This is great stuff. I love how unified their sound is; the chemistry... they're a real band. Not just a bunch of great musicians playing as much as they can. Brilliant compositions and playing!
This band rocks (all of them are great jazz musicians). The more I listen to matt's music the more I love it. His super fat kind-of-low-mid guitar tone is beautiful and his contemporary jazz style is outstanding and original ... and so his compositions
I'm with you geeza !!!
I think I've listened to this about 25 times in the last week....
i've watched it 3 times already having just discovered it today :D
This is a true experience, damn near brought me to tears. Gorgeous!
just found matthew in may 2017 guitar player magazine...new fan...these guy are good.
Such a crazy improviser. I found out about him through Christian Scott's Quintet. A cool network of musicians, on the rise in their exposure. Jazz, man. Fucking jazz.
Thank you for this beautiful music...
To all the critics in the comment section. What profound gift have you contributed to the music world? This guy is talented. End of story. Get over yourself.
+331paradiddle You don't need to be an artist to have an opinion about art. You most likely have an opinion about politics but aren't necessary a politician.
+bubsadoozy Yea but it helps if you know what you're listening to. To dismiss something as "terrible" that you have no understanding of is just close minded. I don't understand avante garde paintings but I don't call them shit either because I don't have the depth of understanding to make such an ignorant statement
+bubsadoozy Would you agree that to reach this level of competence takes years and years of hard work and practice. I have tons of respect for someone who dedicates their life to an art form. I have a problem with morons who just call something garbage that they have no clue what they are talking about. If you don't like it, fine but if you want it call it garbage then I feel obligated to put my 2 cents in as well to defend what I know is someones life passion.
I always come back here to listen to the first tune again, i really really enjoy it! I think i don't really like the others, but that's ok, they are not bad at all, even if i just like the first one.
They are very young musicians, no playing standards which is actually uncommon and if they have created already such a good tune as the first, then they're probably going to do a lot more of good music in the future. They are still in development.
Oh and i do complain about the thing with the volume hahahaha.
@@manualvarado2212 "Very young musicians"?? Matt Stevens is almost 40. Don't mistake them playing _AT_ a college for _ATTENDING_ a college. They've all(?) made a name for themselves in the Jazz world, touring with musicians such as John Scofield, Esperanza Spalding, and Nicholas Payton, (EDIT: and Roy Hargrove, God rest his soul. And I know at least one of them, Clayton, was nominated for a Grammy a few years ago for his own album..though, yes, Grammies mean nothing). These ain't children, in any sense...
Great to see Matt getting the exposure he deserves. Ever since hearing him play stablemates always thought he'd be one of the dewds.
I'd like to add that I enjoyed this performance very much indeed.
gerald clayton.. good lord
Wow the guitar has 4 knobs compared to the 40 in the comments section....
very nice music, clear sound, nice guitar player, not boring like many guitar virtuoso
gerald clayton is too fucking good
The keyboard player is incredible! All amazing musicians!!!
Wonderful band. Excellent listening/interplay, great compositions. Great soloists too.
Just fantastic!!! A different "sound"... I I do like the humbleness; thanks Matt!! :)
phenomenal
Beautiful!
new young jazz musicians on the rise, hope they all do well
53-odd minutes goes by very quickly listening to this super tasty group. Matt's tone is amazing!
"My ... my, does it not do you well to listen so very carefully while feeling so very deeply the sounds of Mr. Metheny?
This group is great each member shines =Really great rhythm section. I like the melodic way Stevens uses arpeggio's then gives you a quick shot of the fast flurys, and clayton blows my mind with that Fender Rhodes . I am really excited about this next wave of jazz that is hitting the scene and thanks to you tube for helping bring awareness to it ..
I realize it is kind of off topic but do anybody know a good place to watch newly released tv shows online?
@Khalil Layton Flixportal xD
@Erik Blaine Thanks, signed up and it seems like a nice service =) Appreciate it !
@Khalil Layton Glad I could help :)
Awesome performance! That first song was likened to a "praise song" or something that evoked longing or melancholy...very nice.
AWESOME!!!!
Merci pour ta musicalité , un régal ( je ressent la même chose que chez Muthpiel et Mr Metheny. Bravo pour cette ouverture .......
I want to see this band in person sometime!
Outstanding!
Terrific.
Really enjoyed the tune.
Great compositions.
Exquisite.
