The man wrote and composed Field Day! A record for the ages!
Marshall has got to be in the top 10 of very seriously talented singer, songwriter, musician, killer guitarist ect ect.......that has been underrated for some crazy reason. The guy is killer. His melody's absolutely kill me inside. Loving him since 1982!!!
Ditto!
A hidden jewel is right! Had the privilege of seeing Marshall last weekend, he was amazing! So nice too!
Where did you see him?
At The Turning Point in Piermont NY this past December, he just did a one man show, it was great!
One of my favorite writers somehow not entirely surprised by his wide ranging musical depth and knowledge
Mr. Crenshaw is just so damn cool. I just saw him fronting for the Smithereens. He is such a professional! A great talent..... and he wears the coolest hats!
I wanted to see him last year fronting for the Smithereens. I found out about it after the local concert. He's touring this year with another band. I'm hoping the pandemic madness will be over soon so I can have something to look forward to. I'm going to try and find that radio show. Love MC❤
"A hidden jewel" is right. When I think of underrated, poorly known artists, I always think of Marshall Crenshaw.
Woah! I was so thrilled to see Marshall Crenshaw pop up on "What's in my Bag"! He made one of my most favorite albums,"The 9 Volt Years" which is s collection of Lo-fi recordings he made from tapes in his kitchen. Amazing songwriter and solid guitar player.
get the series of EP's he's been putting out the past few years if you haven't...
Just commented I was listening to 9 Volt. Amazing when you have so little you can do so much….well if you have awesome songs
And he has an album called what's in the bag lol no lie
Love him and his music, for many years.
Still so smart, talented, knowledgeable, and... nice.
Amoeba and Marshall Crenshaw both rule!
Marshall has written some of the best songs ever, a la Cynical Girl, Whenever You’re On My Mind, and The Distance Between. And more……
He is a music nerd! Really knows his stuff!
Yeah I didn't expect these choices!
Big crush on Marshall. :-)
Marshall is just as classic now as he ever was. I caught at a few solo acoustic gigs and he still has the goods to put on a good show. His excellent guitar playing is something you don't process on the records because so many people play on recordings. Just awesome and a total gent as seen here.
He once asked the question "What's in the bag?" in one of his own album titles. It's an amazing easter egg of sorts that he now finally answers it here :-)
Love his music and that looks like a very cool store
If you dig him (and really he is great) you should check out his radio show that mentions in the video. It is good stuff.
Fantastic interview. Marshall is the best! Hope he plays in store next time!
"A Hidden Jewel." Man, that really says it right!
Great musician, saw him live many many yeaRs ago at The New Haven Green❗️
Some day, some way!
One of the best episodes of WIMB!!
A real musicologist.
What a cool assortment of selections!
Not just under-rated (which is often, I feel, a backhanded compliment), but simply one of the best ever!
Was just listening to the 9 aVolt years. Haven’t listen to it since the late 90’s. Love the lo fi sounds. She’s Not You is awesome
goddamn, Crenshaw is amazing.
❤️ Love Marshall Crenshaw!
This is fantastic and thank you Amoeba!
Thanks for sharing what’s in your bag, Marshall. Your debut is one of my all time favorites!
Marshall’s recommendations, Sun Ra the sound of joy,the staple singers uncloudy day, nels klein, Mitch Ryder’s autobio from Detroit, star best! Bollywood, buddy collette jazz flute with earl palmer on drums.
Such an underrated talent, I love his first three albums especially. He's got some great choices quite unlike his own stuff.
I agree, but Mary Jean & 9 Others is great too...
vampyros1 It's a good album for me not a great one, I actually like Good Evening better despite all the cover versions. His version of Richard Thompson's Valerie is rockin'.
'Good Evening' was the first one I didn't listen to over and over, except for 'You Should've Been There'. Either way, you have good taste... Happy listening!
cool stuff checking some of this out and this Marshall guy
Marshall rocks! Cool choices.
Cute!!! Love you Marshall!
Love this guy! cool
Perhaps he should have a Sirius XM channel or at least be part of a group of musical geniuses that have regular slots on a Sirius XM channel. Could interview living talent and highlight their music; highlight their own music, and highlight non-living/non-performing talents' music. Others geniuses like Creedence's John Fogerty, Steve Miller, and others could have slots on the same channel.
Marshall should be a natural as he is soft-spoken and seems eager to share his thoughts, and has definite favorites and musical heroes. (I do not know music. I heard that Steve Miller is a musical genius. I just assume John Fogerty is.)
Super mellow intro track. ^^
Collette, Holly, Rich… who are some other Buddys for the Buddy music hour
Wow. That was actually really interesting...
thanks
You should do this segment with Stephen Bishop! I would LOVE to know what he would choose. I follow him on FB and he is fabulous with his fans.
i met MC last night !! call into my show please!! vinyl tawk with Verlaine on WUSB 90.1 fm !
Those look like the stoney brook call letters. Lived on Long Island for many years and was a dedicated listener, in Cal now and always keep it left of the dial
He must have a good turntable to be buying vinyl casually.
Marshal Crenshaw has gotten more handsome over the years.
"All Buddy" lol
I beg your pardon but this man has no bag. Give this man his bag! Donde esta su bolsa yo
What's the sun Ra song?
JENNIFER STRANG WAS HERE
A one hit wonder who deserved a hell of a lot more fame and attention than he tragically ever got.
It's been a While since it was announced that The ICP Would have one of these "What's in my bag" Web shows... Any word on that? I am subscribed & I am still waiting. Thank you.
Hi phsycopathichomie - It's coming very soon. Look for it in early-mid February.
Oddly he has an album called What's in the Bag 😂
And no one's noticed the comment yet 😂

What the fuck? See this is what blows me away, you get the more straight forward songwriters who write the simplest songs that sounds like everybody else and they're like "Oh yeah, I like Sun Ra" Then why do you write songs like you've never heard of anything that wasn't on the radio? Happens all the time, I don't get it.
I get your point because I've thought the same thing at times, but a lot Crenshaw's music is anything but simple. Many of his progressions, melodies, and guitar abilities are incredibly sophisticated.
