A recurring theme throughout TNG is that Data does have emotions, or at least something like them, but his programming is too simple to understand them or express them outwardly (or maybe they were intentionally gimped after Lore). It goes back to at least season 2 with Pulaski commenting on his bruised ego.

  • @daviddiggens8841

Thinking back on this episode, I had the same basic questions you two had especially how she was never outed by the seemingly ubiquitous scans that happen on the show, but Data's reaction to her felt odd. It would be too emotionally out of character if he was overjoyed at the discovery she existed but I was never sure if he was behaving logically or reacting OTT emotional in trying to Corroborate her validity. It felt off to me somehow.
Also thanks for pointing out the utter irony of the " child Of parents with loving hearts" statement in the face of all she said about Lore. That bothered the hell out of me.
Anyhow I'm visiting my mother today so I will remember to check her blinking, viola skills and scalp flap just in case she's a romulan spy. Cheers

Answer me a question: Data says that if he tells Dr. Tainor that she is an android, then he will no longer be alone in the universe. This was after he killed off Lore, but as long as Data knows that Dr. Tainor is an android and doesn't tell her, does it matter if she knows it? As long as he knows that she is an android, then he knows he is not alone in the universe.

  • @DissociatedWomenIncorporated

I think the mention of a “Gexuality subroutine” more meant dating/relationships as a whole and how mothers can have embarrassing, sometimes weirdly prideful reactions to finding out their kids are seeing someone. Though your interpretation is funnier, Data just prowling the corridors for receptive shipmates every night 😂 leaning against doorways, doing sleazy leers, adding the trademark Brent Spiner eyebrow bounces… 🦎
Oh and centuries is, to be fair, at least sufficient time to both research longer term solutions (like filling the planet’s core with overly microwaved pizza pockets) and start planning an orderly, thorough evacuation in case that research doesn’t pan out.

This is one of those episodes that makes you wonder what the show would've been like if you could have continuity from one episode to the next, less beholden to the needs of syndication. But I guess you'd basically get DS9.

DS9-style TNG would have been amazing. We could actually follow up on assorted plot threads that get completely dropped -- Do Worf and that kid whose mother died hang out and drink prune juice on Thursday evenings? Is Guinan still traumatised from listening to fake-Mark Twain's screachy voice? Does Data have fond memories of getting jiggy with Tasha? TF even happened to Vash? Kyle Riker ...? Spock's work on Romulus? I literally don't care, but I bet somebody wants to know if Pulaski is still a grumpy, joyless PITA technophobe? Um, anyone remember Barclay? What about Red Shirt 465 who *didn't* die tragically / meaninglessly? How's Leah Brahms -- do she and Geordi send holographic postcards or whatever?

It would have been awesome if there could have been a fight between Riker and Data over their new "relationship". There could have been some kind of spat during Poker Night in which Data accidentally kills Riker. Then Picard in all of his wisdom makes Data promise that he'll never do it again, and Picard begins to fudge the records in order to maintain Data's supposed innocence. Since only Jordi, Whorf and Diana are present everyone would be sworn to secrecy and then they take the Enterprise to find "Thomas" in order to replace Riker. Then after a couple of seasons Thomas is so creeped out by the whole ordeal that he goes crazy. This would make DS9's season 3 episode 9 "Defiant" make even more sense.

I remember seeing this many years ago when it was first aired in the UK (mid-90s!) and I really liked it. Upon re-watches, it is rather sentimental and a bit lame, but still fun. But it is full of holes.
How on earth did Soong put the message- chip-thingummy in Julienna's brain? The message said, "She left me", which would suggest Soong planted the message chip in *after* she left him. So Soong tracked Juianna, KO'd her and added extras to the chip. Unless Julianna's message chip had wide-ranging Bluetooth, I guess.
What I also don't get is that Soong built an android that was so sophisticated, it fools the Enterprise's computer and scanners decades later!
    I'd give it a C.

@@jamesbizs He is neither a literal nor metaphorical god of any kind. He took the technology of his time and made something new. Impressive, to be sure, but hardly on the level of godhood.
Furthermore, arrogance does not spring from having great ability. It springs from never being humbled. There are people with next-to-no ability that can be very arrogant. There are people with vast and useful skills that can be oh so humble.
Humility is the product of those times when a person cannot fix their problems on their own.

  • @dycedargselderbrother5353

Thinking about it, Data X Troi does make some sense. I imagine it'd be a relief for Troi to be with an actual man of mystery. I think her other option is a Ferengi, which makes Data a lot more appealing. They already explored this concept somewhat in that "Data gets a girlfriend" episode. Data's mother was cloying, though it does make some sense given that Data's difficulties with integrating into society had already been established. I get the "Data is still a robot" argument, but an estranged mother who meets her child as an adult will act much like this, talking about diapers, first teeth, etc. because she missed the rest of the developmental milestones and has nothing else to connect with.

One of my least favorite science fiction tropes, our super duper sensitive senors that can detect cellular residue in the parts per quadrillion and sense things light years away, yet away somehow can't pick up this McGuffin because of..Plot.
I hated it on DS9 with the Changlings and BSG with the Cylons who had USB ports in their arms, but somehow they still alluded their sensors/metal detectors.

C- episode. Data backstories do indeed seem to leave you wanting for more, or more accurately, unsatisfied. I liked the interactive scene explaining things at the end, but as you said, they didn't really uncover anything new except that she was an android. Dr. Suhn (spelling?) episodes make him seem one-dimensional, but I get why he may have been written that way, as engineers/scientists can be pretty focused and straightforward thinkers.
Nice cut-back critique of the script and Juliana's double-back on only one appropriate site. I like the use of the Romulan spy phrase, but perhaps a new phrase can be easter-egged in.

The rat's nest on Dr Tainer's head had me distracted the entire episode.
Given that Data recognised Dr Tainer's viola playing as route and mechanical I would have liked to have seen him reflecting on his own imitations of artistic expression.
The idea that Data would consider her being under the misapprehension of being human a valid reason not to tell her the truth was ridiculous and didn't seem remotely in character, and Picard's "Yeah, whatever... you decide, Data." approach seems equally out of character and sloppy.

Data's mom is just a copy of Dr. Sung in an android body. It would have been far more interesting if she had been a cold, rational counterpart to Sung who viewed Data as her ex-husband's goofy science experiment and wanted nothing to do with him. Data would be confronted with parental rejection, and his mother might grapple with the absurdity of resenting an android for destroying her marriage. Then by observing Data's life among the Enterprise crew, she could slowly realize that he had become a real person and accept him as her son.