Great playing. Also a sick tune
Great drummer along with everyone else
per fortuna non si vive solo di Pat??!!!...... grande Matthew Stevens, un fraseggio che ti trasporta nel cuore del jazz
❤ wow❤
I really enjoy the first tune!
Honestly, I find most modern jazz guitar players quite boring, but this guy I really dig. Another one I dig a lot is Wolfgang Muthspiel.
Check out Arthur Cadbury - his playing is from another planet -
Chief Hopper! Lovely playing, glad you made it out upside down in one piece x
Hollow body guitars sound really good!
Always a fan of Matthew....
bravo!!!
Billy James - good question. I play guitar, but I could only guess why he adjusts his tone and volume so often. With my cheap speakers, I can hear no change from his adjustments. Oh well. If it's find it distracting, close your eyes and listen - it's a great band. Gerald Clayton is fantastic and keeps getting better.
awesome dude ... 1st track sounds great
His finger picking technique remind me to Pat Metheny. Great performance!!
As a matter of fact, Matt have been a student of Pat Metheny at the Berklee College of Music... but, if its sound can recall the old master sometimes, I find more influences (Holdsworth, Stern, McLaughlin, Scofield...) and, first of all, his own music.
kill player ! love his tunes.
why do some knobs fiddle around with the comments section so much ?... insecure about their sound
?
Wow - great playing, tone, improvising - everything is amazing.
Incredible knobplaying !! Great performance.
🔥
I'm not sure what I enjoyed more....the band or the Steve Martin Wild and Crazy Guy impression at 26:45
Nice!
All you musically uneducated critics sounding off here would't know talent if it jumped up and bit you all in the ass . These are master musicians who indeed have worked their asses off to get to this standard .
Very nice
Nice playing. I got Metheny too but you're moving it on
Gosh ...a new concept of jazz without swing. Cool...
Hey Matt - totally inspired me. How do you even learn to play like that? Higher order of playing going on here... love the way you grow your tone with the range of your pitch. I don’t get how the trolls on the knob comment don’t seem to get it. Maybe they should just close their eyes and hear it.
cool man, love your full rounded tone with Rosenwinkel edge, but deeper - starry oceanic vibe...and sweet timing dude. I would like this recording man , any way ?
Ape Urson matthew Stevens- Woodwork
ES INCREIBLE, HAY SONIDISTAS QUE SE DECIDEN ESCUCHAR A QUIEN SE LE ANTOJE, MIREN EL PROBLEMA DEL GUITARRISTA, EL PIANO LLEGA EL SONIDO HASTA LA ESQUINA DEL BARRIO, QUE TREMENDO, QUE FALTA DE PROFESIONALISMO POR DIOSSSSSSSSSSSS! TITO
that was the greatest sound check ever !
wow
MATT STEVENS UM TOQUE NAS CORDAS MUITO SÚTIL! MÚSICOS CLASSE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i suppose the knob is an effect, something like reverb or echoes, and i think he modulates such signal, and every part of the first part he likes to do that, maybe the effect can not be appreciated in the recording. I think as a musician.
I can relate to this dude, getting your sound right is a bitch.
cory henry fucks with his organ switches constantly... who gives a shit if he's fiddling with the tone knob lol it's about the music
fantastisch
aaron spears on contra bass?
People are so full of shit. This was an amazing performance and I listen to it every 2 months or so. Looking forward to see them live someday
holy cow, the second tune is smoking.
i can see why esperanza chose him
His effects make it sound similar-ish to a nylon string no?
yep,in the records you can hear it with more clarity
@@sebastianbanguero6294 I wonder if he is doing something similar to Pat Metheny to get that sound. i like it.
Flatwound strings
Is the percussionist related to bassist Oscar Stagnaro (Berklee professor)?
You have some kind of power..
I feel like the guitar could have been put a little more in the forefront in the recording.
Great performance and interview nonetheless!
Noice! Very noice!
What brand of guitar is he playing??
If Matt Stevens used to play on Gibson ES 335 and Telecaster (and still is), he plays here a cute Harrison. And, even if it looks a bit like an archtop guitar, (to be more specific, a d'Aquisto New Yorker), it's more like a semi-hollow guitar. You can see those guitars here : harrisonguitars(dot)com ... beautiful
What make guitar is he playing? Sadowsky?
Hubert Van Calenbergh @harrisonguitars.com
quite true. once you get that short delay chorus things going, it is really hard to distinguish yourself from Pat, who pretty much single handedly established his tone as the default ,standard modern Jazz guitar sound. This player does have his own thing going, actually very prolific to my ears but does take some conscious effort to listen unbiased .
