Plenty of new graffiti artists want to know if their tag name is bad, in today's video I'm going to share a little secret with you about graffiti and tag names! The secret is........ yes, your tag name is bad but not because of the letters that make the name, rather instead its because you're bad! Dont freak out, this is ok and expected so let me explain. Since you're still new to graffiti, any and all names are going to be bad in your hands because you don't know how to use them just yet. luckily for you, with a little practice that name of yours could be amazing!
Graffiti is one of those artforms shrouded in mystery. people simply don't know when it is they stop being toy. so when are you no longer a toy in graffiti? well put simply, you're no longer toy when you learn the basics. with that said, there is a few more that goes into being a toy, stuff like, how much do you know the history, how much do you follow the ethics as well as your over all skill. all of this factors into if you're a toy or not in graffiti.

I always cringe a bit when people say like "I've been doing this for 6 months and I'm not improving, what gives?"
It'd be like picking up an instrument and teaching yourself off youtube for the same amount of time, then wondering why you're not getting accepted into a world class orchestra.
Graff/letters isn't something you just "get" or learn within a year or two. It's a lifelong challenge to keep improving your skills. But that's OK because for creative pursuits, you shouldnt do it because you want to be cool or more popular or whatever, you do it because you want to and you enjoy it.

I started tagging the moment after watching Wild Style in 6th grade. After I met my first fellow tagger/writer in my high school art class. I tagged whenever I could. Fast forward to my first year of college, I was getting comfortable enough to do throwies day or night. I just started doing pieces seven years ago.
I am 40 and a professional artist with an obsession for lettering and anything that is art. I love five letter names, because anyone can do four letter names. Being from a mountain town I was never taught the ins and outs of the culture, I went by what I saw and heard in Wild Style after I bought it. The biggest influences are the writers I have met and now call friends. This is a fun and trying scene. Stay fresh and watch your six.

I always love the question of "When am I not a toy or noob any more?" I always say "That's the wrong question. The right one is when can you finish a work and be happy with it? If you step back and get that feeling of 'Oh this it dope.' What does it matter if you've been doing it for 10months or 10years?" I personally think it's better to try and keep that attitude you had when you were new. That way you don't get stuck into one style. You can always have "your style", but it's super fun seeing something on a train or back alley, and going "That looks cool AF. Gonna go home and come up with something in that style for my next piece."

I chose TIKC as it was bestowed upon me by another writer honestly at just the right time. It's fitting as well as I have Tourettes syndrome which I hadn't fully accepted and tried to hide. Which also highlighted why illegal graffiti wasn't right for me. I initially started trying to piece from the get go. Which was insane! As It was trying to run before I could even sit up as my basic print font handwriting was chicken scratch or looked as if a spider had jumped in a pot of ink and ran across the page somehow forming something that resembled letters. I used to put it down to dyslexia which was just an excuse. I've spent the last month or so learning how to control lines and practicing basic print font. If I was to show you a comparison it would be night and day yet its still sloppy and inconsistent and that's okay Improvement takes time and dedication. I've always said make mistakes and learn from them and that's what I did. Recently purchased your beginner bundle. To get a better grasp of the graffiti specific fundamentals. Progress takes time and patience thats just the way it is. Thanks man!
Don't let inability or difficulty stop you from doing the things you want to do as that time you spend putting it off is going to pass regardless so if it's something you want to do and you know your doing it for the right reasons just do it "Time spent wishing is time spent wasted"

I DID scribble "Toy", over somebody else's piece, and immediately felt like a dickhead, I didn't take ANYTHING into consideration, not age, how long they'd been painting, and the fact that they may not have had an experienced writer in their corner, I'd forgotten how toy I was in the early 90's (silver letters, luminous orange outline 😳😳), encouragement can make a Toy great, insults can make a possible great quit....I prefer the encouragement!!!!

