worked on YF23. awesome fighter, better than f22
IF japan wants air superiority the YF 23 will be a good option.
YF 23. Simple, elegant & beautiful.
If the USA didn't want the YF23 why not develope it with Japan total madness you didn't even want it by doing this you would both have it and at a reduced cost and a modern version.
I totally agree, love that plane design looks aggressive
Totally agree. Infact have the allies involve in it too.

It might be a bit paranoid but at the time no one else had the tech
It's not that they didn't want it. It was just too expensive to operate the f22 and the f 23. Initially they want to develop both but with the collapse of the soviet union the only where ganna need one
I'm sure you meant to say "35 thousand" pounds of thrust for the engines of the YF-23. What you said was,"35 pounds" of thrust.
the v tail fins are the size of f5 wing. rotate on a titanium gear. roll rate > 600 degrees/sec
As much as admire the F-22; I think that the YF-23 was an even better aircraft!
I liked the 23 better when they were reviewing it.
If I was going Gen-5+, I can't think of an easier starting point than the plane that arguably beat the F-22.
Consider the most likely adversary and the YF-23 is an excellent starting point choice.
NOTHING ABOUT JAPAN
Great history lesson, but nothing more than that!
Good summary but what evidence do you provide for Japanese to use it as a start point?
A 27,000 pound aircraft with 2 engines that produce 35,000 pounds of thrust Each for a total of 70,000 pounds thrust. Even at a max weight if over 50,000 pounds the jet has enough excess power to accelerate in a vertical climb. The only other fighter to achieve this without afterburner is the F-15 Eagle.
These programs are what gave me such a good life growing up.
The nostalgia in these videos.
I'll never get tired of the memories these videos bring back.
At the end of the day the YF-23 is still a 30 year old design
Exactly, and how long are they going to continue the saga of Japan's desire and intention to build this 30 year old design. I'm tired of hearing about it.
@@JohnSmith-fg7rd it seems to keep coming up for some reason. Still an entertaining story.
But better than anything else out there.
It’s actually closer to a 40 year old design. It first FLEW in 1990, which was 34 years ago, but the majority of its design and development took place in 1986, which was 38 years ago. I think it shows just how far ahead of their time the Lockheed and Northrop teams really were.
And the F35 is pretty much the same.
My biological father was on program YF-23 at Edwards Air Force Base.
From 1984 to 1992, I grew up with my biological father working in the Above Top Secret section of the government at Edwards Air Force Base and Groom Lake aka Area 51.
I've supported this idea since the day they deactivated PAV1 and PAV2.. I'd love to see the upgraded version in our Air Force as well..
You might want to check that thrust number! 35lbs is about the same as a strong desk fan!
Actually, I very much look forward to seeing this. I for one, hope that Japan does this project.
Hell yeah and no way! I been commenting saying for the past year or two that the 23 design is a 6 th gen absolutely!!! just update the interior and avionics and things of that nature and ya save tons of time and money and have arguably the best jet in the world! An updated 23 would put a 22 to shame! The US should be doing the same thing!!!
I'm sure Japan can eliminate the problem of stealth loss when it turned. The original model had a exhaust design issue that would require some redesign.
If this comes it will be most likely the first restomod fighter plane in history 😉 and frack did I always had a softspot for the YF-23 over the 22 🥰
I've seen these clips on Japan using the YF-23 and they shoe NO actual YF-23's flying yet. let's see....
BRAVO..Thank you..👍👍✌
Love that design.
the tiles are shuttle tiles. mach 2 full mil power
Come on man the YF22 raptor was developed in the late 90s It is literally old in two-day's military terms especially with the advancement and computer systems
When people look at the exhaust on the B-21. The top part of the exhaust is that of the YF-23.
platform still today has lots of potential and options for modernisation plus carrier capable design
A fighter-interceptor for the next-generation IJN carriers?
@5:32
Narrator says Pratt & Whitney YF-118. While the screen says Pratt & Whitney YF-180.
This is a WIN WIN FOR THE jAPANESE.
Ok, but the problem is, will the United States approve this plane for the Japanese?
the 23 were sitting out in the open on an afb left to rot I took several years for them to be hauled and cleaned up.
15:04 yeah man 34 pounds of thrust is a ton lol
The YF-23 first flight was almost 34 years ago in August 1990. It's hard to believe anyone wants to revive it.