His left hand makes the same moves as Pat haha
+Mike Hawk His making this to take the breath just like brass instruments do!!
Let him be hehe
Forgive me, is this some unique guitar tuning?
no
where can I get his albums?
drops tomorrow on Itunes
Adebayo Fayemi I got it and it's awesome, there's one very jazz fusion song called Uptown Dance Party. It has a Allan Holdsworth feel in it.
Juan Pablo Martinez nice man! i'm waiting for the major drop on the 26th, since I don't use Itunes
Any idea what effects he uses??
For sure he uses zero tone on his guitar and very low mid's but his bass ad treble are pretty equalized. I think he has a small amount of chorus
Thanks a lot for the info!

WHY CAN l SPEAK SENTENCES WlTH0vT SAYlNG "Y'KN0W" EVEN 0NCE?
Metheny + Holdsworth + Knobs
all you knobs worried about the knobs.
You can hear the influence Metheny had on him, I think.
Its hard not sound like Pat Metheny sometimes.
You'd think he'd adjust his volume once or twice.
+lee95757 First time hearing this guy and, as many have noted, Metheny is obviously a huge influence. He's even emulating Pat's mannerisms. The whole "touch the volume and/or tone knob every once in a while" thing is certainly a Metheny staple. This guy's just making a caricature of it. (To be fair, I actually feel like in this instance he does it a lot as a nervous gesture, he seems pretty timid here.) His sound, the look of his guitar, his overall posture and mannerisms, all very reminiscent.
Cool music though, just bothers me a bit to feel like I am looking at an impression of someone. He's definitely got some ideas of his own though, it all just goes through that filter and I can't un-hear/un-see it.
+sssssssev you gotta be new to jazz guitar then
+Schnucki Platter I agree with you. I am a die hard Pat Meth fan and I see this guy as himself. Sssssssev, you should check Antonio Onorato. now that is what i regard as a clone.
gupta mahendra I wouldn't say I'm "new" to jazz guitar. I'm young (25), sure, but I've been listening long enough to tell that this guy is HEAVILY influenced by Metheny. I never said he's a clone.
Ok man, cool.
Matthew Stevens is the ONLY guitarist I know who is able not to butcher a piece of music. + with Gerald Clayton and Vincente Archer, it's pure joy.
Madinko12 Check out Lage Lund
You are just dumb man.
Sorry to say that a lot of jazz guitarist (the most part of them in fact) really don't know how to sound and gets it really wrong and flat. Even though I recognize they're great virtuoso sometimes.
This ain't a rock band and there's no" insecurity about his sound "?.The musicians want to hear each other and not just themselves he changes volume when playing single -note lines and chords also when the band starts playing with more gusto , also maybe he needs a change of tone so he makes small adjustments until it's right, pretty normal if you ask me .
nice playing but whats up with his right hand technique?
whats wrong with his technique
Just very..... Finger-y. Allot of movement but obviously the guys great
+Trango Fast It's called I'm Nervous technique! He's clearly unsettled, it happens. Guitars become like chocked Chickens at that point!
The sound of the guitar seems a little numb (lacking treble) for my test. I mean would sax player put a blanket over his sax bell?
Brian Cullen if the situation calls for it
Now I understand why my guitar instructor only allows students who bring guitar with volume knob only.
Sounds like an idiot.
Hey! It's Jesse Pinkman's long lost brother!
LOL!
just a thought but i feel like he's taken quite a bit off pat metheny in regards to both technique and lines. anyone else agree?
Nothing like Pat Metheny. Totally unique player.
Fair enough!
Never heard of this guy before, only just clicked the video and the first thing that came to my mind was that he probably transcribed the shit out of Pat ;)
What modern jazz guitarist hasn’t
Tobey Maguire on Drums! Playing so beautifully!
If he doesn't stop messing with that tone knob, I don't think I can keep watching...
why do some guitarists like him fiddle with their knobs so much ?...insecure about their sound ?
When you're in a quieter setting little changes in volume seem really drastic...
He's actually moving his tone nob not the volume nob. Like most players you turn the amp brighter then roll of the tone so you can achieve clarity.
Sounds like Pat Metheny to me.
+Ester Samuels reminds me, but def unique in his way
he should be fiddling with the tuning pegs not the tone controls
