Still listening in 2023 .
this was a breath of fresh air, genius music. He should have been totally famous.
Loved Crenshaw! I miss the Merv Griffin show! I watched a lot of great music acts perform on his stage, including Wang Chung performing "Dance Halls Days" - my first time seeing them, and the way that band playfully entered onto the stage, mesmerized me and endeared them to me, to this day. 💕 Wish someone can find that video.
Loved this guy! He never had any pretensions other than to craft straight up pop and his albums were chock full of catchy tunes. Always had several of his songs on my mix tapes in the 80s.
One of my favorite songs of that year.
Props to Merv Griffin and his staff for crafting such a fine introduction for a relatively unknown artist, and big props to Marshall and his band for backing up every word of it with this performance. Really appreciate the stunning quality of the remastered video from 1982. Proud to subscribe.
Chris Donato was such a great bass player and showman. It seems that he was never seen again after Marshall's second album. Why?
55westend1 I ask myself the same question. I’ve looked all over the internet and there’s nothing else on him.
Probably because Marshall's career didn't take-off like everyone thought it would. Marshall has said that after "Field Day" he was very gloomy about it's lack of success and was very worried about where his career was going. One could assume Chris (as a hired-hand) picked-up on this and decided he needed to look elsewhere to try and assure his own income - it's a guess.
Great stuff...thankfully I grew up with WLIR-NY , which played artists like this (and Robert Gordon) .
I never knew he was on Merv Griffin!!! I do like the Letterman version better. It's filmed like a psychedelic pop song.
Still a great song. He sounds fantastic. ❤
Sad i was only 14 at the time when this song came out and i don't remember it or even hearing it on the radio ....why ? this song rocks .
Might've not been popular in your city's market area. It was a relatively decent hit, topped out at No. 36 on the Billboard charts I believe.
Mashal Crenshaw AND Charles Neilson Reilly? HUL-HULLL!
YES!
quite the performance! Thanks for posting!
Good song
Charles Nelson Reilly must have spent every waking hour of his life on daytime TV during the '70s and '80s.
Match Game 1973-79.
This version may not be the best but the record is, in my opinion, SO much better than Robert Gordon's cover. Not even close. And Crenshaw's live version on Letterman is pretty great.
+Shawn McLaughlin Agree with you on all points, Shawn!!! Crenshaw should have been a contendah, baby!!!
I agree. But I just liked Crenshaw's better.
Shawn McLaughlin relax bro
The Merv Griffin Show. The lack of energy here is probably due to the fact that they were told to keep it down
Turn your guitar up, Marshall!
Can someone please tell me what kinda shoes the name or style Marshall Crenshaw is wearing? Anybody?
"Two-Tone Brogues" is the type of shoes he is wearing.
@@gagemoss1075 thxs gonna try and find a pair:)
Anyone else here because of Robert Gordon?
Robert Gorden is GREAT and a lot of fun to watch, but dont confuse art with immitation
HIS GUITAR VOLUME ALMOST AT ZERO!
Maybe I’d think about licensing it if you wiped all that schmutz off the screen
Robert Gordons version is better but, I love Marshall Crenshaws work. He's excellent!
Thank heavens for the Robert Gordon version or I would have never given this tune a second listen. Sorry Marshall, you may have written it but I think your version is lacking. Lot's of writers have the good sense to let some else perform their songs, imho this is clearly one of those times. Thanks for the posting, it just makes me like Robert Gordon's all the more.
I see what you mean, i love marshall crenshaw's songwriting and while his singing aint bad, its not in the same league as robert gordon.
Nope, Gordon looks like a damn robot singing, Crenshaw has something that Gordon doesn't. It's livelier and makes you wanna dance ,Gordon makes me want to change the station. The mop is on point though, my style 😎
No way, Tinsby!
