    You are not supposed to stick the food onto the spiked handle, it's to rest on top of the food you are trying to slice and then apply light pressure as you slide the food item back and forth across the blade so you don't slice your fingers.
    If the gap between the blade and the plastic doesn't get bigger when you move the black slider along then it's either broken or you haven't put it back together properly when you tried to change the blade, as it's used to make the slices thicker or thinner.
    I have one of these, almost identical from another store, and have never had a problem with it and use it all the time.

    Hi Keith,
    I just finished watching your video and went through several of the comments. To be honest, I have to say that the real issue here lies with those poorly written instructions. They clearly suggest attaching the food to the hand grip first, which is exactly what you did. So, you weren’t at fault at all-the instructions were completely misleading.
    As for the mandoline itself, it seemed to be reasonably good for the price. It’s just unfortunate that such a decent piece of kit came with such confusing instructions. I want to reassure you that you did everything right as per the instructions, and this could have happened to anyone.
    You're definitely not to blame here-anyone could have been tripped up by those instructions. Take care, and all the best.

  • @HolyFreakinDragonSlayer
    @HolyFreakinDragonSlayer Před 2 lety +2

    Hi Keith, the premise of the food guard is not for the food to stick stick but just for purchase. Personally never use tomato on a mandolin too as wet veg can ruin the intended usage. Mandolins are only really good for fancy presicision things for equal thickness for things like potatoes, aubergines, corgettes, potatoes etc and do require some skill and pressure on use. Only recomend buying if you make alot of julienne style veg or douphinoures. Ither than that its just as easy to use a knife. For pwople wanting to buy any sort of mandolin, some come with chainmale gloves, you can also buy chef gloves for their use too. Great review friends xxx

    Thanks for the video buddy - no offence to our American friends but it’s nice to see British reviews as there seem to be so few. Just to say, I’m sure you are not thick!. I’ve tried a few mandolins without success from the cheapest to the more expensive and none of them work but I know realise that perhaps I too was using it incorrectly and trying to attach the food to the hand protector rather than putting the food on the mandolin and just resting food guard on top so thank you to the other reviewers here and thank you to you Old Food Guy 😊

    These have been around for years I have seen them demonstrated at Blackpool market there is a knack to using them but most people will just end up slicing there fingers. My solution is just use a sharp knife you don't need one of these things and it will only end up in the cupboard for years and never used.

    Keith, the spike thing is just to add friction when using the mandoline, it’s not supposed to literally stick to it. I think there was a large element of user error here but at the same time these cheap things are usually crap so you’re probably still doing everyone a favour.