I had a very difficult time trying to choose a name when I first started graffiti. Even though simple, "TINY26" has a lot of meaning to me. My biggest motivations in life are my wife and my son. My wife is pretty small at 5'4 and 100 pounds (hence the tiny) and my son was born on the 26th day of the month (hence the 26). My biggest piece of advice for picking a name isn't to try and find the coolest one you can, it's looking at the things that inspire you so as you're creating your sketch/piece or whatever it may be, you have that inspiration in your mind the entire time

Give or take I have about 3-4 years of experience, so my word doesn't really weigh as much as Grimms.
But to every beginner out there I recommend that you take every word in this video as genuine advice, and that you follow these words as a religious person follows their faith. Don't be afraid to start at the beginning with the basics, the knowledge of straight letters are absolute crucial to ever get better. When I started, I went to the hardware store every damn friday to buy a few stacks of normal white A4 printing papers, 500 in each. Goal was to cover every paper in alphabets, A-Z until next friday arrives, then repeat the procedure. If I were to save every paper I ever covered in just alphabets my apartment would be stacked to the damn ceiling. It might suck at first, but it helps and it makes you better. Just repeating the progress over and over your brain will start to register the mistakes you make and over time you will notice HUGE difference.

But I ran with a couple of names , with different styles, handies included, like I was different people, but the same person. So I wouldn't get laced up, on the same name, if I was caught.

That bit of advice is great for any art form. For example, I’m a music producer. A couple years ago, I thought I was the absolute best of my skill and then two years of practice have past. I am better than I was those two years ago. If someone is legitimately interested and invested in their art, no matter the form, they will get better. They will improve with time and understanding that at an early stage is important for building artistic confidence. Another thing to understand is that your style or whatever you end up making isn’t for everyone. I understand that wild shit I end up doing in my music isn’t for everyone. That’s just how it is.

I had always been into art but out here we have the international car Forrest plus my lot where I'm staying is filled with decayed run down vehicles right behind it. Essentially this place is a graffiti artist paradise so I decided to pick up the medium and I've been putting some hours into trying it out. I just went down to vegas and got some actual artist sprays (I had been using rustoleum and krylon since that's all that's available up here and doing mostly stencil work)

I found myself agreeing with the sentiment that if it's an ugly, gray, rundown wall, why not paint over it, give some color to an otherwise depressing looking spot. I tag in my sketchbook, try some designs that will never see the light of day and sometimes slap some stickers on the back of road signs. I don't consider myself "the real deal" since i can't write for crap, but i try to make the world we live in a bit more than a combination of concrete, steel and glass

VENDETTA came from the name of my punk zine where i do a lot of the same art style as my graffiti but i shorten it to "VTTA" for my tag and then do the full word for more time consuming throwups and hopefully pieces soon

    Legit JUST started today.
decided to give it a shot, because i have been facinated by gravity/tags since i was a child.
So as a 16 year old i decided to try it.
I am pretty happy with the way my tag is coming along for my first day :) really really simple letering. Tried some stuff out. Simple to crazy and figured that simple just works best. I am a beginner afterall, but i realized that my drawing experience (about 7/8 years) have helped me a lot already lol
I, for now, decided to go for the name "PÜNKT" from the german word Punkt (--> Point) because it holds a big meaning to me in multiple ways. It reminds me of myself because of my birthmarks, a friend of mine always called them "Punkte" (points) and it reminds me of my dog becuase she also has "points"/dots on her skin :) and some other stuff i wont discuss here lol
I have a lot to learn and i am ready for the journey that is in my fututre.

I only thought about changing it once.. and that was to ZEXES, cause a lot of times i angle my V's to mirror the S and they end up looking like Z's anyway.

SFG is fast and easy but I still can't get the size or shape of the F connecting to the S. I actually got MV down packed though. I know MV is way too small for a tag name. FOOTS is hard because of the 2 O's connected. I tried something cool like feet to represent the O's but it looked crazy and ugly. like you said I wasn't even comfortable with writing FOOTS so how could I even try a character or design. I'm just gonna keep doing SFG/FOOTS because it was given to me. I could use a lil advice with connecting the S&F together and the O's together. Thanks👍💯