With that argument just remember we're just now flying the f22
@@leepierce8778 The F-22 entered service 21 years ago (hard to believe it's been that long) and the US is already working on replacement 6th gen fighters. I haven't kept up with the F-22 program, but i imagine it's had a ionics and radar upgrades over those years.
While the YF-23 can certainly be upgraded and fielded to be better than most fighters out there now, the question is how much will that cost and how long will it take? The F-22 design was selected in '91 and didn't enter service until 14 years later. And that was probably with a significant portion of the key design team members still on the program. Trying to pull that design out of mothballs may be quite challenging. Don't forget that CAD drawing (2 dimensional) was new during the design. I'd bet there were still a lot of drafting board drawings used to build the YF-23! Given that design started in '86, there might not even be very many 2D CAD drawing on that program.
I understand why the F-22 was the winner, the F-22 revele himself to create deterrence, you need a real good dogfighter to get out of visual rage after warning to the enemy if needed, normally the enemy knows that at least a wingman have them locked and the deterrence works.
@17:04
This is the F-15 fitted with the new internal missile bay. Where the extra fuel tanks where.
I don't think so. They have already started working with the UK on their Tempest as their next aircraft. Before that, they started working on their next aircraft.
Back in the 90s they still considered maneuverability a big part of a dogfight. With the current way of thinking that the vast majority of air to air will be BVR, the YF23 would probably be selected if the contest happened now.
Umm, 35 thousand pounds of thrust (15:05). oops
Just so I'm clear. Is this supposed to be about Japans next fighter or the YF23?
YF-23 with a 2J
usaf didnt allow us to call it black widow
Who is alarmed and why ??
brought to you by the Department of Redundancy Department.
마크로스 시동 걸었구나 축하한다 😮
The YF-22 and the YF-23 are 1986 aircraft designs.
I always thought it was a bad decision to go with the Raptor it's nice to hear that these designs that people put so much time and effort into are still moving forward to protect the Free World
The Japanese have been improving on American ideas for decades, imagine what they could do with this.
Japan joins UK next gen aircraft programme.
Northrop and McDonnell Douglas done a great job on the YF-23 no doubt. But Lockheed Martin is on another level of technology it seems. IMO.
Wrong.
The YF23 WAS superior in almost every way to the YF22.
The YF22 demonstrated higher Alpha, and that convinced the USAF.
The YF23 beat the YF22 (now Raptor) in many aspects during their head-to-head competition, but Lockheed Martin's PR machine was far more sophisticated and tipped the balance with the US military who chose the YF22.
Absolutely. YF23 was a much better fighter. Both Lockheed prototypes crashed and one burned up beyond repair.
This plane and the su57 look alot alike don't you think?
Powerful
Before they build one they need to look if it can carry the next generation of missiles. But it would be a huge savings to use a design that has been paid for by someone else.
So why is this alarming ? Isn't Japan our ally ? Wow, 35 lbs of thrust.
F16 F15 still around
We didn’t want it…let the Japanese go for it…
Was better than the 22, politics drove the choice
It had glaring weaknesses too.
The US does not want anyone to have the advance technology us in and used to create the YF23. Too close to the F22.😊
Save R and D monies. Smart.
Why is the YF-23 “Legendary” it didn’t make it into production so it was just another prototype aircraft that could not make the grade. If the F-22 is going through a huge upgrade then no doubt the YF-23 would have to be brought up to date when it was being re-developed by whoever wants it to happen, but if the USA says no then it won’t happen because the USA doesn’t like sharing advanced technologies with anyone, not even their staunchest allies.
What is a missile with “heat vision” surely you mean “heat seeking” missiles.
The YF22 was chosen for POLITICAL considerations. NOT because it was the better aircraft. It wasn't.
The YF23 IS a legendary aircraft, because it is still being spoken about in awed tones almost 40 years after it was rejected for an inferior design.
Japan has joined UK and Italy to develop the 6th gen fighter Tempest, what is the use of this 30 years old design, pure non-sense
MACROSS PLUS REHASH
"ALARMING" 🙄😂
You really, really need to stop trying to make your script hip and cool. Are you targeting 10 year olds? You also need to proof read your script for basic info. "A whopping 35 ponds of thrust"? You started well and fell off a cliff.
SU57 is a wannabe YF23 🤔😉
It’s not being any controversial talk except on this silly channel
(yawn) cancelled at least a year ago and making the rounds again as warmed over video, at least the voice bot is good enough to possibly be a real human.
your not to good at this are you.
