    Roy Haynes is not dead! He’s 94 yrs old! Christian McBride, the youngest of the group with Roy Haynes the oldest, spans 46 years. CM (who really cooks on this recording, reminding me of Richard Davis) is now 48, Roy, 94, Kenny Garret is 60 and Chick is no longer with us except in recordings such as this one. And, thank you for reposting!

Their discourse on that subject I’d legendary.

      what are you talking about? Nonsense~!
      Plenty of people appreciate this. It also take no knowledge to do so. Can that extra knowledge give you another layer to dig in to? Yes, in any form of music. But Trained ears..? then why do my friends kids all love Jazz? They even know history of certain players.
      Your thinking keeps people away.. like it isn't meant for them, and perhaps you away from certain things.

      @@morbidmanmusic ok if you say so. In jazz history we learned that bebop actually was an elitist style of music for the blacks at that time (Black Pride so to say). And for me, Jazz has many many variations, but anything related to bebop is in my perception always like an inside joke amongst Jazzers.

    • @Yetipfote
      @Yetipfote Před 8 měsíci

      Also you may like jazz. Ok. But can you really appreciate the complexity of this? If you never played aka studied it for a longer time? I think no. It is very very complex music. It is like a boxing match. Sure you can appreciate Mayweather winning against Pacquiao. But can you appreciate the dance? Can you see all those tiny little details which happen in the flow? Not if your eyes aren't trained. And in Jazz not if your EARS aren't trained.

    • @paulferris662
      @paulferris662 Před 6 měsíci

      @@Yetipfote I think you have kind of a myopic view of jazz appreciation. I have a basic understanding of music yet I can enjoy this every bit as much as anyone else, even you. What would you say about people crowding into a club to see a live jazz performance? That they're only getting some of it if they don't have trained ears? That's preposterous. You would have fewer people listening to jazz your prescribed way than the relative sliver of jazz fans that exist today.

    The eye contact on display here by all (which the late Mr. Corea seemed to habitually engage in), demonstrates the esteem, respect and regard that he has for his peers-even as the leader-and that they all mutually have for each other. This a great example for us all in this hyper-individualistic period, even as the collective problems we face grow bigger and bigger every day: creating music is a team sport! They all just take turns speaking and listening, giving the best of themselves gracefully when speaking together and also while taking the spotlight all to themselves.

    Slightly pedantic note -- the 3rd tune is only "Steps", not "Steps-What Was". They are actually 2 different tunes and in Chick's "Now He Sings Now He Sobs" (w/Haynes as well), as Steps ends, they smoothly transition into "What Was". So this is why it was put down as a single tune on that album. I was a bit dissapointed because I have never heard Chick play "What Was" again since that album. It is a beautiful, dark, evocatvie tune and in some ways hints towards his later more well known "La Fiesta". I get the feeling "What Was" may have been a sketch that eventually becaome "La Fiesta" -- but only some of its melody hints at that. The rest is nothing like it and is much more dark and mysterious. Joanne Brackeen does a version of "What Was", in her trio album "New True Illusion".

What hits me first about the late great Chick is, his playful listening and responsiveness, and then his creative freedom in pushing the boundaries of improvisational ideas into areas of modernism right at the edge of the jazz tradition. An avant-garde musician at heart with an historical perspective of his instrument every time he approached an excursion. Miles and Tony forced him to seek new avenues of expression which elevated to levels seldom reached by other pianists.

    Pretty sure this is from 2010, making Roy Haynes 85 years young. 85 and playing like that...!!! When you get that kind of energy vibe from a built- in computer speaker- you know it IS SMOKIN'. Salute to Chick Corea, the most prolific and natural musician to date. This is an unbelievable group and performance!

    First saw Chick Corea with the original Return to Forever mid 70's and last saw him with the Five Peace Band in 2008. RIP to one of the greatest jazz or any genre pianists and band leaders ever.

    One of the most clearly played solos on the double bass ever.
    Difficult to compare with Pattitucci. Such different styles. Yet as pleasant and fulfilling on the function. Chris had Hubbard, JP had Chick on coaching. JP respectfully allowed Chick's interventions on the solo paths, but then giant McBride steps in and makes a statement of FREEDOM.
    Such a personality, bold and so accurate. McBride also dropped out of Juliard for the stages like Chick. We are so lucky with this encounter.
    We will never know what would have been having Brian Bromberg with Chick on the piano lead. Perhaps two long-beak birds never kiss? Sparks never let it happen?
    Legendary show!

    Chick did a brunch run at the blue note, Shortly before he died, and unfortunately I did not go to see him then.
    I will however never forget the 3 times I saw RTF, Especially the time at Carnegie hall
